Kind of bummed that there don't really seem to be any serious threads about animation on this board. Of course, most games nowadays just use motion capture for everything, but I'm still of the opinion that animations made by hand such as all the animations in Fumito Ueda's games have a special something about them that mocap cannot reach. And these aren't super stylized or cartoony animations either. They're grounded and realistic but have a lightness to them. I was trying to find resources on how to learn to animate like that, but it seems like a lost art. There are blender courses for animation out there such as the "Alive!" by P2D Design academy, but they all focus on they all focus on this over the top bouncy Disney style. Pretty much all across western animation courses.

that was terrible try again. Decide on what type of ball it is and how bug it is and match a real ball bouncing of that type. if all you take from a bouncing ball exercise is that it has to go up and down and move a little and maybe roll and squish you're getting ingrediants but then just haphazardly throwing them together expecting a cake.

Are there any programs then let you select controls/bones via keybind instead of relying on visual representations or a character picker?

That picker features about as many bones as a full keyboard has keys and it's a pretty simple one without facial controls, so it sounds like the most useless idea ever

Also individual keys/combos could be set to cycle through a range of controls/bones, this really isn't a difficult concept, it's been in videogames since... forever?

Is there really no 3D program that supports this?

will my CPU really cook itself if I try to use FreeCAD? I don't normally have any reservations about piracy but since I'm actually going to be making things with it I feel differently about CAD software, if possible I want my tools to belong to me indisputably, as a point of pride

Can I learn animation without giving a fuck about how to use all the modeling tools?

Learning animation with what? A lot of tools do animation, so need to be specific here. Might get lost using Blender, as you have to learn the interface first before you even get to animation.

Blender is finished.

Lets face it Blender in 3.1 was getting better then the retarded devs basically ruined it and made it worse and worse.

1) They literally removed the superior way to pick a modifier with muscle memory it is 1 click and a swipe to get what you want. Instead we got the retarded search bar where you need to type in the name of the modifier.

>Ah yes 2 clicks or 1 click 2 letter on the keyboard and ENTER
>Now picking a modifier is 400% slower!
Classic blender!

This was so controversial that people messaged the devs about all of this.

The bullshit fandom reason was that blender will add so many hecking modifiers that this needs to exist.

This started in version 3 We are on version 5 now and we did not even get 1 extra modifier and this shit stayed.

Many new features were introduced since 3.1, but whether it is worth installing depends on the type of content you are creating and the environment you're working in.
Just a couple examples from the top of my head.
- Khronos Color management for better colors in neutral lighting (important for product visualization)
- support for many additional color spaces
- Vulkan, makes Blender run 10x faster
- many new geometry nodes, allows to create complex systems and simulations
- better asset handling
- shader nodes have new additions
- better UV unwrapping
- EEVEE supports ray tracing to, can be enabled in render settings, if you so desire.

I'd say it's definitely worth upgrading
Even if you don't use the new functions, Vulkan alone will make blender run faster once enabled, so this is already worth it
>>
You're shortsighted, the changes they're making are better for the future.
A single monolithic menu isn't scalable for adding new modifiers, and the new one with the categories works better for custom user-made modifiers using the geometry nodes.
Essential features should not be plugins. Plugins should be specicific features downloaded separately so the bloat the application of people who would never use them. Removing the built-in plugins but also making it easier to download them and every other plugin is a step in this direction.
Dunno about the Cloth filter though, never used that. Are you sure it's removed? It's still in the manual for version 5.1. I can't be arsed to open blender and go test it though.
>>
>>1028716
>so the bloat the application of people
*so they don't bloat the application

>>1028712
Genuinely, there arent even any raytraced games worth installing. Why would i need raytracing in blender?
Yes i know it should have it in principle of "this software should do everything", but... more than it needs some brushes?
>>
>>1028712
I swear someone at Blender dev team is here. Those are the exact features i said that Blender lacks (except Vulkan). Also for context, the color management is from Photoshop because Maya and other paid don't offer the best colors just basic. Node is from Cinema 4D, Blender is clearly copying that without understanding why such nodes exist. Lastly, UV unwrapped was me saying Wings3D had better options for beginners to understand while Blender requires videos.

Someone is clearly reading our comments.

In fairness though Blender's regular 3D modelling workflow is fantastic, 10/10. It's when it comes to animation that it becomes a clunky unintuitive nightmare. I hope some day Blender is as good for animation as it is for modelling.

I don't understand the interface of the action editor at all. Everything that can go wrong does.

>half the actions aren't referenced by any object but have keyframes (how the fuck?)
>can't loop playback to just the start and end of the currently selected action? have to manually set playback start and end frame???
>exported object's animations have overlapping start and end frames or 0 frames, suggesting it's completely fucked

It can't be this bad if so many people use it. Surely there is just some obvious step I'm missing here?
>>
>>1028702
yes. what you ar missing s that blender devs are retards that want to reinvent the wheel so that autodesk dont sue their ass for using the same interfaces every other animation software uses
also forget about it theyll spend 10 more years adding geonodes shit while people use Houdini instead
>>
>>1028702
>half the actions aren't referenced by any object but have keyframes (how the fuck?)
An action is just a group of curves with keyframes and organized into tracks. It doesn't need to be linked to an object. This is what enables you to share the same action between different objects to have 2 characters walk the same, for example, or combine multiple actions in the NLA editor or animation layers addon

>can't loop playback to just the start and end of the currently selected action? have to manually set playback start and end frame???
Actions don't inherently have a start and end frame, and even if you enable them in the action properties there's no particular reason to think the playback range should always be fitted to the action length. Might be a short action in a longer sequence involving more objects, or the action itself is set to loop in the NLA, or the last keyframe is meant to be held for a number more frames, or there are keyframes outside the intended action range (which you need for some animation elements like followthrough). Of course all those ambiguities are lifted in the NLA, where you work with action strips that do have a start and end.

Also one of those things where if you really need it to hug the keyframes knowing the shortcuts makes it trivial (press down until you've jumped to the first keyframe, press ctrl-home, press up until you've jumped to the last keyframe, press ctrl-end). Or there's an addon to do that in one click.

Or another alternative is to make a second, linked scene in the same file with the playback range and action already set, if you really need an out of the box one-click toggle.

>exported object's animations have overlapping start and end frames or 0 frames, suggesting it's completely fucked
That's on the exporter or on you for not reading the exporter's docs on how to set the animation range for each action.
>>
>>1028675
You can't edit the geometry of instances. That's why the trim node won't work. Think of instances as "objects" only. Non-editable. You can move, scale, and rotate an instance in whole, like you would in object mode. But you can't edit them like you would in edit mode.

So in order to edit each branch's geometry, you have "realize" them. Using the realize instance node. That will convert them into editable geometry. And then you can use trim and all that jazz.

I've seen a lot of people dislike it. But there is no need to hate it. Blender is an alright little utility buddy. It's not the best at anything, though it's a great helper. Personally I only use it to clean up models post CAD modeling, store my hp and lp's in seperate collections, and it's simply great for that. I like Blender.

>Blender is an alright little utility buddy

i could say that if it werent almost impenetrably obtuse.
ive used a lot of free software for image, video, and basic model editing for little projects and most programs tend to be intuitive. you click on a thing and a menu appears that is relevant.

without knowing anything, you open blender and you have 10 tabs that dont do anything. tons of options that have no purpose or effect. usually free software is supposed to make advanced tools accessible to the public. blender does the opposite. you need to watch 10 guides, 8 which solving the wrong problems to figure out what you dont know the terminology to even search for the answer you need.

I'm looking around and I think it might be impossible to set up a material in such a way that it ignores the depth buffer (renders on top of everything). All solutions appear to be completely fucking insane gobbledegook about having an entirely separate object in a different scene. I'm going to lose my mind if this is actually the case.

bros, I had a perfect idea for a blender addon.

Basically, you import a grease pencil mesh or a grid topology, and then you project it into 4 ortho silloethes.

It's like an UV operation, but what you input in reality is just 4 svg that are projected into ortho views and 2 diagonals.

Then a spherical grid of vertex is projected using the reference views points.
>>
>>1028341
What's the use case?
>>
>>1028341
You are either a genius or a shizo. Which one is it? Elaborate what exactly the addon is supposed to do.
>>
vibe code it with ai
>>
>>1028341
Gay shit, that already exists.
you can make your topology in 2D then project it onto your mesh using the Shrinkwrap modifier already.
If you try to project from several perspective then you will get conflicts, overlaps, tangents
>>
>>1028354
Doesn't sound revolutionary if AI can code it.
