MEGO Black Hole Sentries with Custom Blasters

I purchased some proper custom Sentry blaster guns for my Mego Black Hole Sentries. Hands are a little loose but they look great.

The "World's Greatest Toys! Digest" Magazine Journey - Part 2 - ARCO Spacewars

Continuing from yesterday's post: Issue 10 is the first issue I purchased that was newly published. It was fun to digest (pun intended) issues 1-9 all at once. I was intrigued by the picture on the cover of Issue 10 - the characters looked Star Wars, but also kind of Playmobil. The fantastic article about the ARCO Space Wars bootlegs was great. I had to see what was available out there immediately. I found a listing on ebay that contained most of the characters, and one carded "R2". Love these things. So much fun, but extremely fragile. I already broke one of "Chewbaccas" hands.

The "World's Greatest Toys! Digest" Magazine Journey - Part 1

As I was perusing Instagram a few months ago, I saw that one of the collectors I follow - BBeekman73 - had mentioned that a photo of his was being used on a Mego Toys magazine.  I thought that was cool. I always liked Mego toys but never collected them. I made my way over to Mego_Toy_Talk and found out he was selling his magazine on his Ebay store. I really liked the consistent cover photos and layout. I ordered a few to check them out. Loved them, then purchased the rest. As you know, I am a big fan of printed toy magazines. As someone who stares at a computer monitor all day, I like thumbing through pages and reading printed material. So here are the first 11 issues.

What I really like about the magazine, other than the awesome photography is the business related articles about the toy industry and the price guides. I always like to learn what goes on behind the scenes in a company that brings a product to market.

Part 2 will talk about a new collection I started from reading the magazine.
Part 3 will be a series of a collection I partially had and then decided to complete.

Here is Issue 9 that I first discovered from BBeekman73's Instagram account. The photo on the back cover was from his work. Lots of great articles about the early days of Star Wars merchandising.

Issue 10 just came out. More great articles about the early days of Star Wars merchandising, including bootlegs. But more on that tomorrow.

MEGO Planet of the Apes

I was never a big fan of the original Planet of the Apes, but every once in awhile, I really dig the story and design. Mego re-released some figures a few months back. Picked them up.

MEGO Navarone - 1982 Box

I already have a Marx Navarone set. I saw a fellow collector was looking for a specific Mego version from 1983 which had this awesome painted graphic on it. Very impressive artwork in my opinion. When I came across this one, I purchased it. It only had the mountain, no accessories, and the playmat. I notified the collector who said he already had one. No worries. I think I'm going to cut out the box front and frame it, paint the mountain for some custom diorama, and sell the playmat.
