In New Swansea, a glittering city once inhabited by vampires, power rests not with the royal class but with the Bargainers—deities trapped in magic mirrors, who exchange power, wealth, and knowledge for a cost . . . often a wretched one.
Quinnevere Ashelle wants nothing to do with the Bargainers, but at twenty-three, she is getting too old to make it into the Royalle Ballet, and with only one shot left, she’ll do anything—including make a twisted deal with an evil god. The agreement is passionately kiss her archnemesis, Prince Emrys, and she will receive her dream spot in the Royalle Ballet.
Unfortunately, when Quinn’s deal with the Bargainer backfires, her beloved friend turns up dead, entirely drained of blood, and with puncture wounds matching the long-extinct vampires.
Feeling utterly responsible, Quinn vows to get vengeance and use her medical examiner skills to solve the murder, but she is far outmatched in this world of immortals—especially when she discovers she’s being hunted, as is the killer’s next target. If she wants to survive, she must team up with the devilishly attractive but wicked Prince Emrys to track down the murderer before she gets cornered herself.
***Author's note: Gilded Wicked Mirrors is a New Adult Romantasy featuring enemies to lovers, knife to throat, and deadly bargains. The steam level is mild, but the sequels will be much spicier. This single-POV fantasy romance is perfect for fans of Crescent City’s gritty investigations and Caraval’s lush world.
Hazel St. Lewis is a Northern California-based Romantasy author. Diagnosed with dyslexia at a young age, she struggled to read and write, but fantasy stories inspired her to start storytelling. Unfortunately, now, she is a little too obsessed with morally grey characters. When she isn’t writing, she can be found playing with her hoard of cats (too many to count…it’s a problem), singing songs to said cats—like Cinderella—or painting.
This book is filled with Magic Mirrors (like Snow White) and Vampires. I love this combo! I really loved this turn of the century murder mystery. Quinn is just turning 23 and lives in a town that resembles New York City in the early 1900s. She watched her parents die due to a bad deal with one of the magical Mirrors that plagues her city. She grows up with her Uncle, who taught her how to perform autopsies and how to be a medical examiner. However, all she's ever wanted to be was a ballerina.
The night of her 23rd birthday, she is taken to the Mirrors by her friends, who want her to make a deal with one of the Mirrors as a coming of age rite of passage. Not long after, one of her friends meets a terrible end. She vows to find the killer of her friend.

DNF for me at 10%. Normally, I try to get farther in, so I might give it another go, but around the 50-page mark, I still wasn't super interested, so I'm putting it down for now. 😭
I can't quite tell if I had a good time or not... honestly there was a lot I was curious about but it also felt like an info dump after info dump. I've tried to review this book to friends so far and it's very hard to get a handle on it to break it down.
There are mirrors and vampires, secrets and bargains, murders and investigations. There's a Prince and a ballerina, there's friendship and found family. So there are many great elements to this world. It was just hard to keep it all straight. So much so, I'm not even going to try to write a summary, I leave it up to other reviewers.
It had a decent slow burn tension building and I definitely wanted some more kisses from Prince Emrys. I look forward to learning more about him and seeing how Quinn gets out of the situation we were left in.
I admire the author for taking on a story as complex as this. I only hope that the next entry can pull it more into focus. There was just SO much going on. I got a little too lost.
P.S. There was great rep (for what I could tell) for Dyslexia and this is owned voices based on the authors note. I also highly recommend the physical copy of this book because WOW, it is well detailed and GORGEOUS.
3.5 stars 1.5 on the spice scale
CW: murder, gore, assault
*Thank you to The Nerd Fam and the author for a free copy of this title.*
I'm feeling confused and underwhelmed by this story.
The writing is choppy. The dialogue is immature. The actual story progression relies completely on "Oh now this can happen because this world is magical!". I almost DNF'd several times but wanted to stick it out to see how it ends.... of course, it ends on a massive cliffhanger, and there is no resolution (it just ends right in the middle of the action). This story also reads like YA, but it's marketed as NA (outside of the few spicy scenes).
Almost every chapter had a massive info dump. The dialogue is stretched out and needs editing (the characters' speech feels off and repetitive). The plot development and twists are unbelievable. It's like the author just pulled plot devices and explanations out of a popular-fantasy-plot-devices jar.
It's unfortunate because I loved the concept at first. The mirror magic is interesting but just gets more and more muddled. The ballet aspect? Loved it, I love our FMC's passion for dance and also the fact that she can perform autopsies and has medical knowledge.
I think there was a really good idea here, but the execution is lacking.
Thank you to Victory Editing Co-Op and Netgalley for an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review.
’By my side, little ballerina. Let’s give them something to talk about.’
Thank you to the Nerd Fam for this advanced reader copy in exchange for an honest review, so here it is!
I have been bamboozled. That ending has my mind REELING. Now I must wait for the next book…what am I supposed to do.
This book was so interesting. I must admit the start was a bit iffy for me but this magic system was so fun and unique. It definitely is a book to read if you loved Caraval and Once Upon a Broken Heart by Stephanie Garber.
One thing that really had me obsessed with this book was the tension and banter between Emrys and Quinn. I ate that shit up. Emrys was so addictive. I am a simp.
There’s lots of mystery, betrayals, and tension that made me eat this book up. Like come on, there is also vampires and who doesn’t love vampires?
This book was amazing! It was filled with vampires, magical mirrors, betrayals, and even a slow burn romance. My favorite part had to do with the magical mirrors. I loved how the characters could make bargains with Mirror Gods in order to gain magic, information, beauty, etc. It’s a concept that I truly felt made the book stand out.
I also loved the murder mystery! I swear the author made me doubt every single character. I honestly couldn’t figure out who was truly the person behind the murders. This led to some insane plot twists and betrayals. My jaw literally dropped every time something unexpected happened because just when you thought a character was good, they go and end up showing their true colors.
This book even had some romance. It’s a slow burn romance with very minimal spice. The book was filled with tension and a few stolen kisses, which I absolutely loved. I can’t wait to see more of the main couple’s relationship in book 2.
One last thing has to be mentioned…the book ends on a cliffhanger 😭 Literally tore my heart in two! Just prepare yourself because it was brutal. It’s gonna leave you aching for book 2!
Thank you so much Hazel St. Lewis and Book of Matches Media for the ARC 🫶
Do you love books with a steampunk atmosphere? Unique magic system? Vampires? Shadow daddies? A slow burn romance that is still slow burning?
Then read this book. This was such a fun read. The world was intriguing. The magic system was super unique, it is based on mirrors and I am obsessed. The main characters were well developed. My favorite character actually ended up being the side character Giselle, I love her so much. And the villain gave major Dr Jekyll and Mr. Hyde vibes which hooked me even more while also making me want to throw my kindle through a wall. 😅
The only reason this book is not 5 stars for me is because some of the writing came off as juvenile, and the spice scenes were extremely cringe. But this is only book 1 so I have hopes that the next book will be even better.
So yeah, if this all sounds interesting to you, make sure to pick up this book and get ready for book 2 coming in 2025.
Thank you so much to the NerdFam for the e-arc of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
ARC review — I LOVED this book & read it in a day. The surprises, betrayals, twists & turns had me on the edge of my seat. The story is truly like playing a murder mystery game — following clues, making your own predictions and trying to guess who was behind the chaos.
What drew me in originally was the blurb about it being familiar to Caraval and Crescent City which are two of my all time favorite series. I can confirm there are hints of both aesthetics in Gilded Wicked Mirrors!
Hazel’s words ebbed and flowed so beautifully. The story is clever & twisted in the best way. The immense details of the characters, gadgets, places and scenes are perfection and felt like I was transported as a bystander into this world.
I always enjoy a good shadow daddy and Emyrs (MMC) puts off Damon Salvatore vibes.
Quinn’s (FMC) mind is brilliant. One of my favorite story lines is a brave, intelligent female character when the odds are stacked against her. The ballerina x medical examiner cross is refreshing & quite the handy combo!
Oh, and the ending had my jaw on the floor & I cannot wait for book 2!!
Gilded Wicked Mirrors releases August 6, 2024 & will be on Kindle Unlimited!
Thank you to The Nerd Fam for the gifted copy of Gilded Wicked Mirrors by Hazel St. Lewis!
This book really had my attention. While you can definitely draw some similarities to other fantasies I’ve read, I did feel like much of this was unique and had a different vampire twist that has me wanting book two ASAP.
I loved that Quinn was a dancer and part-time mortician. The combination of athleticism and science are things I personally enjoy and those character dynamics were a cool part of this plot. Found family is a big aspect of the book too and I loved all of these side characters.
The romance was a bit lusty for me in the beginning, but luckily grew on me. When that backed off and I got to see the banter between Quinn and Emrys I was much more interested in watching their connection grow. I think the slow burn settled in well and I can’t wait to see how the relationship continues in book two.
All of the mirrors, and vampires and other world building aspects created a complex city full of mystery. I liked that it had plenty of action balanced with soft moments that made it easy to turn the pages.
Overall audience notes: - Fantasy Romance - Language: high - Romance: 2ish brief open door - Violence: high - Content Warnings: blood/gore depiction, murder, loss of loved ones
I’m still confused on how to rate this book… I LOVED the vibes and the mirrors were a unique magic system I enjoyed but everything in this book was so obvious. I guessed every betrayal, every twist. Everything. And there were some beautiful lines in this book, the writing is not bad but the execution for reveals was really not it
What a fantastic book!! I was honestly sucked in first by the beautiful cover, and then fully sold once I found out it was a mystery set in a fantasy realm.
This book combined fantasy, mystery, and dance - all while set in a time that is similar to the 1920's but with magic, mirrors, and vampires. The mirrors are magic, and people can go into them and make deals with them. But the deals aren't just simple, there are always consciences - both good and bad - to making a deal with a mirror. All the mirrors have different names and personalities. Some are easier to deal with than others, and Quinn has always avoided them as best as she could. After all, her parents had been murdered and found near a broken Blood Mirror. But as fate would have it, people start dying, and since she works with her uncle - who is the medical examiner - she wants to find out what happened. Especially since one of her friends had died. But looking into the murders aren't easy and straightforward as everyone has secrets, and some are compelled so they can't speak about them even if they tried.
This book was a whirlwind of emotions. We get love, angst, hate, jealousy, and so much out of this. I truly fell in love with Quinn's character, and felt that I could connect with her on so many levels, but especially on the ADHD and dyslexia aspects.
The cliffhanger hit HARD, and I absolutely need to know what happens next, I can't wait for book 2 and I have to hold out hope that it will all work out, and Quinn has a plan up her sleeve.
Thank you so much to the author and The Nerd Fam for an early copy of this book. I had so much fun reading it and my mind is spiraling after that ending!
A few things you can find in this book:
🪞Caraval style whimsical world 🪞Morally grey shadow daddy MMC 🪞Murder Mystery 🪞Enemies to Lovers 🪞Slow Burn 🪞Reluctant allies 🪞Vampires 🪞Godlike beings 🪞Magic with consequences
Where do I even begin?! This book sucked me in from page one. The world was so addictive and unique. It felt very similar to aspects of Caraval and rather than the deities we see in that series being contained to a deck of cards, there are godlike beings who are held within magical mirrors around the city. I love that the magic in this world comes with unintentional consequences and the bigger the wish the bigger the cost.
Quinn was such a fun FMC. She is so resourceful, resilient, intelligent and dedicated. She is also fiercely loyal to the people she holds dearest to her. Emrys, our hot and mysterious MMC, stole my heart IMMEDIATELY! He was witty, morally grey, and a complete puzzle to figure out.
The murder mystery aspects of this book has my brain spinning! I could not guess which was it was going to go which made the journey all the better. And even when I finally thought I’d figured it out…. I was wrong! Talk about a plot twist! The ending of this book left me with so many questions and aching for book two immediately!
thank you so much to the author and book of matches media for the early copy!! all my opinions are my own!
if it hadn't been for that ending, this books would've had 4 stars... i think that says a lot 😱😱 i don't know why i was so hesitant to pick it back up when i first started it but, once i did, the only thing i wanted to do was keep reading. it's so well written and the mystery just sucks you in like the mirrors in the story 😂 Giselle was one of the best side characters i've ever read, she always brought the laughs with her and i adored to know she was plus sized and almost nothing scared her. and then there was Emrys. i'm so sorry but i couldn't help picturing him as Tom Ellis all the time, so of course i was swooning of love every single time he showed up and irritated Quinn or made her laugh or even showed that he cared. he truly is amazing AND I'M SO CONVINCED THAT ENDING IS JUST A RUSE OR AN ILLUSION BECAUSE I REFUSE TO BELIEVE IT REALLY HAPPENED LIKE HAZEL WHERE IS MY SECOND BOOK WHEEEEREEEE 😭😭😭😭 also, THE BALLEt??? FINALLY A BOOK THAT WRITES ABOUT A BALLERINA AS IT SHOULD. i loved the descriptions and how Quinn felt when dancing and how important it is for her. the character development was also amazing, i was really growing alongside Quinn, which is something that made me appreciate her even more. so yeah, go read this book if you haven't, i swear it's so good 😍😍😍
Thank you @thenerdfam and for the gifted copy of Gilded Wicked Mirrors by Hazel St. Lewis
Wow. Wow. Wow. I don’t think I’ve read a book like this. The magic system was so unique with the use of mirrors. Our fmc Quinn dreams of being a ballerina while she’s stuck in the morgue with her uncle. As she’s met with the death of her best friend, she has to team up with the man she can’t stand, Prince Emrys to solve the murder. She’s met with deals gone wrong, betrayal, and secrets and riddles at every step. This book had me hooked from the description of Caraval meets Crescent City and I was not disappointed! The banter and tension between the leads was great. I found myself trying to look for clues to solve the mystery myself (but I did not). Great twists in the end I didn’t quite expect! Definitely recommend!
to say i liked this book is an understatement. i loved it. I'm obsessed with it. it's overtaken my thoughts and buried itself deep into my soul.
the characters were loveable. quinn owns my heart. her group of friends gives major found family vibes. i really liked how supportive everyone was and how they all had an important role to play within the story. (and emrys 😍😍💖)
the magic and world building was really unique and cool. god like beings trapped inside mirrors, forced to do bargains with people. their deceit and trickery know no bounds.
gilded wicked mirrors is filled with tension, high stakes, action and betrayal. i couldn't put this book down, it was just too good!!
I adored this book and really can’t wait for the sequel.
DNF at 75%— I was so intrigued by the concept of Gilded Wicked Mirrors. It felt like nothing else I had ever read before, and I was really disappointed to dnf.
Vampires, magic mirrors, deadly bargains, 7 years bad luck... sign me up! The magic system felt so unique and I was drawn in from the beginning to learn more. The mystery aspect also had me incredibly interested because I love secrets and it definitely had the same vibe as Crescent City! The story takes place in a second world fantasy that very much resembles a 1890 - 1910 time period as far as dress and technology, but some of the dialogue kept pulling me out of that time period, and it felt off to me. I loved that out FMC Quinn was a ballet dancer, and the dancer in me ate up the ballet terminology, but sometimes it felt out of place and unnecessary. I think in general a lot of the writing felt a little more fluffy to me, and I continued to find myself skimming for dialogue.
I enjoyed reading about Quinn's friendships. She has a strong group who seem to have their own dark secrets but ultimately will do anything to protect each other. The enemies to lovers plot line between Quinn & Emrys was very interesting at first, but for some reason I struggled to connect with them like I wanted.
There were lots of little exciting plot twists along the way that would start draw me back into the story, but then nothing would really happen and I'd start skimming again. Just because this book was not for me, does not mean its not for you.

A big shout out and thank you to The Nerd Fam and the author Hazel St. Lewis for providing me with a gifted copy of Gilded Wicked Mirrors in exchange for an honest review!
One thing that immediately captures your attention when you start Gilded Wicked Mirrors is the tone of the story. From page one, you know exactly the kind of read you’re walking into. Gritty, heartfelt, painful and chaotic. Those are the four words I would use to describe my journey reading GWM. I’m going to expand on them through the course of the review. Stay tuned, folks!
The author has chosen an extremely interesting way to keep her readers abreast about the world and the way the people of her world work and perceive their realities. With beautiful art paired with newspaper articles, the author reels you into the world of GWM that begins promptly from page one, with not a moment to tarry. I will admit that a world of mirrors, a ballerina FMC, mirror-bargains and mysterious MMCs with shadow-wielding abilities have been seen before; BUT, I don’t think we’ve ever seen them all together in a world like the one created by Hazel St. Lewis. I think the author has done a good job with the world-building in this book; creating the tapestry for her book with rich details that paint the gritty backdrop that GWM is based in. (Special mention to all the art in this book and on the author’s Instagram page; they’re so beautiful. Kudos to the artist!)
The writing in GWM is well suited to the voice of the primary narrator in this story (the FMC, Quinn). With a heartbreaking mix of emotional and practical, Hazel St. Lewis’ writing takes you for a ride of mystery, plot twists and romance. A very interesting technique the author uses that I don’t think I’ve seen before is incorporating a rather detailed foreshadowing scene and then tossing it into a box and shaking it up, so you won’t know which one will come out, or if it will at all. The only time I ever struggled with the book was when multiple things were happening with a great deal of characters in the scene, where I’d feel momentary lapses in understanding. I’d have to re-read and reposition people in my mind. With the kind of speed reading I did because of the way the last 20% sprints, it could’ve just been me, so who knows?
The plot in this book really takes you on a ride. Scene after scene of intrigue, that just builds and builds until it meets with a dynamite of an end that shatters the threads of everything you know. A small part of this book, especially the murder investigation did remind me little of the first book in the Crescent City series (which I just noticed is mentioned in the blurb as an author’s note), with the way it unravels and spirals out of control. But given how different the directions of the revelations are, you won’t be caught up in said similarity anymore than thinking “Oh!”. I do think the author has incorporated some really interesting ideas and concepts into her world. I will say that the plot twists will both surprise you and at the same time you’ll expect some of them. It’s a good enough balance that you’re anticipating what’s next the whole time.
There are many aspects of this book when it started, that I loved, and I think the author wants you to. Because be prepared to see everything crash and burn in a tornado of chaos and pain. Every page is an escalation and every character is the lever used to toss you onto the next page. (Did I already mention the amazing art? Because it is. Amazing, I mean.)
The characters in this book are truly aplenty and I’m not going to lie, for a minute there I doubted everyone before settling on my primary suspect. (I was right and wrong, fyi.) I expected to be right and I was but I hadn’t expected to be wrong and I was that too! Anyway, while the book doesn’t have an ensemble cast trope, it tiptoes the line very much. I will admit that sometimes all the characters—perhaps because they’re introduced altogether—can crossover in your mind for a bit but by the end you’ve got them all sorted. There will be more characters introduced over the course of the story though, so be prepared for that! There are lot of complex elements, including representation, that make up this book.
As mentioned earlier, the pace in the last twenty odd percent of the book is definitely much faster. BUT, the whole book in general has a rather swift pace and you won’t feel the weight of the length. Additionally, I wouldn’t personally classify this book as a romantasy. I would say this book is a high fantasy read with romance in it, but the plot has a greater emphasis and space in this book than the romance in my opinion. However, I do feel there’s an interesting foundation that’s been established to build a romance on; but based on the author’s note, perhaps the rest of the series will feature more romance in it?
I’m rounding up to four stars! Happy reading! Gilded Wicked Mirrors releases on the 6th of August and will be absolutely free for all KU subscribers. Check trigger warnings as always! There are many dark and graphic elements in this book that should be considered before beginning.
Quinnevere Ashelle wants nothing more than to join the Royal Ballet. But on the night of her 23rd birthday, when she strikes a deal with a wicked god stuck in a gilded mirror, her whole world is turned upside down in betrayals, lies, and secrets. When she finds her beloved friend dead the following morning, with punctured wounds, Quinn begins to think the long-extinct vampires may not actually be gone, and are beginning their revenge.
I truly enjoyed this story and the uniqueness of it ♥️🪞 I loved the idea of gods being trapped in mirrors and striking deals with mortals for exchanges, and the world-building felt like a whimsical 1920’s New Orleans to me with the cable cars, steamboats, clothing, etc.
The murder mystery plot was enthralling, from all the twists and turns, the mistrust amongst the characters about who could possibly be the murderer, and the secrets spilled throughout — it was all exciting! I loved Quinnevere’s character development and seeing her grow into this strong, curious and loyal woman. I also loved the mysterious Emrys and his charming, sarcastic yet sometimes broody personality. I felt like his and Quinn’s relationship going from enemies to allies (and more) was built so steadily and their banter was everything.
I seriously can’t wait for book 2, especially after that ending!
This is perfect for any reader who likes: - Fantasy - Evil bargains - Vampires - Immortal Gods - Enemies to lovers - 1920’s World-Building
Gilded Wicked Mirrors ticked all the boxes for me. I love fantasy, and I do so love a good mystery. So naturally, any book that combines the two immediately piques my attention. GWM has such a cozy mystery fantasy feel to it, and yet the stakes are much too high for it to ever fall into that category. It was easy to read but still has interesting and intricate worldbuilding with a standout magic system.
Quinn, our fmc, brings two extremes to the table. In her heart she longs to be a ballerina, but for now, she has to settle for being an extremely gifted medical examiner. I loved that Lewis gave us a female character who shows that we as women can be feminine and still handle the gruesome without blinking an eye. I mean, what beats a frilly tutu with blood splatter on it. Courageous, intelligent females in books have my whole heart.
Emrys is our newest shadow daddy. He is a total heartthrob and yet so so much more. I can't say more about him, apart from after finishing this I am completely heartbroken.
This book was cleverly written. Lewis doesn't miss a beat when it comes to terminology in the medical field. The dystexia rep is handled with exteme care and the mystery surrounding the mirrors was beautifully revealed, all while the villain hides in plain sight.
The ending of this book broke me. My heart is not okay, and I hope that Lewis gives us some type of miracle to look forward to in the coming books.
Gilded Wicked Mirrors is steamy, but there is no smut. The author does hint at later books becoming spicier.
🌹Thank you to the author @hazelstlewis and @thenerdfam for an ARC of Gilded Wicked Mirrors. It was an absolute pleasure to read this book.

« Because all that glitters isn’t gold. Sometimes it’s rotting flesh… or in this case, gilded wicked mirrors. »
Rating: 3 ⭐️ Genre: Fantasy Paranormal Romance Format: ARC Ebook Pages: 448 Spice: 1 🌶️ POV: Third POV S/S: Wicked Mirrors #1 Check trigger warnings for any book
A very interesting world and magic system in this novel.
It took me a while to finish Gilded Wicked Mirrors even though I quite enjoyed the plot.
I loved the two main characters, Quinn and Emrys. I would categorize their relationship as a hate-to-love more so than a true enemies-to-lovers trope. And it very much is a slow-burn romance.
I really loved Quinn as the main character. Her dreams clashing with her duties, her emotions clashing with her morals… Very interesting to follow along her train of thought.
The magic system with the mirrors, the mirror-gods, the bargains the other beings? Very intriguing, I wanted to learn more and understand more.
However I felt like this book tried to do a lot within one story. There are so many aspects to the story that it got a bit convoluted at some points.
The murder, the relationship, the discovery of the lies of society, the two-faced people… All good elements but the way they were told/fit together wasn’t smooth.
The ending revelations also felt odd? It didn’t really make sense or work with the plot in a way.
Overall I did enjoy the first 70% of the book, but the last 30% felt too complex considering the start with too many plot points trying to be tied up.
I think I’ll still give the sequel a chance when it comes out as I did really love the general ideas of the book and the main characters.

A wonderful combination of fantasy, romance and intriguing murder mystery!
The magic system with the mirror and deadly bargains really captivate me from the start. Added with a murder mystery to solved where our main characters are forced to work together to uncover the truth behind the murders…
I absolutely enjoy seeing the delightful flirty banter between our main characters – Emrys and Quinn. I love the tension between the two of them, although I have to admit it got me a little bit frustrated with how long they play this game of pull and push!! I can’t wait to see what happens next after that huge cliff-hanger at the end….
I love most parts of this story, however the last few chapters were slightly confusing for me. So many things happened and it all happened too quickly. The ending left me with some unanswered questions which I’m hoping will be answered in the next book.
Overall, this was a pretty good read. I find the magic system to be unique and it also has wonderful characters. I’m looking forward to read the next book in this series in 2025!
Thank you to Book of Matches Media and the author for giving me an e-ARC of the book and for having me on this book tour. I’m leaving this review voluntarily!
⚠️ 𝐓𝐖: Contains graphic violence/death on the page, and graphic descriptions of bodily fluids (esp. blood)
That ending has me itching for the next book! I really enjoyed the world created in this book, with vampires and mirror gods, and the customs of the world. It’s like ours (back in the day), but with a magical layer. I also liked the balance of our main couple and the plot. We got romance, we got a little heat, but it didn’t really detract from the plot. It was just some seasoning added on to it. I did enjoy how wicked some of the mirrors were, like the one who wanted Quinn to kiss Emrys or else, since that’s what started us on our quest. Emrys has secrets of his own and the mirrors speak in riddles (mostly) and unveil truths to Quinn that highlight the betrayals of those she thought of as friends. Quinn is also a well rounded character. She’s intelligent, she’s talented (ballerina), and she’s compassionate. This is a book that will lure you in with its gorgeous cover and keep you entranced with its gleaming narrative and woven tale.
Thank you Book of Matches Media and the author for my review copy!
Have you ever read a book where you get to the end and you’re just like what the heck did I just read, but you’re unsure if it’s the books fault or your own? Well, that’s how I felt at the end of this one. I was so intrigued with the storyline of deadly mirror bargains, vampires and the enemies to lovers trope, but half the time I was so confused on what was going on I almost had to DNF. I will be honest, I am a fairly new fantasy reader and while I am loving the genre sometimes I don’t think I am "smart" enough to fully appreciate and comprehend some of the world building that takes place. A lot of the chapters felt like info dumps to me and I had a difficult time remembering a lot of it and keeping track of who was who and where they were. By the end I was glad that I had stuck with it to the end as everything started to piece together.
first off, thankyou to the nerd fam for providing me with an arc of this book! RELEASE DATE AUGUST 6TH🌺
this book is amazing! honestly i have been so pleasantly surprised, i cannot wait to read more from this author! if you’re looking for crescent city meets vampires, read this book!!
the plot is thrilling, having a murder mystery amongst vampires, ballet etc! this book never fell flat, i was hooked the whole time & i lovedddd our main character!
emrys was also a fantastic love interest…;)
SPOILER: this would’ve been a 4.5 if i hadn’t called it being jevon who was the one to betray them, given the focus on him being so ‘hidden’ it really made it obvious to me. apart from that the twists and turns really got me hooked. and that ending ! i cannot wait for the next book next year 🤩
Thanks to Nerd Fam for this arc! It was such a fun read! The story sucked me right in! Hazel St. Lewis writing was so easy to read and I was able to dive right into this world building!
This book comes with lots of our fav tropes such as; Murder mystery, shadow daddy MMC (who loves toying/teasing the FMC 🤭), banter / hate to lovers, slow burn, betrayal, vampires, magic/curses, and tons of twists!
Did I mention betrayal?! You’ll be constantly questioning “who can I trust?!”
And the ending?!?! 👀 This does end with a cliffhanger, leaving me with many questions and wanting more from Emrys and Quinn!
So don’t mind me while I sit here waiting for book two lol
This was a great fantasy romance! This book immediately grabbed my attention with its unique fantasy world and its unique mirror magic system. This book did a great job at combining fantasy, romance and mystery. I loved how this book blended the genres and I enjoyed following Quinn as she worked to solve her friend’s murder. There was so much packed into this book, making it a very interesting and captivating read.
Thanks so much to the author and Netgalley for the advanced copy (although I did read it on KU to support the author)!!
I really think this was right book, wrong time. It's 100% not the books fault because the premise is amazing and I feel like if I gave the book a second chance I would love it so I probably will when I'm in the mood for it.
Everything though was so good, the plot and the characters. The setting, I don't think I've read something so atmospheric from page 1, the 1920's New Orleans just screams The Originals and I loved that.
If you want a book that is going to suck you in and make you fall head over heals in love with the characters, and then completely destroy you with that ending, then pick this book up stat! Then you can join in on not so patiently waiting for book 2! I need it. This is a book that you will live and breathe until the final word is read. It will consume your mind and capture your soul in the best way possible. Now, book 2…please, please come out and play!
