AdamH’s Skaven month five - Leader(s) Month!

OK, so I went kind of mad this month. I had a plan, knew what I wanted to paint and had it prepared. Then saw a model that had been sat on my painting pile for ages and decided to add that to the mix. Then I remembered an old conversion I made and sold and decided to remake that as well.

What I ended up with is a huge amount of characters/leaders that I couldn’t possibly play in a single game but that now give me a bunch of options so that is nice.

So I am going to start small and build from there; first up we have some assassins. Up until now I had just been using some Gutter Runners painted in a previous challenge as assassins however I wanted to have some of the newer models ready to use:

Next up we have some Warlock Engineers. I wanted to try and have one model to represent each of the wizard level available to them, plus the Arch Warlock himself, Ikit Claw! This also gives me a few equipment options like the Brass Orb and Warlock Pistol:

Next up is the conversion I mentioned at the start of this entry. So many years ago (15 I think?) I restarted the hobby and built a Skaven army, it was mostly the then-current plastics, I ended up selling this army along with all my Warhammer during one of those phases where I was questioning what I was spending my time on. Well there were a number of conversions in that army that I miss and this is one of them. Therefore I decided to try my best to re-create it and got pretty close! Here is a WiP shot:

Plus I made it so that the “Grey Seer” can be removed from the top and put on a standard base should I want to run him on foot. There are magnets under the base, in the top of the “Bell” tower, and under the seer:

I plan to use this as a Screaming Bell proxy (since a bell can technically be put in a unit of Plague Monks I wanted a thematically consistent one), or if I play later versions of Warhammer I suppose it could also be a Plague Claw catapult. Anyway here it is all finished:

Finally we have the big boi that has been sitting unpainted in my pile for years. I’m just going to show the pictures here, not much to say other than I have two Vermin Lords now apparently, so that’s cool:

Month five stats:

Models painted: 9?

Total points: 1,934 (lol)

Glowy rocks painted: Many

Next up is the final month! Yay! I have the Jezzails as well as a few other bits I have been working on throughout the challenge and will try and get everything finished together for a nice big finish. Good luck everyone!

ZeroTwentythree's June Skaven (327 pts)

June Skaven: Grey Seer (Leader Month)

This is the way the challenge ends
Not with a bang but a whimper.

I had planned more -- much more. For the whole challenge, not just this month. But this year has been difficult, culminating with June as the peak. Or the valley. Whichever is the appropriate analogy.

My humble offering for my leader entry is Grey Seer whasshisname. I had a name but I lost it.

June Points:

327 pts         Grey Seer

1405 pts       OWAC TOTAL

AdamH’s Skaven - May Leader – Cavalcade of chittering clergy chiming crazily (596 Points)

Finally something interesting!

Between a week-long business trip and almost a week long convention coming up, I had much less time this month than normal so had to plan carefully. It was always going to either be my leader month or the mulligan so as I started the month I pushed hard to get as much done as possible. What you see in this post is the result of me working at least two hours a night for about 15 days, might not look like much but I am a pretty slow painter!

I managed to get a Grey Seer on Screaming Bell and a Warlock Engineer on foot all painted up. Lets start with the Warlock Engineer:

Nothing too fancy here, keeping with the theme of the army I have used the same base colours, however this time going much heavier on the white highlights, trying to bring the whole brightness of the model up while retaining the dirty, soiled look to the fabrics. With the usual warpstone green elements the only new colours here are the red accents which I did to try and give the model a little something to stand out.

Next up is the second and only other model for this month, which is also the centrepiece to this army and it’s leader, the mighty Grey Seer and Screaming Bell!

Wood grain was painted in the same way as the Doomwheel from my previous Skaven entry, the gold of the bell is a new addition to this army though I think. Also the red from the Warlock comes back again to tie the models together as being similar in status within the force.

Lots more Warpstone elements scattered around which I think help break up the other colours being used and stop it being a mess of brown.

Generally I am pleased with how this model turned out. Painting it in sub assemblies certainly helped but as usual I am sad that a lot of work I put in is obscured or difficult to see. Anyway here are some additional shots so you can see all around:

So here is my submission for this month altogether:

My submission for May is as follows:

UNIT

EXTRAS

#

TOTAL

CHARACTERS

Grey Seer (340)

Screaming Bell (200)

1

540

Warlock Engineer (56)

1

56

TOTAL

596

So with this submission I have technically completed another OWAC challenge, and my second Skaven force. I am still going to push forward with my final month and try and get the last unit (Rat Ogres) completed but either way I can’t wait to get everything out I have painted this year and add it with my previous entry for some pictures, the Screaming Bell especially I think will look great when put in a big block of Stormvermin or Clanrats.

Best of luck to all the other challengers who are close to finishing the minimum requirements of this year’s OWAC!

AdamH’s OWAC V Intro Post – It’s time to get furry!

Is that deja vu I hear you say? No? Well I’m going to tell you anyway. Yes this is my second time doing Skaven for an OWAC. Anyone who remembers my first Skaven challenge army will remember that it was rather plain, mostly Clanrats, Slaves and Stormvermin. It made for a good core to my army but it is time I started looking into the various clans, so this time around I will be focusing mostly on…

Clan Moulder!

Obviously, I still need to add more core units to the force because as it grows in points I need more fodder (Slaves) and more weapon team production (Clan Rats), plus I want to bump the number of Stormvermin available to me just in case I want to put the bell in with them.

Oh, yea I’m also adding a Screaming Bell :)

But the main addition here is a large unit of Giant Rats, with the original 3rd edition chaos hounds mixed in for fun and a decent sized unit of Rat Ogres. Honestly, I would have liked to include a few more but they are shockingly hard to pick up for a reasonable price nowadays.

For this year’s challenge I am targeting the following list:

Warlock Champion (118)

Here are a few other pictures of the solid mass of metal that is currently stressing the weight limit of my shelf:

Next we have this year’s overlord offering. For those of you not part of the challenge there is normally a “squad challenge” during the down time between OWACs where challengers paint a small unit of something just for fun. This year I decided to get back into the swing of things by painting up some more ratties, specifically Censor Bearers:

At the same time I decided to paint an extra one for our gracious overlord, hopefully they please and serve him well:

Finally, those of you that followed my original Skaven entry back in OWAC III may remember me saying that I wasn’t able to finish the bases due to not being able to varnish them at the time. Well I decided to go back and varnish and finish the bases so I want to take this opportunity to show you an example of one of the stars of my previous challenge with the updated base, which will also give you a taste of what’s to come this year from me:

So there we go, many ratties coming from me this coming year. Numbers wise this is going to be my biggest challenge so far, however as so many of them are simple sculpts I am hopeful of my chances.

Thanks for stopping by and please make sure you check out the rest of the challengers this year, I’m sure we are going to have another belter!
