Description: Production by the Cologne Chamber Opera based on Hans Christian Andersen.
The Emperor of China owns everything. There is only one thing the Emperor of China does not own: the nightingale, whose beautiful song he has only just learned about. And so he sends his court to find the nightingale and bring it to him. When he finally hears her, he is enchanted and wants to keep her forever. But nightingales live in the forest and not in the palace, and that is why the nightingale falls silent in its golden cage. Only when the emperor receives a nightingale apparatus as a gift does he allow the bird to return to freedom. But the song of the artificial nightingale cannot permanently match that of the real one. And so the Emperor of China also has to realize that you can't own everything...
The story of the little bird, who enchants the Emperor of China with his beguiling song and who is even able to drive away death, is almost predestined for musical theater. Esther Hilsberg and Holger Potocki have turned the fascinating fairy tale into a lively, funny and beautiful opera that involves children in the action and enchants children and adults alike.
