Sisters Statuary, MK1 Land Raider, PK-Berichter

These models were my second-last post in the Analogue Hobbies Painting Challenge!

The model is from Manufaktura Miniatures. It's a 3D print I've painted as statuary to fit the theme of the old-school all-metal Adepta Sororitas army I'm building for Warhammer 40K.

The Manufaktura figures are superb but it has to be noted, mostly "NSFW"... I've chosen one here that fits my taste but many of their models are... explicit. So be aware of that if you search them on the Web or visit their site. I bought this one from a stockist on eBay so wasn't really aware of the nature of the range before I visited their website... thankfully not on a work computer :-)

The model is really exquisite, well sculpted and great print quality. Painting was a breeze of course, no "grisaille" or "Zorn palette" necessary. The pillar I did before - very flexible as the space on the top fits a standard 25mm round base so I have created statuary to fit many gaming themes.

Next up was a Propagandakompanie Kriegsberichter with his own movie camera and "PK" cufftitle.

This is a metal model from Warlord Games' Bolt Action range and painted up a treat. I painted him as an enlisted man with the early-war lemon yellow waffenfarbe, since according to Angolia and Schlicht's "Uniforms and Traditions of the German Army" the cufftitle (see previous photo) was likely discontinued when the PK-guys got their own grey waffenfarbe colour rather than piggybacking onto the signal-troops' colour.

Im einsatz, making a TikTok of a passing Pzkpfw. 38(t).

Lastly for this post we have a real blast from the past, an original Land Raider with just a couple of modern updates. I acquired this model in a trade on the weekend, fixed the doors, primed it black and painted it earlier this week.

As we all know, this is the Ur-Land-Raider first produced by Games Workshop back in 1988 and made available for retail purchase in a box of two models, for 12.99GBP no less!!

But remarkably, although I've been playing 40K myself since 1989 or so, I'd never owned an original Land Raider model, until now!

As I said, this model came to me in a trade (along with a MK1 Rhino) and needed some work. A previous owner appears to have replaced the sponson lascannons, it had Forgeworld Iron Warriors doors, and a modern exhaust stack and dozer blade has supplanted the originals. Still and all, not bad for a nearly 35-year-old model.

I started by removing the resin doors and replacing them with standard modern Land Raider doors, cut out a bit to accommodate the big hinge. I also stuck on some very cool Heresy-era eagles from a modern Age of Darkness vehicle sprue.

The 'Raider accompanied by Iron Warriors Siege Tyrant Terminators.

I also put together a new hatch with storm bolter. Fortunately the modern 40K parts fits this old model to a tee.

Alternatively, this 'Raider can be fielded with a pintle-mounted multi-melta. This one is from the Forgeworld pintle-mounted weapons set. Handy.

A bit better view of the door, decals and weathering here.

It was a really straightforward paintjob, although I regret not having any Modelmates/Dirty Down Rust Effect for the eagle. Once I get some more of it I'll tune that up. In any event it's a really cool model and will fit in well with my Iron Warriors 30K force.

Now we're almost caught up!

Painting Challenge Entry - Imperial Militia Rhino's and Land Raider

One of my ongoing projects is my Imperial Guard / Traitor Militia for Horus Heresy. It's a simple olive green paint job that goes on quick and looks decent. Late last year I painted up some Alternative Armies Ion Age Retained Knights to represent Rogue Trader humans in power armor to be used for the Age of Darkness H H rule set.  I decided they needed some transports, so dug out some old rhinos and gave them a 30k makeover with bits from Blood & Skulls Industry. The rhinos are about 20 years old and were originally for my Salamanders Army. They were then repainted and then stripped. As such, they were in rough shape. Here are some work in progress pictures.

The resin parts come in several pieces and you have to saw off the Rhino exhaust pipes to fit the new bits on. It was actually pretty easy, so long as you have a small saw. Here are the completed rhinos:

28mm Infantry is for scale only

The Eye of Horus displayed prominently.

I also picked up the new plastic Land Raider Proteus for Horus Heresy and painted it up for the command squad. I went light on the upgrades as this army is lucky Horus gave them a Land Raider at all!

Thanks for visiting.

Squat Land Raider Proteus and not-Thudd Guns!

Escalation continues in the vintage-Squat project, with a vehicle and some support weapons. The Land Raider Proteus is the new GW "Horus Heresy" kit, which itself is a throwback to the old old Land Raider. The not-Thudd Guns are 3D prints (the Renault Pattern support weapon carrier) printed for me by Conscript Byron of Northern Lights Terrain, and their crews are from Wereweevil Miniatures.

First off, the Land Raider Proteus. The new kit from GW is amazing. A great throwback to the original Land Raider, but with modern detailing and tooling. Pretty easy to assemble and looks fantastic!

I assembled the model as the "non-transport" variant with the twin heavy bolters. All variants come with twin sponson lascannons, of course.

The model was painted with GW Castellan Green and Deathworld Forest, then washed with watered-down Agrax Earthshade. It was lightly weathered with sponge chipping and dirt drybrushing, starting with dark brown and working lighter. The tracks were basecoated with a Vallejo "track base" colour, then painted with a rust powder and water mix, washed with Agrax Earthshade. Rust streaks were done with a fine brush and a mix of Reikland Fleshshade and old Chestnut Brown ink.

The powerplant looks great.

I used some tac numbers from the standard GW vehicle set and the Imperial Fists roundel from the Land Raider sheet. I cut out the "fist" from the middle and painted the inside white. It worked OK and meant I didn't have to try and freehand a circle. The insignia itself is the "F-rune" and is a nod to the original Space Dwarf/Squats box set.

Here's the vehicle commander! He's made from a plastic Squat torso with some conversion work on the arms and hands. He just sits in the hatchway.

I drilled out the hinge and inserted a very fine piece of wire, so the hatch can be opened and closed. I do have some concerns about the long-term viability of this solution though...

Next up are the not-Thudd Guns! I found the STL for these as I was looking for 3D print files, as the original Thudd Guns are $$$$$$ if you can even find them. I think they turned out pretty well.

they're suitably industrial-looking for sure.

The gun breaches and crew platform.

Now with crew. These models are from Wereweevil and come with a not-Termite launcher - basically a mortar that shoots a shell through the ground instead of through the air.

Here they are as produced by Wereweevil.

The backs of the models. These figures are actually really nice and as you can tell, fit in well with the old-school Squats from GW.

So that's some important Squat support troops done - now I have to get to the command section and some more bikes!

Inferallti Hussars Transport and Heavy Flamer Squad

A while back I started a new 30k Army based on the Imperial Militia and Cults army list for Horus Heresy based on the "Old Hundred" regiment known as the Inferallti Hussars. The army list allows for extensive customization in the form of Provenances of War that bestow special stats and bonuses usually in exchange for certain restrictions. On of the options is survivors of the dark age. For people unfamiliar with Warhammer 30k, it follows a period known as the Age of Strife which saw the technological achievements of the previous era largely lost. however, not all societies fell quite so hard and some remnants maintained more advanced technology from a bygone age. Rules wise this Provenance provides +1 to all units armour saves, representing more advanced armour. This rule also allows you to take rhino's and a Land Raider Proteus as a dedicated transport! Thematically, I wanted to add both to the army. I painted up a rhino a while ago, but kept putting off the Land Raider. Last week I finally managed to get to it.

I also painted up a heavy weapon squad. The army list allows you to field a base squad of 5 heavy weapons. The options include all the usual options for an Imperial Guard army with the addition of heavy flamers! With the survivors provenance, they get a 4+ save too. I used a 10 man squad of Forge World Solar Auxilia flamer section mounted 2 to a base.

I doubt this army would perform well against any of the Space Marine Legions, but that's fairly thematic. It sucked to be a normal dude fighting alongside superhumans.
