Isn't it funny when history repeats itself? Twenty-five years ago songs from
anime series, "
Macross" were monopolizing the top ten singles chart in Japan. The original songs from the show, sung by Mari
Iijima (as Lynn
Minmay), made a lasting impact on that countries music industry and pop culture that lasts til this very day. In fact, Lynn
Minmay (despite the fact that she was a fictional character) was as popular a pop star in Japan as Madonna was in America.
Now fast-forward to 2008, where once again music from a
Macross series is climbing the charts. The ending theme song, "Diamond Crevasse", from the second episode of the latest
Macross series, "
Macross Frontier", entered the
Oricon singles chart at No.3 this week. The song, composed by
Yokko Kanno and performed by the series updated version of
Minmay, Sheryl Nome, who is voiced by
May'n, has become an instant classic. Likewise the shows opening theme, "Triangular,"(Also composed by
Kanno and sung by
Maaya Sakamoto) also debuted at No.3 upon its release in April.
Plot Summary From
Wikipedia:
The series celebrates the 25
th anniversary of the original Super Dimension Fortress
Macross TV series (1982~1983), and is chronologically subsequent to
Macross 7 (1994~1996). This third TV series introduces Earth's latest main variable fighter, the VF-25 Messiah and a new spaceship called the
Macross Frontier, but retains the signature space opera theme constant to all series set in the
Macross Universe (which intertwines musical numbers with fast-paced variable fighter combat). Two separate
manga adaptations have been running in
Shonen Ace and Comp Ace, since February 2008 and April 2008 respectively.
The series features the 25
th Colonial Fleet, dubbed the
Macross Frontier, en route near the galactic center. The fleet is very large and it contains both humans and their
Zentradi allies, so many of its vessels appear to merge more metallic Human designs with organic
Zentradi aesthetics. On the
Macross timeline, the story is set on the year 2059, 47 years after the original Super Dimension Fortress
Macross & 13 years after
Macross 7.
During a mission to an unexplored asteroid belt, a reconnaissance New U.N.
Spacy (N.U.N.S.) VF-171 is destroyed by extremely powerful and fast
insectoid biomechanical alien
mecha known as the "
Vajra", which immediately begin their attack on the rest of the fleet. Not being able to stop the new enemy threat, the N.U.N.S. Colonial Defense Forces authorize the deployment of a Civilian Military Provider organization called S.M.S., which utilizes the new VF-25 Messiah variable fighter to destroy the alien menace.
