Abrams/Lore
“This book is dangerous. I can't let it fall into the wrong hands.
Hard hitting, hard headed, and hard drinking; Detective Abrams has been a fixture on the New York investigating scene for years. From stolen art, to missing persons, to ritual murders; Abrams didn't just take any case that came across his desk... he solved them.
But his days of following cheating spouses came to an end the day he opened his office door and found The Tome sitting on his desk.
No instruction was left for him save for a brief note scrawled in onyx blood that read "Don't let them have it". Abrams hasn't figured where the thing came from; but seeing as his home has been broken into, his office tossed on 3 different occasions, and his car firebombed he has a vested interest in figuring out what the hell is going on.
Overview
[edit | edit source]Abrams' goal in the ritual is to destroy the Tome.[1][2]
Biography
[edit | edit source]Abrams is Ixian.[3] He was likely born in Ixia and seems to speak their native language.[4][5] Unlike Infernus, Abrams does not demonstrate control over fire. It's implied that Abrams didn't always live in New York, and it's unknown when he moved to the city.[4][6]
For years, Abrams was a skilled private detective and a fixture on the New York investigating scene, known for taking and solving any case that came across his desk.[7] Abrams' detective agency is called "Abrams Investigations", with the slogan "we specialize in the unknowable and unthinkable".[8] One of his cases in the past had him working alongside Venator.[9] Abrams has also been investigating the Paradox Organisation.[10]
He lives in an apartment in New York, and his office can be seen in The Binding of Oathkeeper. Outside of work, Abrams is a regular at Jezebel's and plays in Wraith's weekly poker game.[11][12][13]
When the Tome was left in his possession, Abrams' life suddenly turned upside down as his home and office were broken into on several occasions and his car was firebombed.[7] With his life at risk, Abrams stopped going to Jezebel's and Wraith's poker games to focus on finding out what the Tome is.[14][15]
The Tome itself is shrouded in mystery. It's known to be capable of stealing life and seems to have a mind of its own, as it occasionally tries to fly away from Abrams (which Abrams can capitalize on, allowing him to cast Seismic Impact).[16][17] The Tome was also used to conjure Oathkeeper a long time ago.[18] Abrams expresses little control over the Tome,[19][20] and describes it as something "ancient" and "powerful".[21] Knowing that the book is dangerous and can't fall into the wrong hands, Abrams has chosen to participate in the ritual so the Patrons can destroy the Tome.[1][2]
Personality
[edit | edit source]Abrams is stubborn, stoic, and slightly pessimistic. He has a grounded view of the world and is skeptical that the Patrons will follow through with fulfilling his wish.[22][23] That said, Abrams is not unkind, often showing compassion and concern for tragic characters like Holliday and
Pocket.[24][25]
While stoic, Abrams still gets flustered when talking to Lash and when
Dynamo teases him about moving into Lady Geist's apartment in The Binding of Oathkeeper.[26][27]
Instead of simply dumping the Tome or hiding it somewhere, Abrams feels a personal duty to destroy the Tome to make sure it can't ever fall into the wrong hands.[14] The duty of protecting the Tome has made Abrams paranoid towards anyone who shows interest in it.[28][29]
As a detective, Abrams is often inquisitive of his allies, asking questions about their lives (such as how Seven survived his execution).[30] Abrams values honesty and the truth, no matter how depressing it can be.[31]
Information
[edit | edit source]Abrams likes to drink whiskey.[32][33]
Since his car was firebombed, Abrams has been forced to use the bus to get around.[34]
Character Relationships
[edit | edit source]As a regular at Jezebel's,[11] Abrams is friends with Infernus and refers to him as "Fern".[35] Abrams also calls Infernus "his bartender".[36]
Abrams plays in Wraith's weekly poker game.[13] Wraith calls Abrams "Abe" and considers him as one of her customers.[37][38]
Mo and Krill are friends with Abrams, and play at Wraith's weekly poker games together.[39]
Abrams owes Mo and Krill $50 from their last card game together.[40]
Silver is old friends with Abrams, referring to him as "Abe".[33]
According to Silver, they used to make "bad decisions" before Abrams became "boring".[41]
Abrams is friends with Celeste and her found family. He knows Blockhead Lenny is having troubles and asks Celeste how he's doing.[42]
Abrams seems to be one of the few people outside of Celeste's family who knows she's secretly a unicorn.[43]
Abrams has worked on a case with Venator before.
While Abrams' side of the conversation is missing, Venator and Abrams had an incident at a brownstone where Venator made a judgement call that "saved lives", despite Abrams' concerns about Venator's methods. What exactly happened in the brownstone is unclear, but Venator doesn't blame Abrams for "not having the stomach to do what needed to be done", and considers Abrams to be a good man.[9]
Vyper
[edit | edit source]Vyper seems to be familiar with Abrams, referring to him as "Abe".[44]
While Vyper comes across as friendly to Abrams, Abrams seems to frequently brush her off.[45][46]
As mentioned in the biography, Abrams has been investigating the Paradox Organisation outside of his case with the Tome.[47]
Paradox threatens Abrams to stop asking questions about them.[48]
Character Interactions
[edit | edit source]- In one of the endings of The Binding of Oathkeeper, Abrams moves to
Lady Geist's apartment.[49]
- Abrams is surprised that
Infernus has never visited Ixia.[50]
Graves' mentor,[51]
Lady Geist,[52]
Paradox,[53]
Venator[54] and
Yamato[55] have shown interest in taking the Tome off of Abrams.
Seven is fascinated by the Tome, but isn't interested in taking it.[29]
Grey Talon says his "stepdaughter" is Ixian, like Abrams.[57] However, it seems that the intended term was "daughter-in-law", as evidenced by Talon's background and Abrams' response.
Victor asks Abrams for help with uncovering his origins.[58]
The Binding of Oathkeeper
[edit | edit source]- Main article: The Binding of Oathkeeper
Abrams makes an appearance in Lady Geist's visual novel, The Binding of Oathkeeper.
Note: The Binding of Oathkeeper is currently inaccessible to the main game, instead being something planned for release in the future. As such, everything in the current visual novel is prone to change, as it is still undergoing development.
Abrams plays a significant role in storyline B in The Binding of Oathkeeper.
In chapter 3, Abrams visits the gala set up by Lady Geist to find someone who can help her with her failing ward containing Oathkeeper. Abrams gives Dynamo his business card, asking him to give it to Lady Geist.
In chapter 4, Lady Geist meets Abrams at his office. Abrams shows his Tome to Lady Geist, asking her to place her Oathkeeper hand on a ripped page. After Oathkeeper screams out, Abrams and Lady Geist deduce that the Tome is related to Oathkeeper, now intending to summon the Patrons for answers.
Some time passes as Lady Geist and Abrams succeed in summoning the Patron. Abrams accidentally wastes his wish on asking how Oathkeeper is related to the Tome, only getting told that the Tome was used a long time ago to conjure Oathkeeper. Lady Geist wishes that the missing pages of the Tome be restored, so Oathkeeper would be bound to the Tome instead of her. Now that the Patron has left, Abrams is still stuck with the Tome, now with Oathkeeper inside of it. Lady Geist initially doesn't care about Abrams' fate until Abrams points out that Oathkeeper would come for her if the people after the Tome ever released him. Understanding that her life is still at risk, Lady Geist gets Abrams to move in to her apartment.
Storyline B ends with Lady Geist placing the Tome on a bookshelf in her home, acknowledging that her and Abrams' fates have been intertwined until they can find a way to destroy the Tome.
Removed Lore
[edit | edit source]Removed character interactions
[edit | edit source]- Abrams originally had a kill line towards
Lady Geist swearing to stop Oathkeeper if it was the last thing he did.[59]
Neon Prime - Atlas
[edit | edit source]In Neon Prime, Abrams was originally a character named Atlas.
Atlas wore a jetpack and was a time soldier of the Lost Battalion.[60] He was implied to have drinking problems.[61]
