Anniversaries Can Sneak Up On You

For example, a friend emailed me an update on some awfulness that went down on Morning Joe and I suddenly realized that just a few days from now will mark the one year anniversary of the day I stopped paying any attention to what Squint and the Meat Puppet had to say about anything.

Or, with a couple of rare exceptions, pretty much anything any of Comcast's on-air employees or their rotating casts of recently former Republicans have to say about anything.  If the legacy media has sent me one clear, unambiguous message over the past decade it's that they don't care about my issues at all.  They're not speaking to me and the wise and seasoned voices I would like to hear represented somewhere in media are almost nowhere to be found on cable news.

Elsewhere, the Scott Jennings/Abby Philips reboot of "Hannity and Colmes" is tedious and repetitive.  A cartoon where nothing fundamental ever changes.  His lying smirk will be there until they close the place down, and no amount of faux "calling him out" or "showing him up" will change the fact that this is just Konflict Kabuki designed to keep eyes on the babble box between dick pill commercials.

And the appointment of a right wing despoiler like Bari Weiss to gut CBS coupled with Norah O'Donnell's rolling over and giving up in the face of Trump's torrent of lies on 60 Minutes was sad.  Inevitable, but sad.  Like watching the end of Poltergeist --

-- a haunted, cursed place finally collapsing and imploding into nothing.

Taken all in all, it's somber portrait a dying wasteland, but considering my wife and I do this every day for a living, you know what?   I'm not one jot less informed or aware than I was before going on the cable news wagon.

Amazing what the power of "I don't care" can do.

Remember When MSNBC Had Rachel Maddow Out There Pimping For Greta Van Susteren?

I do.

Don't bother looking for the video on the MSNBC website.  It has outlived its usefulness.

In case you were wondering what Greta The Great is up to now, no surprise that she's gainfully employed by Newsmax, and out there hyping Trump just as hard as Rachel Maddow once hyped her.

Circle of life or something.

Centrism's back baby! And Michael Steele's Got It!

Now that the MSNBC/Bulwark axis has completed the rehabilitation of Michael Steele and, after MSNBC race purge, given him one-third of his own weekday show, Steele is now firmly a member in good standing of that inner circle of recently-former Republicans who will control the direction of the last little corner of the "liberal" media on cable teevee.

And in his ad on The Bulwark for his own podcast, Steele gives us a hint about who he thinks the "liberal" media should be leaning towards:

Politics.  Culture.  You name it, we're talkin' about it.  And we're keeping 100% real right here on the Michael Steele podcast.  I'm Michael Steele.  I'm the host of the podcast. Each week I'm having conversations with political analysists, writers and activists who aren't afraid to shake things up.  A little bit like yours truly.  It doesn't matter if you're on the Left, the Right or somewhere in that strong Middle, this is the space you wanna be in...

If I had to guess, as a complete outsider with no network contacts at all, but with a pretty good track record of making these sorts of predictions, I would guess this gives us a preview of where MSNBC is headed in the near future.

Fact is, MSNBC is dying.  We'll, truth be told, cable news as a whole is dying, but MSNBC is leading the race to the cemetery.

From The Independent, December 18, 2024:

More bad news for MSNBC as they hemorrhage viewers and are now losing to NewsNation in weekend ratings battle

Amid plummeting ratings since Donald Trump’s election last month, several of the liberal cable news network’s programs on Saturday finished behind the centrist cable news upstart in the key 25-54 demographic.

From (so sorry) The New York Post, February 26, 2025:

‘Fox & Friends’ extends ratings lead as MSNBC’s ‘Morning Joe’ loses nearly half its audience since election.

Thanks to a long series of stupid mistakes made by the network's stupid shot-callers, MSNBC has put itself in an impossible position.

They don't want to lose whatever is left of their Liberal audience...

But they also refuse to sack Joey Joe Joe Junior Scarborough and his side piece and his menagerie of hacks, which is one of the major reasons liberals are staying away in droves...

Which means they very much need to attract replacement viewers so their ad rates don't drop to the point where only dick pill and prepper survival pack purveyors are willing to spend coin on advertising on MSNBC, because then it's back to six hours of LOCKDOWN! in the evenings...

But the chances of attracting any MAGA Republican viewers are slim to none, unless they pull a Newsome and start stunt-casting MAGA mopes like Charlie Kirk and Candace Owens.  Which will definitely drive away even more of their liberal viewers, because if I want to watch that trainwreck, I'll just wait until someone posts it on YouTube...

So, sooner or later,  the cable new shot-callers will once again begin listening to the siren's song of the same old snake oil salesmen peddling the same old nonsense about there being a vast and underserved audience of politically active and aware Centrists out there just over the horizon.

And if the shot-callers just had the courage to lard their lineups with Third Way/No Labels/Country Over Party/Purple Project/Forward Party talking-heads, by jiminy, they could not only put on the best show this hick town has ever seen, but save the family farm to boot!

And that is where I believe MSNBC is headed.

And it is for circumstances just such as this that, in the early 1600s the writer M. Day coined the expression "a fool's errand".

Job, Jobs, Jobs

These days one hears stories from all over about devastating cuts to government programs, and about the capricious and destructive mass firings of government employees.

Having been on the receiving end of no less that three savage and incompletely conceived and executed firings from which I never recovered, my initial impulse was to sympathize with the newly unemployed.  And having spent nearly two decades in workforce development in one role or another, I am also keenly aware of the terrible ripple effect that mass layoffs can have on a family, a community and a country.

But when a higher authority tells me I'm stupid and wrong about all of this, well, I guess I need to be humble enough to have a seat and learn a lesson.  Because all these layoffs were of government employees, and no less of an authority than the now-former head of the Republican party (pre-Trump) is on record as saying that government jobs aren't real jobs.

Shocking, I know, but I'm just a nobody blogger typing away from wat out in the middle of Middle America, and this received wisdom came directly from the man running one America's two major political parties.  And he didn't mutter it into the dirty microphone of some podcaster no one had ever heard of: he said it on one of the Sunday Showz, back when people actually watched the Sunday Showz.

Only private sector jobs are real jobs, ergo, ipso facto, QED something something government jobs aren't real jobs and therefor don't count.

Period.

I wrote a whole long thing about it back when this was the official policy of the Republican party (pre-Trump), which I will link below, but you know me.   Maybe I was drunk.  Maybe I made the whole thing up on a lark.  Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of Liberal bloggers?  So let's turn to PolitiFact to see if I'm lying.

Michael Steele stated on January 31, 2009 in a speech to House Republicans:  "You and I know that in the history of mankind and womankind, government — federal, state, local, or otherwise — has never created one job."

Steele says government has never created a job.

Michael Steele, the former lieutenant governor of Maryland, recently won a contest to lead the Republican National Committee. He also made history as the first African-American to lead the party.
One of Steele's first appearances was before a retreat for House Republicans on Jan. 31, 2009.  Steele praised the House Republicans for voting as a block against the stimulus package promoted by Democrats and President Barack Obama. Then he said that the stimulus was pointless, because government can't create jobs.

A week after talking to the House Republicans, Steele appeared on This Week with George Stephanopoulos. Stephanopoulos showed Steele video of Republican Gov. Charlie Crist of Florida praising the stimulus bill. Steele didn't seem to back off the spirit of his previous comment.

Steele: "Well, no — you know, with all due respect to the governor, I understand where he's coming from. Having been a state official, I know what it means to get those dollars when you're in tight times. But you've got to look at the entire package. You've got to look at what's going to create sustainable jobs. What this administration is talking about is making work. It is creating work."

Stephanopoulos: "But that's a job."

Steele: "No, it's not a job. A job is something that a business owner creates. It's going to be long term."
Stephanopoulos: "So a job doesn't count if it's a government job?"

Steele: "Hold on. No, let me finish. That is a contract. It ends at a certain point, George. You know that. These road projects that we're talking about have an end point. As a small-business owner, I'm looking to grow my business, expand my business. I want to reach further. I want to be international. I want to be national. It's a whole different perspective on how you create a job versus how you create work."
I thought all video of this event had been lost or scrubbed, but digging around in my archives I found that, in addition to my long, angry post about it, I had actually made my very own video record of it, with a little twist at the end.

I guess I figured I  might have another use for it someday.

(Not Work Safe)

Turns out, Steele is a very handy fella to have around, because he will say anything his employer pays him to say, no matter how obviously ludicrous it is.

When Democrats elected the first black man as president, the deeply racist Republican party had a sudden, urgent need to have a black face out front swearing that they weren't racist at all.  And Michael Steele answer the call!

When Republicans needed a black man to explain that, sure, the GOP used to be racist, but all the bigots scampered back to the Democratic party in 1992, Steel was only too happy to do that job too.

...Well, guess what happened in 1992, folks, 'Bubba' went back home to the Democratic Party and voted for Bill Clinton."

After he was deposed as party chair, Steele would go on to explain how, despite driving all the racists out of the party during his tenure as party chair, the racists had all, somehow, mysteriously reappeared after he had been voted out.  So mysterious!

Sometime during Trump's first term, Steele began gradually making appearances on MSNBC, decrying what had happened to his party...over the previous three or four or five years.  You will have no doubt noticed long ago that has always been the time horizon for almost all Never Trumpers:  the party was doing great until they ran me out.  Then, suddenly, with no warning...

And over time, Steele successfully completed the MSNBC Republican Reputation Rehabilitation program --

Former RNC Chair Michael Steele Erupts On-Air: To Hell With Republicans!

-- to the point where he began showing up as a substitute host here and there,  began the rounds of the A-list political podcasts, and was given 1/3 of his own show on Saturday morning.

Then, last week, after MSNBC completed it racist purge of on-air talent, like the RNC back in 2009, MSNBC needed a familiar black face out front, reassuring the public that everything was okily dokily.

Joy Reid’s MSNBC Show Canceled in Major Shake-Up

Ms. Reid’s 7 p.m. program will be replaced by a panel show co-hosted by Symone Sanders Townsend, Alicia Menendez and Michael Steele.

Snide and Prejudice

I had to interrupt listening to Tim Miller scolding Liberals, again, that our litmus tests are too stringent.  Going on and on about how, if he just put on a swastika red hat he would instantly be accepted back into the brownshirts Republican zombie brigade.  But us snooty Liberals have"standards" that are just too damned high.

Which made me laugh and laugh and laugh and laugh given that, whoever those slightly-higher-than-no-standards-whatsoever-havin' Liberals may be (it's me), somehow I never actually see any them on my Liberal teevee.  Instead, MSNBC has been virtually colonized by Never Trumpers like Tim Miller, thus giving them an even wider platform from which to lecture Liberals about how we never cut recently-former Republicans and now-current MSNBC contributors like Tim Miller and Nicole Wallace and Risk Wilson and Charlie Sykes and Matthew Dowd and Tara Setmayer and Sara Longwell and Tom Nichols and Mona Charen and Michael Steele and Joe Scarborough and on and on and on any slack.

Anyhoo, I had to interrupt my regular scolding about my unfairly high standards...

...because of the breaking news that MSNBC's Resistance Heroes #1 and #2 -- Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski -- had stabbed us in the back.

Again.

Funny old world, init?

The Enemy of my Enemy is...

Making nice with the incoming fascist regime.

"What we did agree on was to restart communications" -- Morning Joe hosts Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski announced this morning that they traveled to Mar-a-Lago over the weekend to meet with Trump

This will have come as no surprise to anyone who noted (as we did) "Morning Joe"'s lightening-fast pivot from praising Kamala Harris for running a nearly-perfect campaign (pre-election), to dumping on her for blowing it (pre-election).

Never Trumpers like Squint Scarborough and his Meat Puppet Mika are the walking, talking embodiment of Groucho Marx's famous, "Those are my principles, and if you don't like them... well, I have others."

As a dog returns to its vomit... because Joe has always been at war with Eastasia, and he always will be.

Elsewhere, Brian Stelter has described loyal "Morning Joe" viewers as "furious about the Trump meeting."

And I've gotta say, "loyal Morning Joe viewers" sure is a funny way of spelling "credulous chumps".

Eddie Glaude Jr. is Immensely Proud of and Deeply Fascinated By Everything Eddie Glaude Jr. Says

Some people use rain sounds to relax them and lull them to sleep at night.  Some people us whale songs.  Rumor has it that Eddie Glaude Jr. uses recordings   of Eddie Glaude Jr. talking in very long and spiraling sentences about how awesome Eddie Glaude Jr. is.  The cadence of a Creflo Dollar and the rising self-important sing-song academic umbrage of that professor in whose class almost all of us found ourselves entombed at least once in our lives.

So relaxing, it could put coffee to sleep.

Once upon a time Eddie Glaude Jr. contented himself by using his words to explain to a national audience why he heroically could not vote for Hillary Clinton.  Just couldn't do it.

Then, after Trump won, Eddie Glaude Jr. explained to his national audience how deeply disappointed he was that white folks had let him down.

Wrote a whole thing about it here.  "Of Time and the River and Eddie Glaude, Jr."

So why is Eddie Glaude Jr. still a regular on Morning Joe?  Because Eddie Glaude Jr. knows the secret of beltway media success.  The One Rule to, uh, rule them all.  You know the one.

And so, when challenged about his staggering hypocrisy,  Eddie Glaude Jr. knew exactly which "Eject" button to push.  The same one all of our most dodgy Never Trump allies push all the time.  The one marked "It Has Been Decided At The Highest Levels That These Goofs Are Now Our Allies And Friends So Quit Asking Embarrassing Questions About What They Were Doing Before 2016".

And so, when asked embarrassing questions about what he was doing before the 2016 election...

And if he'd just kept his pie-hole buttoned then maybe he could have blended into the furniture and props of the Morning Joe set like the cushions and the table and Mike Barnicle.

But as I may have mentioned Eddie Glaude Jr. is immensely proud of and deeply fascinated by everything Eddie Glaude Jr. says, so it is not in his nature to, for the love of Touchdown Jesus, just shut the fuck up and cash that check.

And so, inevitably...

When this dropped, wiser heads stepped aside as qualified professionals arrived on-scene to properly spit-roast Mr. Eddie Glaude Jr.  For the record, here are a few of their rejoinders.

There were hundreds like these, but this one was so gloriously below the water line it shoulda sunk him.

But you must remember that Eddie Glaude Jr. is never not the hero of the Saga of Eddie Glaude Jr.  And so...

For today, here endeth the lesson

The Revelation According to Chuck

[Note:  This post more or less the content of our early edition the Pro Left Podcast which dropped yesterday.  I was half way through putting this together when Blue Gal and I decided we really should podcast about this very fertile subject ASAP.  So if you've already listened to our podcast, please feel free to skip this...and/or just scroll straight to the bottom and drop much coin in the tip jar :-)  As always, thank you for your support.]

As most of you know, for the better part of two decades I ran a feature on this blog called "Sunday Morning Comin' Down" which was a weekly rundown of how America's Most Prestigious Political Talk Shows were failing us.

And over time I gradually tapered off because, let's face it, after a while it was just poking a dead possum with a stick.  It's not playing.  It's really dead.  And it's starting to smell so...

But every now and then something weird happens.  Something which, to the uninitiated, can appear as though the Beltway media has Learned a Lesson.  That the now-long-dead possum is somehow staggering back to its feet.

I can assure you this is never the case.

Instead, what you are seeing when this happens is a kind of media post-mortem flatulence: the decomposing husk of the media twitching and farting as if there were something "journalistic-y" still going on in there.  And that's what happened this week, on Meet the Press, that's got everyone's panties in a bunch.

But first, let's take a step back so that we all understand what we're talking about.

Meet the Press is a weekly network broadcast teevee show that is aired by NBC.

NBC is a subsidiary of NBCUniversal News Group.

NBCUniversal News Group. is a subsidiary of NBCUniversal Media Group.

NBCUniversal Media Group is the television and stream division of NBCUniversal Media, LLC.

NBCUniversal Media, LLC. is a subsidiary of Comcast.

Which, as every 30 Rock fan knows, is owned by Sheinhardt Wigs.

Jack Donaghy breaks it all down here:

All of which is to say that NBC/Comcast/Whatever is a Very Large corporation, and all those people you see in front of NBC cameras -- every one of them -- are merely employees of that Very Large Corporation.

That Very Large Corporation sells a lot of different products and services.  Cloud computing.  Cybersecurity.  In-home fiber optics.  And way, way down that list are teevee shows.  And way, way down the list of teevee shows is Meet the Press, which many people mistake for a news show that does journalism, but it isn't.  It is a news simulacra.  As Velveeta is technically not real cheese, but rather, a "processed cheese product", Meet the Press is not "news" but rather a "synthetic news-like product".

Every week, on Meet the Press, various well-paid performers put on costumes and stage a news-like performance.  What historian Thomas Zimmer refers to as "neutrality theater".

Like a stage play or puppet show: everyone knows their role and plays their part.  And in between segments, various advertisers pay NBC/Comcast/Whatever a Very Large sum of money to run ads for Skyrizi and reverse mortgages.  That's how everyone involved in the project gets paid.

So, in this marketplace, what exactly is being sold and to whom?  Is news the product?  Nope.  Are  Skyrizi and reverse mortgages the product?  Nope?

You are the product.  Your attention.  Your eyeballs.  You the audience are being sold to the advertisers. Ergo, the bigger the audience, the bigger the payday.

Conversely, the smaller the audience, the smaller the payday.  This is why a 30-second Super Bowl ad costs seven million dollars, and an ad for a local body shop on local teevee costs nine dollars and a Whitman's Sampler box of chocolate.

From The Washington Post, September 18, 2022:

Can the Sunday morning talk show be saved?
After declining ratings and an exodus of VIP guests, these Washington institutions are looking for ways to tweak an old format

...
“Trump established the reality that he could address a very large audience very quickly just by using his thumbs alone” on Twitter, says Mark Lukasiewicz, a former ABC and NBC News executive who is now dean of Hofstra University’s communication school. “The Sunday shows are no longer the gatekeepers for political conversations on TV. They were born at a time when politicians needed TV to reach their audience. That’s far less true today.”

...
The number of younger viewers — the 25-54 age group valued highly by advertisers — has dropped by one-third, weakening the shows’ financial viability.

...
“Fox News Sunday” and “Meet the Press,” which each lost about a quarter of their audience over the past four years, have both been doing some tinkering, too.

So media corporations like NBC/Comcast/Whatever try out all kinds of bad ideas, because they're not in the journalism business or the democracy business.  They're in maximizing advertising profits in a shrinking market business.

Swap out the words "client" and "creative" and swap in "democracy" and "journalism" and Mad Men's Duck Phillips has it just about right.

And if you're in the business of maximizing profits in a shrinking market for synthetic news-like products, and the market for right wing garbage is already saturated, and your network executives just plain hate the Left with the heat of 1000 suns, what is there left to exploit but a non-existence Center, where Conservatives are scattered around here and there like throw pillows to let wingnuts know they're being heard...and there are enough pureblood Both Siderists around wringing their hands about The Extremes on Both Sides to make the cowards in the middle feel safe.

And what about the Left?  Fuck the Left!  Have I mentioned that network executives hate Liberals with the heat of 1000 suns?  So instead of putting on Liberals to talk about the long, ugly trajectory of the GOP that led them from Nixon to Trump, they repurpose a tiny handful of Republicans who have been run out of the party over the last few years.  Instead of Digby, Sam Seder, David Pakman, Hal Sparks and Blue Gal, you get Charlie Sykes, Tom Nichols, Bill Kristol, Amanda Carpenter and Matthew Dowd...all with their incredibly inconvenient pasts washed simon-pure by the narcotic magic of teevee and the amnesia of the general public.

And it's working.

This is from me, 1000 internet years ago:

So who's to blame?

Frankly, the audience is to blame.  Because NBC/Comcast/Whatever does this shit all the time, and there are never really any consequences.    However fondly the masses may recall Tim Russert, he was bad enough that Meet the Press was Dick Cheney's prefered network for spreading lies and propaganda.  When Russert died, NBC put David Gregory in the big chair, and he was fucking awful.

At the end of his run they replaced him with Chuck Todd, who was worse in exactly the same way.

After eight years of Todd, they replaced him with Kristen Welker, who was worse still, also in exactly the same way.   They threw a huge bag of money at Megyn Kelly, who bombed, but got to keep the money.

I'm now going to repeat the phrase "they learned nothing" several times as a head-fake because it isn't strictly true, but bear with me.

Over at little brother network MSNBC, am I the only one who remembers the failed "Too Far Right" campaign, from which MSNBC learned nothing.

Brian William came and went, and they learned nothing.

Mark Halperin came and went, and they learned nothing.

Chris Matthews came and went, and they learned nothing.

Steve Schmidt came and went...and came and went..and came and went, and they learned nothing.

They gave Hugh Hewitt his own show, and it bombed. Hewitt came and went, and they learned nothing.

They gave Greta Van Susteren her own show, and even had network superstar Rachel Maddow push the hell out of it.  It bombed.  Van Susteren came and went, and they learned nothing.

Except, they did learn something.  They learned how passive and docile their core audience is over the long haul.  You can make a huge mistake -- piss on their leg and call it a warm spring rain -- and they'll beef loudly for a little while, but in the end they'll come back, and their Big Mad will fade away.

After all...where else are they gonna go?  To the blogs?  To the radio?   To Democracy Now!  Blog are dead.  Liberal radio is dead.  And DemocracyNow is somewhere north of station 978 if your cable company carries it at all.

Face it...

And now, for a mere 300K, they've picked up Ronna McDaniel.  For NBC/Comcast/Whatever, that's fire sale pricing.  That's literally 1/100th of the price they paid for the Megyn Kelly fiasco.  Very low risk, with a a decent potential upside.  Just like that other former-RNC chair they picked up on the cheap, Michael Steele.  Now they'd have a matched set, and can't you just imagine the boozy corporate pitch meeting where everyone thought this was a genius idea!

After all, outside of a few gripes from nobody Liberal bloggers and podcasters , MSNBC audiences have been nice and pliable when it comes to the colonizing of the network with former Republicans.  Michael Steele is still a completely amoral grifter and a Republican and remains a reliable Both Siderist, but where he was once "WTF is Michael Steele doing on my Liberal TV?" , now he's a Hero of the Resistance.  Not long ago, Bloody Bill Kristol was "the wrongest man in America" according to MSNBC superstar Rachel Maddow.  Now Maddow is semi-retired from MSNBC, and Kristol is the beloved, kooky uncle who drops by every now and then to trash Trump, yuck it up with rapper Fat Joe and talk about the good old days.

But this weekend, when NBC rolled out it's newest addition -- Ronna McDaniel -- things took a turn.

Oh my yes they did.

First came the rollout with this note to network staff by NBC News senior vice president of politics Carrie Budoff-Brown on Friday:

“It couldn’t be a more important moment to have a voice like Ronna’s on the team.  She will contribute her expert insight and analysis on American politics and the 2024 election across all NBC News platforms.

“As we gear up for the longest general election season in recent memory, she will support our leading coverage by providing an insider’s perspective on national politics and on the future of the Republican Party — which she led through some of the most turbulent and challenging moments in political history.”

This meant that Welker's already ill-advised interview of McDaniel on Meet the Press was no longer an interview of the former RNC chair, but an interview with Welker's newest colleague!  And as we know, one of the Iron Rules of the Beltway media is thou shalt not talk shit about thy colleagues at the same company.

Then came the blowback, which  blew in from every direction.

From Vanity Fair, two days after the announcement:

Ronna McDaniel Won’t Be Appearing on MSNBC: Report

Intense internal backlash has followed NBC News' hiring of the former RNC chair as political analyst.

Just days after NBC News announced it was hiring Ronna McDaniel as a political analyst, MSNBC’s President, Rashida Jones, told employees that the former Republican National Committee chairwoman won’t be contributing on air to the cable network, The Wall Street Journal reported Saturday.

The decision to hire McDaniel was met with intense public backlash, leading to her resignation in February as the head of the GOP. Critics pointed to her close ties to Trump and her behind-the-scenes role in his attempt to overturn the 2020 election.
...
The WSJ reported that “a number of MSNBC anchors and producers have voiced concern internally” about the hire. Some current and former contributors and employees have also gone public. On Friday, MSNBC columnist Marisa Kabas posted on social media a screenshot of an email she sent to Brown, in which she encouraged her to “reconsider” the hire. “As columnists, we are held to strict standards of factuality and truth, and are expected to have a fundamental understanding of our democracy,” she wrote. “McDaniel has proven time and again that she adheres to none of those values.”

And then perhaps someone high up the food chain -- presumably higher up than NBC News senior vice president of politics Carrie Budoff-Brown -- sent Chuck Todd in to do damage control, or maybe he took it upon himself.  (h/t Crooks & Liars):

And while the uninitiated saw this as a moment of high drama -- Chuck Todd re-entering the arena to defend Truth, Journalism and the Meet the Press way -- to those of us in the business, this was a moment of high comedy.

During his tenure at Meet the Press, Chuck Todd never had any qualms about platforming Republican liars and lunatics who Todd knew were liars and lunatics.   And this has always been the transparently pathetic thing about Todd.   He is forever oscillating between grand pronouncement about the High Principles of Journalism, and then, on a different day with a different audience, breaking down the ugly realities of keeping NBC's synthetic news product profitable.

In a July 2021 interview in The Verge magazine,  Todd explains that he "[doesn't]ever want to be in the access game" while bemoaning the fact that "the access game is paying a lot of bills in the social media influencer and cable news space."

And yet here he is in 2014 as the newly-minted host of Meet the Press explaining that he knows full well that without playing the access game, he'd be out of a job.

And here is a link to Chuck Todd's almost-lost-to-history appearance on The Moment with Brian Koppelman making it perfectly clear he knows what business he's in.  Going into even greater detail about how it is definitely not his job to irritate his guests by letting his audience know when they're flatly lying or insane even when he knows for a fact that they are.  As I said back in 2015 when I was the only person writing about this interview (and h/t again to Alert Reader Walt for pointing me to it):..

[Todd] does go so far as to say (starting at around the 11:00 minute mark) that he understands that every week elected asshats come on his show and lie to his face.

And that our politics has become a game of pandering to the "idiots" and that that is why the public is cynical.

And that all core truths about the catastrophe our politics has become are perfectly well known to everyone in The Club, but are only ever whispered about off the record. Because, as Mr. Todd confesses (at around the 18:15 mark), he is a creature of The Business of Show. A clown, in the employ of corporate executives whose faces we will never see and whose names will never be mentioned, but who make it clear to Mr. Todd that his show is all about gettin' them ratings, and fuck the substance.

It is also kinda hilarious to hear the host of the most influential political show on teevee hoping (starting at around the 25:00 mark) that somehow, someday, maybe the Millennials with their Twitters and their Instagrams and suchlike will start demanding that politicians be on the record all the time, and then something something a big change might happen.

So what was Todd doing back on Meet the Press on Sunday?   He was there to do brand damage control.  Dispatched, presumably, from someone higher up the food chain than NBC News senior vice president of politics Carrie Budoff-Brown.

Because someone, somewhere fucked up badly, and that fuck up threatened to at least temporarily snap the audience out of its media somnambulism.  A minute ago they had seen caping for Donald Trump, groveling for his approval, and now here she was, a member of the NBC family?  Cloaked in the tattered remnants of Meet the Press' credibility?

What the Hell, man!?

Of course, other people -- terrible people -- have different and terrible opinions:

The professional Republican mercenary, Frank Luntz thinks

"Ronna McDaniel has an insider’s perspective we all would benefit from.  Instead of trying to silence her, we should be listening intently for all we can learn.  I listen to people I disagree with all the time.  It’s not an endorsement, it’s an opportunity to learn."

And  Greta Van Susteren, formerly of Fox, formerly of the failed MSNBC "Greta is Great" ad campaign", and who is now one of the walking media dead on NewsMax believes:

Chuck Todd does not have to agree with Ronna…but he should not disrespect that audience and only allow them to hear what HE wants them to hear; that is not journalism (that is Russia TV);the viewers are smart, they don’t need to have Chuck Todd screen what they hear.

So was hiring a Very Big Liar like Ronna McDaniel NBC's very big mistake?

Oh my goodness no.  Haven't you been paying attention?

NBC's very big mistake was simply bringing her to market too soon.   She was seriously underripe and needed to age in the oak barrel of occasional, brief, softball appearances before she was moved up to the bigs.

After all, former-RNC chair Michael Steele groveled just as hard for Rush Limbaugh's approval as McDaniel groveled for Trump's.  While he was running the Republican party, Steele told outrageous lies about the Democratic Party and the sitting Democratic president, including blaming the launching of the Afghanistan war on Barack Obama.  And Steele had no problem being hired to front for the racist Republican party.  By the end, he had humiliated himself so thoroughly that he stopped showing up to do his act on The Daily Show, thus launching the career of Puppet Michael Steele

But network executives used to understand that, if you want to get an audience to swallow something tainted and corrupt, you have to start by feeding it to them in small, sugar-coated bites.  First, they appear a few times as the sadder-but-wiser man or woman who, despite having spent their entire adult lives building the Republican monster machine, somehow never noticed and never really knew what was going on.  Who was shocked!shocked! when they only recently discovered what those Republicans were really up to!

Have 'em talk about the Party of Lincoln.  Have 'em pine for Reagan.  Have 'em quote William Buckley.   Then, after the primer has been applied, move them onto the paint shop for full rebranding.  Have 'em shake their fist and stomp their foot and be indignant.  Maybe have them write a breathless book about all the terrible things they only recently learned -- things Liberals have been writing about for decades -- then promote the hell out of that book until it hits the Time's best seller list.  Then bring them back on for longer segments as a "New York Times Best Selling Author".

Get 'em on Morning Joe and Nicole Wallace and the Today Show.  When they launch their own media company, adopt it as a virtual NBC subsidiary.  Pour tens of millions on free advertising in their enterprises...and then bring them back on for even longer segments as the founders or editors or publishers of these new things you helped them create.

And make sure, at every step along the way, they all remember to reinforce their overall Beltway media credibility by taking regular shots are The Extremes on Both Sides.  Sure, Trump is a monster, but what about campus speech codes?  Sure the Republican party is now a fascist shithole, but what about Liberals being so dismissive of their totally legitimate fears of some trans high school kid making the swim team?

The Alert Viewer could not have failed to notice that, seated across from Todd on panel on Sunday was unreconstructed Iraq War huckster, Stephen Hayes, who has written a long and thoroughly perverse attempt to perform CPR on the rotting corpse of the Both Sides Do It lie.

You see, both Biden and Trump are equally terrible choices.

We covered this a week ago on The Professional Left podcast, but in case you are unfamiliar, Hayes is one of the many Bush regime stooges in the media whose careers should have died once the debacle in Iraq could no longer be covered up and the Bush administration effectively collapsed.

In 2004, Gideon Rose, editor of Foreign Affairs, described Hayes as "most indefatigable proponent of the Iraq-Al Qaeda link outside the [George W. Bush] administration."   In 2008, Spencer Ackerman characterized Hayes as one of the most effective amplifiers of the Bush administration's Iraq War claims about an Iraq-Al Qaeda link.

He wrote an entire book on the subject.

But, as with all the other Conservative propagandists who suddenly found themselves very much on the wrong side of history…nothing happened.   All the Bush administration's most ardent flaks, and all of their mainstream media collaborators. just shrugged it off and moved on to the next thing.

And for Mr. Hayes, the next thing was the New York Post, Washington Times, Salon.com, National Review, and Reason. He has been a commentator on CNN, The McLaughlin Group, Fox News Channel, MSNBC, CNBC, and C-SPAN.

Hayes took over The Weekly Standard for a while, until the Trump team killed it.  Then he lingered far too long at Fox News for anyone with any sense of decency.  Then, since the wingnut welfare trough never goes dry and there is always funding available for these goofs to start their   next thing, he "along with Jonah Goldberg and Toby Stock, formed the conservative media company, The Dispatch."

And, just like Ronna McDaniel, Hayes was also hired by NBC as a "contributor across all our platforms".

So of course, now that he has been rehabilitated into a respectable Beltway stalwart, he’s has written  long, whining essay on Our Terrible Choices!!!

In Steele's case, the rebranding began in 2015.  From The Week, January 8, 2015

Michael Steele joins MSNBC: A 'sign of the apocalypse'?

The former chair of the Republican National Committee delights fans of his "sassy" style by signing on as an analyst at the left-leaning news network

He did the contributor thing for a few years, then began substitute hosting, and then, almost exactly nine years later:

From The Hollywood Reporter,  January 9, 2024

Behind MSNBC’s New Weekend Morning Show Revamp

Alicia Menendez, Symone Sanders-Townsend and Michael Steele talk to THR about their new morning program.

Small, sugar-coated bites of poison and the slow, steady erasure of the past is what got Steele from being a has-been punchline on The Daily Show to a full-time MSNBC employee and weekend co-host of his own show.

And that was NBC's mistake with McDaniel: rushing to get the audience to swallow a whole bottle of cyanide all at once.

Professional Left Podcast Episode #789:

"Donald Trump exists to normalize Bill Kristol. After Trump, cable news "debates" will be between Charlie Sykes/Rick Wilson/National Review on one side, Eric Bolling/Hugh Hewitt/Breitbart on the other, "moderated" by Joe Scarborough. Liberals will vanish altogether..”   -- Me, 2018

Networks Dressing for the Job They Want...

...not the job they have.

Understanding why "Liberal" MSNBC has gone into the Republican Reputation Rehab business full-time -- why it throws all it's corporate clout behind promoting Never Trump Republican media companies like The Bulwark and The Lincoln Project when it has never done any such thing for any Liberal blogger or podcaster -- is not difficult once you understand the business MSNBC wants to be in versus the business it is actually in.

Did you ever wonder why MSNBC hired Ann Coulter back when they launched in 1996?  Why they gave Tucker Carlson his own show back in 2002?  Or why, during the height of the Bush administration in 2003,  “Liberal” MSNBC hired Joe Scarborough?  Gave him his own show.  Then moved him to mornings.  Then lengthened his show to three hours?

It’s because, ever since Fox News began to take off, CNN and MSNBC have both been desperate to poach Fox News viewers.  Which is why Scarborough is at MSNBC.  And Nicole Wallace is at MSNBC.  It’s why they hired then fired Megyn Kelly.  And  hired then fired Greta Van Susteren.  And  hired then fired Hugh Hewitt.

It’s why they ran a whole ad campaign about how “People Might Start Accusing Us of Leaning Too Far Right!”

It’s why CNN hired Scarborough henchman Chris Licht to purge the network of anything that seemed vaguely lefty.

They don’t care about you and me, because there is no place else on the teevee dial for us to go.  Of course you could listen to the Professional Left podcast, which is now in its 13th year of continuous service.  But we're not on every day, and even if you listened to all [ahem] 730 episodes, you'd still probably want a little variety.

What CNN and MSNBC want is a slice of those Fox viewers, because Fox viewers are different.  They are incredibly loyal.  They watch Fox like they used to listen to Limbaugh – all day, playing in the background.  They are a money machine and a ratings bonanza.  And just like the rest of the mainstream media, MSNBC and CNN subscribe to the fantasy that floating around out there, somewhere, is some large number of disaffected Fox viewers looking for an alternative.

This fantasy is somewhat spoiled by the fact that when Fox viewers become disaffected it isn't because Fox has become too suffocatingly deranged for them, but because it's not suffocatingly deranged enough.  And, as has been thoroughly documented, when Fox is not nutso enough, those Fox viewers become NewsMax viewers.  From Steve Inskeep talking with David Folkenflik on NPR:

INSKEEP: So what's it been like over there? I know you have many sources. What's it like over there now that Tucker Carlson is out?

FOLKENFLIK: Well, you don't even have to talk to sources to notice the biggest fallout. You've seen ratings basically fall off a cliff this week for those who have been substituting for him. It was down, you know, significant chunk. It's down almost 50% in the days since his departure. And you've seen the rise concomitantly of this much smaller right-wing rival, Newsmax. They are playing up the idea that Fox has fired Tucker Carlson because it's gone lib. It's gone woke. It's gone Democrat. And in some ways, you've seen - you know, former Fox host Eric Bolling on Newsmax has seen his ratings go up almost fivefold. All of this is, in a way, weirdly ironic because that dynamic is what led to the panic at Fox News after the 2020 elections that led to Fox being sued for defamation.

Still, driven by the tall tales spun for them by their new Never Trump partners, CNN and MSNBC keep following their Never Trump water witchers and their derp derp dowsing rods deeper and deeper into the media desert on the promise that there must be some underground river of Fox viewers -- some fraction of a fraction of disaffected Republican voters -- who are open to a different kind of shameless pandering.

This also explains why MSNBC is absolutely stuffed with recently-former Republicans like Tim Miller, Charlie Sykes and Tom Nichols.  And why the network put its full weight behind boosting Never Trump media like The Bulwark and the Lincoln Project.  Because MSNBC wants to catch the drippings of any Fox viewers who might have gotten a little sick of Trump but definitely do not want to get any of that icky “Liberal” goo on them.  And who also definitely do not want to be reminded of the past.

To those imaginary future viewers, MSNBC says, not to worry, friend!    Here, we’ve never even heard of George Bush.  We swear, the closest we will ever come to reminding you of the last catastrophically failed Republican president you backed to the hilt is Nicole Wallace spitting out "Myformerbosswhateveryouthinkofhim" as a single word and then moving quickly on.  And that extremely well-documented, eight year, racist primal scream you had during the Obama administration?  Well that must have just been a bad dream!  Hardly worth mentioning.  Don't worry, friend. here you’ll just find wall-to-wall, Reagan-loving, non-partisan patriots such as yourself!"

So here’s the point:  Inside the television industry, the fact that Fox News has been a fascist propaganda machine for the last three decades is not a secret.

So why, during the depths of the Trump administration, with Fox News riding shotgun for Trump during his every act of overt fascism and treason, do we find MSNBC's Katy Tur was still insisting that there were all these good people at Fox doing the Lord's work.

Why, after 20 years of proving itself every day to be nothing but Right wing propaganda machine, it took Tucker Carlson rising to the defense of the January 6th coup attempt to finally convince life-long Conservative hacks to finally head for the exits at Fox (and directly into other prime media gigs) as they were headed out the door they were still defending the Brett Baier and "news side" of Fox and shining beacons of journalistic integrity.  And that, maybe, if the "fever" breaks, Fox could return to being the bastion of integrity it was during the pre-Trump years.

Y'know...

...the Good Old Days.

The reason for the pretense is that CNN and MSNBC business models rest on the fantasy that there exists some underground river of fed-up Fox viewers who could be had if the networks could figure out the right formula for creating a hospitable enough environment for them.  A formula based on flattering those imaginary future former-Fox viewers by telling them that, we know that Fox wasn't all bad.  And that you, dear, sweet, imaginary future former-Fox viewers, probably watched Fox for the "news" and not all that naughtbad stuff.

Which means this formula depends on erasing the past and putting Liberal voices in the corner.

The co-dependent Never Trump business model is that they and they alone can lead CNN and MSNBC to the promised land, but that the networks must be vewy, vewy quiet so as not to scare off these jumpy, imaginary future former-Fox viewers.   There must be no mention of anyone's past -- which works out great for everyone.  The Never Trumpers must be allowed to lean hard on the Both Sides Do It lie, because these jumpy, imaginary future former-Fox viewers will bolt if they get any hint that only Republicans are being blamed for Republican atrocities.  And the Never Trumper must be constantly praised and showered with money because obviously they have been the only ones brave enough to stand up to Trump,

Even if they only decided to stand up to Trump five minutes ago after promoting him, voting for him, uncritically supporting him, doing his filthy bidding while he was president, supporting his re-election and on and on and on.

And all of this makes the rest of the mainstream and political media happy because now that the Inconvenient Past is once again off-limits (except in the case of mouthy Liberal bloggers that no one pays attention to anyway) and the Both Sides Do It lie is back in fashion (except in the case of the aforementioned  irrelevant mouthy Liberal bloggers), the coast is now clear for them to return to garbage horse-race coverage, the Voice From Nowhere, and Both Siderism, all day, every day.

Like this:

If you'd like to hear more about this dynamic, and how far back the media rot goes (Spoiler: 1969) we just did a whole No Fair Remembering Stuff episode on it which you can find here.

Meanwhile...

At @MSNBC, You Must Follow The Money

It seems that every now and then Chuck "The Ref" Todd must subtly remind his fellow NBC employees (and us) that even though Andy Lack deliberately puts laughably ridiculous Conservative liars and hacks on the payroll, all of Andy Lack's other employees are obligated to pretend that they are not laughably ridiculous liars and hacks.

And since a journalist's most fundamental purpose is to speak truth to power and tell us what is really going on in our world, the net effect of Andy Lack's promiscuous hiring of wingnut cyborgs and a clear directive that they be treated with deference and esteem is that it completely undermines everyone else's credibility on every other issue.

Yesterday They Were Just Two German Clerks

 Today they're the "Honored Dead".

-- Rick Blaine, Casablanca

This morning on the Comcastrati Network, respected Conservative thinker and Wrongest Man in America, Bill Kristol, rhapsodized with respected Conservative broadcaster and Very Big Liar, Joe Scarborough, about the Good Old Days when the Breitbart's Mausoleum For The Chronically Unemployable (h/t Charlie Pierce) was a trusted and legitimate news outlet.

Y'know, before they were overrun with haters and morons like this shitbag:

From Politico:
Kristol wryly suggests new name for Breitbart News

By NICK GASS 08/17/16 08:15 AM EDT

"Right Wing Intolerant Mean-Spirited News" does not quite roll off the tongue like Breitbart News. But that's what Weekly Standard editor Bill Kristol would have the conservative organization, whose top executive temporarily stepped down Wednesday to lead Donald Trump's campaign, renamed.
During an appearance on MSNBC's "Morning Joe," Kristol lamented that the conservative news organization has become something other than what its late founder Andrew Breitbart intended.

"I knew Andrew well, and he was a troublemaker. But he was a good-hearted person who would not have—I mean, I hate the fact that that it’s called Breitbart News," Kristol remarked...

"It's unfortunate that we're all sitting around talking about Breitbart. It's a disservice to Andrew's memory," Kristol said, while remarking that the website, under Bannon, has been "pretty successful" from "a business point of view."

But, Kristol added, "someone should go look at all the things they've said."...
Here's the video (h/t Crooks & Liars):

I'm going to have to sit with this remark by Bill Kristol -- "someone should go look at all the things they've said" -- for a long time.

At least until my uncontrollable crazylaugh stops.

Because if the Dirty Liberal blogosphere could be said to have served one, overarching mission since the beginning of recorded blogger history, it has been to jump up and down, waving our arms, saying "Fuck!", and trying mightily and ineffectually to get members of the Beltway media to just please for fuck's sake "go look at all the things" -- the terrible, horrible, no-good, lying things -- their colleagues get away with saying every single fucking day.  (See also: Every damn thing I have ever written.)

Corollarily, if the entire Beltway media establishment could be said to obey one, all-encompassing commandment with Borg-like single-mindedness, it is to make absolutely god damn sure that no one within the Beltway media ever, ever, ever starts tugging on the "someone should go look at all the things they've said" thread.

Because the Beltway media is a confederacy of con men -- a sodality of hacks -- each dependent on all the others not to bring up the fact that this is all a puppet show being run for the profit of corporate interests at the expense of our democracy.  And if anyone with any real clout and access to a really substantial audience ever started to actually "look at all the things they've said" (See, "The Beltway Iron Rule of David Brooks") the unstoppable cataract of recriminations and mass firings that would soon follow -- starting with parasites like Bill Kristol and Joe Scarborough -- would wipe them all out.

Which is why there is safeguard after safeguard in place to make sure that never happens.

On the video you can see every single person on this panel working in frantic unison to separate themselves and their party and the Fake Tea Party the invented to get their off their party off the hook for the being hateful morons who spent eight years cheering for Bush...

...from "Trumpism", which they all swear on the lives of their children was invented out of whole cloth at the Breitbart website in 2010.

No Joe.  It's not "Trumpism".  It's good, old-fashioned, filthy, hateful, fact-averse "Republicanism" from crotch to crown.  And you damn well know it, because you and all of your depraved pals have damn well prospered by it for 20 years.
