Jesse's Undead - Made it! (492 points)

Another month, another unit of skeletons and a liche for good measure. My monthly updates have become a little predictable.

This month I managed to paint:
19 skeleton warriors with standard, musician, light armour and shields (still waiting on the shields)
1 Grave Fiend (level 10 undead hero)
1 Doombinder (level 10 liche)

This lot added up to 492 points, a bit less than I had hoped to paint. Sickness meant that a mounted undead hero and a corpse cart remain untouched while a wraith and a screaming skull catapult need a few more sessions to be done.

This unit, along with the 10 skeletons painted last month will serve as a monster unit to escort the liche (or vampire) into battle.

Jesse's undead (460 points)

A lot of stuff remains unfinished on the painting table so it is just a small offering for May. One  Vrolka (Level 5 Vampire - 330pts) and his retinue of 10 skeleton warriors (130). I enjoyed painting the vampire (after a giving up a few times after some struggles with the hands of all things). The skeletons were fine the and rest of the unit will be quick as they are almost finished already.

The vampire looks like a mix of Noseferatu and Gargamel, which I quite like.

To finish where I want next month I have to sort the remaining 9 skeletons for this unit, paint another unit of 16 Nippon undead, one death rider, a corpse cart and something for the overlord. At this stage I feel that this is a little ambitious but it is worth a try.

Jesse's Undead (1335 points)

This month was all lockdown so I got stuck into some painting. I was a bit worried after the earlier mulligan so I thought I would try and catch up on the plan I had come up with when I started. I ended up completing all of the units I had planned for the whole challenge so I am going to have to add in some extra units for the last two months.

The new characters, units and war machine.
I had a good time painting most these guys. The beast head champion and the beast pelt musician from the grim reaper unit were really cool miniatures. I had a couple of failures, my first liche and a vampire ended up in the stripping jar, which caused me to rethink my character choices. I painted a necromancer to see what trying to paint non-undead skin was like and it turned out ok so that gave me a necromancer. Next I wanted to try painting yellow so that turned into an army standard and resulted in all of the characters having a yellow element to make them stand out. Finally, the warhammer 3rd editition beastiary describes liches as 'power crazed weirdos' so I looked through my miniature trays to find something that matched that description.

Liche WIP

This miniature looked like it would work but I decided that a bone mask might make him look more liche and less chaos sorcerer.

The final breakdown of characters, units and war machines was as follows:

Level 20 liche 345
Level 10 necromancer 85
Level 15 undead hero, army standard, light armour 137
Level 20 undead hero, heavy armour 108
Level 10 undead hero, heavy armour 58
17 nightmare legion, standard, musician, spear, shield, light armour 266
Level 15 undead hero, light armour, double handed weapon 89
14 grim reapers, standard, musician, light armour 224
Stone Thrower & screaming skull ammunition. 85

Necromancer, Liche and Army Standard

The Grim Reapers

Knightmare legion

Jesse's Undead - Wraiths (300 points)

After last months mulligan due to moving house I didn't want to risk missing the target so I went for two high cost models, two wraiths that clock in at a clean three hundred points.

I was interested in how to make the black robes look a little more 3D and it seemed to go all right. My biggest success was getting the wood on the scythe to look decent by accidentally using black ink on it.

I have started cleaning and basing next months unit and it is going to be a little more substantial - 15 Grim Reapers and an army standard. After that is is going to be interesting in terms of what to paint. My original plan would have been to paint my final unit, the Nightmare Legion, but I now have a few more options after some recent trading.

This is enough for two more units of skeletons and one unit of Samurai undead. As the Samurai are in various states of decomposition then I think I would just use them as skeleton warriors given that zombies are a liability in 3rd edition. At this point maybe Nightmare legion and then another twenty skeleton warriors would be the best path forwards.

Jesse's Undead (319 points)

My goal for the month was to paint a complete units to show myself that I could do this. I was pretty stoked as this is the first painting project that I have managed to finish despite many years playing with toy soldiers. My unit was a bunch of skeletons led by an undead hero:
  • 19 Skeleton Warriors with light armour including standard and musician (231 points)
  • Level 15 undead hero with light armour, hand weapon and flail (88 points)
This is the second row. All of the guys hiding behind the stars of the show. I was pretty happy with the overall look but I will make a few changes for the second unit, 15 Grim Reapers. I am going to start moving house this week so I am interested to see how that impacts on my painting progress for February. My original plan was to get a unit done each month for the first three months and then just paint wizards, heroes and war machines for the rest of the challenge.

Jesse's Undead Horde

This is my first year in the OWAC and my first time painting an army. I have painted a man o war fleet and a bloodbowl team before but that is the limit of my painting experience.

I had a number of possible projects (wood elves, chaos, empire or dwarfs) but undead seemed the easiest because you didn't have to paint skin tones.

My army is as follows:
Deathmage (level 15 liche & general)

Grave Fiend (level 10 undead hero) - Army Standard
Tombterror (level 15 undead hero)
23 Skeleton Warriors with standard, musician, light armour and shields

Tombterror (level 15 undead hero)
15 Grim Reapers with standard, musician, light armour and double handed weapons

Grave Fiend (level 10 undead hero)
Charnel Warrior (level 5 undead hero)
18 Skeleton Warriors with standard, musician, light armour, shields & spears

Stone Thrower with screaming skull ammunition

A couple of cheap magic items and this will be a 1500 point army!
