Quatermass (1979) - Part 2

This is Quatermass part 2 in as much as its the second spacesuit seen in the TV show but actually features in episode 3 of Quatermass IV, unless you are more familiar with the film edit which is known as Quatermass: The Conclusion.  Confused yet?  All you really need to know is it's very good.
These suits are on screen a little longer and seen much more clearly than the Russian Cosmonaut who dies in episode 1, as viewed through a TV monitor, and blogged previously.
Anyway, what we are looking at here is a "ventilation suits", as seen in various other films, shows and pop videos of the time.  This looks like its been lined and padded and has had a few extra details added such as silver cuffs and some forearm controls buttons.  It's an impressive job!

Quatermass (1979)

A few seconds from episode one; The destruction of Russian and American space crafts as viewed from the TV studio monitors. (i.e. the images are poor by default).  Highly recommend the TV show but don't go to it looking for spacemen because this is it.

The Quatermass Memoirs (1996)

Very nice cover art for the CD release of this BBC radio production from 1996.  The programme mixes the factual story with a dramatic narrative, in which the now-retired Professor Quatermass reluctantly recounts his past exploits to a female journalist. This in turn is interweaved with soundtrack footage from the Quatermass TV dramas.

Art by Chris Achilleos.  And again below in detail.

The Quatermass Xperiment (1955)

The Hammer Film version of the BBC TV series which is also known as The Creeping Unknown in the USA.

The plot is thus...

Three astronauts are launched into space aboard a rocket designed by Professor Quatermass, but the spacecraft returns to Earth with only one occupant, Victor Carroon (Richard Wordsworth). Something has infected him during the spaceflight, and he begins mutating into an alien organism which, if it spores, will engulf and destroy humanity. When the Carroon-creature escapes from custody, Quatermass and Scotland Yard's Inspector Lomax (Jack Warner), have just hours to track it down and prevent a catastrophe

But you probably knew all of that already

Quatermass II (1955)

The first of the TV sequels which was also remade as a movie by Hammer Films.  When they did that they didn't include this particular scene, preferring instead to keep Bernard Quatermass earthbound.

The Quatermass Experiment (1953)

There is so much one could write about Professor Bernard Quatermass, his various adventures, and their creator and author; the later, great Nigel Kneale.... but not here.  We shall limit ourselves instead to looking at the spacesuits.
These images are from the BBC's original series, first broadcast in 1953.  Three men went up into orbit and only one returns.
Creepy, intelligent stuff well worth a Hammer film remake as well as any number of sequels.
