Sarah Palin Walked So Donald Trump Could Run

I suppose you could consider this a teaser or a trailer for the No Fair Remembering Stuff podcast we just did on the subject of Sarah Palin.  She was the Republican's party's beta-test version of Donald Trump, and the thing is, pretty much all of your recently-former Republican Never Trump heroes knew exactly why she was so appealing to the base.

Long before Donald Trump, they knew that the center of gravity in their party had shifted from Buckley/Romney/Bush to Limbaugh/Hannity/Gingrich.

Bill Kristol said as much in an October 27, 2009 Washington Post column.

A good time to be a conservative

Bien-pensant conservative elites and establishment-friendly Republican big shots yearn for a more moderate, temperate and sophisticated Republican Party. It's not likely to happen. And probably just as well...

Obviously, many Republicans and conservatives -- and lots of moderates and independents -- will be grateful to Mitch McConnell if he can stop ObamaCare, and to Jon Kyl if he can induce the president to embrace a stronger foreign policy. But it's unlikely that the minority party in Congress will be the source of bold new conservative leadership over the next three years. Even if Republicans pick up the House in 2010, the party's big ideas and themes for the 2012 presidential race will probably not emanate from Capitol Hill.

The center of gravity, I suspect, will instead lie with individuals such as Palin and Huckabee and Gingrich, media personalities like Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh, and activists at town halls and tea parties. Some will lament this -- but over the past year, as those voices have dominated, conservatism has done pretty well in the body politic, and Republicans have narrowed the gap with Democrats in test ballots...

The lesson activists around the country will take from this is that a vigorous, even if somewhat irritated, conservative/populist message seems to be more effective in revitalizing the Republican Party than an attempt to accommodate the wishes of liberal media elites.

So the GOP is likely, for the foreseeable future, to be of a conservative mind and in a populist mood. In American politics, there are worse things to be.

They knew.

They fucking well knew which way things were going.

And they had no ethical qualms about the lies, the racism, the batshit conspiracies or the rising tide of insanity inside their own party.  As long as Conservative media and their fellow travelers in the mainstream media could diffuse, deflect and "Both Sides" them out of responsibility for what their party was doing, they were fine with all of it.  As long as they could focus the rage of the mob they had made on to you and me and the Kenyan Usurper -- as long as they could prod the monster they had made into pulling their political plow where they wanted it to go -- they were perfectly content to let things keep getting worse and worse.

Until the day when Donald Trump took their mob away from them by speaking directly to the mob in the mob's native language and promising to make good on all the promises that the Republican establishment had made to them to get their votes, and had reneged on over and over again.  Only then did all of these Never Trump Heroes pretend to suddenly  notice that something was terribly wrong with their Republican party.  Only then did they all suddenly become interested in democracy and fairness and facts.

But in the interim. even after Sarah Palin pulled back the mask and showed the world the leering, lunatic mob that was the foundation of their party, as soon as McCain and Palin crashed and burned in 2008, party and media elites grabbed hold of that mask with both hands and, with all their collective might, yanked it back into place.

Don't worry, Murrica!  You didn't see what you just saw!  You didn't hear what you just heard!  Everything is fine.  Just a little glitch.  Just a little turbulence.  But Sober, Sensible Professionals are on the job and everything will be smoothed out in a jiffy.

Every party in opposition goes a little crazy. For Republicans in the early Obama era, insanity took the form of the Sarah Palin spasm. Veteran politicos took the former Alaska governor seriously as a national figure. Republican primary voters nominated the likes of Todd Akin, Christine O’Donnell and Sharron Angle. Glenn Beck seemed important enough to hold a big rally at the Lincoln Memorial.

Fortunately, serious parties eventually pull back from the fever swamps. That’s what’s happening to the Republican Party.  It has re-established itself as the nation’s dominant governing party...

During the primary season, groups like the Chamber of Commerce chased away or defeated renegade conservatives and opened the way for the triumph of this sort of institutional conservative...

The new Republican establishment is different from the old one. It is more conservative. It’s shaped more by the ideas of The Wall Street Journal’s editorial page and the American Enterprise Institute than it is by the mores of the country club. But, at least judging by the postelection comments coming from all corners, it does believe in politics, in legislating, in compromise.

During the Palin spasm, Republicans seemed to detest the craft of governing. Hothouse flowers like Senator Ted Cruz preferred telegenic confrontation to compromise and legislation.

But current party leaders are talking about incremental progress, finding areas where they can get bipartisan support: on trade, corporate taxes, the XL oil pipeline, the medical devices tax, patent reform, maybe even tax reform generally.

Republicans are also talking about restoring the traditional practices of the House and Senate. Let individual members introduce bills. Let those bills work through the committee structure and get votes. Pass budgets on time and according to the rules.

If the party is to fully detoxify its image, something will have to pass next year. Midwestern Republican governors will have to develop a compelling governing model. And the volcanic effusions of the Palin era will have to look like 1970s neckties — inexplicable oddities from another age.

That was David Brooks, in a New York Times op-ed titled  "The Governing Party", from November 6, 2014.

For context, that David Brooks Remain Calm, All is Well! horseshit --

-- was written a full two and a half years after Thomas Mann and Norman Ornstein published their devastating analysis of the state of American politics and the Republican party.  Excerpted from Mann and Ornstein in the Washington Post, April 27, 2012:

Let’s just say it: The Republicans are the problem.

We have been studying Washington politics and Congress for more than 40 years, and never have we seen them this dysfunctional. In our past writings, we have criticized both parties when we believed it was warranted. Today, however, we have no choice but to acknowledge that the core of the problem lies with the Republican Party.

The GOP has become an insurgent outlier in American politics. It is ideologically extreme; scornful of compromise; unmoved by conventional understanding of facts, evidence and science; and dismissive of the legitimacy of its political opposition.

When one party moves this far from the mainstream, it makes it nearly impossible for the political system to deal constructively with the country’s challenges....

In the end, while the press can make certain political choices understandable, it is up to voters to decide. If they can punish ideological extremism at the polls and look skeptically upon candidates who profess to reject all dialogue and bargaining with opponents, then an insurgent outlier party will have some impetus to return to the center. Otherwise, our politics will get worse before it gets better.

For further context, David Brooks' Remain Calm, All is Well! horseshit was written just seven months before Donald Trump – the King of the Birthers – announced that he was running for president.

Because rather than making every effort to figure out what the hell had gone so drastically wrong inside the Republican party, all those Sober, Sensible Professionals who were gonna fix this little glitch spent all their time and energy making sure no such diagnostics were ever performed.  Because, as I've already mentioned, they fucking well knew what was going on and were instead singularly focused on making sure that no one else knew.

But of course, lots of other people knew what was happening because it was happening out in public all over the country.  In fact, you'd have to twist yourself into a pandimensional pretzel to deny seeing what was going on inside the rapidly unhinging Republican madhouse, which is exactly what Conservative media and the Beltway media did.  And what they are still doing today.

As to the people wo could see what was happening and wrote about it every day?  We were mocked and dismissed as crackpots and alarmists.  We made media pariahs.  And that, too, is still going on today.

In 2008, pundits called what had gone wrong with the Republican Party “Palinism”, just as they had called the same disease “Trumpism” after Palin,  “Delayism” before Palin, and “Gingrichism” before Tom DeLay.

But the truth is, the problem with the modern Republican party has always been that it’s full of Republicans.

The problem with the modern Republican party is “Republicanism”.

If you want more on the subject of Sarah Palin and the trajectory of the Republican party, we did an hour on the subject available for free over at The Professional Left website.

For the record, this was the 797th episode of The Professional Left podcast since we launched 14 years ago.  Which, you must admit, is a lot of ad-free content.

Dread and Circuses

UNITY

As the Fox News chickens come home to roost...and peck the fuck out of each other.

Apparently, when this clown...

... calls this clown...

Poison Apple

... a "clown",  it is noteworthy (from The Hill):

Glenn Beck: 'Grow up, Donald Trump'

Radio host Glenn Beck slammed GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump on Thursday, saying he is more concerned about the Iran nuclear deal than the businessman’s “third-grade politics.”

“I’m telling you, dealing with Donald Trump is like dealing with a third grader,” the conservative media personality said on his Thursday broadcast.

“And I’m not dealing with a third grader anymore because the world is on fire,” Beck said. “Enough of the third-grade politics. Grow up, Donald Trump.  Grow up.”
Beck’s remarks follow his appearance at the Stop the Iran Nuclear Deal rally in Washington, D.C. on Wednesday afternoon. Trump also spoke at the event, as did Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), another White House hopeful.
...

Beck also slammed former Gov. Sarah Palin (R-Alaska) for cozying up with Trump during Wednesday’s rally.

“I’m embarrassed I was once for Sarah Palin,” he said of the 2008 GOP vice presidential nominee.

“I don’t care what Sarah Palin says anymore,” Beck added after seeing her speak with Trump. “Sarah Palin has become a clown.”
...

But the idea of swinging the cameras and keyboards a little to the Left and talking to the people who have been right all along?

Never.  Gonna.  Happen.

It's a funny old world.

Well, at least I can get a few more miles out of some of my vintage graphics.

Bristol Palin Has One Big Wish

DixieHack

That every shitty, awful, sexist, lying Conservative douchebag from Ewick Ewickson to everyone at Fox News get off their high-horses and come together so that we can win this gosh darn election!

It is a shoutycrackers dessert so rich I could not finish it all in one sitting, but here are some nibbles...
It’s official. I used to use this blog to point out how liberals use the “outrage industry” to manipulate people and keep their power. Now Republicans are just as bad.
No.  There is nothing "official" here but the fact that Both Siderism really is the last refuge of every wingnut in America.
Erickson’s RedState once used a demeaning fake photo (wearing a revealing shirt with Santa Claus) of my Mom for an attack article on her.  Erickson refused to take it down even after he was made aware that it was photoshopped.
Would it be mean to point out that Liberals have been pointing out that Ewick Son of Ewick is a giant bag of ass for a very long time now?  Probably.
And we get the Fox moderators asking questions that the New York Times applauds? Please. Let’s don’t use the Democratic “war on women” talking points when we have ISIS to worry about.
So tasty.
Mark Levin said...
There is no good way to end that sentence unless it's "...he plans to weight himself down with remaindered copies of his crappy books and walk into the sea."
Oh and before we get off the topic of Fox News and the fact that they are “oh-so-shocked” at the supposed sexism of Donald Trump…  here’s a little perspective.Back in 2010, Chris Wallace joked about having my Mom sit on his lap during an interview.  In 2011, Roger Ailes said, “I hired Sarah Palin because she was hot and got ratings.”
Wow.  And mommy was cool with all of that until they fired her crazy ass?  Sounds kinda whorey to me.  I mean, I'm not saying you mom is a whore.  I'm just saying that she got dressed up in the costumes Ailes provided.  And said all the perverted, batshit things he wanted her to say.  For money.
Fox and Erickson need to get off their high horse on how outraged they are NOW about sexism and decency. Let’s focus on winning the election...
Great pep talk, coach!  Now let's get out there and win this one for...who again?

Fresh Gibberish from the Human Word-Salad Shooter

Poison Apple

The Scintilla from Wasilla has some Deep Thoughts on health care reform:
“The plan is to allow those things that had been proposed over many years to reform a health-care system in America that certainly does need more help so that there’s more competition, there’s less tort reform threat, there’s less trajectory of the cost increases, and those plans have been proposed over and over again. And what thwarts those plans? It’s the far left. It’s President Obama and his supporters who will not allow the Republicans to usher in free market, patient-centered, doctor-patient relationship links to reform health care. “
They can tort our trajectories, but they can never tort our Freedumbs!

While I Pondered, Weak and Weary

Man you shoulda seen them kicking Edgar Allan Poe.

Overall, my super-ooper-duper meta-opinion of the Reagan Debate was this: "Like I give a shit what these people think."

However, the pure moonshine being huffed the next day by those who have been cast out of Wingnut Paradise and now scamper alongside the cretinous Leviathan they helped create, kicking impotently at its ankles, is kind of hilarious.

A prime example (FrumForum):
...
Republican primary voters have in the past shown themselves very tolerant of candidates with less than perfect mastery of the facts. But those other candidates had something else going for them, even Sarah Palin. What did Perry have?

As the economic news gets worse, Republicans will realize: they are not merely choosing a nominee. They very well may be choosing the next president of the United States. What confidence can anybody have that Perry will come to work as president any better prepared than how he come to this debate or that he’ll show more insight and intelligence than he did in this first national outing ? Not much.
...

Witness the cask-strength wishful thinking of another weak, Ivory tower Conservative on the outs with his Movement because the monster he helped build finally turned on him.

For 30 years we on the Left have watched facts bounce off of the Republican Base voters ever-thickening yahoo carapace like spitballs off of a Rhino Runner, so let me ask Mr. Frum: Where exactly are this hidden reserves of rationality supposed to come from? From what previously invisible treasure cave will physicians suddenly emerge carrying the healing medicines that will break the wingnuts' fever and cure them of the fatal Limbaugh-Hannity Syndrome with which they are so gleefully afflicted?

And once this miracle does occur and the lame are made to walk, the halt are make to speak and the Teabagger is made to see reason, wouldn't the second or third batch of rodents they would put up against the wall for screwing them so badly be goofs like you, Mr. Frum?

Sorry, but no.

No such anti-stupid vaccine is on its way to save us (and if there were, damn betcha the Teabaggers would opt out, because [as we learned last night] the True Blue Conservative solution to Famine and Pestilence [and, presumably War] to the is to leave them for pure laissez faire Capitalism to sort out because, y'know, Freedom!) Instead, these Golem that the GOP constructed to win elections are performing exactly as designed, and as a confirmed Liberal who long ago gave up on trying to convince people to see reason who are actually proud of how fact-resistant they are, there is a certain, gallows humor in hearing the squeal of clowns like Frum as they are eaten alive by their bastard children.

...And Your Kids Will Be Placed

In the custody of Carl's Junior

File under: Shut it down. Shut it all down.

As they barnstorm the tiny, electorally-uninteresting state of Iowa, excoriating the Kenyan Usurper and his Commie Legions of Doom for daring to defile our Randite superhero flowers of American capitalism their sticky Evil Big Gummint fingers, I wonder if their Big Clown Caravan has slowed down long enough to notice that during Year Four of our Lost Decade, for lack of Evil Big Gummint Money, the Hawkeye State is shuttering 2/3rds of those little buildings that help Iowans prepare for and find jobs.

Jobs?

Maybe you've heard of them?

J-O-B-S?

Ringing any bells?

From WOI-TV:

Workforce Offices Close Throughout State

In order to still maintain the same services while operating on a budget of $6.5 million less than the previous years, the Iowa Workforce Development has been forced to close more than half of their field offices.

Thirty six of the 55 offices that provide unemployed Iowans with resources to help them find work will close by the end of October.

Thirty one will close Wednesday, including ten in our area.

"I think it is a bad idea because a lot of people use these places, a lot," said Lori Maciel of Des Moines.

With the looming budget shortfall, the Iowa Workforce Development decided to open up kiosks around the state in place of the satellite offices. They will be in libraries, community centers and other accessible places. They plan on opening 300 to 400 of them. Currently there are 138, like the one at creative visions in Des Moines.

"Our goal was to deliver the same services to Iowans in the state, hopefully closer to their homes in some cases," said Kerry Koonce of the Iowa Workforce Development.

But those who work in these centers say there's just one problem.

"The problem with that is if you don't have a staff person to help an individual who is not computer literate maneuver through it makes it difficult," said Ako Abdul Samad of Creative Visions.

Creative Visions does have a trained staff member to help, but most won't. There will be an 800 number to call for help or a live chat option.

But still job seekers are unsure if this is the best way to fix a very large budget problem.

"I wasn't raised on the computers I mean I know the basics but nothing like that," said Nancy Spiewak of Des Moines.

75 people that work in these satellite offices will be laid off when they close.
...

New Iowa workforce system motto: "Carl's Junior -- Fuck you, I'm eating!"

Our Lady of the Gibbery Mouth

has again obviously conflated two distinct things

to produce one cartoonish, fact-averse "reality" that she and her myrmidons will now fight to the death to defend.

Although whether this most recent bit of Imaginary History comes from Cuisinarting together a half-remembered elementary school memorization assignment with scraps of, say, the animated "Gulliver's Travels" teevee show...

...or just getting baked and watching "Batman" reruns during one of her many, brief college experiences

is something we will never know.

The one thing we can be sure of in this whole crazy, mixed-up whozeewhatsit
is that for Palinites who thought they found the answer on that magic carpet ride, those kicks

just keep gettin' harder to find.

Palin, Egg, Sausage and Palin

talk to the hand
Obsessive amateur Palinologist and World's Greatest Blogger, Andrew Sullivan, advanced his campaign to claw his way to the front of the "Can You Fucking Believe Sarah Palin?" parade by burying his site -- over the course of a few, short hours -- under a veritable mudslide of breathless, virtually-minute-by-minute Cootie Catcher Palin-bulletins gleaned from raking through the moose entrails of everyone else's obsessive Palin reportage and Noting! With!Alarm signs and portents that everyone else noticed long, long ago.

Of course, Mr. Sullivan isn't the only one -- just the most ridiculous. In fact, the whole Elite Media Universe has completely given in to their crack-laced-Fluffernutter American Idler addiction.

And it sounds a lot like this.

Tiny, irrelevant blogger: But I don't like Palin!

Andrew Sullivan: Silly, irrelevant blogger, don't cause a fuss. I'll have your Palin. I love it! I'm having Palin

Palin

Palin

Palin

Palin

Palin

Palin

debt limit

Palin

Palin

Palin and Palin!

Cable News: Palin Palin Palin Palin. Lovely Palin! Wonderful Palin!

Mainstream Media: Shut up!! Debt limits are off.

Andrew Sullivan: Well could I have Palin instead of debt limits?

Mainstream Media: You mean Palin Palin Palin Palin Palin Palin Palin ...

Cable News (singing elaborately): Palin Palin Palin Palin. Lovely Palin! Wonderful Palin! Palin Pa-a-a-a-a-lin Palin Pa-a-a-a-a-lin.
Lovely Palin!
Lovely Palin!
Lovely Palin!
Lovely Palin!

Lovely Palin! Palin Palin Palin Palin!...

Sigh.

It appears that no one in our Elite Media understands what grifters do.

So allow me to explain.

Grifters are one of society’s opportunistic human viruses, striking when and where they find weakness and a failed immune system.

Or in this case, a failed media.

Grifters are alley rats, perpetually scratching and scuffling around the dumpsters, looking for a way in. Once in, they feed for as long as the free eats hold out, then move on to the next likely target.

Sometimes the “dumpster” is some guy’s wallet.
Sometimes it’s a reality teevee show and a contract with Fox News.
And sometimes it’s a presidential campaign.

The primary focus of the grifter is always the same: create maximum confusion and bafflement and then, in the ensuing chaos, sop up the gravy with a biscuit as fast as they can before the false front they have created collapses and they have to scurry on to the next dumpster. It is for this reason that grifters cannot bear the slightest scrutiny, because whatever tricks or protective coloration they adopt are mere style-points in service of that goal.

Because in the end, opportunistic viruses really don’t have foreign policies.

And dumpster rats can’t do math.

Oz Never Did Give Nothing to the Tin Man

The Reboot of R.O.M.ney v2.012 (™ "R.O.M.ney, for a Beta Tomorrow!") continues.

From Salon, a glimpse of a Mormon-American cyborg struggling valiantly with the DIP switches on his Patriotism chip:
...
"I love the constitution", Mr Romney admitted, taking a stand. "I love the principle of federalism. I'm afraid that's being shredded today by many in Washington," he said, perhaps referring to those favouring a nationwide version of the sort of state-level health-care system Mr Romney championed in Massachusetts.

As this was primarily a speech about the economy, Mr Romney offered little to social conservatives, except for raw love of country, which he he shoveled on with zealous liberality. "I love America's greatness", Mr Romney confessed at one point. "America got it right", he said by way of comparing his country favourably to the allegedly sclerotic economies of Europe. "This is the greatest nation in the history of the Earth, and there is no reason the president of the United States should go around the world apologising for America", as if some president of the United States had been.
...

Given the known facts (plus what we can shrewdly guess about the impending Robot Apocalypse), the averagely clever science fiction aficionado can easily extrapolate what comes next.

After hours of careful practice and running dozens of simulations factoring in hundreds of relevant data points, the ROMney v2.012 team will pick the optimal time and place at which to Demonstrate Emotion.

At that time and place (probably around 4, July 2011) while talking about Murrica, the candidate's Voder/Vocoder unit will appear to break ever so slightly, and his eye modules will secrete a measured amount of lacrimal lubricating fluid.

The media will dine out on this for days, gorging themselves on it like starving jackals picnicking on an elephant carcass, cracking its ersatz-bones and sucking its simulated-marrow.

Relatives, colleagues and various other political aides-de-camp who have been lined up to be interviewed will recite their heartwarmingly-scripted stories of the "real" ROMney v2.012: the 'Umble, God-Fearin' Man behind the Great Hair. There will then come a gauzy interview with the candidate himself -- tie-less and within camera proximity of a fireplace or breakfast nook or family-sofa (possibly conducted by David Gregory, whose own poo-stained resume is perpetually in need of re-burnishing) -- where he will reluctantly reveal an additional micrometer or two of his e-motions, compelled (as his handlers will explain post-interview) to bare so much of his software soul because he just loves this country So. Damn. Much.

After which he will ask that the media move past this story ("Because it's not about me; its about what we can do together to save this country that I love so much that I want to take it out behind a middle school and get it pregnant" (h/t "30 Rock" for the second half of that joke) and back to the "issues".

As if that has ever actually happened.

The Scatomancers of our Elite Media will then take many, steaming jackal-dumps, and spend a few more news cycles pawing through their own stool in search of additional, profound gobbets of meaning.

Outside of our Elite Media, no one will be fooled by this in the slightest, but thanks to an expensive and well-coordinated campaign of saturation media bombardment coverage, ROMney v2.012 will register a slight bump in the polls, which our Elite Media will use as a Ouija Board to "prove" the validity of whatever fucking shiny "issue" object has caught their attention that week, thus circularly validating the Seriousness and Profound Wisdom of our Elite Media to itself and the multibillion dollar corporations who employ them.

Then Sarah Palin will re-capture the spotlight when she reveals for the first time that, in 1993, she secretly and single-handedly saved Burlington, Iowa by beating a Communist vampire to death with a copy of "Where's the Rest of Me? The Autobiography of Ronald Reagan"...

...and our Elite Media will return to their factory default settings.

No Questions Please

As everyone kinda, sorta knows, from the late "True/Slant" to "The New York Times" to "Crain's Chicago" to "The Des Moines Register" to this little sliver of digital real state...virtually every blog in creation has a comment section.

It is one of those constituent elements that makes a blog a blog.

And yet blogger Andrew Sullivan -- one of my fellow 2008 Weblog Award winners -- does not allow comments on his site, under any circumstance, for any reason.

Now of course any blogger is free to do with his/her site whatever the Hell he/she wants and this very, um, Tory approach to dealing with the problem of loud groundlings with dirty feet who may want to scribble mean things on Mr. Sullivan's drawing-room walls has certainly worked out well for him.

Mr. Sullivan explained this decision via one of his readers' emails here:
The site [HuffPo] handled all comment moderation on my posts - a task I find about as appealing as panning for fool's gold in an open sewer.
Which is why the Dish doesn't have a comments section.

And that may well be true, but offhand I can think of at least 40 other reasons why Mr. Sullivan would not want to open his site up to the unfiltered observations of others.

One of the constants (or obsessions, depending on your POV) at Mr. Sullivan's blog is a steadfast and often lonely vigil on matter of Trig Palin's matrilineage (specifically) and the strange lies of Sarah Palin (generally).

As a for-profit political/media enterprise, Palinism rests on a foundation of overt dishonesty and a highly mythologized past, which is constantly refreshed and extended by the hilariously dodgy assertions being made by its Queen Bee. This massive scam is abetted by a compliant press which is simply too cowardly to take up these matters, and Palin herself, who makes absolutely sure she never gets cornered in a venue where there is the slightest chance some goof will stand up and confront her over the many, many inconvenient truths that are always threatening to blow the Conservative consensual hallucination of Palinism to atoms.

So good for him, and my critique is simply this; what's good for the goose is great for the gander.

Or to put it a little more clearly...

Sullivan-style Conservatism rests on a foundation of overt dishonesty and a highly mythologized past, which is constantly refreshed and extended by the hilariously dodgy assertions being made by people like Mr. Sullivan.

This scam is abetted by a compliant press which is simply too cowardly to turn an honest and critical eye to the real record of Conservatism for the last 30 years, and its spokesmodels -- people like Mr. Sullivan and Davis Brooks -- who make absolutely sure they never get cornered in a venue where there is the slightest chance some goof will stand up and confront them over the many, many inconvenient truths that are always threatening to blow their own Conservative consensual hallucination apart.

Both Palin and Sullivan (and Brooks, and all the rest) rode to financial success and cultural prominence on the back of Fake Reagan and Fantasy Conservatism doing battle with Imaginary Liberals, and now neither Palin nor Sullivan (nor Brooks, nor all the rest) can afford to have people tugging at the bright, clear, awkward loose ends of the fictions on which they have built a living.

Or have I missed something?

Clueless in Gaza

DixieHack
The Return of the Dixie Hack.

I know that in our Brave New Murdochified World the Big Money Press is no longer permitted to mention anything about Conservatism's horrible, horrible past that might embarrass them or point out what awful, pig-ignorant hypocrites they are, but down here in the wee, small lands where the stiff-necked infidels still refuse to sing paeans to Saint David Broder (though Reagan be the wiser) we still get together under the throbbing supermoon to pass our heretical compare-and-contrast traditions down to the young 'uns (from today's Politico):

In India, Sarah Palin bashes President Obama

Moments after saying she wouldn't criticize Barack Obama abroad, Sarah Palin in India on Saturday said that if she were president there would have been "less dithering, more decisiveness" on Libya.

Pressed in a much tougher question-and-answer session than Palin has recently allowed herself to be subjected to during appearances in the U.S, the former Alaska governor told conference attendees at the India Today Conclave in New Delhi that Obama had not shown enough conviction in executing a strategy in Libya.

Asked how she would have handled the Libyan uprising had she been president, Palin told India Today Editor-in-Chief Aroon Purie: "I won’t criticize what [Obama's] foreign policy has been. But certainly there would have been more decisiveness."

Just as we did in the days of yore (from 2009):

Palin Hong Kong Speech Blames Government For Financial Crisis; Some Walk Out In Disgust

HONG KONG — Former U.S. vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin, criticized for her lack of foreign policy experience, emerged in Asia on Wednesday to share her views from "Main Street U.S.A." with a group of high-flying global investors.

In her first trip to the region, the former Alaska governor addressed an annual conference of investors in Hong Kong in what was billed as a wide-ranging talk about governance, economics and U.S. and Asian affairs.

Two US delegates left early, according to AFP, with one saying "it was awful, we couldn't stand it any longer." He declined to be identified.

"I'm going to call it like I see it and I will share with you candidly a view right from Main Street, Main Street U.S.A.," Palin told a room full of asset managers and other finance professionals, according to a video of part of the speech obtained by The Associated Press. "And how perhaps my view of Main Street ... how that affects you and your business."

Palin spoke out against government intervention in the economy. "We got into this mess because of government interference in the first place," Palin said, according to the Wall Street Journal. "We're not interested in government fixes, we're interested in freedom," she added.

She didn't refer to President Barack Obama by name, the Wall Street Journal reported, but said she called his campaign promises "nebulous, utopian sounding... Now 10 months later, though, a lot of Americans are asking: more government? Is that the change we want?"

Some attendees were disappointed by her focus on her home state and her attacks on President Obama.

"As fund managers we want to hear about the United States as a whole, not just about Alaska," one told AFP. "And she criticized Obama a lot but offered no solutions."

To which I can only reprise what I said way back in the day...
...as all of you who escaped our nation's 25-year-long Conservative prefrontal Limbaughtomy remember, six short eight short years ago when a singer blurted out a dozen unprepared words dissing George W. Bush at a concert in London (or, as wingnuts always ominously intone "On Foreign Soil!"), the Right absolutely lost its collective shit.

There were marches. Vigils. Coast-to-coast Hate Radio rants. A virtual embargo on playing the music of "The Dixie Chicks" anywhere in this Home of the Brave.
...

For myself, I couldn't care less if Bible Spice ran through the halls of the Kremlin warning the world that under Barack Obama, NASA is funding top-secret orbital abortion and gay-indoctrination camps (Because face it, it's only a matter of time.) She is merely the latest punch line in our long, tragic national joke that began thirty years ago with, "Didja hear the one about the Republican Party being turned over to crazy people?" and her carefully prepared remarks (Hello, Newt!) were obviously calibrated to lob another verbal "Pay!Attention! To!Me!" cinder block into traffic.

But while I might not care what the Wasilla Grifter has to say about anything, anywhere, every single fucking Conservative who pretended to be standing on righteous principle when they went full DEFCON 1 monkeyshit in 2003, and who now stays silent or cheers on Caribou Barbie needs to have their voter registration card confiscated and ceremonially burned atop a pyre of Tobie Keith records.

For starters.
A-yep.
