I own a EOS 5, 5D and now the R5 just continues the line. also idk what the fuck is the deal with DR, i've looked at the numbers its like 0.2 stops worse than the R5, still nearly 3 stops better than a 5D and shooting at anything other than 100 ISO is retarded.

Spring editionAll video related questions and discussion is intended for this thread. Here we discuss techniques, gear and anything else related to capturing video footage. Please don't pretend to be an expert if you don't know what you're talking about. Kindly leave your ego at the door.Posting short films/scripts or other work you've done is encouraged. We tend to use and recommend DSLRs/mirrorless cameras because they provide phenomenal picture quality for their price, have large sensors (ie the same size used in high-end cinema cameras, and larger) and have interchangeable lenses. In contrast, consumer camcorders often have much smaller sensors and a fixed lens.>STICKY - https://text.is/QZ1J>Helpful guide, additional books and more in-depth FAQs - https://web.archive.org/web/20200926115310/https://pastebin.com/kG0gRmTZ>NO ONE CARES WHAT AN EXPERT YOU THINK YOU ARE. >>4509328see >>4502689A month and a half ago it was pointed out that memory prices were exploding and not enough attention was being given to it.Who exactly were you listening to that was saying prices were going down? Are you sure you're not the idiot for only hearing what you wanted to hear?
>>4509328Who said that? I haven't seen that said anywhere. Prices might drop slightly in 6-12 months if we're lucky but the drop won't be very much. What fucked it all the most was Micron fucking over consumers by abruptly pulling out of the consumer market to only provide to AI companies alone. Even HDD prices are absolutely ruined now. I had a 8TB on my buy list for a while and it's more than doubled in just the last two months but was stable for almost an entire year prior, so they must be buying up HDDs now too.
>>4509525>Even HDD prices are absolutely ruinedI wouldn’t say ruined, I’m still seeing good prices for fuckhuge HDDs.That’s my only plan- offload and backup all my SSD drives to HDD, then reuse all the SSDs I have up to this point
>New York Film Festival rejected There Will Be Blood (it would've been its premiere)Jesus fucking christ. Talk about screwing the pooch. This was almost 20 years ago too, so there isn't even the excuse of an oversaturated market making it hard to curate films. Back then, just making a feature that was watchable was enough to get most festivals interested. In some ways it's kind of comforting to know that even one of the greatest films of the 21st century didn't get unanimous invitations. But what kind of fucking mouth-breather watched that and thought "yeah, nah, not good enough"?I'd fucking love to see the accepted films from that year
Anyone here ever play around with doing video from stills? I don't mean like timelapses or slideshows, but on cameras that can do like 24-30fps bursts, and then using those still frames as the video
I think it's neat. Finally not a re-release of something or gimped to make room for something new.

>>4509766An RX100 III-V has a lens with similar range and aperture, but it also has IBIS which more than makes up for the difference in sensor performance. The difference is the Sony can slip into a trouser pocket. I suppose it doesn't look like a Temu Leica though.

Who the fuck likes this focal length? What is its purpose?
>>4509780>Field of view is irrelevant to perspective or distortionTrue for perspective distortionOptical distortions are different, and while you might make some assumptions based on FL, also are independent>Why are you trying to convince people to reject something they can see any time they use a wide angle lens and has been understood in the arts for centuries? Because people like you often misunderstand things>If you use a lens with a wider than human FoV, you are likely to encounter distortionsAh, this is where your issue is. You assume all 28mm have noticeable distortion which is never corrected, while also probably ignoring the presence of distortion in tele lenses.Care to guess which of these are 28mm or 50mm? These are uncorrected by the way, I can do the same once corrected for an even bigger challenge. You are the expert right?>you're arguing semantics and missing the reality anyone who actually takes photos knowsI know enough to know optical distortions like barrel or pincushion vary largely by the lens and implying all 28mm have an inherent uncorrectable and impossible to unsee level of distortion is wrong.
>>4509780>The fact that you can minimize the distortion inherent to wide angle lenses by cropping in the centerNow you're confusing optical distortion with perspective distortion again.>makes people look different if you get up in their face with a wide angle vs if you get up in their face with a more normal angle Except these do look the same. The only thing you change is the framing due to field of view. That was the whole point of the bike example inhttps://fstoppers.com/architecture/how-lens-compression-and-perspective-distortion-work-251737A single shot with a 15mm and a stitched 70mm give you the same perspective distortion, because you had the same perspective. Also the horse example from the article correcting you that you probably didn't read.
>>4509781>>4509782I read all that text and then I looked at something with my 28mm lens and I looked at it filling the same area of my field of view and what do you know they looked different so I guess I don't give a fuck what term you want to use or why you think I'm arguing it's uncorrectable when I literally brought up the corrections available from manufacturers. I will believe my eyes and the converging lines in uncorrected images over whatever you're blabbing about.
>>4509762>it means I don't need a tilt-shift addon to see parallel line when I look at a building.> I will believe my eyes and the converging lines in uncorrected images over whatever you're blabbing about.lol>Lastly, there is also the case of converging lines. When the camera sensor is not perfectly parallel to the photographed object such as a building, it produces an image that at first might seem unnatural, due to its “leaning” effect, as shown below>However, this is a perfectly natural perspective with no distortion, because your eyes would see this exactly the same way. Lens manufacturers offer “perspective control” or “tilt-shift” lenses to deal with this particular situation, but the result actually turns out unnatural, since that’s not how it looks in real life when we look up. https://photographylife.com/what-is-distortionYou must have some fancy (or broken) eyesYou could take this as an opportunity to learn information that you use towards being a better photographer, for exampleIf you had a better understanding of what different types of distortions are, and how they manifest, you would have a better ability to account and control for them or use them to your advantageIf you want to stay ignorant, more power to you
>>4509783How come you cant tell which is the 28mm and which is the 50mm? Don't 28mm inherently distort? Interesting
Someone Step Up and Make a New Thread Already EditionPlease post film photos, talk about film photography, film gear like cameras, film stocks, news, and tips/tricks in this thread. Also talk about darkroom practices, enlargers, photo paper, techniques like dodging/burning, tools, and equipment related to enlarging, developing, and printing.Thread Question: If you were going to try one antiquated/non-traditional printing process (gum bichromate, collodion, oil print), which would it be and why?Previous thread: >>4504208
>>4509747Neat result, but yes f/8 is too shallow for most practical uses. You won't be able to. Just meter at typical values and then convert via google spreadsheet or find an app that allows you to put in the exposure information as read from your meter and then convert that to the appropriately low ISO and high f-stop. And then add in reciprocity compensation if you have info on that, but boomers on the web indicate that photo paper reciprocity is typically not an issue, and data for correct reciprocity information will be sparse.https://www.photrio.com/forum/threads/reciprocity-failure-as-it-relates-to-paper.97419/
>>4509747Your film plane and lens are not parallel and/or your film is not flat. Smaller aperture will help a lot, but if you can improve both of those things you'll see better results overall.I have an 8x10 film holder that uses an adhesive sheet to hold the film rather than those tabs on the sides. 3M makes a good double sided adhesive strips you can cut for a 4x5 holder if you can find it. Eventually you will need to account for the adhesive thickness, but that's not too difficult.
>>4509747Oh yeah, forgot to ask. Are you using direct positive paper or normal printing paper and inverting after digitizing?
>>4509768Fomaspeed variant 311 rc paper is what I used, it is negative made positive digitally. (For now)>>4509767I thought I got it all pretty straight and free from curvatures, but guess I will have to check again. Right now my paper sits on the ground glass and is pressed in place along the entire edge of the frame. I thought it was enough to keep it flat.>>4509748Thanks, good suggestion about taking notes, that should be helpful! Also because the paper isn't sensitive (or very little) to watm to red light which also needs to be taken into account, daylight is not a problem but all my interior lights are shades of yellow and the exposure works a little different, but trial and error gets you a long way.
>>4509769If you can replace the ground glass with a piece of clear glass it gives you an extremely clear image, but it can only be viewed through a loupe. One of the loupes you place on the glass to use.If you set your camera parallel to a textured wall and focus on it you can check for parallelity that way.Putting the paper directly on the GG will introduce a slight focusing error. You can always compensate with a little movement, but it won't let you be very precise until you get a good feel for it. Smaller apertures and shorter focal distances will mitigate this, but portraits may prove to be challenging if you want to get the eyes sharply in focus.
Show me your shitty artsy bullshit, bring out your Holgas, bring out your LensBabys, bring out your bullshit where your focus is ass and your framing is tainted

starting a new one since the last one is reaching limitI recently bought myself a new softbox, the exact one in pic, and it works surprisingly well. The issue is that it won't stay open all the way, so I need something to prop it open. I've found that using a credit card and ID card work pretty well, but I don't plan on using that for obvious reasons. Anyone have any suggestions to help a retard like me, something light and small?
The foss hating baby is here of course (does he ever leave to do his professional work with his professional subscriptionware?) And in case anyone is new let me just poi t out to you that he doesnt know anything and just repeats tired talking points he made up years ago.Noise profiles. You can use the prerecorded noise profiles supplied together with your software for most cameras. If you want perfect results, know that each sensor is unique and similar to color calibration you can record your cameras noise profile. All professional software and especially Darktable allows you to do this. Might be worth a shot if you will be using the camera as a working professional. The different noise reduction presets work well enough if you are just a hobby photog you absolutely dont even need profiled noise reduction.Obviously daktable offers all three levels (custom profiled, bundled profiled and sensor agnostic) noise reduction. Foss hater will spin this as a negative: "its too confusing, you have to learn and understand. LR, my preferred software, just has a big button that says 'redoos noice' and obvi thats the professional standard I expect".
>>4509667>>4509692Yes? If I use something not on daily or weekly basis, paying 20€ (not $) monthly is quite large sum, plus since I earn in PLN, multiply that by 4. Subscriptions adds up badly in long term.>>4509717Explains it, since these "arguments" are so bizarre. As for DT, it's simply that I was using profiled noise reduction option so far since it offered best results, it's matter of suddenly being denied solution you already got used to. I know I could try making my own profile but I honestly don't know how to properly prepare such photos (only understand that it would require underexposed, neutral and overexposed parts at wide selection of ISO values but nothing besides that or how to even properly provide such areas). I understand that DT is quite powerful tool and admit it is sometimes above my skill level. But maybe they will actually add that profile to next version, according to what >>4509625 says. When said next version will be released is another question.
>>4509718Why don't you just pirate c1 or lrc like every sane person
>>4509724I don't pirate software. I just don't. I don't want to take risks, especially given my inexperience in this matter.
>>4509717I've been called a darktable defender (because input more effort into helping the DT threads than just anout anyone), and now a FOSS hater because I think $300 one time for years of no issues and easy editing is a good deal >>4509718Just learn DT more, it sounds like that's what you want to do>>4509726Poor and tech illiterate, sad

>>4509597Just gotta drop a schizo post, sorry. 100 % convinced dogman actually exists. No way I’m shooting in the middle of the night. Stay away from cemetaries, woods, caves, desolate roads, fields (like corn fields) or honestly anywhere that isnt a well lit busy place at night hours. Left our national church due to monthly cut from my salary and being non-religious, same day I crash with my bike and sprain my ankle. Never sprained or broke anything before. Parents drove me from the hospital to our rural vacation cabin, and as we were going on a dark country side road all of a sudden some big dog or canine animal just sat on our side of the road, forcing my father to swerve to avoid crashing with it. Dark grey/black fur, huge beard, elongated head. Yeah I don’t know man, cant say what it was im just not going out with the camera at dusk/blue hour/dark unless in a city centre.
