Into the Undercity Pt 3

Hello and welcome back to my blog.

It has been a busy few weeks here. As usual I try to fit some hobby time in when I can to help me unwind and retain my sanity (for what that is!). It is now time for a update of what I have got done. I have been working largely on undercity terrain.

An undercity tower. Built from Mantic's Sci Fi Urban  District Kit. Or the remains of a couple of the kits at least.

Like my other undercity efforts using the Mantic terrain I have painted them to look like salvaged panels and bulkheads from old starships. One of the nice thing is that these pieces could as easily be used out in the Wastelands of Mattblackgod's world.

I quite like the mantic kits & will get more in future. Some of the clips can be fiddely and I think the kits could do with an extra sprue in the box. I would like to one day (space & cash flow allowing) to make a SF tunnel set or maybe star ship interior from the Mantic kits.

Another abode from Mantic's SF battlezones kits.

I printed the posters off on my printer.

Mantic's SF kits are not the only kits in my collection. There is the old Robogear ones too. Here is another undercity abode.

This has been based to hide the few millimeters difference in the height with the Mantic terrain.

I also decided to add a few details to this model. The vent is a Mantic base with embroidery mesh in it. The barrels are from the Mantic accessories sprue.

The striped access hatch was a spare Robotech panel. I added it and used putty to make it look like crude welds.

Low cover or supply objectives. These come from a pair of Mantic Accessory Sprues and glued to MDF  bases.

Undercity (long dead) air purifier. These may also be found out in the wastes from the planetary terraforming days, on the mean streets of Utopia City or with in the City Blocks. They could even be a part of the life support of a star ship or space station.

The model is an MDF kit by Wargame-Model-Mods. I was going to paint it in my typical grey scheme but I felt like a bit of color.

This kit comes with another building to follow in another post. The kit has plenty of detailing vents and other bits now spare which will be used for detailing other models.

So far I have to base and detail the other Robogear platformer bits for the Undercity. There is a bunch of Pringles tubes which need to be used somhow in this project.

Thank you for looking.

Into the Undercity Pt2 - Terrain

I have been working on some Undercity terrain for beneath the mean streets and Mega Blocks of Utopia City.

The undercity consists of many domes, caverns and lost cities that was buried when the City was built and as it expanded to become a megacity. Huge towers loom up into the darkness holding the dome and cavern ceilings up.

The tower is an ex pringles tube. The base is a cork pan coaster with the edges nibbled to make it look like a rocky outcrop. The graffiti is inspired by the Metro 2033 Novel.

The platforms are made card and bits from the depths of the bits box. The ladder is scratch built from coffee stirrers and match sticks.

Beware the strange green mold growing every where. It can cause strange illness'. Some strange wastelander has tagged this tower.

I have some of Mantic's Deadzone terrain sets knocking about. It is ideal for an undercity on a world that used starships to colonize it.

Here is a security outpost.

No security outpost would be complete without a barricade.

Okay not quite Undercity but it is Post Apoc. A bed from Thunderchild Miniatures.

The Warboys want a kip but are not too sure if the occupant will mind.

Radiation Bob's

Over on the Post Apocalyptic Wargames Forum the 2015 Warlord's Challenge is to make something to do with a Trader. It can be a vehicle, figure or terrain. As I am currently working on a set of Undercity Terrain I decided to make something in that vein. One of the nice things about the depths and caverns of a ancient city is the terrain also fits the Post Apoc wastelands genre nicely.

So weary wanderer come bring your salvage to Radiation Bob's for great trades!

Radiation Bob's started life as a plastic tub you get Christmas Puddings in. Once the delicious seasonal treat had been scoffed it was cleaned up. Staring at it for few minutes I decided that it looked like an ancient abandoned reactor or something similar.

A few minutes with a glue gun, knife and a pile of drinking straws and the basis of the Trader's station was formed.

The base is a cork pan coaster found cheap at Home and Bargains. The edges were broken off to give a broken rock look. The whole plot was then attacked with items from the depths of the bits box. A load of textured paint was applied. Once dried it was sprayed with matt black (what else?) car primer. Later a layer of grey car primer was used.

Some of the rubble and the rubble wall out front of Radiation Bob's are bits of the cork base.

The electrical power boxes are the  covers you  get on three pin plugs. The barrels, crates and milk urn are press cast milliput (I made Latex molds some years ago to stop my terrain obsession breaking the bank every time I needed some model accessories).

Rusty brown and orange make up most of the metal work paint. I decided that hand painted signs would be in order. Graffiti was also added most of which is inspired by certain Post Apoc films.

That's it....remember to come to Radiation Bob's for a great deal!!

Thanks for looking.

Into the Undercity....Terrain

Deep under the streets and the foundations of the mega blocks of Utopia City lies an unseen world. A world as brutal as the wastelands beyond the mega city walls. A world of perpetual darkness. Lets creep through the cracks and explore a world of darkness, hazards, mutants, cutthroats and monsters.....

Down in the depths there is many strange things. Old hab domes, city streets and forgotten machines. You know...um....thingies?!

This thingy is made from an old pringles tube and a load of old junk from other projects. The pringles tube got hacked to bits to give a crazy angle. Tape and paper hold it together.

This terrain is intended to be used as a dice tower. I always wanted to make one. In true post apoc style I made it from junk I had laying about.

The tower in action.

Surprisingly there are many outcasts from Utopia living in the darkness of the Undercity. They form communities and gangs. There are many townships and trading posts.

Some like the trading post below are made from parts of the grounded star ships which originally founded mattblackgod's world.

This is the water trader. Water....everyone needs it, right?

There is also a weapon and ammo trader on this block.

This is a Mantic Deadzone terrain set which I painted to look like lots of salvaged panels. The water tank is an old coffee can and the pipes are drinking straws.

The Mantic sets are easy to use but sometimes the connectors need a bit of brute force to clip them together.I have also had a plastic connector snap on me. Maybe I am too ham fisted?! I glued my sets together as I intend these pieces to be permanent. I only used superglue just in case. There is still some parts left so expect some more of these in the future.

The great thing about the Undercity project is that this terrain can also be happily used in the wastelands. There is also a place on mattblackgod's world where a starship fleeing (the Typhon) the orbital bombardment crashed back to the surface. This makes up an area known as the Skrap Lands. Lots of the buildings and defenses in these wastelands are made from starship parts.

Undercity Terrain WIP

On mattblackgod's world lies Utopia City which survived the Apocalypse.  Think 2000AD's Mega City One. Like MC1 Utopia has a massive under city beneath the foundations, sewers and service tunnels. GW's Necromunda's under hive is also a massive inspiration.
First up I thought I would make a dice tower for the under city/under hive.

Constructed from a pringles tube, scrap bits of foam board, plastic card and cork tile.
Top side of the dice tower.

This is the first of many towers (I have been stashing pringles tubes for some time). I see these  towers as massive columns holding the top of the caverns.

Made from a cork pan tile, a pringles tube, lollypop sticks and scraps of card/mesh from another project.

The ladder is bits of matchsticks and coffee stirrers.

There is also a trader post. Radiation Bob's Trading post.

The base is a cork pan tile (home bargains), the body is a nuka Xmas pudding tub, bits of cork and other junk for the walls an barricades. Press mold made barrels and crates. The pipes are straws.

That's all for now....There is some small details to add and then it's paint time.

Thanks for looking.

Bio Booster Armour Mk1 & Service Droid

While experimenting on various forms of Power Armour, the Hypero Corporation developed a form of organic armour they dubbed Bio Booster Armour. Unlike regular Power Armour the Booster links directly with its pilot, or host, bonding with him or her. During field tests it was found that after a matter of weeks the pilot was absorbed by the suit. Hypero undeterred, went forward and continued trials ultimately killing 25 pilots. Before pilot 26 could be installed, the suit some how escaped (or was stolen) into the undercity levels of Utopia City. All attempts to capture the suit have failed. Some speculate that the suit has fled into the wastelands.

Mini is a repainted EM4 Alien.

I feel a mention of The Mighty Flip from the Post Apoc Wargames Froum and flipsminiatures is worthy here, as I have nicked his idea and background fluff for the Bio Booster suit. I just changed some names ...Thanks Man. The Rad Beers are on me!

In Utopia City most of the menial work is done by robots & service droids. In many blocks old droids such as this one can be found carrying out repairs and cleaning.

The mini is by Heresy Miniatures.
