Welcome to /diy/, a place to:Post and discuss /diy/ projects, ask questions regarding /diy/ topics and exchange ideas and techniques. Please keep in mind:- This is a SFW board. No fleshlights or other sex toys.- No weapons. That goes to /k/ - Weapons. The workmanship and techniques involved in creating objects which could be used as weapons or the portion of a weapons project that involves them (e.g., forging steel for a blade, machining for gunsmithing, what epoxy can I use to fix my bow) may be discussed in /diy/, but discussing weapon-specific techniques/designs or the actual use of weapons is disallowed. Things such as fixed blade knives or axes are considered tools, things such as swords, guns or explosives are considered weapons.- No drugs or drug paraphernalia (See Global Rule 1). If you want to discuss something that could involve such things (e.g., carving a tobacco pipe from wood) that's fine, but make sure it's /diy/ related and doesn't involve drugs or it will result in deletion/ban.Helpful links:https://sites.google.com/site/diyelmo/ (archived)http://www.engineeringtoolbox.com/
Some friendly suggestions for posting:- First ask Google, then ask /diy/. Your question will probably be better received if you do so.- List available resources (tools, materials, budget, time, etc.)- Try to use pictures and explain the goal, if possible- Be patient, this is a slow board; your thread will be around for days.- Share your results! /diy/ loves to see problems solved and projects completed!

>>2991384>i thought snow only fell in 32 or below,You're seeing ground temp. The clouds where the snow is forming are much colder. In my experience and in my area, when it's about to snow it usually begins at 35° F.That's cool enough for it to reach the ground and not melt immediately. The snow starts collecting on the grass and forms an insulation layer for the rest of the snow falling. If it's snowing hard the collecting snow will chill the air allowing it to stay and buildup.
>>2991384>i left laptop plugged into jackery 300w power bank for an hour and its only pulling about 5 to 10 watts.>i just opened laptop and turned it on and battery is still at 0%Sounds like time for a new battery.
does this imply battery suddenly shit the bed sometime in the past 12hours? i tried the lenovo/thinkpad hard reset, still wont charge. and iirc at somepoint my laptop bag got a decent whack against the truck while shifting things around. possible loose connection?
>>2991384>sitting in the back of a truck in the snowcold can reduce the battery performance. The battery's computer will disable charging if it detects any conditions are unsafe for it to be charged, like being too hot or cold. Low 40s is probably too low. Let it warm up in room temperature for like 12 hours and try again. It's important to give it plenty of time because batteries are dense in matter and take forever to adjust, and we don't want condensation in the computer while it is powered on. Don't let it get this cold again cuz extreme temperatures fuck up the battery chemistry Check power settings to make sure it is configured to go to sleep when closing the lid. Install the latest drivers and firmware from the manufaturer. This might be a known issue and the updates might fix it. I notice a lot of newer computers (besides macs) kinda suck at their sleep power consumption now days, so it might just be poor design on the manufacturer's part. Most computers now days are lucky to make it 3 days in sleep.Otherwise check the battery's health. In Windows this can be done by opening power shell and running powercfg /batteryreport and then opening the file it displays. I usually swap out batteries once they get to 60-65% healthFinally if the battery health is good (~70% or more of design capacity), open the computer, unplug the battery and plug it back in. If still nah, I'd be looking at a replacement battery at this point

>>2988967>when portland cement has been a thing for 3k yrs?>The cement was so named by Joseph Aspdin, who obtained a patent for it in 1824, because, once hardened, it resembled the fine, pale limestone known as Portland stone, quarried from the windswept cliffs of the Isle of Portland in Dorset.Portland cement, which is an ingredient of modern concrete, is limestone and clay baked in a kiln to make clinker. It is then ground down and mixed with gypsum to form cement. When you mix in an aggregate it becomes concrete. Opus caementicium, Roman concrete, is quicklime, pozzolana, and an aggregate of pumice.Stay in school kids, or you will end up like this phone poster.

>breaking stuff even worse than when it started because you're still trying to grasp the processI hate this feeling.
>>2988753I miss having the time to take stuff apart for fun. I also hate that my attitude toward DIY now is nothing more than a compulsion to do the work myself and a strong desire to just get it over with.
>>2988753I wish fixing random old shit was my dayjob: very low risk, mostly challenging, sort of an investigative endeavor, and has a social utility. A shame that in the times we live in repairing is uneconomical for most consumer goods, especially old ones.
>>2988498I bricked one of my security cameras and my car stereo trying to modify firmware in the last week lol. Going to fix both for sure, but it still sucks. If you want to learn, breaking shit and then figuring out how to fix it is one of the best ways to do it because the fixing part generally means understanding how it works on a fundamental level.
>>2989018make it your dayjob

>>2986990Found a nice set of pliers at a German flea market. Wasn't free, more like 1 Euro a piece, but I'm real excited about them. Also came with a vintage Toyota Motor Made in Japan flathead screwdriver.I cleaned the rust off with citric acid, sharpened them, and now they're good as new. Caliper for scale.Love the little Bonum pincer pliers a ton. Going to use them for cutting bike cables and Gunpla sprues.
>>2991390Here they are post cleanup. I messed up sharpening the small Bonum one initially and rounded off the cutting edge on one side, instead of just flattering the bevel. Managed to re-sharpen them though, and now it cuts through everything from steel wire to tissue paper like butter. This was my firat time restoring a flea market tool, and I think i'm gonna try and do this more often. 1 Euro for these is a steal. Probably a lot of quality tools to be found on German flea markets, with all the Marshall Plan funded industry we used to have here. Boomers dying off in droves too rn, good time to stock up on their old hardware. Not sure what the Stubai pliers are for though. Anyone know?
Do you buy/use old or novel tools?

im looking to diy this bed and i refuse to pay 275 for these parts alone. how?
>>2989289You're gonna get mold under your mattress within 5 years and you will have to throw it out, and the plywood as well. To avert this you should do this now: cut slots or drill a bunch of large regular holes into the plywood leaving no unventilated area of mattress -plywood interface larger than about 3"
>>2989164Double sided tape.
>>2989306This, slats are less springy than having a box spring, but it's also better for your back.
>>2989324>>2989337sometimes mattresses can ventilate through themselves from the top depending on material if you don't lay on it 24/7
>>2989289first bed i made was plywood sides. woke up every morning feeling rough as fuck. longer i spent in it the worse it got, throat red raw nose burning. swapped ply for 2x4 and immediately stopped. probably all the formaldahyde or whatever in the glue.i agree with you about sturdiness i don't think springiness under the mattress does anything, beds are just like that because its cheaper to make and ship i assume.but the foam mattress brother cannot be good for you either.

>>2991344>thinking there's any significant difference between the two in regard to strength and temp.at least pla prints faster.
>>2991334>or, you could just babystep you zheight while printing a few skirt loops.I found some test squares, so I think the procedure is to set them to print sequentially and then like you said, manually pause between squares and step it down. The problem is that when it fails, it forms a blob under the nozzle, so I need some clearance to get it off. I might hack the gcode to give me that though, shouldn't be too hard.

Can I get some advice painting metallics? I wanted to try Kaleido primer and metallic paint but these are water based. If I let the metallic layer cure over 24 hours can I use Mr. Color Gundam colors (solvent based) on top, or would they still dissolve the layers beneath? I don't know if Kaleido paints are closer in composition to the Aqueous or Acrysion lines.
