When the prolific Tom Wilson (Junkhouse, Blackie and the Rodeo Kings) launched Lee Harvey Osmond as a solo project with A Quiet Evil in 2008, few could have predicted LHO would still be going strong a decade later.

They have yet to achieve the wider profile of those other outfits, but Mohawk, the fourth Lee Harvey Osmond record, confirms there's still plenty of pleasure to be gained from Wilson's bluesy and psychedelic takes on roots music. It is rather a misnomer to call LHO a solo venture, as Wilson has again surrounded himself with an A-list cast of Canadian peers, including his BARK rhythm section of Gary Craig and John Dymond, bassist Anna Ruddick, guitarists Bill Dillon and Aaron Goldstein, horn player Darcy Hepner, keyboardist Jesse O'Brien harmonica player Paul Reddick, and son Thompson Wilson, who co-wrote two songs here. The harmony vocals of Oh Susanna add texture and light to such tunes as "Whole Damn World" and "What I Loved About You."

Lee Harvey Osmond, stylized as LeE HARVeY OsMOND, is a Canadian psychedelic folk project fronted by musician Tom Wilson.

The act first took shape with Wilson in his LeE HARVeY OsMOND persona, backed by Michael Timmins of Cowboy Junkies and Josh Finlayson of Skydiggers. They wrote, recorded and released the debut album, A Quiet Evil, in 2009 on Latent Recordings. Margo Timmins, Andy Maize and Suzie Vinnick also contributed to the album. The band's current touring configuration consists of Wilson on lead vocals and guitar, Aaron Goldstein on guitar and pedal steel (who also contributed to A Quiet Evil), Cam Malcolm on bass guitar, Brent Titcomb on percussion and vocals and Ray Farrugia on drums.

Redolent with swooning horns and guitars that bob and weave, Lee Harvey Osmond’s voice – forever the hallmark of his sound which spans over three decades of work – sounds, here, like a warm hand to the forehead, an arm on the arm of the stricken, a comforting growl at the heart of a screaming world.

At once evoking Howlin’ Wolf, Mike Scott and Roy Loney, Beautiful Scars bends and twists and stretches and squeezes Lee Harvey Osmond’s deep baritone – the producer treating it as if caged in a transistor radio, bathed in echo from above, or sunk in the muck of distortion. Ever wonder what a lone, bad ass cowboy riding across the plain during a down poor in the pitch black of night would have playing on his iPod? Wonder no longer, Lee Harvey Osmond is here with a rotating posse of 17 strong, which even includes a few Cowboy Junkies. Tom Wilson (from Blackie and the Rodeo Kings) heads up this rugged band of Acid Folk’ pioneers for the bands first release, A Quiet Evil.

The album’s title more than sets the mood for the entire album. Lee Harvey Osmond’s stew adds pleasant portions of Cowboy Junkies, Velvet Underground, Neil Young and Morphine in with their own unique blend of simmering delights. Hypnotic, melancholy rhythms are complimented by dusty horns, chiming steel guitars, haunting guitar riffs and mellow hand percussion. The smoky/soul piercing vocals of Tom Wilson follow the same cadence with beautiful surprises of accompaniment by Margo Timmons (Cowboy Junkies).

Dark subjects are rendered in most of the lyrics, yet they do not leave the listener depressed. The lyrics are more an offering of thought for one to make your own conclusions from. “Lucifer’s Blues” is a good old fashioned face off with the devil (reminiscent of Charlie Daniels Band, House of the Rising Sun) and “Parkland” speaks about the assignation of JFK…which may have inspired the band’s name or vice versa. “I’m Going to Stay That Way” tells the age old yarn of losing your mind over lost love and includes Margo Timmons, duet style. The stand out track, “Angels in the Wilderness” questions spirituality with its soulful saunter and sweet lingering strings.

So, if you are in need of a humble companion in your journey down any shadowy path, grab yourself Lee Harvey Osmond, partner, and ride on out into the stormy night.
