Hobby, etc., Plans for 2025, and request for input

Aside from the broad goals for painting, posting, gaming, and expenditures (ahem!), it's time to think about more specific plans for 2025. That was made a bit easier recently, when HMGS revealed their theme for Historicon 2025, The Us Army. As I have no Americans (at present), that will have no impact upon my Historicon planning this year!

Histioricon

1) Games with To the Strongest

I'm definitely thinking Chariot Wars theming this year - Egypt, Hittites, Sea Peoples, Libyans, Assyrians, Babylonians. I have a number of friends considering TTS! games, and those would all probably be set in later eras. This will require a modest expansion of my Sea Peoples and Libyans; the Lead for those is already in hand, as well as some terrain additions, some of which are ordered and some must be built.

2) Big Napoleonic Game with Field of Battle

The plan is for this one to be Peninsular, perhaps Bussaco or Fuentes de Onoro? That will require chiefly more Portuguese troops, the lead for which is all in hand, and painting of which is well under way.

3) Avoid over booking - yeah, right!  :-)   Run no more than 1 game per day, so that I have some time to shop and play in other games for once!  We'll see!

HAVOC

I'm considering attending HAVOC (in Massachusetts, early April) again this year, especially if Thomas will go so that we can share a room and the car drive. If so, plan would be to perhaps run a Hussite or Punic Wars battle with To the Strongest!, and perhaps a Napoleonic Battle with simple rules (Waterloo in Two would work, as would a variant on Eagles Cheaper than Brain Cells, for a little more depth and a slightly longer game (HAVOC slots are usually 4 hours).

New Period(s)?

I have 2 new Periods in mind to start, probably later in the year:

1) 1066 and all that - i.e., Vikings, Anglo Saxons, and Normans - blame The Last Kingdom, as well as the upcoming Bretwalda KS game.

A great series. watched it 2 years ago.

and that lead to supporting this project in 2023; delivery due (hopefully!) May 2025.

2) American Revolutionary War (it's about time I had some American troops!)

Surrender of General Burgoyne at Saratoga; living in Southern New England, focus would likely be on actions in New England and the Mid Atlantic.

Both would be 25/30 mm scale for figures, but I am very uncertain as to what manufacturer(s) to use. Old Glory has a decent range, and I'm thinking about using Crusader Miniatures. Once again, I am sure there are a great many other options I haven't even considered.  Organization for the 1066 project would be straightforward as I'll use To The Strongest! for rules, 60mm bases, 2 bases for light infantry and all cavalry, 4 for formed infantry, and 6 for Warbands.

For the American War of Independence, though, rules and organization are yet to be determined, and I'm undecided as to what manufacturers to use... Perry, Brigade Games, and Fife and Drum all have pretty good ranges. I am sure there are a number of  other s as well!  Obviously determining the rules to be used is key to determining organization, etc.

So here's where I'd really appreciate some input from my readers as to manufacturers and also rules for the AWI!

Non Wargaming:

My long range plan was to probably retire, or at least cut way back on my hours at age 70 1/2 (which used to be the age that one had to start withdrawing funds from retirement accounts, but that is now up to 73+). However, as I have been explaining to my patients the past few months, "I found myself a new job"! I have been teaching medical students from about my second year in practice, so nearly 40 years, and am presently Clerkship Director for Family Medicine for my employer of the past 8 years, Nuvance Health Network in CT and NY states. Nuvance itself is set to merge with the much larger Northwell Health later this year once the state of CT gives us approval (NY state already has). Anyway, "Clerkship" is the rather archaic term for the clinical rotations that medical students do, traditionally in their 3rd and 4th years, and most last 4 to 6 weeks each. I really enjoy teaching, and usually have a medical student with me most of the time.

I practice in New Milford, CT, the birthplace of Roger Sherman, the only man to sign the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights, and the author of the Connecticut Compromise  (which is why we have the House of Representatives, with number of Congresspersons for each state determined by population, and the Senate, with 2 senators for each state regardless of population). New Milford Hospital merged first with nearby Danbury Hospital in 2010, then became part of  the new Western Connecticut Health Network when we were joined by Norwalk Hospital in 2014. My office moved into the hospital itself when I became employed in 2017. WCHN in turn merged with the 4 hospital Health Quest network in Western NY and Sharon, CT in 2019, just in time for the Pandemic! This pattern of mergers and acquisitions (and a rapid transition form self employment to employment by large entities by physicians) has been widespread across the US the past 15   years or so, for a variety of reasons, mostly the Law of Unintended Consequences, bought on by the US Government's well intentioned but ill advised and ever more extensive meddling in the US health care non-system.

In any event, since we joined with Danbury Hospital, which has quite a number of Residency programs, I have been nudging them to establish a residency program in Family Medicine. Last year, they started serious efforts to plan for doing just that, and in October 2024, we got preliminary approval to start the program, with the inaugural group of up to 4 Residents to start in July 2025; final approval is due by the end of this month. As a part of this, I agreed to become one of the three Core Faculty members of the program; my primary responsibility will be teaching, supervising, and evaluating Residents, especially in the office setting. They will use the office space in the Hospital where I am presently practicing, which had a major expansion in 2023. I will still treat some of my own patients, although that will dimmish gradually over time, as the 3 year program grows to a maximum of 8 Residents in July 2026, and 12 Residents in July 2027 (and the 2nd and 3rd year Residents spend increasingly more time in the Family Medicine office).  I figure that's going to keep me working at least 3 days a week for another 3-5 years! We have assembled a pretty impressive core and supporting faculty for the program, and have already started recruiting and interviewing for July; the rather odd "Match" system for allocating candidates to Residency training programs finalizes in late March.

The program has a recruiting video - probably much more than anyone here wants to know about! :-)

FRIDAY

F10:135 : Northampton (July 10, 1460) Friday, 10:00 AM, 3 hrs, Players: 6, Location: Heritage: HR-13 GM: Tim Couper Sponsor: None, Prize: None Period: Wars of the Roses, Scale: 28mm, Rules: Test of Resolve: Wars of the Roses

Will the rain dampen the artillery power and the Lancastrians enthusiasm? Will Lord Grey s white lie make him a blackguard? Players should be at least 14 years old.

I'll be supplying the figures and terrain for these games (Tim and David are flying in from the UK, and the cost of bringing extra baggage has gone way up form 5 years ago) using test of Resolve, which I played a great many playtest games via Zoom in 2020and 2021!

One more Phalanx needed for this game; it's 80% done now.

Description: After the disastrous Ottoman defeat at the battle of Vaslui at the hands of the Moldavian King Stefan, the Ottoman Sultan, Mehmed II, takes matters into his own hands. Stefan is eager for the challenge and awaits... The rules are easy to learn, yet rich in unit character with challenging command decisions. Ages 14 and above welcomed

S19:598 : Leipzig: Battle of Wachau, October 16, 1813 Saturday, 7:00 PM, 4 hrs, Players: 10, Location: Independence: IN-1 GM: Peter Anderson & HMGS Next Gen Sponsor: None, Prize: None Period: Napoleonic, Scale: 28mm, Rules: Battle Command by Brent Oman

Description: Napoleon's best chance to have prevailed at Leipzig occurred on the first day, in the fighting to the South of the city against the Army of Bohemia. If he had soundly defeated this force, it might have driven Austria out of the War. In the event, he fell short. Maybe this time will be different? (Battle Command rules are similar to but different from Field of Battle by the same author).

This one will take a while to set up - I'm suing a 15 foot long table!

Post Historicon Plans

Typically, Historicon and my plans for same dominates the Spring and Summer of each year from a gaming perspective, and this year was no different. Similarly, it usually takes me a month after I return before everything is packed back away, and I start to give thought to painting and future projects again!

So what is on the (ever subject to change) agenda for the remainder of 2022?

1) Organize the non Napoleonic portion of my collection better, with labels on the Really Useful boxes holding the troops, so as to minimize  time lost searching for the right box.

Having been home on "stay-cation" last week, very good progress has been made on this project.

2) Finish the additions to my Napoleonic Spanish Army.

Well underway, with the Horse Grenadier of Fernando 7 and a unit of Cazadores a Caballo in progress. There will then just be a mule drawn limber to complete.

3) Finish the expansion of my Classical (Mauryan) Indian Army.

The infantry is all done, but there remains Cavalry, Chariots, and Elephants to add.

4) Add more troops to by ECW Scotts Army

There is plenty of lead on hand; most likely next up are some Highlanders.

5) Games

We played a great Napoleonic game with FoB3 at Jared's new home in Torrington, CT, last month; post forthcoming. Hopefully some more games there as schedules allow.

Run about 1 game a month at my home, likely on Thursday afternoons

Assist with he Snappy Nappy Campaign in a Day event the end of October at The Portal in Manchester, CT

Runa game or two for HMGS Next Gen this Fall

The Dog Days of Summer - Brooke and owner, Dr. Kristie Anderson, DVM, dock diving at the local Bridgewater Country Fair this p[ast weekend.

Now on to the plans and projections!

Expenses:

Last year was nearly $3,000; I expect 2022 to be an expensive year as well, with  purchases already high in the first month. We'll see if we can hold it under $2500 for 2022.

Painting:

Both 2021 and 2022 were all time high years for painting; I doubt I'll be able to match them for a third year in a row. We'll aim to exceed 2400 points this year. If COVID continues to limit travel, the total could exceed 3,000 points again. Major projects are a moderate sized WoTR force for use with Test of Resolve and planned games at Historicon 2022, completing the expansion of my Mauryan Indian army, all those Wurttemburgers from the Kickstarter, and quite possible some additional Napoleonic Spaniards. I have plenty more Ancients and assorted Napoleonic's to paint any time the spirit moves me as well.

Games:

I managed 26 games last year, the most in a long time. 2 games a month on average is doing quite well - Goals is 24 games in 2022. It would be nice if HMGS would announce the Theme for Historicon 2022, though. The theme isn't usually a big factor in deciding what games to run there, but it definitely has an effect some years!

Blogging:
2021 was a record year at 116 posts here as well. Goal is 100 posts or more for 2022.

Rules:

This is the one area I fell far short in 2021. Goals there are the same or more than last year!

There at least 5 different Napoleonic rules sets in the sights - Blogger sets Eagles Cheaper than Brain Cells and 123! Napoleonics, plus a Napoleonic variant(s) for Bloody Big Battles (Jared has been using this last with his students), an updfated Morschauser set, and a playtest of Poquer when Bob Jones releases the next playtest version. .

Verbatim from last year: Several Napoleonic Age of Sail rule sets to try as well - Grand Fleet Actions in the Age of Sail and Form Line of Battle.

Also almost verbatim from last year: For my large collection of Superior Starfleet Wars/Galactic Knights ships, play at least one game with Starmada, Stars and Lasers, and Ascension of the Galaxy (from a Kickstarter).

Hobby Plans for 2021

Covid-19 disrupted just about everyone's plans for 2020, and makes planning for 2021 a challenging matter as well! On the personal COVID front, I had my first dose of the Moderna mRNA vaccine 10 days ago (no side effects except some mild expected arm soreness), with dose #2 to follow in early February.

Expenses:

I will keep the allowance to $2000,  and hope to come in well below that. If Historicon does not take place, I should end the year well under budget.

Painting:

I doubt I will be able to match 2020's production of over 3,700 points, but I'd like to paint at least 2000 points worth.

1) Add to my French and Austrian Napoleonic armies (already my largest, mind you). I have lead on hand for a LOT of Austrians and quite a few French as well. No purchases needed here!

2) Some additional ECW reinforcements (Cavalry and Artillery - Old Glory, already ordered)

3) Paint newly acquired/to be acquired Chariot era additions - Peleset, Libyans, a few Egyptians, etc.

4) Add to my Mauryan Indian Army for To the Strongest! Lead already ordered. I still have some remaining lead for the Macedonian/Thracian forces.

5) Paint the Murawski Polish Horse Artillery and Krakus. It looks like Murawski is now planning to do the Baden Hussars, which will be a Must Buy, even if they don't get painted this year!

6) Maybe start on my Darkest Africa project- I have a fair amount of lead on hand for that now.

Games:

Try to exceed 20 games run/assisted with/played in this year.

Historicon is the big question mark. It looks at least an even chance that it WILL happen this July, although it is likely to be restricted (see the plans for Cold Wars) . That makes it very difficult to plan any games. There is certainly no way I could see doing a Campaign in a Day event there in 2021, but 2022 is a distinct possibility.

For the same reason, I don't think 2021 will be the year to run a Siege game using Vauban's Wars at Historicon... but we'll see. 2022 would be much more likely

One or two games with Field of Battle 3rd edition are likely to be on the roster (? Albuera 1811), as well as one or more games with To the Strongest/For King and Parliament. One posibility would be doing the Battle of Qadesh.
A game with the 15mm Renaissance Galleys (Galleys and Galleons rules) on Sunday AM is a definite possibility.

If Covid looks better by early Summer, it might be possible to consider doing a Campaign in a Day event in Connecticut in late September/early October.

Blogging:

Maintain about the same number of Blog posts - circa 100 per year.

Rules:

I still have a lot of sets that I want to try out!

There at least 4 different Napoleonic rules sets in the sights - Blogger sets Eagles Cheaper than Brain Cells and 123! Napoleonics, plus General d' Armee and a Napoleonic variant(s) for Bloody Big Battles (Jared has been using this last with his students)

Several Napoleonic Age of Sail rule sets to try as well - Grand Fleet Actions in the Age of Sail and Form Line of Battle.

Also for my large collection of Superior Starfleet Wars/Galactic Knights ships, play at least one game with those rules, as well as Starmada and Ascension of the Galaxy (from a Kickstarter).

Mid 3rd Quarter, 2020; Quo vadis?

Yes, I have been painting some Romans, and no, this post is not about the book or the film (opening scene above) of the sane name. Quo vadis literally means where are you marching to, or where are you going? Usually by mid August I have recovered from Historicon and am ready to consider where the end of the year will take me, hobby wise. This year of course, Historicon, like almost every other convention after Cold wars this past March, was a casualty of the damned Covid-19 pandemic, and any of the usual conventions this Fall seem more or less out of the question. Tim Couper from the UK and I are already planning to attend Historicon 2021, although even that us far from a sure thing at this point. Ergo, Quo Vadis, Petronius? (with simncere appologies to anyone out there who actually understand Latin grammar!)

First of all, given the continued relative dearth of gaming, the accelerated assualt upon the famous Lead Pile is likely to continue through the end of 2020 at least. Napoleonics and Ancients have seen the bulk of the action thus far, with a smattering ECW unist for spice. The same trend is likely to continue, with the refurb and rebase project on Bill McHugh's Chariot Wars figures obtained, sadly from his estate,  last year being already well underway. Other possible additions would be some additional Renaissance troops, and making a start on muy small Darkest Africa/Congo project.

Second, I have been doing quite a bit of Zoom gaming ()to be covered in a later post) with Tim Couper and David Knight (both located in Scotland), play testing a new set of rules for the Wars of the Roses and related conflicts that they have been working hard on developing. I expect that to continue for some time. My one attempt at hosting a Zoom game was less than successful when I discovered that the never used camera in my laptop was non functional. A webcam has been obtained, but I have yet to tackle setting it up. To the Strongest would appear to continue to be a good candidate for Zoom games.

I hope to hold a small FTF socially distanced game or two, probably in the garage, in September/October if the Covid-19 pandemic remains pretty quiet here in Connecticut (after a very harrowing Spring, we have had among the lowest rates of Covid-19 in the US for several months now). That could change quickly, though, with the return of kids to school in various fashions happening soon.

Certainly, some continued solo gaming remains a high probability. I continue to have quite a few rules sets that I want to try out, including FoB3 for the ECW, Grand Fleet Actions for the Age of Sail, and several Sci-Fi naval sets. Then there are Mark's 123 Napoleonics, General d' Armee, and Eagles Cheaper than Brain Cells on the Napoleonic front. Fionally, late in the year, some Congo scenarios might appear.

On the professional level, I am slated to decrease my (nominal) office hours from 4.5 days to week (about 60 - 70 hours worked per week) as of October 1st. So what did I do?  I accepted a new job as Family Medicine Clerkship Director for our Network, starting October 1st! Am I dumb, or what, LOL! Actually, I've been teaching 3rd year medical students (as well as a few NP and now PA students) in my office since about 1985, and at one time or another have held appointments as an Associate Clinical Professor at 4 different medical schools - The University of Connecticut, Quinnipiac University, American University of the Caribbean, and the University of Vermont. The job entails supervising the 3rd year students clinical rotations (called clerkships in the odd terminology of medical education... don't ask me why!); making sure thety all have a place to go for training, overseeing the process and quality of experience, some formal teaching sessions, and doubtless other annoying duties that I will be learning too much about shortly, I fear !  :-) I will continue to teach individual students in our office, which is really a high point of my work life.

Of course, as anno 2020 has so amply demonstrated, no plans ever survive the encounter with reality intact! I hope that all of you stay safe meanwhile!
