Man on the Moon - A Daily Mail Special (1969)

Took myself on a little day trip to London today and stumbled across this down Brick Lane for a bargain £5.  And, given that we are very nearly the same age as each other, its actually in amazing condition!

This is a souvenirs magazine to celebrate the, as was then, impending moon landing.  I've only read a fraction of it so far but its fascinating to read about it before it had actually happened and also of note is the fact that it very nearly all paintings and drawing inside because obviously at this point there were no  photographs of the event.

Its also a bit of a double win for me because I'm a big fan of Neil Ardley from his children's futurology book series, World of Tomorrow.  If I haven't yet blogged the Out into Space edition  then I'll correct that as soon as is possible because that also has some very nice art inside

The Special AKA - What I Like Most About You Is Your Girlfriend

You know that feeling when you're certain you've seen something somewhere before but you just cant place it? Its like an itch.  I get a lot of them doing this blog, when a particular space helmet looks familiar and I just can't recall where else I know it from.  Sometimes it takes years and then some friend of this blog casually says; "I think its the same helmet that features in The Special AKA - What I Like Most About You Is Your Girlfriend."  And you want to face-palm, because you must only have watched that video a couple of dozen times, bought the album if featured on back in the day and from a band that was just about your local city's biggest musical export.  Thanks Richard, you are a salve and a star.

And what was the original helmets appearance you ask?  Well scroll down to find out.  There are a few cosmetic differences but its the ear grills that nail it.

That's right its the "looks like an alien but actually isn't suit" from Doppelganger AKA Journey to the Far Side of the Sun (1969)

Lovely.  What a find.

Now back to the Special AKA....

Man on the Moon - Daily Mirror special suppliment (1969)

Stumbled across this by default of researching one of its authors.  I don't have a specific named artist for the cover but Graphics and Design are attributed to John C Smith.  That's quite a nice wrap around cover

Doctor Who The Space Pirates (1969)

Almost forgot this one.
From a small clip of all that remains of episode 1 of this 6 part story starring Patrick Troughton as the 2nd Doctor
Here we see a couple of space pirates laying a space bomb on a space beacon, a sort of small space station along the space lanes

Moon Zero Two (1969)

I'm not sure if we've looked at this particular film too many times before or if I've ever really expressed how good I think it is.
What I know for sure is that I've never really discussed what James Olson and Ori Levy wear beneath their spacesuits.

One of the earliest appearances of a G-Suit being used to look all futuristic and space-age.  Nice to see all the colours of the different tubes adding to the techy'ness of it all.  It's all just a little bit see-through as well, so I can understand why future users of this suit like to get them painted up.  That said, and while neither Olson or Levy do it for me, it now strikes me that the makers of MZ2 missed a trick by not getting Catherine Schell to be seen wearing one of these.

More lovely images from a childhood favourite that still delights me to this day.
