For those of you who know me well, the fact that I'm going a little off track with this article should come as no surprise. Along with being a big fan of sci fi and monster films, I am also a big fan of alternative music. My love for bands like "The Cure" and "Depeche Mode" stem back from my high school days back in the 80s.
Being a fan of music like this, I have been really excited about a lot of new bands that have appeared over the last half decade. Bands like "CSS", "The Kaiser Chiefs" and "MGMT" have really sparked my interest in music again. Frankly I didn't much care for the music of the 90s, with a few exceptions. These new bands sound, in my opinion, more like evolved 80s bands....and I honestly love their sound.
Today I want to talk about the band "Yeah Yeah Yeahs" and their song "Heads Will Roll", which has a video that is horror inspired, so it kinda fits the genre of Monster Island News.
Sometimes you here a song and it just 'sticks'. You hear it once and you immediately want to hear it again. Such is the case with the latest single from the New York based indie alternative rockers the "Yeah Yeah Yeahs", featuring lead singer Karen O, drummer Brian Chase, and guitarist Nick Zinner, entitled "Heads Will Roll."
Honestly the song is dark, yet upbeat, and the lyrics are highly addictive. What really drives the song home are the vocals of the mesmerising Karen O, who really sounds like a modern Siouxsie Sioux of Siouxsie & the Banshees. It doesn't hurt that she is easy on the eyes as well.
The music video for "Heads Will Roll" should be right up the alley for horror movie fans. The clip features a wolf man, who appears in the guise of Michael Jackson, that ultimately turns on his audience, and the band itself, and rips everyone to shreds. The violence is "G" rated, with blood replaced by confetti and streamers, but you will get the point. At the end of the video the band members are shown in pieces with Karen O's severed head still singing.
I honestly don't know if the clip is a tribute to, or a parody of, Michael Jackson's "Thriller" video. In that clip, you may remember, that Jackson himself turns into a werewolf, thus the connection here.
Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Heads Will Roll - Lyrics
Off with your head
Dance until you're dead
Heads will roll
Heads will roll
Heads will roll
Heads will roll
On the floor
Glitter on the wet streets
Silver over everything
The river's all wet
You're all cold
Dripping with alchemy
Shiver stop shivering
The glitter's all wet
You're all chrome
The men cry out
The Girls cry out
The men cry out
Oh no
Off with your head
Dance until you're dead
Heads will roll
Heads will roll
Heads will roll
Heads will roll
On the floor
Looking glass
Take the past
Shut your eyes
Mirror lies
Glitter on the wet streets
Silver over everything
The glitter's all wet
You're all chrome
You're all chrome
Off with your head
Dance until you're dead
Off with your head
Dance until you're dead
Off with your head
Dance until you're dead
Okay, granted the lyrics aren't on the level with a "Rush" song, but they are catchy, and I guarantee that you will be singing them all day.
