I'll use my family's name when I'm no longer ashamed of it.

Arin Fairfax, the eldest heir to Fairfax Industries, has been living in hiding for the past 5 years after being shot and left for dead on their 18th birthday. Arin doesn't know who is trying to keep them from taking control of their parent's company... but in the avarice fueled viper's nest that is Fairfax Industries it could be anyone.

Taking on the name "Pocket", Arin desperately wants to keep their true identity a secret… not only for their own protection; but because they want to forge their own identity separate from their parents.

Overview

[edit | edit source]

Pocket's motivation in the ritual is to stop their father, Maximilian Fairfax,[1][2] and to take control of Fairfax Industries.[3][4]

Biography

[edit | edit source]

Arin Fairfax was the eldest heir to Fairfax Industries, set to one day take over the organization. Before their assassination, Arin was attending Blackmore Academy[5] and was betrothed to MinaMina due to an arranged marriage.[6][7][8]

Walter Fairfax statue

Calico was the assassin hired to kill Arin, who survived because the bullet missed their heart.[9] It's implied that Enchanter's Satchel also helped Arin survive.[10][11] After the assassination attempt, Arin was protected by Mo & Krill[12][13] and cut ties with all people from their past life, as they didn't know who could be trusted.[14] Taking up a new identity as "Pocket", Pocket tries their best to hide their identity, but hasn't given up on their expensive jacket.[15] Some time after the assassination, Pocket left New York before returning to participate in the ritual.[16][17] Pocket is 23 years old at the time of the ritual.[18]

Pocket believes that their father, Maximilian Fairfax, was behind their attempted assassination.[19] Around the time of their assassination, Pocket took their suitcase from their father.[10][11] Pocket's magical suitcase, while powerful, was never meant to be used as a weapon,[20] and Pocket is trying to keep their suitcase away from Maximilian.[21]

Pocket likely has at least one younger sibling, since they're described as the "eldest heir" to Fairfax Industries.

A statue of Walter Fairfax, presumably an ancestor of Pocket, can be found in the garden behind the Baroness Hotel. Walter is depicted as an old man with frogs crawling over his legs. The statue also appears in Pocket's background in the hero select screen.

Personality

[edit | edit source]

Pocket's years spent on the run have shaped them into a resilient person with strong ideals.[22][23] Pocket is not especially talkative,[24] and they typically push people away when they try to offer them support.[25][26][27] Others often describe them as "sad" and "angsty" as a result.[28][29][30] While they have a somewhat gruff exterior, they are more amicable and soft-spoken around those that they trust;[31] they also have a cheeky side to their otherwise serious personality.[32][33][34]

Pocket hates violence and is only in the ritual as a last resort.[35][36][37] Pocket is horrified with themselves whenever they need to use Affliction,[38][39][40] trying to justify it as the spirits killing their enemies, not them.[41] A few characters notice that Pocket doesn't really want to be fighting in the ritual.[42][43][44]

Pocket wants to build a better world.[45] Pocket hates those whom they perceive to be complicit with Fairfax's actions and making the world worse.[46][47] Pocket also dislikes being seen as a kid.[48]

Pocket refuses to take up their old family name until they're no longer ashamed of it.[49] That said, Pocket still sees themselves as a Fairfax.[50] Pocket worries that, by killing people in the ritual, they're turning more and more into someone they never wanted to be: their father.[51][52] Pocket views themselves as the rightful heir of Fairfax Industries.[53]

Pocket doesn't expect to win the ritual.[54]

Appearance

[edit | edit source]

Pocket is a slim, light-skinned person of presumably mixed Asian-White descent (based on their facial features and the appearance of their father Maximilian and ancestor Walter). They have brown eyes and short black hair with edges pointed upwards. They wear an expensive but ragged dark green jacket with 6 pockets, fingerless black gloves, an orange scarf with edges resembling skeleton hands, a white shirt with a large collar, orange vest, black necktie, brown pants and black shoes. Their inconspicuous magic suitcase contains many frogs, including a large one that attaches to the ziplines by its tongue. Their weapon is a Nock volley gun, though it behaves as a shotgun.

Information

[edit | edit source]

Pocket's backstory and abilities have some similarities to the Biblical Plagues of Egypt: the death of the firstborn, the plague of frogs, and the pestilence ( Affliction).

Character Relationships

[edit | edit source]

Maximilian Fairfax and Pocket's mother

[edit | edit source]

Pocket believes their father, Maximilian Fairfax, was behind their attempted assassination.[19] Pocket wants to stop their father rather than kill him, although Pocket believes that Maximilian would rather Pocket try to kill him.[2]

Pocket dislikes their parents and is ashamed of their family's name.[2][55][49] While trapped in the Baroness Hotel, Pocket is taunted by The Doorman who tells Pocket that they have no home and that their parents wanted Pocket dead.[56][57] Pocket believes their father is "not a good man",[58] and their mother "isn't worth saving" and didn't mourn Pocket's death,[59][60] and compares her to Yamato.[61]

Maximilian seems to know that Pocket survived, as in The Binding of Oathkeeper, he asks Lady GeistLady Geist if she knows where Pocket is.[62] In a seasonal New York Oracle headline, Maximilian donates "a small fortune" to New York orphanages, telling the press that "nobody should be without family on the holidays".[63]

Dynamo is Pocket's godfather. He recognizes Pocket and says he would have helped them if he knew they were alive. Pocket didn't tell Dynamo that they survived because they weren't sure if they could trust him.[14][64]

Mo & Krill protected Pocket after their assassination, and they regard each other as family.[12][13][65] They love each other.[66]

Calico was the assassin sent to kill Pocket 5 years before the events of the ritual.[18]

Calico enjoys "tying up loose ends" if she kills Pocket during the ritual.[67] She also mentions that Maximilian Fairfax will "have questions",[68] lining up with Pocket's belief that Maximilian Fairfax was the one who sent Calico to kill Pocket.

Pocket, naturally, dislikes Calico for almost killing them.[69][70]

Mina was Pocket's fiancée in an arranged marriage.

Mina hates Pocket for "ruining her life", as their assassination meant Mina couldn't become a Fairfax.[6][7][8]

It's implied that Mina and Pocket never loved each other, as she only ever cared about getting their last name.[71] It's currently unknown what Pocket thinks of Mina.

Character Interactions

[edit | edit source]
  • Despite Pocket's desire to hide their true identity, the other characters seem to be aware of their background and refer to them as an "upstart",[72] a "trust fund baby"[73] and a "spoiled brat".[74]
  • Pocket loathes McGinnisMcGinnis due to her work for Fairfax Industries.[47][75][46]
  • Pocket thinks Yamato would get along with their mother.[61]
  • Pocket says Vyper is more unstable than their parents[55] and is relieved when she is killed, even when both are on the same team.[76]
  • When Pocket was younger, they idolized KelvinKelvin.[77]
  • Pocket used to be a big fan of ParadoxParadox,[78] but now sees her as "just another rich asshole".[79]
  • Lady Geist recognizes Pocket, but mistakes them for a street urchin. She thinks Pocket's jacket is stolen.[15]
  • BebopBebop offers Pocket a place to stay after the ritual.[80]
  • GravesGraves, ParadoxParadox and YamatoYamato want Pocket's case.[81][82][83]
    • WardenWarden warns Pocket that their case will be their undoing.[84]
  • Vindicta believes her life was harder than Pocket's,[85] while Pocket believes her rage is misguided.[86][87]
  • According to Rem, Pocket's clothes smell like the sewer.[88]
  • Ivy, Rem, and Vyper like Pocket's scarf.[89][90][91]

Removed Lore

[edit | edit source]
  • In Pocket's original model, their left hand had an eye tattoo on its back and a decayed skin tissue that glowed with the suitcase. This was removed when their model was updated. However, the current model is still not in a finished state, as it has clipping issues and flat textures.

Removed character interactions

[edit | edit source]
  • Pocket dislikes Wrecker and wants to dismantle Eldritch Tactical Solutions.[92][93]

Neon Prime - Synth

[edit | edit source]
Neon Prime's Synth

In late Neon Prime/Shadowline, Pocket was named Synth and was later named Fairfax. Synth's model was a modified version of Team Fortress 2's Scout with Holliday's head.

Synth/Fairfax was trying to take over Fairfax Industries, similarly to Pocket.[94] However, characters were a lot more hostile towards Fairfax and often mentioned that they were "disowned".[95][96]
