Because there is no such thing as "the public".  There is the plurality who does their best to listen to facts an experts.   And then there's that huge chunk of the public which is either drunk on Fox News lies or desperately wants to blame "both sides".  

And taken together, the Fox News zombies and the Both Siderists are enough to capsize the country.
