Mustafa’s Beakies: Wrap Up. Why paint one army when you can paint two?

Should’ve done this a few day ago, but better late than never I say!

It’s nice to have a finished RT looking space marine army, especially one that includes some tanks.

I had quite a lot of fun painting these. The sculpts are lovely BigMrTong ones (aside from the HQ and squad leaders), and were an absolute joy to paint. They lent themselves very well to drybrushing and washes as they have lots of interesting lines and details compared to the old RTB01 lads.

So, as the title suggests, I actually painted two armies at the same time. The second one is a small 1st company Ultramrine force. The squads are all three-man ones as I’ll be using the army for One Page Rules. I was tempted to do them in the same colour scheme, but I wanted to avoid boredom.

Anyway, here are some pics :)

What’s next for the Emperor’s finest? Well, I reckon they need some fast support so it’ll be jump packs and speeders next year!

Filippo's Ultramarine - Rejoice Brothers! The OWAC is finished! (1738 points)

It is done! It's finally done!
I wish my face could express better how happy I am, but I was in half suit and there were 35° when I took the photo

What can I say about this OWAC? That I wish I discovered it before.

It was hard, difficult, time-and-cash consuming, frustrating, filled me with anxiety for the deadlines and the fear of falling into the Field of Bones.

WHEN CAN WE DO IT AGAIN?!?

Here's the list of models and points

Unit                                 Points
Terminator Squad         315
Missile Launcher         59
ChainFist                         2
Tactical Squad                 300
Heavy Bolter              15
Flamer                         9
PowerFist                 10
Rhino                         50
Dreadnought                 115
PowerFist                 15
Assault Cannon         45
Blind Grenade                 5
Lexicanium                53
Psychic Hood                 25
Marneus Calgar         116
Gauntlets                 18
Chaplain Mighty  Hero 125
Terminator Armour         45
Predator                         90
Lascannon sponsors 45
Twin Lascannons         30
Chief Epistolary         196
Terminator Armour         45
Company Standard         55

I still have a lot of models around, many  discarded due to lack of time and replaced by the tanks. Failing to paint the speeder and the devastator squad was saddening but unavoidable.

I want to do at least something else before 2022 and the next project, but only time will tell..

I want to thanks my friends who helped me with both models and terrain, especially Davide Giurissini, who gifted me with that amazing bunker!

See you next year!

Filippo's Ultramarine - FREEEEMMMMM!!!! Predator (165 points)

Rank & File #4

I think it's time to blow this scene
Get everybody and their stuff together
OK, three, two, one let's jam

I'm definitely not happy. For June I had to search an alternative to avoid failing miserably, so I grabbed the Predator I was planning to do for a different project and quickly paint it.

I could blame the intense heat of these days which makes almost impossible painting, I could blame the work, family and other things I had to do, but in the end the blame is on me. I almost screw it up.

Almost!
(muahahahhahahahha I DID IT! I'M FINALLY FREEEEEEEeeee......)

Here's my Predator Annhilator (Freeeeeemmmmmm!!!!!!)

The bulky design is a little uglier compared to the Rogue Era's Predator, but still is one piece I always loved and dreamed to have.

It was hard to find reference to the original version with the Lascannon, and I was worried about the red cupola. I feared it could be too bright, but luckily it ended quite fine

Predator: 90 points
Lascannon sponsors: 45 points
Twin Lascannons: 30 points

I miss the devastator squad, surely it would have been a nice entry, but this will be enough to vaporize Andrea's pointy-ears when we'll finally play together next month :D

Filippo's Ultramarine - Boxes! (235 points)

Rank & File #3

"Ok brain, focus. What are we gonna do in May? I know we are both tired of power armours, so we need to switch to scouts and.."
"Boxes!"
"What are you talking about?"
"BOXES!"
"There are no boxes in 40k.."
"I WANT BOXES! MORE BOXES!"

This is an extract of what happened in my mind at the end of April.

The reason was an almost burnout caused by the night painting and probably a bottle of Diplomatico (that came in a nice cylindrical box, maybe that what the brain was talking about..)

I could not tolerate another power armour, but my list was full of infantry and the alternative was even worse.

I checked all the stuff I collect for the OWAC and decided that I should swap a squad of Devastators for a vehicle.

I had a brand new rhino still on its sprue that a friend sold me for a couple of beers, I asked our mighty Overlord for the authorization and voilà! May was done!

Box #1 - Tracked Box

A nice transport for my tactical squad! The only difference to the original are the decals, that came from a modern kit.

It's incredible how I hated this model back in the day, and how much I love it now. I'm so happy I could  build it with the original hand rails, a decoration that usually lasted a game or two, before disintegrating.

The only problem was.. I ended it in a couple of days, and called the work done in the first week of May.

It felt like cheating, something must be added, but what?

I take a look at the stuff on the shelves, and remembered that, when it was December and I was still thinking optimistically at my plans, I wanted to do two things for my wild card month.

The first one is a present from by my dear friend Davide Giurissini, a really talented guy from Trieste who loves creating buildings and terrains: an old school imperial bunker!

As Andrea Lucchetti told me "it's look like it came straight from a 90's White Dwarf article!"

Box #2 - Concrete box, front view

Box #2 - Concrete box, rear view

Box #2 - Concrete box, front view with friends

The second one is a Dreadnought, or "Sarcofagus" as was translated in the Italian version back in the third edition.

Box #3 - Angry walking box

Dreadnought are amazing!

"Ok, so your super soldier was badly injured in battle and could not fight anymore? Not a problem, just bury him in that 20 tons armoured coffin and let him fight for another thousand years!"

This model weights more than my entire plastic army of Salamanders for the current edition!!

The banner is printed and a couple of decals are different from the originals, but I'm quite happy with the result.

That's all for May, 235 points, considering the smoke launchers.

What will happen in June? We'll see.. now, where my bottle of rhum?

Filippo's Ultramarine HQs and Terminator Squad - (800-ish points)

Rank & File month #2

Yo-ho! All hands, hoist the colours high!

This month has been tough. Only 10 models, but what models! A lot of bright blue with some black spots.. and banners! Lots of (printed) banners, one of the most iconic equip of the old 40k.

Also some of my first experiment with freehands, and surpisingly not that bad..

Let's take a closer look

I love 'em!

First were the five man squad of Terminators with tons of weapons, ready to deep strike.

I love Terminators.

They are the main reason I dropped WHFB (well, other than the fact that there were noone else to play with) and switched to 40k are them.

Super-humans in super armours, small walking tanks. Sure, it was the first days of third edition so they sucked really bad, but, you know.. style before rules

After the Terminators we have Chaplains and Librarians.

Mindblown, litteraly

Never been a fan of pskykers. Between a bolt of psichich energy or a .75 caliber automatic self propelled missile launcher, I'll take the bolter every time (and execute the damned psyker!)

But they are a powerful choice, so here they are, both in power armour and Terminator armour.

Chaplains.. well what could be more awesome than a space marine? A very angry space marine clad in black armour with a skull helmet and wielding a power mace shaped like an eagle!

They too come in two flavours, guess which one I prefer?

Faith and ass-kicking

Last but not least, the biggest banner!

Is it big enough?

I think it's time for a group photo, it's really start to look like an army.

Come at me, May.. I do not fear you

Filippo's Ultramarine - Why hitting an heretic with a powerfist when you can use two? (134 points)

Leader Month

March is over, ladies and gentlemen, put your hands together for the one and only PapaSmurf Marneus Calgar, Chapter Master and Supreme Leader second in command of the Ultramarines Chapters

Look how cute this guys is! He's waving his hand to AAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHH!!!!
*bolter noise

One of the best models I ever painted. Even if this guy is 30 years old, he can stand proud next to many miniatures GW is releasing this day.

I missed February schedules, but in the end it was worth it. I had the chance to try a little more on its details. I'm proud of the yellow parts, a colour many hate (and for a good reason). It would have been much easier painting it in gold, but I still want to stay as close as possible to the original.

Goblin green base FTW!

To be honest, it's not completed. I discovered that he had a decal on his right leg, but I was not able to get it from a friend due to Covid restrictions. I'll add it (and all the other to the next models)

It took me an awful amount of hours to complete, I'm worried about April and the bad choice I've made for the next models.. and what's that engine noise?

Filippo's Tactical Squad (324 points)

January 1, 2021

A not-so-young-anymore guy starts painting his first marine for the OWAC, happy to be part of this great competintion and eager to shine in the eyes of the supreme Overlord. The task is quite simple: an ordinary Ultramarine Tactical Squad.

Paints are ready, minis are primed, a full month ahead. Nothing could possibly go wrong, he just need to avoid side projects...

January 31, 2021

A not-so-young-anymore guy is screaming at a bunch of models because the Nuln Oil is not drying fast enough, while he's watching in horror as a pile of miniatures of different side projects is slowly crashing on his desk..

Despite all my effort in screwing everything up right from the begininng, here is my entry for january!

I forgot how difficult was painting these marines, compared to the new ones (with all those sharp edges so easy to highlight..)

The banners are horrible. I wanted to print the images from the old codex, but the banner for the Sergent and Squad leader are not available in colours (something I could have noticed BEFORE the 30th) , so I had to print in b/w and paint them.

I can rest tonight, tomorrow is another brand new month. And I swear, no more distrac.. UHHH LOOK! Bretonnia for Warmaster!

Filippo's Ultramarines - Introduction

Hi all, My name is Filippo and I'll take Andrea's place this year as "The Italian Guy"

Thanks to him I started to look back at the Oldhammer community. He managed to convince me that buying the same stuff I sold many years ago for much more of their previous value and start a painting competition which will occupy most of my sleeping time was a good idea and my wife would appreciate me more for this.

He lied, but now it's too late.

I've been playing and collecting GW games since 1994, when I entered a GW store in England by mistake and killed all hopes my parents had for me in the future (and my savings).

I always wanted to paint Ultramarines in the same colour scheme GW used, but at that time my painting skills were close to a brain-damaged snow monkey, so the choice fell to the Black Templar, aka "spray it black and call the work done"

Many years have passed, the skills are still low but this time there are a lot of youtube tutorials, so it's time to give it a try!

The project is quite simple: an Ultramarine army painted as close as possible to the original paint scheme (yes, even the goblin green bases)

To be honest, my first choice was Salamandes ("FRIENDSHIP!") since they are already my main army for 40k, Epic Armageddon, Epic 30k, Horus Heresy AND Battlefleet Gothic, but:

  1. The original Salamanders paint scheme gives me seizures
  2. The idea of painting green again makes me want to punch a tree..
Let's start a Tactical Squad with Heavy Bolter and Flamer (324 points). Nothing to say here, the most basic of Marine's choice to test the paint scheme.

Shooting is good, shooting is fun! Here's the second unit: A devastator squad  (445 points) with an Heavy Bolter, Plasma Cannon, Missile Launcher and a Lascannon ("FREEEEEEEEEMMMM")

From the bottom to the top of the Space Marine's ranks, a unit of five Scouts (100 points) and five Terminators (610-ish points with teleport, damn they are expensive..)

(look at them! Terminators are adorable!)

After so much blue it's time to use also some other colours! Bring the whole team: 2 Chaplains, Captainwith power sword and plasma pistol, 2 Librarians, Apothecary, Techmarine and a Company Stendard

Wait.. that's 8 models.. Let's throw in a Land Speeder and make it 10 (413 points in total)

Say hello to PapaSmurf and his BigFists (134 points)

For the wildcard month I still don't know what to do: I have bought MUCH more than needed, plus I still have some old terrain to build. Only time will tell :)

Now, the offering: a Chaos Squat in Exo Armour painted as a part of an Iron Warrior warband
