Sales Force Tower -- May 27, 2017

The building with the slanted roof is the Leaning Tower of San Francisco, the Millennium Tower. at Fremont and Mission. Behind it is the nearly complete Sales Force Tower, which is now the tallest building in San Francisco. The two cranes make it resemble a Dalek.

Removing a Curve -- January 18, 2014

I went to the post office at lunch time and noticed that a crew was removing the curve that led from Fremont Street to Market Street.  Earlier in the week, they removed the old switch at First and Market.  These were the sole remains of the loop that used to allow streetcars to serve the East Bay Terminal.

Train Station #61 -- July 7, 2013

Los Angeles Union Station, now called Los Angeles Union Passenger Terminal, which opened in 1939, was one of the last union stations built in the United States. We visited it in July, 2011 on our way to Angels Flight. We got off the Gold Line on an open platform. We saw heavy-rail commuter trains on other tracks. The lower levels reminded me of a cleaner version of the old East Bay Terminal. The head house was beautiful, as seen in this front view.

Transbay Terminal -- April 20, 2013

Looking down towards Fremont and Mission, where the new Transbay Terminal is under construction.  The lighter sidewalk on Fremont marks the tunnel under the street.  I took the photo yesterday.

Today the weather was beautiful.  We went downtown and walked up to Macy's.  We had lunch at Boudin's.

Ghost Sign #9 -- July 21, 2012

This ad for Heines' Tobacco on Howard near Second became more visible after they tore down the ramps from the East Bay Terminal.  I took the photo on 15-August-2011.

Ghost Sign #8 -- June 22, 2012

The E Jordan Brookes Company is still in business, but not in this building on Howard near Second.  The sign has been more visible since they tore down the ramps from the East Bay Terminal, but someone has stuck a big For Lease sign on top of it.  I took the photo on 15-August-2011.

Ghost Sign #1 -- November 23, 2011

A Hills Bros Coffee ghost sign is visible on Fremont Street between Mission and Howard.  It has been easier to see since the East Bay Terminal got torn down.  Be sure to click on the image for a larger view.

I took the photo on 19-November-2011.

Things were relatively quiet at work today.  I was able to leave early.

Train Station #37 -- August 9, 2011

Los Angeles Union Station, which opened in 1939, was one of the last union stations built in the United States. We visited it in July on our way to Angels Flight. We got off the Gold Line on an open platform. We saw heavy-rail commuter trains on other tracks. The lower levels reminded me of a cleaner East Bay Terminal. The head house was beautiful, as seen in this hall, which was blocked off from the public.

East Bay Terminal Being Demolished #6 -- March 18, 2011

I took this photo of some of the remaining streetcar tracks on the ramp of the East Bay Terminal as it was being demolished on 28-February-2011. I was looking east from First Street.

It rained very hard today. A water spout appeared off the Sunset District. A tornado hit Santa Rosa.

East Bay Terminal Being Demolished #5 -- February 22, 2011

Today they were tearing down the ramps south of Howard Street between First and Second. The building on the west side of First between Mission and Howard is now torn down.

As I was heading home, I saw Larry the Shoe Shine Guy was out of the hospital. He said he is feeling better.

East Bay Terminal Being Demolished #4 -- January 24, 2011

Today I looked down Howard Street from Third and could see all the way to the bay. The ramp across Howard between First and Second got demolished over the weekend. Here is what is left on the south side. On the north side there is only rubble. Where the main building of the East Bay Terminal stood, they are digging into the basement.

Jack LaLane died in the prime of his life. As I walked down Howard, saw a Channel 5 van outside of the LaLane studio. A camera lady was getting something out of the side door. Mike Sugerman came out of the studio and shouted something like "It's his great-great grand nephew." Actually the studio was started by his great nephew. I saw the story after I got home.

East Bay Terminal Being Demolished #3 -- January 12, 2011

I took a walk by the East Bay Terminal to see what was left. These girder structures stood on First and Fremont Streets, but most of the building in between was gone. Part of the ramp before the crossing at Howard between First and Second was gone.

It was warmer today.

East Bay Terminal Being Demolished #2 -- December 21, 2010

It was cold and windy at lunch time, but I had to take a walk by the East Bay Terminal to see what was left. The big red crane was dropping a wrecking ball on the upper floor. The ground shook as I walked by on Fremont Street.

Door #6 -- December 12, 2010

Here is an entrance to the East Bay Terminal on 10-December-2010. The ramp over First Street had just been demolished.

Alley #14 -- December 8, 2010

Looking down Natoma from Second Street at the exit ramp from the East Bay Terminal, which was being demolished on 01-December-2010.

We had heavy rain today.

Train Station #29 -- December 3, 2010

Today they started to demolish the main building of the East Bay Terminal, which opened in 1939 to serve the electric trains of the Key System, Southern Pacific's Interurban Electric Railway, and the interurban Sacramento Northern.

I took the photo on 10-August-2010.

East Bay Terminal Being Demolished -- October 30, 2010

The ramp across Fremont Street is now an open air structure and they are tearing down the trainshed. I was surprised that the street and the sidewalk were open last week while the structure above Fremont was being demolished. I took this photo on 28-October-2010.

The Rangers beat the Giants 4-2. I'm not so happy, but the Giants almost came back. Tomorrow they'll do better.

East Bay Terminal Ramps Demolished -- August 26, 2010

I went for a walk down Howard Street today and I thought the block between Beale and Main looked awfully bright. Then I noticed that heavy equipment was working in the corner of the block where the Temporary Transbay Terminal sits. Then I realized that the ramp across the street was gone. This is the end on the north side, leading towards the East Bay Terminal. I wonder if those are ends of tracks on the green beams. Maybe the tracks were just paved over when the Key System trains were abandoned.

It was much cooler today. I'm happy.

East Bay Terminal Closed -- August 10, 2010

I took a walk by the new Temporary Transbay Terminal and saw a bunch of people squinting with confusion at the signs. I was looking at a big bus map covered with multicolored lines and said to the man next to me "That's easy to read and digest." He said "Do you feel like a tourist in a foreign country trying to figure out where to go?" Then I walked by the now-closed East Bay Terminal and took this photograph.

East Bay Terminal Last Days -- August 6, 2010

Today was the last work day for the East Bay Terminal, which opened in 1939 to serve the electric trains of the Key System, Southern Pacific's Interurban Electric Railway, and the interurban Sacramento Northern. I took this photo of the tower on 07-July-2010. The tower operator used the N-X (Enter-Exit) interlocking system to control the track switches for trains of the three companies.
