Nixon and the Spaceman (1959)

1959 and Vice-President Nixon visits Tomorrowland to say; Hello Spaceman…..although he seems far more interested in the Spacelady at this point.  Still, 10 years on from here and President Nixon will be chatting to a very real spaceman by telephone.  From The Whitehouse to the Moon, one small step but one very expensive phone bill.

Tomorrowland, again

Some more snaps of the Tomorrowland Spaceman taken from the view-master reels.

These and the previous images are from the 50’s and 60’s only masquerading as the futuristic 80’s.  I hope I didn’t confuse any younger readers with my previous post. 1986 might seem like a long time ago but that wasn’t when the images were taken. We none of us ever looked this cool back then.
Now I’ve never had any desire to visit any of the Disney parks but I think I would have liked to have met  this chap and shaken him by the hand because he looks like he's The Man!

........And his Space chick seems kind of happenen too!

Tomorrowland.

Once the future looked like this...
Say; Hello Spaceman, as the mascot of Tomorrowland, a part of DisneyLand, California, welcomes you to the future of 1986

And this is what Walt had to say about it;

        "Tomorrow can be a wonderful age. Our scientists today are opening the doors of the Space age to achievements that will benefit our children and generations to  come. The Tomorrowland attractions have been designed to give you an opportunity to participate in adventures that are a living blueprint of our future."

As blueprints of the future go you have to hand it to old Walt for at least getting one thing spot on; Due to budget cuts not all of the planned attraction actually opened on time or even at all !
Still, you won’t find a more old fashioned, classic looking and lovable spaceman design than this... which goes some way towards excusing WD for the Mouse, the Duck, The Dog and whatever the hell Goofy is supposed to be.
