The Tale of Ichabod Scrubb’ takes the form of a unique folktale with music inspired by indie-folk artists such as The Oh Hellos and The Lumineers, with all instruments entirely performed by a talented tight-knit ensemble cast.
This immersive production is set to shine brightly in the Blood Moon Theatre as director Christie Koppe (Making it on Broadway panel, Sydney) setting the cast to engage with audiences through physical theatre and puppetry, while designer Brendan Hay (Man of La Mancha,Grey Gardens - Squabbalogic) weaves magic in creating mountains, windmills, junk-seeking barges, lake-monsters and many other impossibilities.
We enter a world where townsfolk raise the sun each morning, and in the evening transform their river into the night sky. One evening, sensible young boy Ichabod Scrubb discovers both his sister and the precious river have disappeared, setting out on a quest: terrified, but doing it anyway.
With previous full length musical ‘Stalker: The Musical’ making waves at New York International Fringe Festival (2015), and Chicago Musical Theatre Festival (2016), co-writer Alex Giles is excited for ‘The Tale of Ichabod Scrubb’ to launch in Sydney, pioneering Australian original independent musical theatre, and finding a home for it in a venue becoming renown for pushing boundaries: The Blood Moon Theatre.
Alex and co-writer Kaleigh Wilkie-Smith take the lead from their alternative US counterparts, using makeshift theatre, lo-fi conventions and impossible ideas to capture the imagination of the audience not by over-stimulating, but rather by allowing the freedom to join the moment.
The cast comprises Richard Woodhouse (The Drowsy Chaperone, Man of La Mancha -Squabbalogic), Stephanie Priest (The Original Grease, Kiss Me Kate -Squabbalogic), Doron Chester (The Original Grease -Squabbalogic), Emily Pollard & Annabelle Rosewarne and writer/creators Alex Giles & Kaleigh Wilkie-Smith.
