Quando saí do Music Garden no outro dia, tomei o elétrico na Spadina Ave. para a estação de metro.

Numa das paragens reparei neste bonito edifício.

“Este edifício foi construído em 1909 por um talhante local como imóvel de rendimento e foi rapidamente alcunhado de "gaiola de pássaros".

Nos anos de 60 e 70 serviu de sede de algumas editoras canadianas: House of Anansi, New Press e Press Porcépic.

A excentricidade desta casa deve-se à  mistura anacrónica de estilos."

When I left the Music Garden the other day I took the streetcar (tram) on Spadina Ave to a subway station.  A few stops later I saw this beautiful building.

“This building was built in 1909 by a local butcher as an income property and was quickly nicknamed “the bird cage”.

In the 60’s and 70’s famous Canadian publishers lived there: House of Anansi, New Press and Press Porcépic.

The oddity of this house comes from the anachronistic hodge-podge of styles.”

Onda de calor ou tempestade de neve? Heat wave or snowstorm?

Estamos sob um alerta de calor.

Um terço da população norte americana (canadiana e americana) – ou seja cerca de 130 milhões de pessoas -   está a viver uma onda de calor.

Neste momento a temperatura é de 33º C, mas com a humidade, é como se estivessemos a 46º.

Faço-vos uma pergunta:

O que escolheriam: Onda de calor ou tempestade de neve?

(Sei que alguns dos meus leitores nunca experienciaram tempestades de neve, mas podem responder...)

The temperature at the moment is 33º C with humidex values of 46 – 47.

Novas experiências - New experiences

O meu pequeno tesouro, com ano e meio, é uma menina muito viajada!

Já fez cinco viagens aéreas (cada viagem tem dois voos... por isso pode ser considerada uma veterana), “conhece” quatro aeroportos, vê de vez em quando alces a atravessar a rua em frente de casa e veados nos campos.

Mas, porque vive numa pequena cidade, nunca tinha estado num grande centro comercial, entrado num elevador ou subido/descido numas escadas rolantes... o que quis fazer várias vezes.

At one and a half, my little treasure is a well traveled girl! She has traveled ten times by plane … considering that there are no direct flights to her destination… somewhere in British Columbia and she has been in four airports. She is a veteran! 

She has seen moose crossing the street in front of her parents’ house and deer crossing roads in remote areas.

However, because she lives in a small city, she had never been to a large shopping mall, ridden in an elevator or used the escalator… which she wanted to do several times.

While I was pushing the stroller, she was paying attention to the window displays, the vast space to walk around, the children in other strollers and the pastries on display at this window!

Foram estas algumas das suas novas experiências nestas semanas em que tem estado em minha casa.

Ah! Também foi ao Joey Pub, durante a Happy Hour, e parece ter gostado imenso. Portou-se muito bem, comeu sem deitar comida para o chão (ao contrário do que acontece em casa) e fazia adeus a todas as empregadas, prestando mais atenção à loirinha que nos atendeu!

E também provou o meu mojito virgem!

Later I took her to Joey’s Pub so we could enjoy the happy hour offers. My little girl enjoyed herself immensely. She behaved very well, ate without throwing food to the floor (unlike what happens at home) and waved to all the servers, paying special attention to the blonde young woman who was responsible for our table.

She also tasted my virgin mojito!

I am teaching Portuguese to a one and half year old at the same time she is learning her first language.

Concerto ao ar livre, gratuito, no Music Garden do Harbourfront, com o Cénacle de Montreal que tocou música de câmara  dos fins do século XVIII , dos compositores Giuliani, Gassmann, Toeschi e Haydn, com os seguintes instrumentos de época: oboé (instrumento de sopro de madeira), viola d’amore (instrumento de cordas friccionadas) e contrabaixo.

Não me tinha apercebido na semana passada que podemos tirar fotos antes e depois do concerto e durante o intervalo. Como não tinha levado a máquina fotográfica, usei o telemóvel.

I realized that we can take pictures inside the auditorium before and after the concert, and at intermission.

St. Andrew’s Church is a large and historic Romanesque Revival Presbyterian church.

Uma igreja aninhada entre os arranha-céus no outro lado da sala de concertos.

A church nestled among the highrise towers of Downtown Toronto on the other side of the concert hall.
