EVERGREEN (1934 OST) (RODGERS & HART)

EVERGREEN (1934 OST) (RODGERS & HART)

"Here's my own video rip (with some minor editing) of the soundtrack to the British musical "Evergreen" with London's biggest musical star of the era, sweet & petite & scandalous Jessie Matthews. Rodgers & Hart had written the show, then titled "Ever Green", in 1930 for the London stage where it became Matthews' biggest theatrical success. In 1934, it became the basis for the movie "Evergreen", with most of the principal cast repeating their roles.

The story is a bit bizarre. A mixture of Fedora and Metropolis and Footlight Parade.

Unfortunately, most of the Rodgers and Hart score was replaced by a number of songs by Harry M. Woods which complemented the few remaining Rodgers & Hart songs very nicely and also became instant hits. Only two very silly Edwardian / turn-of-the-century songs are annoying and hard to listen to. (I left them in, anyway.) Rodgers and Hart's biggest hit song was, of course, 'Dancing on the Ceiling'. It's a cute number, and Matthews, every bit the charming singer and dancer, is a joy to watch. As a matter of fact, Fred Astaire, fresh from his supporting cast success in "Flying Down to Rio", was asked to co-star with Matthews in this British movie, and was quite interested. They would have made a very good match on screen, in my opinion. But RKO insisted on continuing to exploit the combined talents of Mr. Astaire and a certain Ginger Rogers, and of course they, too, were far from being a bad match ...

A few years later, Matthews was offered to play opposite Astaire in RKO's "A Damsel in Distress", however this sadly didn't materialize either, and Astaire instead had to content himself with dancing with particularly stiff non-dancer Joan Fontaine."
