2017-07-06, Vacation 2017, Day 3: Astrid Lindgren's World, Part 1

After a wet night, we woke up to a warm and sunny day. Perfect weather for visiting the theme park Astid Lindgren's World. Situated on the north-western outskirts of Vimmerby (exactly opposite the camping site), it was most easily reached by the ring road - but that detour was nothing to talk about in such outstanding summer weather!

The first thing thatmeets the eye is Blomgren's British Petrol station, which seems like taken directly out of the 50s or so.

A view up the street from the entrance.

I am not sure what this building is supposed to depict, but the paramedics seem to have their base there.

Pippi's House.

Pippi's fathers ship (not really a ship, this one, but...)

Some pics from the harbour.

A south sea island.

Some ferry fun.

I shall continue this in another post.

2017-07-05, Vacation 2017, Day 2: Vimmerby

As soon as we had checked in at Björkbackens Camping on the outskirts of Vimmerby, we drove into town to have a look around.

We parked not for from Vimmerby Church (where Astrid Lindgren is buried), walked right past it to the central square where something vaguely reminded us of that famous author's writings. 😏

Below you can see Anna and Lea having fun with a mini verion of a farm house from 'All of Us Children in Bulderby'.

Furtjher down is the Town Hall with the tourist office, and my family playing around with the bronze memorial to Astrid Lindgren aæso situated in the town square.

Back at the camping site, we set up for outdoor supper.

We had a rather rainy night, but slept safely in the camping trailer. We even had the electrical heater on, as summer nights in Småland are not all that hot.

Vacation 2016 - Day 14, Part 2: The Road to Carcassonne, Take 2: A61 Cathar Memorial

When driving on the A61 from Narbonne to Carcassonne, we stopped for lunch at the Aire de Peche Loubat, which turned out to provide an unexpected experience.

From the picnic area we could see some strange shapes on the hill, so after eating, we investigated.

When looking at the first sculpture, three things caught my eye:

  1. moyen age (middle ages)
  2. croisade (crusade)
  3. 1209

Colour me interested!

And here: La tragedie cathare (the cathar tragedy)

Montsegur and 1244

I should have taken pics from the front of those strange 'towers' - as I have found they are a sculpture called 'The Cathar Knights' by Jacques Tissinier:

After leaving the rest area, heading for Carcassonne, we passed a couple of castles.

Next up is the city of Carcassonne, and of course I knocked myself out taking pictures of that marvellous place!
