(2007) ou Solidaritine (2022) aconteceu, em simultâneo com a luta (que a selvática invasão russa acentuaria e multiplicaria) contra os anos de propaganda que conduziram muitos a crer que Nikolai Gogol era um escritor russo e não ucraniano. O que, do pós-punk primordial de Clash eslavos se poderá, entretanto, ter perdido, está de regresso: "Este álbum, We Mean It, Man! reúne todas as inspirações originais dos Gogol Bordello mais do que qualquer outro: punk, hardcore, synth punk, música cigana. Nunca as vi como coisas separadas — somos polinizadores cruzados. Acredito que o novo álbum é o melhor Frankenstein que criámos desde Gypsy Punks".

O MELHOR FRANKENSTEIN

Lower East Side Romani folk-punk-powerpack. Folk-punk rollercoaster. Ou, simplesmente, gypsy-punk. São as caracterizações mais frequentes para os Gogol Bordello, aquela banda multi-multi-multi-nacional (da origem, em 1999, até hoje: ucranianos, russos, israelitas, equatorianos, bielorussos, americanos, etíopes, romenos, sino-escoceses e tai-americanos) de que o ucraniano de raiz cigana, Eugene Hütz, foi montando as peças no Lower East Side de Nova Iorque. "Quando era miúdo, na Ucrânia, para ter acesso à música que procurava, tínha de apanhar o comboio para alguma floresta ou campo isolado, ou pelo menos para algum bairro suspeito onde todos os malucos se reuniam até que a polícia aparecesse", explicou Hutz ao "New Noise Magazine", sublinhando que "As três componentes essenciais – música cigana, punk e reggae – eram bastante evidentes e foram o que, na verdade, partilhámos". Desde a partida da Ucrânia para os EUA, em 1990, a ambição que, com os Gogol concretizaria, era "desafiar a noção pós-moderna de que tudo tinha já sido feito no que respeita à música. Queria trabalhar com os estilos mais modernos que tinha absorvido, juntamente com a música cigana da Ucrânia, Roménia, Hungria, Macedónia". (daqui; segue para aqui)

"The Romani have a powerful connection to the sky and the earth. Ever since they left Ancient India over a thousand years ago and entered West Asia and then Europe as nomads, they’ve been scapegoated and treated as inferior by the surrounding cultures who were obsessed with identity, superiority, and building glorious civilizations. They have witnessed the “civilized” world rise and then stumble in its overconsumption, pollution, greed for territory, and deep animosity. The Romani have never once tried to invade anyone, claim any land as “their own”, plant a flag anywhere, or force their culture and faith on anyone. Their culture and identity have remained intact for 10+ centuries, despite relentless persecution, genocide, attempts at assimilation, forced sterilizations, enslavement, and more - in fact, their sense of identity is so strong that they never had any need to force it onto anyone else.  Bob Dylan met Manitas de Plata in St.Maries de la Mer

"Legend tells of a boat that washed up on the shores of Saintes Maries de la Mer shortly after the crucifixion of Christ. The boat contained Mary Magdalen, Mary Jacobe and Mary Salome, the three Marys after whom the town is named, along with their Egyptian handmaiden, Sara. Close disciples of Christ, the boat’s occupants were hounded and arrested following his death, then placed in a small skiff without oars and set adrift on the Med. When the boat safely reached land, Lazarus, Martha and Mary Magdalen continued on their journeys to teach the scriptures; Martha to Tarascon, Mary Magdalen and Lazarus to Marseilles. The other two Marys and Sara remained in Saintes Maries.

Never recognised by the church, Sara is said to have dedicated her life to protecting the children of the French gypsies, or Gitans, from persecution as a result of which she was adopted by the Gitan as their Patron Saint. Since the 12th century, during the Gitan Pilgrimage in conjunction with the Patron Saints’ Day of the three Marys on 25th May, tens of thousands of Gitan, Romany, Manouche and Tzigane Gypsies descend upon the town to carry the statue of Sara down to the sea on their shoulders the day before the Saints arrived so that she can wait to welcome their arrival to the shores of Saintes Maries" (aqui + "Meet Sara-la-Kali, the patron saint of displaced people)

"We stood in the windy city, The gypsy boy and I, We slept on the breeze in the midnight, With the rain droppin' tears in our eyes" ("Gyp Mills, also known as Gypsy Dave, was a friend of Donovan, with whom he travelled a lot during 60s era. His was his tour manager and the right hand man, to whom Donovan dedicated the songs 'To Try for the Sun' and 'Hey Gyp (Dig the Slowness)”.
