Started Judo about a month ago and I've been really struggling desu, more so than I feel I should. I'm not out of shape either, I have some of the best cardio in the whole class. It's just that the level of athleticism required for judo is much higher than I anticipated, and I feel I seriously lack the coordination and flexibility to properly execute many of the throws (I've yet to get one legitimately clean throw yet desu). Would BJJ be better for a guy like me? I've only done ne waza like twice but the times I have done it I felt it came much more naturally to me than the other aspects of judo.

>one month
>already quitting
It doesn't matter if it's BJJ, Judo or painting, if you are already finding issues, you are not going to last
>>
>>261550
You're probably very stiff, unbalanced and exerting mad amounts of energy like every white belt. You'll notice higher belts are relaxed until the moment they have to throw and then they explode.
>>
>>261550
Im a skinny fuck and a yellow belt and have landed some throws. Being skinny doesnt help at all but my technique is getting better. This shit takes time man but you'll eventually get the hang of it. Good luck landing osoto gari tho. That throw is impossible to land if youre a newbie cause its so easy to counter
>>
>>261627
It's easy to counter because it doesn't work without kizushi
But all throws don't work without kizushi
>>
>>261550
Bruh you are one month in? I do both judo and bjj and bjj is far easier on the body and in general. It's really an old mans martial art desu.

I'm a lightweight, (1.78m, 60kg), i've been going to judo for some months now, I'm liking it a lot, but, is it comparable/better to wrestling? Especially for a guy my size, I always thought wrestling would be useless as from what I know, it uses a lot of raw strength, while judo (though it still uses strength) is better suited for taking down heavier/stronger people. Is this right? Should I try doing some wrestling? I find judo very good but also sometimes limited by the sport

>The only common opinion I tend to see is that it's pretty fun
Sounds to me like that is the most important factor in being consistent in any martial art. I tried Judo myself and thought it was fun as shit, but I didn't stick with it because of the fear of getting injured by a partner I couldn't trust. I should get back in there and try again.
>>
>>236726

This guy is correct. All grappling relies on knowledge of fundamental human biomechanics and the laws of physics. The only major difference among the grappling styles are the uniform and the rules etc, but there are more similarities than differences. If you are a good grappler, you will be decent in any other grappling style, and only a short familiarization period away from being good again. Training the style you like the most, and dabbling in other styles whenever you get a chance is the best choice.
>>
>>242810

I eagerly await the day when you ragequit mma after a few classes, as you did judo and freestyle, and then endlessly spam the board about how mma doesn't work.
>>
>>242810
You strip down to your underwear in a real fight?
>>242810
Hips back and sprawling negates lot of wrestling at an intermediate level.
>>242810
Not that long lmao, it's just harder to do against a resisting opponent that is also training the same martial art. BJJ people get btfo'd by yellow belts in standup.
>>
>>243798
You do know where bjj gets most of it's techniques from you 0 iq. Most places do newaza aka ground game probably 20% of the class. Lots of competitive Judo people crosstrain just to get better at it with bjj. A judo black belt is equivalent to a blue belt and can't compete with bjj white belts.

For anyone who has done a martial art

Is it normal to have mixed emotions about it?

None of the stuff I've tried (Boxing, Judo, Wrestling, BJJ)

Has made me instantly think "omg I love this. This is it. I'm doing this for life"

It's usually a combination of "well that was really difficult and tiring, is this worth it, this is going to be difficult but I'll be a better person mentally and physically, I guess.. just stick with it?"

Or were you instantly hooked

The only part I really enjoy is me grasping a certain concept and executing it, seeing my overall progress, however the training itself is just boring repetition most of the time, and that's all there's to it for me.
>>
>>244716
I do for health reasons. For now. Maybe it will be more fun as I get better. Still a NOGI newb. Hardest part is of course just getting ot out of the door. When you get there, change. 1,5 hour and forget. Come home tired as shit knowing it's good for the body and mind.
>>
>>253846
What do you mean? I just don't think they happen that often. I didn't go out of my way to avoid it. I got ringworm a couple times and that was the worst of it. Sometimes things ache and hurt. But I just stretch and train. I didn't even ever choose my partners wisely, just whoever wanted to rumble in any school in any country. I don't think there's very many people throwing kani basami or really in a rush to yank your arm

~~Tokyo Climbing Edition~~

>Where do I start?
People typically start in the gym and branch off outdoors and find their niche, be it bouldering, trad, sport or a mixture of the above. Some never leave the gym at all. Ultimately it doesn't matter - just get started and enjoy yourself.

>How fit do I have to be to start? Do I have to be able to do x amount of pull-ups?
Being light, strong and flexible helps at the higher levels but climbing is open to almost anyone and is fairly intuitive to most. Even if your body is feeble and weak now, you will develop strength over time by virtue of just climbing. Climbing is a holistic sport and success often hinges upon many factors, not just strength and power, but having these qualities definitely helps when you breach into the higher grades.

>What shoes do I buy?
If you're starting out in the gym, don't worry too much: get some snug shoes without dead space that don't cause you lasting pain. Some people (such as the famed shoe designer Heinz Mariacher) recommend wearing soft shoes when you're starting out -- this makes sense since your footwork will probably suck and the increased feedback will pay dividends over time. You really don't need fancy expensive shoes when you're starting out, but certain shoe properties help send harder problems (e.g. stiff shoes for standing on tiny granite edges or soft shoes for sandstone/gritstone smears).

No. Instead of trans flags, we'll have gun accessories. Instead of Yoga, we'll have conceal-carry instructors. Instead of queer inclusion nights, we'll have self defense practice and time at the shooting range. We need to fund conservative gyms.

Do you guys make notes and diagrams for your martial arts and have reference books?
I have been thinking about getting the Kodokan book since I won't be doing judo for the foreseeable future and also making notes for my karate and judo.
>>
Nah
It's a rookie mistake to try and turn a physical activity into an academic one
This in the literature is exactly what causes people to choke, They spend too much time thinking about what to do and not enough time just doing it reflexively

You can't summon skill through a cognitive process, you have to just move and let your nervous system go on autopilot
You can't think faster than your senses
>>
>>261823
Just watch footage. You can find videos on any particular fight/technique/martial art, helps a lot with development and applying skills. Plus I feel like visuals work much better then a book or something.
>>
>>261831
>>261872
Fair points. Though do you ever keep diagrams for reference or have a playlist of videos? I tend to save videos and rewatch ones that I feel I need more practice on and mimic what I see. For diagrams I pretty much just use for kata

Before outdoor championship races start there was an optional warmup race at Glen Helen call the 'Stopwatch Nationals' but usually the big teams do let their riders race out of fear they get hurt before the championship races start. Curt Nichols took the early lead and was passed by Barica on his Ducati. Barcia went down and took the lead and went down again later but still won the race. Looked good but no real competition. Barcia will likely place 6th-10th every race.

What to look for in a martial arts gym:
>Physically conditioned, fit participants
>Trainer with certified professional record and a training history with at least one athlete who competes successfully
>Sparring, "aliveness" in training
>At least one participant competes at amateur or professional level
>Clean facility with mats that are frequently sanitized

What to be wary of:
>Fat, physically subpar students
>Graduation fees (e.g. "pay $200 and advance to next belt extra quick!")
>No proven athletes training there

If I wasn't a retarded grug I'd play team sports I bet it's a great way to get social/team skills. I tried rugby for a few workouts but everyone seemed to be trying way too hard, MA/powerlifting dudes are usually the most chill ones.
>>
Also what's interesting is unless you're wrestling, martial arts tend to hold back in sparring. Football or rugby guys are taught to go hard during practice, I wouldn't be surprised that a linebacker would tackle a MT guy 9/10 times in sparring. A boxer would just keep running away and a judoka would maybe lose once or twice due to sheer aggression from linebacker, then adjust. But out ON TEH STREETZ if you're an amateur linebacker you're probably gonna tackle people no problem.
>>
>>261921
People always say that's the advantage in grappling because you can train at near 100% safely
But I've been around and yes you have some striking base people that get punchy from overdoing it
But literally every grappler I know is completely fucking broken

been such a shit weekend for the bodyboarding/punchy shortboard waves in ventura, this swell was pretty hyped but it's just been walled out and blown out from 6am onwards. managed to get a reasonable session at emma wood mid morning today, if you ever watch dane reynolds chapter 11 vids you might know the spot. there were about 20 shortboarders sitting on the north peak of the spot which was breaking quite well, about head high, but i was sitting on the middle peak with no one else out. the waves were far less consistent at the middle peak but when they did come through i had no one to compete with and that's always preferable for me as a sponger. i got a couple of sweet little cover-ups and did some pretty reasonable sized rolls considering the shitty conditions.

Don't think so. Heres something from a Slate article, "That combat sports readily lend themselves to eroticization is hardly news. The Olympics of Greek antiquity prominently featured wrestling, boxing and pankration (a sort of latter day MMA). In a seeming nod to the audience’s sexual voyeurism, clothing was eventually done away with and experts have argued that the events were 'all about watching naked men.' "

Wrestling as a sport has always had a sexual component to it, and wrestling rituals and mating rituals have their overlaps (showing the physically fitness/attractiveness of a potential partner)
