"Using his beta capsule, Hayata becomes Ultraman!"
The sequences with Ultraman fighting proved to be so expensive to film, that the producers needed a way to limit the scenes to only a few minutes for each episode. The solution was to give the character the weakness that he can not survive in his true self for more than roughly three minutes before he runs out of energy. This is marked with his warning chest light, called the Colortimer, which begins to blink with increasing speed as his energy runs out.
Some monsters from Ultra Q appear in this series, some with changes. A few examples: In Episode 4 ("5 Seconds Before the Explosion!"), Ragon, the Gill-Man-style humanoid fish, returns in giant size and breathes fire like Godzilla. In Episode 8 ("The Lawless Monster Zone"), the monster Pegila returns as the monster Chandrah, fighting the monster Red King (and loses). And in that same episode, the giant-sized robot monster Garamon is reused as the friendly, pint-sized monster Pigmon.
The character 'Ultraman' was ranked #23 in TV Guide's list of the "25 Greatest Sci-Fi Legends" (1 August 2004 issue).
The character of Ultraman went through many changes as pre-production went along. At first, the planned series "Woo" had a corporeal space creature with eyes, who befriended a reporter named Jôji Akita, but the Self Defense Forces were after him. This was basically the monster version of Doctor Who, and Woo's personality was comical. Then they planned "Bemular" (retitled "Science Patrol - Bemular") about a defense force disguised as an art/photography team. One of the members, little did anyone know, gained the ability to transform into a giant birdlike humanoid monster called Bemular (this is not the same Bemular that Ultraman would fight in Episode 1), who defends Earth from monsters, aliens and other threats. Unlike Woo, Bemular was a tough and righteous fighter (Bemular looked very similar in design to the title monster of Daikyojû Gappa). This then evolved into "Redman," the title hero of which slightly resembled Ultraman as we know him, but he looked more demonic and had horns. Both Bemular and Redman were designed by Tôru Narita, who came up with the final design for Ultraman based on his Redman design, now resembling a less-scary Buck Rogers-style alien being (with a bit of the iconic "Roswell Alien" as well). The characteristic "ColorTimer" (the "warning light" on his chest) was added at the eleventh hour.
As is the case with his previous series, Ultra Q, series creator Eiji Tsuburaya uses and redecorates famous Toho monsters for the show. Baragon (from Frankenstein Conquers the World), who was also used in aforementioned series (as the monster Pagos), was used as monsters Neronga in Episode 3 ("Sally Forth, Science Patrol!") and Gabora in Episode 9 ("Operation Lightining Speed"). And the King of the Monsters himself, Godzilla (who was also used as the monster Gomess in the first episode of Q), was used as the frillnecked lizard monster Jirass in Episode 10 ("The Mysterious Dinosaur Base"). Using the body of the "Mosu-Goji" suit and the head of the "Daisensô-Goji" suit, Godzilla/Jirass was fitted with a frill collar around his neck, as well as a minor paint job. This was because the script called for a lizard monster, so Eiji said, "Okay, then, let's use a Godzilla suit!"
The Science Patrol's Jet VTOL (AKA: Jet Beetle) was originally from the Toho SF epic, Gorath, but with a new paint job and accessories.
When directing Episode 36, "Gift from the Sky", Akio Jissoji played a humorous prank on star Susumu Kurobe by making him mistake a spoon for the Beta Capsule when transforming into Ultraman. This became a popular in-joke to many fans of the show (even American fans like cartoonist Jeff Nicholson, who made an Ultraman parody called "Ultra Klutz", in which the title superhero transforms using a spoon).
For about the first third of the series, the opening credits featured silhouettes of monsters that had appeared in "Ultra Q", such as Kanegon and Gorou. For the remaining episodes, silhouettes of "Ultraman" monsters like Gyango and the iconic Baltan were shown instead.

Decades ago, a being known as the Giant of Light joined together with Shin Hayata of the Science Special Search Party to save Earth from an invasion of terrifying monsters called Kaiju. Now, many years later, those dark days are fading into memory, and the world is at peace. But in the shadows a new threat is growing, a danger that can only be faced by a new kind of hero – a new kind of ULTRAMAN… Shinjiro is an ordinary teenager, but his father is the legendary Shin Hayata. When he learns that his father passed on the “Ultraman Factor” to him and that he possesses incredible powers, nothing will ever be the same again.
VIZ Media recently welcomed Eiichi Shimizu and Tomohiro Shimoguchi for their first-ever professional appearance in the U.S. as official Guests of Honor at the 2015 San Diego Comic-Con.
“In Japan, Ultraman is something of a national symbol, an iconic superhero that is instantly recognizable and universally loved, and we’re excited to bring the brand new manga to a new generation of fans,” says Mike Montesa, Editor. “The series wonderfully updates the classic sci-fi property with cinematic action sequences and sleek character designs. Catch the exciting return of this legendary hero this summer!”
Eiichi Shimizu worked on the story, script and mechanical design for ULTRAMAN. Tomohiro Shimoguchi provided character design and art. Together, the two have formed a creative dream team to produce a number of works including ULTRAMAN (Hero’s) and Kurogane no Rainbareru (Linebarrels of Iron, Akita Shoten). In addition to comics, they have expanded their field of interest to include character designs for video games and action figures.

Nintendo's Kick-Arse 1966 Board Game
From Kotaku
Before they made video games, Nintendo made loads of other sweet stuff. One of the sweetest was this Ultraman board game, which has art that looks as awesome today as it did in 1966.
As you can see in the gallery on Before Mario, the game — released using the old “Nintendo Game” logo — doesn’t look terribly complicated (not that it should have been, since it was for kids). You spun a dial, you moved around, you battled some monsters.

Kamen Rider Ooo Hitting Malaysian Market Soon
From BERNAMA
Malaysian fans of the Japanese superhero, Kamen Rider can prepare themselves for the arrival of the most popular Kamen Rider character - Kamer Rider 000.
For the first time in South East Asia, Litt Tak Sdn Bhd (Litt Tak) together with Bandai Namco Group (Bandai) will introduce the character that has been described as the most successful one in the history of the series.
Set up in 1985, Litt Tak is the main distributor of Japanese action figures and toys.
Litt Tak, along with Bandai, are also the distributors of other superhero action figures including the Power Rangers, Ultraman and Ben 10.
Bandai (H.K) Co. Ltd Sales Manager, Yun Keichin said that the Bandai toy industry was valued at US$5 billion, 14 per cent of which came from the sales of toys and products related to the Kamen Rider series.
THE ORIGINS OF KAMEN RIDER
Kamen Rider (translated as the Masked Rider) is a weekly Japanese fictional drama by manga artist Shotaro Ishinomori, featuring a motorcycle-riding superhero with an insect motif who protects the world by battling off supervillains.
The television series premiered in 1971. The popularity of the series has spawned many television, theatrical and film sequels, as well as turned it into a large network of product franchise.
"Of all the variations of Kamen Rider, the OOO version, with 48 episodes, is the most popular one. We are also fond of it because one of its episodes served as the 1000th episode of Kamen Rider series since it premiered 43 years ago", added Yun.
In Japan, the Kamen Rider OOO series recorded the highest percentage of viewership in television history, capturing the attention of over 25 per cent of children aged between four and six.
Kamen Rider OOO differs from his predeccessors due a new ability to collect special coin-like medals called the O-Medal. The medals are the centre of the superhero's different powers, enabling him to transform and face different battle scenes accordingly.

Ultraman book ban leads to outpouring of mockery
From The Malay Mail Online
The government’s ban on the book “Ultraman the Ultra Power” today invited a steady stream of ridicule from Malaysian internet users agape at the decision to exile the popular Japanese superhero.
“Ultraman” quickly became a trending topic on Twitter this evening as news began to surface that the comic book was banned by the Home Ministry for containing elements detrimental to public order, with Malaysians taking turns to poke fun at the decision.
“For goodness sake, what is this ban on #Ultraman? What’s next? Space Cop Gaban? Kesatria Baja Hitam? Why not Power Rangers too?” a user under the handle of @mfosa posted in response to the news.
Another user, @anthraxxxx, expressed support for the ban in apparent jest.
“I can understand KDN’s reason to ban Ultraman’s book. When Ultraman drops on a city fighting monsters, it will create chaos and destruction,” he wrote, using the Home Ministry’s Malay acronym.
Even Cabinet ministers were not beyond joining in the merriment.
“Apa salah Ultraman?” (What is wrong with UItraman?) @khairykj, the Twitter account of Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin posted.

'Ultraman' flies into Guinness World Records for most spinoffs
A total of 27 spinoffs of the "tokusatsu" science fiction series, known for its special effects, has been aired since the first series “Ultraman” premiered in 1966, Guinness World Records said.
The 27 spinoffs include “Ultra Seven” (1967), the anime version “The Ultraman” (1979) and “Ultra Galaxy Mega Monster Battle” (2007), in which monsters play leading roles, and the latest “Ultraman Galaxy,” which started in July.
Tsuburaya Productions sent related materials about its long-running series and spinoffs this spring at the request of Guinness World Records, a company official said.
The award gives the production company another reason to celebrate since this year also marks its 50th anniversary.

THE LATEST ‘ULTRAMAN’ MANGA TAKES AN ARMORED APPROACH
If you had to compare Tsuburaya’s Ultraman to a Western superhero concept, the closest comparison would probably be… Captain Marvel or a much friendlier version of Alan Moore’s Marvelman? Every incarnation of the longrunning Japanese tokusatsu and anime empire is different, but more often than not, the hero is the result of a nobel member of a kind of cosmic pantheon merging with a human host (or taking on a human form) to defend planet Earth from invading kaiju from space. In Japan’s Monthly Hero’s Magazine, however, manga creators Eiichi Shimizu and Tomohiro Shimoguchi present a normal human donning a special high tech suit to protect the planet as Ultraman.
As seen in a new motion comic video promoting the series’ third collected volume, ordinary teen Shinjiro Hayata dons a high tech “Ultra Suit” created by his father Shin Hayata — the original human host for Ultraman — to covertly combat threats as part of a secret organization. In this continuity, it’s been around 40 years since the original Ultraman left Earth. When new monsters attack, it’s up to Shinjioro to face the new foes as he’s the only one with a bloodline that’s compatible with the armored suit, which channels energies unique to Ultraman and other beings from the Land of Light. And don’t worry, the suit of armor isn’t like Iron Man’s where it’s just a normal dude inside some metal shooting repulsor blasts. This suit sees Shinjiro do all the usual Ultra stuff, like growing to a height of several stories and blasting evil with the hero’s signature Ultra Beam/Specium Ray.

New Ultraman Ginga series to start in July
From The Asahi Shimbun
The latest Ultraman character better get his uniform ready for action, or rather his school uniform. Tsuburaya Productions Co. unveiled a new Ultra Series superhero Ultraman Ginga (galaxy) in April to celebrate its 50th anniversary.
An 11-episode, 30-minute live-action show will be broadcast as part of the "Shin Ultraman Retsuden" (new Ultraman chronicles) TV series set to start in July, followed by two special episodes, according to the production company.
In a major departure from the previous Ultra warriors, the main character is a high school boy named Hikaru Raido. Other main characters are also high school students.
The story begins when Hikaru gets the Ginga Spark, a mysterious item that transforms its holder into Ultraman Ginga, a gigantic warrior from space. The gadget can also bring other Ultra warriors and "kaiju" monsters--that were turned into small dolls by a powerful dark force in deep space--back to their original forms.

The Time Is Now To Save SPACE WARRIORS 2000 And Bring It To DVD!
Source: Richard Gladman
Do you love Ultraman? Do you love giant Japanese monster movies? Do you love really weird obscure movies?
Well odds are if you are reading Monster Island News the answer is pretty obvious isn't it!
Let me tell you about a a very cool little film that you probably have never heard of called "Space Warriors 2000" which is a mish-mash of clips from old "Ultraman" episodes, and from the looks of it other Japanese monster movies, combined with new footage to create a stand alone movie.
Think of it like "Power Rangers", "Gamera Super Monster" or how Turkish sci fi films are made.
Anyway the film was produced in the mid 1980s and released to TV here in the United States. After the movie aired it disappeared into obscurity never to be seen again.
That is, until now. It seems that a distributor called Spectrum Ventures has gotten a hold of a print of "Space Warriors 2000" and has plans to possibly release it to DVD. Only one problem, the print has deteriorated to a point where it is no longer of any quality for such a release. Being that there would be both time and money issues in restoring SW2000 Spectrum is wavering on their plans.
This is where you come in.
Richard Gladman of the Cyberschizoid blog has engineered a campaign via email and Facebook to let Spectrum see just how much fan support there is for a "Space Warriors 2000" DVD release.

The New ULTRAMAN ZERO Trailer!
Written By: Ken Hulsey
Sources: Youtube / Wikipedia / Avery Guerra
If you are a huge Ultraman geek like I am, than the new trailer for "Ultraman Zero The Movie: Super Deciding Fight! The Belial Galactic Empire" will be right up your ally.
Looks like the folks over at Tsuburaya Productions have pulled out all the stops for this one with some amazing CGI work combined with the traditional 'man in the suit' effects made popular by the studios founding father, Eiji Tsuburaya.
There is some "Pirates of the Caribbean" themed stuff in there that I don't understand, but overall the film looks like the kind of giant monster, or in this case, superhero, free-for-all that we all yearn for.
Her is the skinny on the film from Wikipedia:
Ultraman Zero The Movie: Super Deciding Fight! The Belial Galactic Empire is an upcoming Japanese film in the Ultra Series to celebrate the franchise's 45th anniversary. It serves as a sequel to Mega Monster Battle: Ultra Galaxy Legend The Movie. The film will be directed by Yuichi Abe. The lead character Run (who serves as Ultraman Zero's human form) will be portrayed by Yu Koyanagi, the son of Bro. Tom of the Bubblegum Brothers. Other characters include Run's brother Nao, portrayed by Tatsuomi Hamada and Run's love interest Princess Emerana of Planet Esmeralda, portrayed by actress Tao Tsuchiya. The film will also feature a new version of Ultraman Belial called Galactic Emperor Kaiser Belia.
Along his journey in the film, Ultraman Zero will come across several allies collectively known as "Ultimate Force Zero" (ウルティメイトフォースゼロ, Urutimeito Fōsu Zero). One is Glenfire (グレンファイヤー, Gurenfaiyā), a free spirited warrior with a soul of burning magma from the Planet of Flames (炎の星, Honō no Hoshi). He wields the Fire Stick (ファイヤースティック, Faiyā Sutikku) as well as control over fire itself. Glenfire was originally the captain of the Pirates of Flames (炎の海賊, Honō no Kaizoku) traveling through space with the Avant-garde (アバンギャルド号, Uchūsen Abangyarudo Gō). The other is Mirror Knight (ミラーナイト, Mirā Naito), a being from the 2-D Planet of Mirrors (鏡の星, Kagami no Hoshi) who was originally charged with the duty to protect Planet Esmeralda from the attacks of Kaiser Belial. In addition to several mirror-based powers, he also performs the Mirror Knife (ミラーナイフ, Mirā Naifu) finisher attack. In addition to these living allies, Ultraman Zero meets the Jean-bird (ジャンバード, Janbādo), a spaceship with artificial intelligence from Planet Esmeralda that is passed down through the planet's royal family. It can transform into a humanoid robot that Nao can control called the Jean-bot (ジャンボット, Janbotto) by shouting "Jean Fight!" (ジャンファイト!, Jan Faito!). Jean-bot is armed with the Jean Blade (ジャンブレード, Jan Burēdo) on his right arm and the giant Battle Ax (バトルアックス, Batoru Akkusu). He can also execute the Beam Emerald (ビームエメラルド, Bīmu Emerarudo) finisher attack.
Kaiser Belial also gains two commanders to work under him in the film to control his empire: Iaron (アイアロン, Aiaron), who takes pride in his steel body, and Darkgone (ダークゴーネ, Dākugōne). All of them have control over robots called Legionoids (レギオノイド, Regionoido). The Legionoids come in an Alpha-type which is geared with a red drill for land combat and a Beta-type geared with a large bazooka for space combat.
All of the new characters in the film are based on the protagonists and antagonists of the Tsuburaya Productions television programs: Fireman, Mirrorman, and Jumborg Ace.
Since that info comes from Wikipedia, I can't say for sure if it is 100% accurate, but it sure sounds cool!As was the case for most of the most recent entries into the "Ultraman" series, there is no word on any American release plans, either theatrically or domestically , for this one, so you should start looking for the Chinese DVD release at your favorite Anime shop beginning next summer.

Former Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi Lends Voice To New Ultraman Movie
Source: Reuters
What is the former leader of one of the world's economic super-powers, the nation of Japan, qualified to do after he has retired from public service? Apparently become the leader of the "Ultraman" planet Nebula M78, that's what!
Indeed, former Japanese prime minister Junichiro Koizumi, has been cast as the voice of "Ultraman King", the respected leader of the Ultraman clan in "Mega Monster Battle: Ultra Galaxy Legend The Movie"
A spokesman for Tsuburaya Productions reports, "We considered many people that might be able to play this crucial role, but we thought the only person that could really have the presence of Ultraman King, who brings together the clan, would be Mr. Koizumi, who once headed the state."
Ultimately, it was Koizumi's son, 28-year-old Japanese cabinet member, Shinjiro Koizumi, who talked the 67-year-old into taking the part.
"(My son) Shinjiro said I should be in it, that he liked it when he was a kid," Koizumi noted in a recent TV interview. "He said it's not related to politics so it should be okay."
Director Koichi Sakamoto's "Mega Monster Battle: Ultra Galaxy Legend The Movie" will feature several of the different incarnations of the "Ultraman" character, including the original Ultraman, Ultra Seven and Ultraman Mebius in a battle against a virtual 'who's-who' of the long-running series classic monsters, literally 100 in all.
The film is being produced as a joint collaboration of Tsuburaya Productions and Warner Bros (Japan).

Only in Japan would an advertising agency opt to use a parody of two of the countries greatest pop-culture icons, "Ultraman" and "Godzilla", to sell a charcoal air freshener for refrigerators.
Such an add is currently running on Japanese TV.
The main characters in the commercial, human and otherwise, are obvious spoofs of characters from Tsuburaya's long running "Ultraman" TV series. The giant super heroes adversary in the spot is a fire-breathing monster, who loosely looks like "Godzilla" (remember Toho has been going law suite crazy as of late), with Japanese writing on it's torso that translates as “smelly”.
I don't know if using a giant monster themed add would make me want to buy a charcoal air freshener for my fridge or not, but it is good for a laugh or two.

Japan's Greatest Hero, "Ultraman", Coming Soon To An Electrical Box Near You!

The city of Sukagawa in the prefecture of Fukashima, Japan, has come up with a rather odd way to pay homage to one of it's local heroes, famed special effects man, Eiji Tsuburaya. This strange tribute to the man who helped revolutionise the island nation's film industry, and also helped to create some of the world's greatest monsters, Godzilla, Mothra, Rodan and King Ghidorah (not Gamera though), comes in the form of painting the likeness of the superhero, "Ultraman" (created by Tsuburaya in 1966) on the side of local electrical transformer boxes.
This may seem as strange to us westerners, I would kinda be like putting the image of "Batman" on telephone poles to pay tribute to Bob Kane, but in Japan such an act is quite an honor. Come to find out, these transformer boxes are on just about every corner in Sukagawa, so the "Ultraman" images are literally all over the place.
About "Ultraman":
Ultraman (ウルトラマン, Urutoraman?) is a fictional character featured in tokusatsu, or "special effects" television programs in Japan. Ultraman made his debut in the tokusatsu SF/kaiju/superhero TV series, Ultra Q: Ultraman: Special Effects Fantasy Series, a follow-up to the television series Ultra Q. The show was produced by Tokyo Broadcasting System and Tsuburaya Productions, and was broadcast on Tokyo Broadcasting System (TBS) from July 17, 1966 to April 9, 1967, with a total of 39 episodes (40, counting the pre-premiere special that aired on July 10, 1966).
About Eiji Tsuburaya:
Eiji Tsuburaya (born Eiichi Tsumuraya) on July 7, 1901 – died January 25, 1970, in Sukagawa, Fukushima) was the Japanese special effects director responsible for many Japanese science-fiction movies, including the Godzilla series.
In 1963 Tsuburaya started his own special effects laboratory, and later that year founded Tsuburaya Productions. In 1966 alone, this company aired the first 'monster' series for television, Ultra Q beginning in January, followed it with the highly popular Ultraman in July, and premiered a comedy-monster series, Booska, the Friendly Beast in November. Ultraman became the first live-action Japanese television series to be exported around the world, and spawned the Ultra Series which continues to this day.
Many of you may not know that "Ultraman" is the third most popular character icon world-wide, based on licenses and merchandise sales, behind only Mickey Mouse and Snoopy.
