A man has driven his car into pedestrians in the northern Italian city of Modena, injuring eight people, four seriously, officials say.

They include a woman who reportedly had both her legs crushed.

After the car came to a halt against a shop window, the driver emerged holding a knife and injured a passer-by who gave chase, before the suspect was overpowered.

The suspect, 31, has been identified by officials as an Italian national of Moroccan origin. Italy's Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni described the incident as "extremely serious".

The incident occurred around 16:30 (14:30 GMT), when the speeding car hit the pedestrians in Via Emilia next to the iconic cathedral of Modena, south-east of Milan. The vehicle then veered left before coming to a halt against a shop window.

"We saw the car approaching, it was heading for the curb," an eyewitness said.

"It suddenly accelerated - it was going at least 100km/h (62mph)."

A university student died after being repeatedly stabbed by a man armed with a Sikh ceremonial sword, a court heard.

Finance student Henry Nowak, 18, was on his way home from a night out when he was allegedly attacked by stranger Vikrum Digwa, 23, with the eight inch 'Shastar' blade.

Digwa was caught on camera saying 'I am a bad man' before the fatal attack, jurors were told.

He is now on trial accused of murder alongside his mother Kiran Kaur, 53, who is accused of assisting an offender.

Prosecutors said she went to the scene before running home with the knife to stash it among an 'arsenal of weapons' there. They both deny the charges.

Southampton Crown Court heard Mr Nowak was in his first term studying accountancy and finance at Southampton University when he went for a night out in the city on December 3, 2023 with friends from his football team.

The teenager went home at around 11pm and having 'drunk less than the legal limit to drive'.

The Justice Department on Thursday accused Yale University of illegally considering race in admissions to its medical school — the second institution to face discrimination allegations by the federal agency this month.

In a letter to a lawyer for Yale, Harmeet Dhillon, assistant attorney general for civil rights, said a DOJ investigation found that Black and Hispanic students have a much higher chance of admission to the medical school than white or Asian students, despite having lower grade-point averages and lower test scores.

“Yale has continued its race-based admissions program despite the Supreme Court and the public’s clear mandate for reform,” Dhillon said in a statement. “This Department will continue to shed light on these illegal practices, and demand that institutions of higher education comply with federal law.”

Washington, DC, May 13, 2026 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Today, Keep America Beautiful (KAB) released its new 2026 National Litter Study, revealing that litter across America’s roadways and waterways has declined 34% since 2020, with every American’s share of litter along roadways and waterways falling from 152 pieces to 96. While this progress is real and measurable, 35 billion pieces of litter remain, some types are increasing and litter is still an everyday reality for most Americans. The landmark study provides both a progress report and a roadmap for where urgent action is still needed as the country approaches its 250th birthday.

The study, which updates the groundbreaking Keep America Beautiful 2020 National Litter Study, is the most extensive research conducted in U.S. history to estimate the scope, scale, causes and impacts of litter. House Republicans passed a bill on Wednesday that would allow nationwide year-round sales of E15, a blend of gasoline mixed with 15 percent ethanol, also known as Unleaded 88—a product that refiners and retailers normally cannot sell in around half the country during the summer months due to air pollution concerns.

The Nationwide Consumer and Fuel Retailer Choice Act, H.R. 1346, passed the House by a 218-203 vote, but still faces an uncertain future in the Senate where it would need 60 votes to clear a filibuster and be sent to President Donald Trump’s desk.

Lawmakers hope the measure could offer relief to drivers at the pumps ahead of the busy summer season, when fuel demand regularly increases. National average gas prices have soared above $4.50 per gallon since the start of the Iran war.

As of Thursday, the national average gas price was $4.53 per gallon, up by roughly $1.50 since late February, when gas prices in the country were just below the $3 mark, according to data from the American Automobile Association (AAA).

Pushing for Ethanol Use

In March, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) had issued a temporary waiver to allow the sale of E15 from May 1 to May 20. At the same time, the agency also announced the removal of all federal impediments to sales of E10—a gasoline blend mixed with 10 percent ethanol—across the country.

HONG KONG (AP) — China on Thursday stepped up its tough stance on Taiwan, an island democracy it deems its territory, warning the United States that Beijing and Washington will “have clashes and even conflicts” if the issue is not handled properly.

China’s President Xi Jinping stressed during his summit with U.S. President Donald Trump that the “ Taiwan question ” is the most important issue in ties between Beijing and Washington, according to a readout from the Chinese foreign ministry.

“‘Taiwan independence’ and cross-Strait peace are as irreconcilable as fire and water,” Xi told Trump, according to the statement.

Xi’s stern tone reflected China’s growing pressure on the U.S., Taiwan’s largest unofficial ally. The U.S. is required by law to ensure Taiwan can defend itself but officially maintains a position of what has been called strategic ambiguity — leaving the question of whether it would get involved militarily if China decided to reclaim Taiwan by force.

“If it is handled properly, the bilateral relationship will enjoy overall stability. Otherwise, the two countries will have clashes and even conflicts, putting the entire relationship in great jeopardy,” Xi said, according to the ministry.

Beijing has already ramped up a campaign over the past few years to lure away Taiwan’s diplomatic allies and increase military pressure on the island.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Thursday that U.S. policy toward Taiwan was “unchanged” but warned that it would be “a terrible mistake” for China to take Taiwan by force.

A California mayor admitted to acting as an illegal foreign agent of China, resigning from her position in a shocking federal plea deal unsealed on Monday.

Democrat Eileen Wang agreed with prosecutors that she worked with the People’s Republic of China to boost propaganda with a fake news website on US soil between 2020 and 2022. She was elected to the city council in Arcadia — a city in the San Gabriel Valley within LA County — in November 2022.

Wang, 58, worked with her then-fiancé, Yaoning “Mike” Sun, on a website called “U.S. News Center,” which claimed to be a news source for Chinese Americans, according to court documents.

But in reality, the pair were carrying out Beijing’s orders through the site.

Wang and Sun “executed directives” from the Chinese government, posting propaganda designed to boost China, all while reporting back to their masters with screenshots showing how many people viewed the stories, according to the plea agreement.

The producer price index rose a seasonally adjusted 1.4% for the month, much higher than the 0.5% Dow Jones consensus forecast and the upwardly revised 0.7% March increase.

Energy was at the root of the unexpectedly high gain in producer prices, though there was evidence that the price pain is extending beyond the gas pump.

The services index accelerated 1.2%, the biggest gain since March 2022. Two-thirds of the move was attributed to a 2.7% gain in trade services, a sign that tariff costs could be starting to have a larger impact on prices.

WASHINGTON — Top Republicans aren’t eager to discuss the prospect of President Donald Trump ordering his own administration to pay him as much as $10 billion in a legal settlement.

Trump sued the Internal Revenue Service in January, after he’d been back in office a year, over the unlawful release of his tax returns by a government contractor during his first term. The New York Times reported this week that Trump’s attorneys are in settlement talks with the Justice Department, aiming to reach an agreement before a judge has a chance to throw the case out.

Though Trump sued for $10 billion — a sum that would double his net worth, which has already grown by leaps and bounds during his presidency because of his family’s cryptocurrency investments — it seems unlikely he will ultimately receive such a large payout.

On Wednesday, Republicans largely tried to dodge questions about the case, which presents a clear conflict of interest for a president who has claimed unprecedented amounts of direct authority over government agencies, including the IRS and the Justice Department. The GOP is already facing political headaches over a different aspect of Trump’s self-aggrandizement, with many Republicans balking at spending $1 billion on his ballroom project.

“One of the things that is not in my purview is the Department of Justice and how they evaluate cases,” House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) said Wednesday in response to a question from HuffPost. “I haven’t thought about that or read into it. I got enough to say grace over every day. Go ask the executive branch about it.”

The White House did not respond to a request for comment on Wednesday. The Justice Department said it doesn’t comment on pending litigation.
