Bolt Action - War of the Worlds

Some enjoyable Bolt Action games of late and with a number of long train journey's got me thinking about how I might adapt them to cover my War of the Worlds Invasion Earth forces.

I much prefer knowing one or two rule sets really well, which keeps games flowing rather than the constant picking over rule sets, so I thought I would have a crack at tweaking Bolt Action and adding in elements from the original Martian Empire Rules.

Where possible I have looked to keep to the main rules for Bolt Action.
A few more play tests are required but feed back was pretty positive given it's first out with a couple of regular Bolt Action players.

On with the game - Crown Forces are looking to hold the line on the approaches to Winchester.

The British line, the cream of the British army, heavy cavalry, lancers and guns in emplacements. Surely this would be enough against the invader.

Red weed had already started to creep into the eco-system, before the war machines were seen on the horizon, Fighting Machines, Handling Machines and smaller scout machines marched forward.

A fighting machine towered over a column of refugees as the guard rushed words to distract the tripod.

As the Martian raised its heat ray the heavy batteries let fly from behind the wooded ridge supressing the machine long enough for the column to stumble on.

As the local yeomanry advanced the fast moving scout walkers scuttled forwards wading into the valiant militia as they attempted to form up. The handling machine turned to face the tide of humanity trudging down the road.

In a rare victory on the day the life guards caught a unit of Martians outside of their protective hoods, cutting them down before they in turn were wiped out by the fighting machines heat ray.

The invaders pressed on as the Royal Artillery fell backwards having been stripped of their infantry cover.... England was not yet defeated but the invaders would take some stopping.

A good first run out. Some things to ponder before the next game.
  • The Heat Ray needs perhaps a slightly shorter range and when firing at infantry perhaps need the penetration score dropping to stop them all being completely wiped out in a turn.

  • The massed infantry ranks adding additional +1 for each stand beyond 2 felt right, but might need a limit to the number and arc of fire.

  • Artillery worked well at pinning the main tripods several times the main fighting machine was pinned and had to rally/repair themselves to stay in play.

  • Hand to Hand combat needs a slight rework allowing units to fall back rather than simply wiped out, I am thinking the difference between kills, becomes pins and units fall back 12" to keep them on the table.
All in all nice to get these guys back on the table.

Dispatches from the front III

Time to upgrade the blog front page as all the Kickstarter's have now landed.

Just in time for the BBC's adaption of the War of the Worlds, Grey Fox Game's two player card building game landed. Each encounter lasts around an hour and it certainly been the game of the month, although its damned hard for the alien invaders to win although each game came down to the last 4 points.

Talking with fellow board gamers, its good to know that the same mindset stretches across both ends of the hobby when we look to justify the outlay for figures, paint time or board games.
Having played War of the Worlds at least 5 times now in my own mind I have already covered the cost of the game if you measure it in terms of a good meal out or a few pints and a curry.

On the strength of this the War of the Worlds project might get a bit of a make over or at least a couple of bunkers to help protect the earthly defenders.

The models within the Kickstrater are a lovely touch and really bring the game to life, they may even get a lick of paint over the Christmas period.

Meanwhile a couple of days later these fine fellows landed, as with many Kickstarters a number of months late, the will be a great addition to the Elizabethan Zombie Wars.
Although I could have done with swapping the cavalry with more dead villages to plague the land.

Just the fun of putting the damn things together.
I can see the price justification for plastics but having just replaced some of Perry's plastics in the Haiti range as over prolonged game play they have lost bayonets and swords I think I shall be largely sticking with metals.

E-bay has produced some extra reinforcements for the Army of the Witch Queen which should add some more colour to the Army of Darkness Forces..... more on that soon.

Right back to the brushes.... those e-bay packages won't paint themselves.

War of the Worlds: The New Wave

Well that was a nice surprise for a wet Saturday morning Grey Fox Games Kickstarter drops through the door. Fantastic art work and a very professional feel to it. The extra mouse mat playing area was a great add on.

War of the Worlds - The New Wave is a deck building game set several years after the original War of the Worlds invasion.

Having ran my own WOTW's campaign how could I resist this deck building game. The extra-terrestrial invasion is occurring once again, but this time the Martians have arrived on a giant spaceship that lands in Scotland.

During the game, one player commands the alien forces, and the other one leads the plucky Brits. Players purchase action cards as well as Units and Buildings which help with controlling areas of the board. The game comes with some lovely miniatures to replace the card board options.

The main objective of the invaders is to completely annihilate the population of Great Britain, while the opposite side needs to deal enough damage to the Martian army.
Civilians need to be protected and both sides look to look to inflict 30 points of damage.

With 45 minutes playing time perfect for some mid-week gaming.

The Easter - Lead Challange

Easter Bank holiday, 4 days off work, finally warm enough to varnish winters output and a chance to take stock of the recent flurry of purchases thanks to trips to Hammerhead and WMMS.

I have tried to restrict my interests in recent years to certain periods, but as I look over the latest purchases it dawned on my that the Wargames Butterfly has been creeping into my recent purchases.

In no particular order.
  • More for the Water Margin project, with a War Wagon, Carts, Light Cavalry, Infantry and some Chinese Wizards to create a Chinese Frostgrave Faction.
  • A whole bunch of Russian Infantry for Chechnya.
  • Guardians for Lemuria - Just lovely sculpts.
  • Various barricades from Anisty Castings.
  • A Martian Blood pool for when the Human forces cross into Martian territory.
  • A Pool/Oasis for the Ottoman project which is bound to rise up the painting list with Sharp Practice 2 launch in April.

Quite a to do list and with decorating the kitchen and reversing mother nature in the garden on the agenda. I am begining to think I should have stopped at work.

No promises but let's see what can be achieved this weekend.
Good job some of these tasks can be done between coats of paint and allowing glue to dry.

England Invaded - London Attacked... Round 2

The people of London continue to endure the threat of Martian attack, Red weed creeps ever closer clinging to the country lanes and abandoned homes of the nations capital.
Black Smoke hangs in low laying land like a black shroud, but still London fights on.

The resilient Londoners continue to bolster their defences earth works, barricades are thrown up at every junction looking to blunt the advance of the out of world invaders.

London has the advantage of being ringed by rivers. To the south the River Quaggy passes through the borough of Lewisham, before joining the mighty Thames.
It is here that the latest Martian attack thows itself at the human defenders,

The Martian invaders approach  on two fronts, the first force looking to smash it's way through the industrial area covering the approaches to the mail railway line to the capital.
Attacking on two fronts with 2000 points vs the human defenders of 800 this could be the most bloody encounter yet.

Out of the mist advance the the towering sentinals advance the seirens wail "oooohhhh-laaaa" as they sweep towards the burnt out ruins, But the right hand Martian force stutters,  unable to secure a command order.

The militia hidden dug in the factory units and destroyed houses open fire and the latest monsterous creations advance on the valiant garrison. After a bloody fight the handling machines are forced back, their metal claws unable to winkle the defenders from the cellars and roofs.

Finally on the right flank more fight machines appear flanking the factory units and driving head long for the railway embankment and the river beyond.

The Artillery is unmasked and the militia rush to counter the new threat. The Heat Ray strikes the Artillery battery but the crew are able to seek shelter behind their earth works.

A fighting machine is brought down, Artillery shells smash the legs of the fighting machine and rifle fire pours into the Martian driver in his hooded compartment. A valuable morale boster for the human defenders. The Martians retire some what shaken taking their fallen comrade with them.

With another deperate victory the London garrison is bolstered by members of the Queen's Royal Foot (100 pts) who manage to slip through Martian lines as they fell back from Surrey.

With a small encounter in Powys, the initiative is soon to pass to the forces of the Crown, could this valiant defence be the start of a human fight back?

England Invaded - Martian Moves Turn 3

Two months have slipped by since the last outing in the current Martian Empires campaign but the Martian's have not been idle.

The invaders break free from their red weed covered territory into the areas of England currently untouched by the steel claws of the out of world invader. West Glamorgan, Northamptonshire, Suffolk and Cambridgeshire fall to the Martians without a fight, historical cities and and towns that have stood for hundreds of years are razed to the ground, Stowmarket and Cambridge are nothing more than blackened ruins.

Meanwhile the battle lines are drawn in other areas, in the Midlands where the Humans have sufficent troops to hold the Martian invader they form up prepared to stem the Martian advance, will they fight or will they withdraw, pulling the red foe away from their cylinders?

Defence of Powys
700 Martian vs 345 Human

Defence of Staffordshire
600 Martian vs 300 Human
Defence of Cheshire
509 Martian vs 200 Human
Defence of Warwickshire
500 Martian vs 200 Human

The siege of London continues, the occasional scout machine scuttles forward probing the earth works and trenches, however over recent days the hammering from the pits has increased and the unearthly howling can be heard long into the night.
The Martian onslaught is coming.

London
2000 vs 800 - Attacking on two fronts.
The Martians are also attacking the Surrey salient (300 vs 100) but with such a small garrison one suspects the The Queens Royal Foot will have to retire towards the capital if it still stands.

Good news for War of the Worlds Fans...

Spotted this while surfing the web.....
Finally what every WOTW Fan has been waiting for - Good news in deed.

Rejoice, H.G. Wells fans! A War of the Worlds television series is currently in the works.
According to a report over at Broadcast Now, Mammoth Screen (which is owned by the producers of the new Poldark series on ITV) is working on a TV adaptation of Wells’ classic sci-fi novel, and they've brought Peter Harness on board to pen the miniseries.
What’s even more awesome is that the new TV series will stick closely to the original text and time period of the book -- which was first released as a serial in 1897 -- with the Martian invasion taking place in the town of Dorking, Surrey, in Victorian England.
If you’re wondering right now who Peter Harness is, he's the dude who wrote the excellent Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell miniseries that aired earlier this year. He's also penned the Doctor Who episodes “Kill the Moon” and this season’s Zygon two-parter “The Zygon Invasion/The Zygon Inversion,” as well as a couple of Wallander episodes starring Kenneth Branagh. Basically, I think the new series is in good hands.
Production on the ITV adaptation will kick off in early 2017, after the copyright expires in December 2016. Paramount Pictures has held onto the rights of The War of the Worlds for nearly 90 years after first getting their hands on them back in 1926, and there have been two big-screen adaptations. The first movie came out in 1953 and starred Gene Barry and Ann Robinson, while the second film, starring Tom Cruise and directed by Steven Spielberg, hit movie theaters in 2005.
Mammoth Screen managing director Damien Timmer said: “The aftershock of The War of the Worlds can still be felt in popular culture today. The story of a Martian invasion as experienced in Victorian Surrey is a masterpiece. We want this new adaptation to reaffirm H G Wells’ position as one of this country’s most important writers.”

Yorkshire Falls - Campaign Game #7

The last game of the year and it turned out to be a cracker....

Encouraged by their last victory the Human forces pushed on.
Generals Furphy and Dane gave orders to advance on Yorkshire in three flying columns, the Martian invader was already restricted in their capacity to reinforce as their cylinder had been destroyed a few weeks earlier, but being not of human mind and knowing no fear vowed to fight to the death.
Out numbered 2:1 it was always going to be difficult to hold mankind at bay.

The table layout, two of the human columns can be seen, but no Martian is in sight, only the clinging red weed, which was rapidly expanding across the English countryside.

Opting for a very mobile force to counter the artillery of HM land forces, the Martian invader is forced into action as the left hand column brings it's guns to bear, the Martian scutlers, scamper forwards looking to destroy the weaker column before it can become established in the village.

One order to far!!!
The Scout machines are caught in the flank as the local yeomanry line the walls and windows of the nearby village, a savage volley destroy's one metal monster and sends the other back towards the Martian lines.

The Militia advance, but the creatures from Mars stand firm firing their heat rays and launching cannister rounds of the terrible black smoke, the militia waiver but recover their nerve as supporting artillery fire damages a number of the war machines.

Facing advancing infantry on both flanks the Martian smoke projectors fall back to seek shelter on the reverse slop of the hill as more of their number surcum to the rising rifle fire.

Meanwhile for a brief moment the smiles are wiped from the faces of the human commanders as their field artillery look to flank the main Martian force, they stubble into the last Martian force, hidden in an empty farm house, they destroy one of the guns, before they were silenced by shell and bullet.

The final Martian machines are cornered and destroyed....
The north is free from the out of world invader... but the Martian invader is due to take the offensive next, so things could change very rapidly.

2016 is looking like a very busy year.....

Merry Christmas all.

Factories & Ruins..... Fieldworks.

Over the years I have tried to make a concerted effort to only buy terrain that can fit a multitude of periods and these factories and ruins are no exception.

Fieldworks produce some excellent buildings for the money particularly if you like the buildings badly damaged and bombed out, perfect for the final days of Berlin or the great seige of London in the 1880 1st Martian War.....

Some of the casts look a bit rough around the edges and don't take paint well but once complete really do look the part, these are painted by Furphy you can check out more of his work here. http://furphy1914.blogspot.co.uk/

Between £10.00 and £16.00 per building what's not to like.

"Bows and Arrows against the Lightning" - Part 2

With a few weeks before the next England Invaded outing....

Factories continue to produce weopons for the war effort.

Essex Crew and QRF Guns.
The extra heavy guns will have a Fire Factor of 8 within the Martian Empire rules and will be available to purchase at a cost of 160 points.

I have added a couple of limbers to pad out the order....
There is no call for them in the Martian Empire rules but they do look nice on the table...

The final packs of reinforcements for mankind arrived a few days ago.... I found some nice peices in Eureka's ranges which are fit for purpose (more of these later).
I painted up an additional command stand as a taster...

Standing 18mm tall they are largered than the other figures in the collection, but look fine once painted and based.

That's all for now folks....

"Bows and Arrows against the Lightning" - Human Reinforcements

Geoff over at QRF was having a sale.....

I was looking for a couple of items to support the war effort against the Martian invader.
These 60 Pdr's seemed to fit the bill.

Having re-read the book again looking for those minor passages of inspiration the following leaps out at me. "...long wire guns of 95 tons..."
I envisage these to be the type of guns found in the coastal forts such as Dover, removed from their housing and transported by rail to the front lines.

The extra heavy guns will have a Fire Factor of 8 within the Martian Empire rules and will be available to purchase at a cost of 160 points.

The supporting crew and limbers are from Essex Miniatures FPW - German limbers, whilst not technically needed they add to the overall feel for the game and at a later date might consider some supply rules?

Whilst I wait for the PVA to dry, I also finished off a couple of light pieces for the Naval Brigade from Peter Pig's Sudan range - these really are "Bows and Arrows against the lightening"

Quite a difference in size to the newer pieces, HM land forces are outgunned they are not by any means defenseless and given the right weapons, correctly deployed can I am sure inflict crippling losses on the out of world invaders, assuming they get painted of course.

Right back to the brushes.....

Martian Empires - Indirect Artillery Rules

Just a quick posting this evening, after last weeks outing, I thought I would produce some inhouse rules for the use of Indirect Artillery fire for the Martian Empire rule set, due largely to the fact that I picked up these Heliograph teams from Peter Pig several years ago but they have finally made their way to the summit of lead mountain.

So the rules.

I have pointed them out at a cost of 50 points with a limit of 1 per 1000 points being fielded.

They will require an order to send a message from their position to the gun section.
The gun section must have a command element within sight of the heliograph team and be within command radius of the guns to be able to command it to fire.

Heliograph teams are treated like Officers and Characters for the purposes of movement and actions, they may be attached to a unit if charged but will not influence that unit in any way for morale or fire purposes.

Now back to the brushes.....
