Boxing Day Review of my Ancient Indian Army

Of course, we don't observe Boxing Day in the US, but it always seemed very civilized to me to havbe a holiday the day AFTER Christmas as well. With Christmas Day falling on a Sunday this year, most of us in the US had the day off work, myself included.

Still, a fine day for a parade and review of my recently expanded and now "completed" Indian Army.

Here it is in all its multitudinous glory!

In total there are 7 Elephants, 2 four horse chariots, 3 two horse chariots, 8 figures of Light Cavalry, 24 Medium cavalry ,and  12 Heavy Cavalry.

The foot troops comprise 24 Light Infantry (mix of Archers and Javelinmen)  and  96 Medium Infantry Archers, 48 Medium Infantry Spearmen, and 12 medium Infantry 2 handed Swordsmen (who could represent either of the two types after falling back upon their secondary weapons!).

Finally, there are 2 mounted and 7 Foot command figures. Total for the army thus is 180 Foot, 44 Horse, & elephants, 5 Chariots, and 9 command figures; call it about 250 figures depending upon how you count the Chariots and elephants!

Left flank, mostly previously painted Minifigs.

Left center, mostly previously painted Minifigs again, although they went substantial reorganization, rebasing, and some minor paint updates!

Right Center - mostly recently painted Old Glory and Newline Designs figures.

Right Center - a mix of Minifigs, Old Glory, and Newline Designs figures.

That should be pretty much a wrap on these Mauryan Indians. They are a bit light in the Elephant arm for an Indian Army, though...

Ellie the Elegant Elephant!

The final entry of the trio of Elephants for my expanded Indian Infantry, is the elegant Ellie.  She is a Newline Designs figure; the General mounted on an Elephant, if I recall correctly.

She makes her entrance clad in shades of violet, lavender, and dusty rose.

Silver bells, silver bells - it's stomping time for the pretty!

With Ellies exit, we have come to the end of my Indian Army expansion; look for an Army review later in the month!

Ponderous Pachyderm

The second of three Elephants joining my Indian Army.

Elephant model is by Old Glory, the crew are a mix of Old Glory and Newline Designs.

I put a tiny spot of white alongside the black of the pupil to make it seem like it is looking at you.

Stomp! Trample!

Indian Heavy Cavalry #2

This is the last of the Cavalry units added to my classical Indian army.

Once again the bulk of the figures are Old Glory, while the standard bearer is from Newline Designs.

Tehjr assignment is likely to be holding off enemy cavalry long enough to let their Elephants, Chariots,  and infantry prevail.

No lack of color here!

Indian Medium Cavalry #2

Here's the second of two units of Indian Medium Cavalry

Figures are once again Old Glory with command figure by Newkline Designs ("trumpeter").

Colors used include Delta Ceramcoat Turquoise, Caribbean Blue, and Azure.

Not much armor in sight on these guys!

Mounted Indian Commanders

A pair of mounted commanders - figures by Newline Designs.

These "officers"  from the Indian Mounted Command set were conveniently but intentionally extra after using 10 Old Glory and two out of the three Newline Designs figures for the Medium and Heavy cavalry. units

They cab sever to command the Mounted troops of bothh wings of the army.

"To the Strongest!"

Indian Heavy Cavalry #1

Better protected and/or better trained, these are Indian "Heavy Cavalry"

Once again, the figures are mix of "old and new"; Old Glory, and  Newline Designs (the trumpeter), that is!

The bronze and purple look is in vogue this year!

Getting the Javelins to glue in place was a nuisance!

"Alpine Meadow" flocking on the bases.

Indian Medium Cavalry #1

The first of four new units of Indian cavalry trots off the painting desk!

The bulk of the figures are by Old Glory; this unit's shields and the standard bearer are from Newline Designs.

Cavalry were not held in particularly high esteem in the Indian armies of this time.

In to the Strongest terms, these are Cavalry, Javelin, Raw.

At very least, they will be cheap!

Mauryan Indian Army: Refurbished Infantry Units

The core of my Indian Army is composed of  Minifigs, painted back when I was in Medical School.

The units originally had 2 stands each, and were organized for use with our "Legio Quaternarius" rules.

There were 4 figures per 60 mm wide stand for for these close order troops, according to the original WRG basing.

Thus each such unit has now been expanded by adding 4 Newline designs figures - an officer, a standard bearer, a drummer, and a hornist.

The Archers (and there are LOTS of them), were simpler, being organized again ion 2 stand units, with 3 figures per stand for formed units, and 2 for skirmish units. There were already some units with Minifigs command elements, mostly officers.

I mostly just needed to paint over the distinctive color of some of the figures to make the numbers come out right.

Where needed, one or two Newline Designs command figures were added to round out the numbers.

The discrepancy in the size of the figures isn't too great.

I haven't shown any of the units that were just reorganized and rebased, just those that had new figures painted and added.

In all, 12 Newline Designs figures were added. When the additional cavalry, mounted leaders, and Elephants are done, hopefully later this year, it will be time for a grand review!
