En verano de 1966 Arthur Lee, vocalista de Love, recomendaba a Elektra Records, su compañía discográfica, una banda llamada The Doors que tocaba en el Whiskey a Go Go de Los Angeles. Jac Holzman, presidente de la compañía, y Paul A. Rothchild, productor, presenciaban dos actuaciones y decidían contratarlos.
