Pike's Point

Tim My friends from the UK, Tim Couper and David Knight, will be running 8 games at Historicon with their newly released Test of Resolve: Hundred Years War rules.

One of them involves a number of units of Scottish Spearmen.

Rummaging about, I found these chaps in the Lead Pile from ? 20 years ago.

They are Essex figures IIRC.

I gave the unit Scottish an Burgundian flags, so with some shuffling, they could represent either.

The Scottish Royal flag was created from an image on the web.

The Burgundian flag is a download from Warflag.

All ready for the trip to Lancaster, if not the House of Lancaster! Packing the car starts tomorrow for Wednesday AM departure...

More Medieval Knights - Essex figures

Here's another bunch of Knights from the collection of the late and lamented Bill McHugh.

Once again, the brushwork is very good, especially the barding!

Softy metal lances look good but are bendy!

I just love the barding!

Here's the second group.

The big metallic blob is supposed to be a great mace (the lance had broken off. Not that successful, but it doesn't stick out that much, I hope!

Look at the detail on the green barding in particular!

Very welcome additions indeed!

Medieval Sergeants and Knights - Essex figures

These figures are from the collection of the late Bill McHugh. I acquired them in the Spring of 2019, shortly after his rather sudden and untimrly death

The process of shipping them across the country was not kind to these figures, particularly resulting in many of the lances becoming detached or occasionally, broken. I considered replacing them all with wire versions, but decided against it in the end.

Much epoxy was deployed, and with a bit of repainting and rebasing, and they are ready for the table.  I chose larger, 60 x 50 mm deep bases for these troops, in attempt to protect the some what fragile (and bendy) lances. I think these guys will get magnetic basing as well!

Next are quite a few Late Medieval  (? Crecy, 1346) era) Knights in chainmail and pieces of plate.

The Knight are probably the best painted of all of the troops I acquired from Bill's collection.

Like the bulk of Bill's Late Medieval figures, these appear to be Essex figures.

The paint jobs on the barding are especially impressive. There quite a few more of these Essex Knights yet to come as well.

Army Review: Bill's Medievals and (my) Teutonic Knights

These Late Medieval figures were a mostly unexpected acquisition, and an indirect consequence of my acquiring part of the collection of the (sadly) late Bill McHugh, which was chiefly focused on his excellent Hittite troops.

At the time I got them, in all honesty, I had no idea what I would ever do with them!

Then came a great many  play-by Zoom games  set during the Wars pf the Roses with the new Test of Resolve rules, followed by the plans of Tim and David to run a bunch of WotR games at Historicon 2022.

With the new baggage rules (Airline, not wargames!), it would not be practical for them to bring any troops with them. Thus I found myself, along with long time wargames freind, Ken Baggaley. Essentially all of the infantry are done, and many were used in games last month. There remains about 40 or so Knights on cloth barded horses. Those will need more tough up and lance repairs. They are "small" 25's, and will likely make to core of a French HYW army. I'll just need to find some small 25 mm infantry to go with the, Come to thuink of it I have some that Joe gave me 20 + years ago, that would probably be very suitable. Hmm...

As IO was doing this Review, I realized that I have never done a review of my small Teutonic Knights army.

It is composed almost entirely of mid 1970's Minifigs.

The figures were more inspired by the motion picture "Alexander Nevsky" than strictly historical garb, specifically the Battle of the Ice in 1242, where Alexander and his foot soldiers defeated the Teutonic Knights and their Estonian allies.

Not a large force, but it has seen quite a lot of action over the 40 + years since I painted them!

Sergeants, Knights, and a few members of the Order itself.

Infantry, including spearmen, crossbowmen, skirmish archers, and axe throwers

More Sergeants and Knights.\

Some Medieval war engines for support and or Castle sieges!

Bombards and Archers and Crossbowmen, oh my!

Sort of a potpourri post of Late Medieval Odds and ends!

These "Crusdaer" era bowmen and Knight were given to me a number of years ago.

They were drafted for possible emergency use with the WoTR/HYW project. I believe they date back to our time at UConn together circa 1974, and were probably painted by Steve Gallagher.

Some of Bill's Crossbowmwn, accompanied by a spare stand of Billmen.

Judging by the broad noses, the Crossbows are Essex!

The guys in Blue and Purple look vaguely Japanese?

Yep, potpourri!

2 more stands of skirmish Crossbows.

Definitely Essex!

I like the individual crossbow casts.

More colorful from behind!

This medieval Bombard casting had been in the lead pile for about 20 years.

Essex, I believe?

Just painted last month; crew are recycled from an earlier post; need to get more!
