Marlowe is a musical with a book by Leo Rost, lyrics by Rost and Jimmy Horowitz, and music by Horowitz. Despite a claim in the Playbill that "the story of this drama is essentially true and accurate," much of it is a fictionalized account of the life of Elizabethan playwright Christopher Marlowe.

While the plot refers to his rebellious anti-clerical views, the main focus is on Marlowe's romantic relationship with Emelia Bossano, a woman he supposedly lured away from William Shakespeare. Other historical figures who put in an appearance are Richard Burbage, Matthew Parker, Ingram Frizer, and Queen Elizabeth I.

In keeping with the general rock music tone of the score, neither the set nor costume designs (miniskirts, Day-Glo tights and silver lamé jumpsuits) suggested the show was a period piece, although the action is set in 1593.

The Broadway production was directed and choreographed by Don Price. After eight previews, it opened at the Rialto Theatre on October 12, 1981 and ran for 40 performances. The cast included Patrick Jude as Marlowe, Lisa Mordente as Emelia, John Henry Kurtz as Burbage, Raymond Serra as Parker, Robert Rosen (who later performed under the pseudonyms OZN and Robert Ozn) as Frizer, and Margaret Warncke as the Queen. Mordente was nominated for the Tony Award for Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical.

In his review in the New York Times, Frank Rich described Marlowe as "a wholly ridiculous show that is much more fun to sit through than many merely mediocre musicals . . . If Marlowe isn't quite a classic of its kind, that's a matter of size, not content. Tacky-looking and sparsely populated, this show lacks the Titaniclike splendor and expenditure of Broadway's all-time fabulous wrecks."

The song "Summer Night City" was dropped during previews in London.  The scene showed the preparation of the wedding and during the song, Ali, Lisa, Tanya, and Rosie arrived on the island. The song was sung just after the prologue.

Although this song was cut from the show, it still can be heard in the "Entr'Act" and in the underscore between the songs "The Winner Takes It All" and "Take a Chance On Me".

Un grupo de adolescentes de un pequeño pueblo se enfrenta a algunas de las grandes preguntas que marcan la adolescencia: el sexo, el suicidio, los misterios de la pubertad y la interminable serie de cuestionamientos que comienzan a aflorar

Despertar de Primavera cuenta la historia de cómo intentan encontrar las respuestas, mientras intentan continuar con sus vidas dentro del colegio, y dentro de un mundo extremadamente hostil ante todos aquellos que se atreven a poner a prueba sus valores.

Se trata de una obra que se explaya sobre la problemática adolescente, donde éstos se pueden ver reflejados sin duda en uno o más aspectos de la misma, a la vez que les otorga a los adultos una visión novedosa sobre ese mundo adolescente al que ellos también pertenecieron, y les ayuda a comprender (y recordar) las distintas situaciones que enfrentaron, y todo aquello que eso les producía.

El musical se encuentra basado en el texto original, ya que la historia transcurre a través de escenas puramente de texto, y rompe con las convenciones tradicionales de los musicales, dado que los personajes no se cantan entre sí las canciones, sino que las canciones representan monólogos internos del elenco, por lo que cada canción cuenta una historia en particular y un estado de animo. Esta novedad, llevó a que al momento de su estreno en Broadway gran parte de la prensa titulase sus críticas con títulos tales como “Broadway no volverá a ser lo mismo”.

Esta obra puede resultar inconveniente para menores de 14 años
