Augustins

NO. 8
“ Augustins no. 8 is a blouse with a nostalgic
shape and feel. Knitted top-down on large nee-
dles with a straight body and puffy sleeves, the
design is simplistic in its construction. The aes-
thetics of the blouse is highly influenced by its
low-cut back as well as the ribbing and picot edg-
es of the collar and the sleeves.
The garment has a folded edge at the bottom of
the body and a finishing i-cord edge running
along the neckline. To highlight the waist and
sculpt the silhuet of the blouse, 2 braided ribbons
is added in each side.

Happy knitting. ”

that point onwards it’s knitted in the round. It has a folded bottom edge, whilst the collar and
parts of the sleeves are knitted in ribbing with a finishing picot edge. At each side of the waist,
a braided ribbon is attached.
Pattern
Before you begin
Please read the entire pattern before casting on.

Be sure to make a swatch before you begin, to ensure the right gauge.

Whilst the front and back piece is knitted back and forth, the edge stitches are knitted in the
following way: Purl the first stitch on each row and knit the last stitch on each row.

Increasing method, collar and sleeves: When increases are made to shape the collar and
sleeves, the method KFB is used.
KFB: Work to the place where the increase is to be made. Insert the right needle into the
stitch on the left needle. Knit the stitch without removing it from the needle. Bring the right
needle around to the back of the left needle. Knit into the back of the same stitch. Slip the 2
stitches off the needle. If you’re not familiar with the method, a helpful video guide, created
by Garnstudio, can be found at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z-E3YSHPQYs.

Increasing method, shoulders and sleeves: When increases are made to shape the shoulders
and sleeves, the methods below are used. Please note that increases are made both at the RS
and WS, when shaping the shoulders.
m1L, (RS): Knit to the place where the increase is to be made. Insert the left side needle from
front to back into the horizontal strand between the two stitches. Knit the stitch through the
back loop.
m1R (RS): Knit to the place where the increase is to be made. Insert the left side needle from
back to front into the horizontal strand between the two stitches. Knit the stitch through the
front loop.
m1L (WS): Purl to the place where the increase is to be made. Insert the left side nee-
dle from front to back into the horizontal strand between the two stitches. Purl the stitch
through the back loop.
m1R (WS): Purl to the place where the increase is to be made. Insert the left side nee-
dle from back to front into the horizontal strand between the two stitches. Purl the stitch
through the front loop.
Shoulders
With circular needles 10 mm, cast on 24 (24) 24 (24) 24 (24) sts and knit the 1 row in the
following way:
p 1 (edge st), place RM1 in the loop between sts, p 1, place RM2 in the loop between sts,
p 20 sts, place RM3 in the loop between sts, p 1, place RM4 in the loop between sts, k 1
(edge sts).

From this point onwards, the blouse is knitted in Stockinette Stitch - first back and forth,
then later in the round.
At the next row (RS), begin inc for shoulders - please note, that whilst creating the shoul-
ders, inc are made both at the RS and WS.
Repeat row 1 and 2 in a total of 4 (4) 5 (5) 6 (6) times:

Row 1 (RS): p 1 (edge st), k until RM1, m1R, move RM1 to right side needle, k 1, move
RM2 to right side needle, m1L, k until RM3, m1R, move RM3 to the ride side needle,
k 1, move RM4 to the right side needle, m1L, k until 1 st remains on row, k 1 (edge st).

Row 2 (WS): p 1 (edge st), p until RM1, m1L, move RM1 to right side needle, p 1, move
RM2 to right side needle, m1R, p until RM3, m1L, move RM3 to the ride side needle,
p 1, move RM4 to the right side needle, m1R, p until 1 st remains on row, k 1 (edge st).

There is now a total of 56 (56) 64 (64) 72 (72) sts on the needle.

Yoke
On the next row, begin to inc for sleeves - please note, that the inc are made at every RS
row. Repeat row 1 and 2 in a total of 12 (13) 14 (15) 16 (17) times:

Row 1 (RS): p 1 (edge st), k until RM1, move RM1 to the right side needle, m1L, k until
RM2, m1R, move RM2 to the right side needle, k until RM3, move RM3 to right side
needle, m1L, k until RM4, m1R, move RM4 to the right side needle, k until 1 st remains
on row, k 1 (edge st).

Row 2 (WS): p 1 (edge st), p until 1 st remains on row, k 1 (edge st).

On the next row, cast on sts for the low-cut back.

Knit the row (RS) in the following way:
p 1 (edge st), k until RM1, move RM1 to the right side needle, m1L, k until RM2, m1R,
move RM2 to the right side needle, k until RM3, move RM3 to right side needle, m1L, k
until RM4, m1R, move RM4 to the right side needle, k until 1 st remains on row, k 1, cast
on 20 sts in continuation of the last knitted st without breaking the yarn.

Place a M in the strand between the first and the last st on the needle = BOR.
From this point onwards, the blouse is knitted in the round in Stockinette Stitch.

Knit 1 rnd.
On the next rnd, continue to inc for sleeves.
Repeat rnd 1 and 2 in a total of 3 (3) 3 (3) 3 (3) times:

Rnd 1: k until RM1, move RM1 to the right side needle, m1L, k until RM2, m1R, move
RM2 to the right side needle, k until RM3, move RM3 to right side needle, m1L, k until
RM4, m1R, move RM4 to the right side needle, k remaining sts.

Rnd 2: k all sts.

The inc for the sleeves have now been made.

There are now 33 (35) 37 (39) 41 (43) sts for each sleeve and a total of 140 (144) 156 (160)
172 (176) sts on the needle. On the next rnd, begin to inc for body - please note, that inc
are made on each rnd. Repeat rnd 1 in a total of 5 (6) 5 (6) 5 (6) times:

Rnd 1: k until RM1, m1R, move RM1 to right side needle, k until RM2, move RM2 to
right side needle, m1L, k until RM3, m1R, move RM3 to the ride side needle, k until
RM4, move RM4 to the right side needle, m1L, k remaining sts.

There are now a total of 160 (168) 176 (184) 192 (200) sts on the needle.
On the next rnd, divide the work for body and sleeves:
k until RM1, place the next 33 (35) 37 (39) 41 (43) on a stitch holder (1st sleeve), cast on
5 sts, k until RM3, place the next 33 (35) 37 (39) 41 (43) on a stitch holder (2nd sleeve),
cast on 5 sts, k the remaining sts.

Body
There are now a total of 104 (108) 112 (116) 120 (124) sts on the needle.
Continue to knit in the round in Stockinette Stitch until the blouse is 46 (48) 50 (52) 54
(56) cm (or preferred length), measured CF, from the neckline and down.
On the next rnd, switch to circular needles 8 mm and continue in Stockinette Stitch for
additional 8 cm. Place a M after 4 cm - the M indicates the row where the body must be
bended to create the finishing folded edge. Bind off and break yarn.

Neckline
An i-cord edge must now be knitted onto the low-cut neckline.
This is done in the following way:
With circular needle 8 mm and starting CB from the RS, pick up 104 (108) 116 (120) 128
(132) sts evenly along the neckline edge. CB is placed between the 10th and 11th cast on
st at the back. Break yarn.
From the RS, cast on 4 sts onto the right side needle and p 1 row.
The 4 sts are now at the left side needle and are placed in continuation of the previously
established neckline sts.
Continue by knitting the i-cord in the following way:
*k 3, k2tog tbl (1 st from the i-cord + 1 st from the neckline), slip the 4 sts back onto
the left side needle*. Repeat from * to * until all sts from the neckline have been knitted.
Bind off, break the yarn and sew the ends of the i-cord discretely together from the WS.

Collar
Now, sts for the collar, which runs along the i-cord neckline, must be picked up.
With circular needles 8 mm and starting CB from the RS, pick up 104 (108) 116 (120)
128 (132) sts evenly, following the first row just below the i-cord edge.
Place a M in the loop between the first and last picked up st = BOR and CB.
Knit the first rnd in the following way:
*KFB* throughout the rnd.

There are now a total of 208 (216) 232 (240) 256 (264) sts on the needle.

Knit the next 19 rnds in the following way:

Row 1-10: *k 1, p 1* throughout the rnd.
Row 11-14: k throughout the rnd.
Row 15: *yo, k2tog* throughout the rnd.
(Place M = this is the rnd where the picot edge later must be folded from).
Row 16-19: k throughout the rnd. Bind off and break yarn.

Sleeves
Place the 33 (35) 37 (39) 41 (43) sleeve sts on circular needles 10 mm and pick up 5 (5) 5
(5) 5 (5) sts from the underarm cast on, starting at the center of the cast on row.
There are now a total of 38 (40) 42 (44) 46 (48) sts on the needle.
Place a M in the loop between the first and last st = BOR.
Knit in the rnd in Stockinette Stitch, until the sleeve is 30 (30) 31 (31) 32 (32) cm
(or preferred length), measured from the underarm cast on row and down.

Change to circular needles 8 mm and knit the next rnd in the following way:
*k2tog* throughout the rnd.
There are now a total of 19 (20) 21 (22) 23 (24) sts on the needle.
Place a M within this rnd and don’t remove it - it marks where a thin elastic later must be
inserted to make the sleeve slightly puffy.

Knit the next rnd in the following way:

*KFB* throughout the rnd.
There are now a total of 38 (40) 42 (44) 46 (48) sts on the needle.

Repeat instructions for the second sleeve.

Braided ribbons
With a double strand of each yarn type (= 4 strands of Silk Mohair + 2 strands of New
Zealand Lambswool), braid 2 ribbons, each measuring 160 (160) 180 (180) 200 (200) cm.
Place each ribbon at the height that corresponds to the narrowest point at your waist.
Sew each ribbon to each side of the blouse, centered under the sleeve.

Finishing
Weave in ends.
Fold in the bind off rows of the body and sleeves to the WS by their marked rows and sew
it discretely to the WS. Remove M.
From the WS of the wrist, pull a thin elastic thread through the marked rnd and fasten,
to make the sleeve slightly puffy.
Rinse the blouse by hand in luke warm water with a bit of wool soap, then let it dry laying
flat.
