Renedra American Church, Part 1.

The fever mists are slowly beginning to clear from my brain, and I've decided to do something about some of the many terrain projects I have bought stuff for over the years.

First up, my plastic Renedra Church. I wanted to use it for Von unaussprechlichen Kulten and Strange Aeons, back when I had finished painting 2 cults, but as I went through the parts on the sprues, one vital piece was missing.

Renedra sent me a replacement PLUS a sprue full of headstones, which I think is VERY good customer service - but the delay meant that I got my butterfly mind set on other subjects.

Now I've finally started assembling the kit!

It is a bit fiddly to get the side walls and gables aligned at 90 degrees right angles - I used one of the roof sides to align them against.

When I dryfitted the roof plates, I couldn't get a good fit. There are two of these 'tabs' on each side wall, meant to support corresponding tabs on the underside of the roofs, but in my case they prevented the roofs from sitting correctly on the building - so had to be removed.

Below is the same wall with tab(s) removed.

There are a few peculiarities to the kit - nothing that can't be overcome by the seasoned modeller, but I wouldn't recommend this kit for kids.

Example:

Renedra has opted to do the church bell in two halves.

Nothing wrong with that - BUT, why havent they made it a 'real' bell, then, instead of this pearshaped lump that results from assembling the 2 halves?

Another example:

The bell tower is made of four side pieces and a floor.

Nothing wrong with that, per se, but I had to put the roof/spire base in place and twirl a rubber band around the construction for the glue to cure, otherwise I could not be sure that the roof would fit after the glue had settled.

And, no, I couldn't glue the roof/spire base in place at the same time, as the bell has to hang from a rod inside the bell tower.

The plastic used for the kit seems the same as used for GW's building sets; it's prone to warping, and as you can see below, I had to put some weight on the front of the tower to make it connect with the roof pieces while the glue settles.

Conclusion so far:

It's a nice kit, with good texture and details, and I'm sure the  end result will be very good. The kit, although simple, is not for absolute beginners in the art of model building, but I think it will be worth the extra effort to get things to fit right.

I shall continue, and probably finish, the build tomorrow, and I shall, of course, round it off with part 2 of this little installment.

A Ghoul , Just in Time for Attic Attack.

A bit late, I know - but here are some pics of a Ghoul I readied for Attic Attack II:

I am very pleased with the way he turned out. There may be a small painting error or two, but all-in-all I think he looks very... nice?

I had to finish him so I could use him as the leader of one of my ghoul (Mantic zombies) units - but he should also see action in PSZ, Strange Aeons/VuK, and probably Gothic Horror settings, too!

It's a very old Citadel sculpt, and with this one I have now finished painting the contents of thjat blister (took me just about 20 years).

I have another blister of those guys, and I hope to paint them a bit faster ;o)

Below, you'll find a couple of additional shots.

More Zombies.

Finished this second batch today. Bases are awful - the highlighting colour is too thinned down to use for a proper drybrush, so I may apply a Devlan Mud wash to get some definition back into the texture.

The blood looks a bit too much like wet red paint in this picture - not quite so much IRL.

The shamblers will - like everything else I do these days - serve multiple purposes; Pike & Shot AND Zombies. Dead walk Again, Ghouls for GoB28, zombies/ghouls/cannibals for WWWII, CROM!, Pulp Alley, Strange Aeons, and Von Unaussprechlichen Kulten, etc.

Some More Coven Pics

Well, I thought I might as well show the minis I added to the Coven line-up:

Another girl from Dark Sword Miniatures, one from Black Cat Bases, an unfortunate victim from Pulp Figures, and an old Grenadier demon.

Been busy with the greenstuff, also on the Witch and the Cauldron.

Below is a pic of two Heresy minis that are natural enemies.

I've had the big howler assembled and partially greenstuffed for quite a while, but I took the  opportunity to get the last gaps stuffed right away.

I ALWAYS get too much greenstuff mixed, and  you may have spotted an armnature for a tentacle or giant snake (I'm not quite sure, yet), that I'm going to sculpt with leftovers.

It'll be my first attempt at sculpting a wargame mini, and it will probably take a long time to get done, slowly building up the shape with little blobs of putty.

Who shall reign supreme in the Carpathians?
 Stay tuned for more...

It's Heresy, I tell ya!

Received this little order today:

Witch with Cauldron
Overlord
Vampire in Man-Bat Form

As per my self-inflicted restraints, I'll have to push these forward to get painted next. I do have a mini on my pain(t) station atm, though, that I need to finish first, and I have kind of a commission incoming, so I may have to delay them a bit.

I am pretty sure, I already have another piece of the man-bat, but its whereabouts elude me at the moment, and I need it painted for a cunning plan... Besides, who couldn't find use for an extra badass vampire, should it surface somewhen..?

Fishman Revisited

I had to go back and do a little work on the mouth of this abomination - and flock the base.

Nothing else to say, really...

Ready for Battle: Dagonite Cult for VuK.

As promised yesterday, here is my Dagonite Cult:

Composition, from left to right:

Cultist, Cultist, Cultist, Fishman, High Priest (Magus), Fishman, Cultist, Cultist.

Unlike the Cult de Ghouls, these are going to have quite a few peashooters, as most of then can have a .22 handgun for free. I may decide to give the guy with the revolver a .45 handgun for that extra punch. Then, when the opposition rushes in, hopefully they have been softened up for the Fishmen to rip apart.

I think this is my first 'unit/warband' ever to be based entirely on steel washers. Looking good, methinks!

The next project for VuK is a Death Cult, but it requires bashing about and rebasing some old minis, and I have a couple of other minis that I want to paint for the LPC at the LAF (and Stranghe Aeons), so it will have to wait a couple of weeks at least.

Now, I'll go back to the previous post to get that colour break-down done...

Oh, and I've spotted that I have forgotten to flock the base of the black-robed Fishman. Must mend later today!

Dagonite High Priest.

Finished this guy earlier today. I had planned to get him ready yesterday, but the current events in Ukraine had me turm my attention to the TV much of the day.

It's Pulp Figures' Weird Menace Weird Villains 01 'Crimson Scorpion'.

I painted him to match my Pulp Figures Evil Hooded Minions, that I use for cultists, so that I can use him as High Priest for my VuK Dagonite cult (which is now complete; line-up will follow tomorrow)

I'm too tired to write the colour breakdown right now, shall do tomorrow.

EDIT:

Colours used:

Primer: Black

Hood/Robes:

  1. VOC Worm Purple
  2. VOC Worm Purple + white 2:1
  3. VOC Worm Purple + white 1:1
  4. VOC Worm Purple + white 1:2

'Armour':

  1. OC Shadow Grey + black 1:2
  2. OC Shadow Grey + black 1:1
  3. OC Shadow Grey + black 2:1

Gold:

  1. VGC Charred Brow
  2. OC Burnished Gold with black (dark mix)
  3. VGC Polished Gold
  4. OC Burnished Gold + OC Mithril Silver

 Skin:

  1. Mix of OC Bestial Brown and OC Dwarven Flesh  1:3
  2. Old GW Dwarven Flesh
  3. Mix of DF and old GW Elf Flesh
  4. Elf Flesh

Sash and Shoes:

  1. OC Scaly Green
  2. OC Jade Green
  3. OC Vile Green
  4. OC Vile Green + white 1:1 (?)
That should be it. Quite simple, actually, but I'm rather pleased by the way he turned out. Thepurple makes him blend in with  the Evil Hooded Minions (cultists), and the green ties a connection to the Fishmen.

Now, I have to fill out the rosters, and find a day for the first game.

Can't wait - but as the gardening season is slowly approaching (and I have been set back 14 days by my strained ankle in tidying up the vegetable garden after felling trees), the weather is going to be a deciding factor when finding time for gaming.

Still, I hope to get a game up somewhen here in March!

Ready for Battle: Cult de Ghouls for VuK.

I got the last 2 minis ready for my first finished VuK cult today.

Although it's meant for a game set in the 1920-30's, all the minis can easily be fitted into a game of Gothic Horror (some of them were, indeed, designed for Vampire Wars by West Wind Productions).

The culprits are, from left to right:

Cultist, Degenerate 'Vladimir', Ghoul, Ghoul, Ghoul King (Magus), Giant Vermin, Ghoul, Degenerate 'The Rat-Man', Giant Vermin.

The cult has little ranged punch, but up close and personal, they get really nasty.

I'll see if I can make a Lurker list based on the cult for our next game of Strange Aeons - could be really fun to see how they would fare against Treshold!

A Very Old Ghoul...

I suddenly realized that i had forgotten to flock the base on this.

Thus, I had to finish it before it could join my Cult de Ghouls.

It is an old Citadel sculpt from the late 80's or early 90's.

I painted it several years ago, so I don't remember the exact colours used; I do think, though, that the skin was painted using CdA Field Grey, then built up with white added.

I have now finished 3 of 4 ghouls from that blister (and I kinda regret not to buy more back then - but, heck, there's a lot of nice sculpts to choose from).

Evil Cultist... well, Cossack...

Finished painting and basing this bugger today.

He's the last model I needed for my Cult de Ghouls for VuK (which, apparently, originates somewhere in the Carpathians), and he is going to pass as a cultist.

The last couple of days I have been able to sit normally without my foot starting to throb. Thus, I have been able to slab on a bit of paint, and I have finished these two:

They are Victorian/Gothic Horror 'Evil Henchmen' from West Wind Productions Classic Vampire Wars range, but for now I'll use them as inbred degenerates for my VuK Cult de Ghouls (and maybe for Strange Aeons Lurkers, too).

Another Giant Vermin.

I finished painting this little critter (actually the size of a St. Bernard). I didn't want to post it in the LPC, as it would be the second in a row, but as I need it for my Cult de Ghouls for VuK, I had to get it done while I still had the Secret Fire running in my veins.

As you can see, I painted a more realistic snout on this one (and I actually also redid the snout on the first one to match).

Primer: Black

Fur

  1. VOC Shadow Grey + Black, 1/3 or so
  2. VOC Shadow Grey + Black
  3. VOC Shadow Grey + Black, 3/1 or so.

2014-02-19, Lovecraftian Painting Circle: Giant Vermin.

Got this little blighter finished today.

Pic seems a little over-exposed (or just taken with too much light, which I don't understand, as I used my usual setup).

The mini is a Warhammer Quest plastic rat.

I realized after painting it, that the snout should have been all pinkish, and not black, I may correct it alongside painting the next one, which I hope to finish by the weekend.

When the second rat is done, I only have to paint 2 degenerates, and I'll have the Cult de Ghouls I've planned for Von unaussprechlichen Kulten. I then still have to put a little more paint on the Cult Leader for the Dagonites (Pulp Figures Crimson Scorpion) that got stalled some time ago.

I expected to finish my Death Cult second, but the LPC is still running, and it was a great oportunity to get some monsters painted up.

Primer: Black

Fur

  1. OC Graveyard Earth + Black
  2. OC Gracveyard Earth
  3. OC Graveyard Earth + OC Bleached Bone

Skin

  1. OC Tanned Flesh
  2. OC Tanned Flesh + OC Pallid Flesh
  3. OC Pallid Flesh

Eyes and Teeth

  • WZ Legionaire Flesh

2014-02-07, Lovecraftian Painting Circle: Ghoul.

Finished this today (it had been sitting around primed for several years), for the LPC at the LAF.

Primer:

  • Black

Skin:

  1. F Moss Shade
  2. F Moss Shade + F Moss
  3. F Moss
  4. F Moss + F Moss Light
  5. F Moss Light
  6. F Moss Light + White

Loin cloth:

  1. OC Graveyard Earth + OC Bronzed Flesh
  2. OC Graveyard Earth + more OC Bronzed Flesh
  3. OC Graveyard Earth + even more OC Bronzed Flesh

Eyes and teeth

  • WZ Legionnaire Flesh.

I have begun painting the Malifaux Killjoy figure to use as a Ghoul King, also using Foundry Moss, but keeping him in the darker shades, and thus my Cult de Ghouls for VuK will soon be ready to square off against a Dagonite Cult.

Can't wait to try this spin-off of Strange Aeons (and the ghouls will be very useful against Treshold, too!!)

More Hooded Minions!

I finished rebasing these two culprits from slottas to steel washers yesterday:

They were painted some years ago, but only rebased just now - and with these, all my painted minions are now ready to join a new Pulp Alley League, as soon as I get the Pulp Figures Crimson Scorpion painted in matching colours!

The next Pulp Figure I'm going to paint is Short Round of Temple of Doom fame; Bob Murch does a nice mini that is not dressed exactly as Short Round in the film, but he is close enough to use as such.

When we played our first Pulp Alley game, we needed a 'clever child' for one of the Plot Points, and I think it's fair to say that Short Round fits the bill for that!

I have nor morepainted  minis to rebase right now, but I'm sure I'll stumble on more over the next months....

Another Hooded Minion.

This pic got a little blurred, I don't know why,
as the lights and camera settings
were the same as for the other two
Finished this yesterday:

It's going to be used for as well a new Pulp Alley league I'm planning, as as a Lurker in Strange Aeons, and for a cult in Von Unaussprechlichen Kulten, which latter I'm going to get as soon as I have my new credit cards (I lost my wallet and got all my cards cancelled - before I knew that the wallet was going to turn up again with all contents intact).

I didn't notice until after taking the pic that the paint
has chipped on the edge of the base.
I'll mend that right away!
Don't mess with this guy!
