Presidential Gaming

Today's President's Day (officially Washington's birthday at the federal level) here in the states. Like many of my fellow Americans I'm disappointed and anxious at the current state of the country. I really miss the time that presidents were public servants and there wasn't a cult built around them. Okay, now that I'm done pining about the state of the country, I'll do what I do best and use the day as an excuse to point folks to relevant previous posts.

If you want to smile, check out the Ash4President videos. Speaking of Ash, he teamed up with Obama in a miniseries and you can find my Cinematic Unisystem stats for President Obama here. If you need something a little more current you can add these 5e stats of President Musk (aka Phony Stark). I can't find Scott Woodward's Drumpf 5e stats anymore so I can't help you if you want to add Cheeto Mussolini to your 5e game. If you're playing Blue Rose though, my friend Tim Brannan did a conversion of him for that system that you can find here. If you need some red hate* mooks for your 5e games, the Sons of Themyscira are perfect. These would be appropriate too.

*That was originally a typo, but it fits perfectly.

October Horror Challenge - Slay (2024)

"Pretty Blood Suckers" was the prompt for Day 15. Though the vamps in the trailer aren't exactly hot, I saw the trailer and had to watch this one.

Plot
When a group of drag queens book a show at the wrong bar, they find themselves out of their element. Soon they and the (mainly) old fashioned and conservative bar patrons find themselves besieged by vampires. Can they put aside their differences and survive the night?

Review
To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar meets From Dusk Til' Dawn in this campy Tubi horror comedy. Like a good drag show, this one isn't high art but its fun as fuck. The movie stars performers from RuPaul's Drag Race and Rupaul's Drag Race UK. It's silly and campy. The queens have some great lines and kept me laughing the whole damn time. I seriously had to pause it a few times. It's obvious the film doesn't have a big budget so a lot of stuff happens off screen. One of my favorite scenes is when all the tough guys in the bar take their guns and try to go outside and fight the vampires. You don't see what happens but the rest of the bar patrons provide some fantastic commentary (even commenting on how silly some of the effects and address the budget issues). Also when the vampires are dusted, it looks glittery, which is a nice nod to drag and I'm assuming Twilight.

While they are performers, they aren't actors and that comes through at times. But again this isn't a masterpiece and the few rough spots here and there don't bring the movie down. There's real heart in this one too. The group initially plans on leaving after their cold reception, but decide to stay when a couple of young LGBTQ+ patrons talk about how excited they are for the show. I also love that Dusty the bartender acts like its an accident they are booked but early on you can tell he's excited for the show.

I want to leave y'all with the line that stuck with me the most, "Hatred is more exhausting than hope."

 Your Game
Drag Queen (1 pt. Quality)

You may not be the Slayer, but you know how to slay.

When dressed in drag you have Appearance 1. If you already have the quality the rating is increased by 1. Because of the performance nature of drag you get a +1 to Art. However, you are the target of conservative culture and gain the Minority drawback.

October Horror Challenge - Ginger Snaps (2000)

"We Are The Weirdos Mister" was the prompt for Day 14. Its pretty obvious my inspiration for this one. I feel like Ginger Snaps shares DNA with movies like The Craft. It's also one of my all time favorite flicks.

Plot
In the Canadian town of Bailey Downs, two sisters, Bridgette and Ginger, are outcasts at school. There lives are changed on the night of Ginger's first period when she is attacked a large creature. Her wounds heal quickly and she starts sprouting strange hair. Brigitte must work to save her sister.

Review
Ginger Snaps is a treat. Katherine Isabelle and Emily Perkins play off each other well and you'd think they were actually sisters. Praise should also given to Mimi Rogers who plays their misguided but loving mother. Lycanthropy as an allegory for girls going through puberty is a brilliant idea. There is some humor with it (hair growing where there wasn't anymore), but not everything is played for laughs. Comparing growing sexual hunger to a physical hunger is a brilliant move. Combine this with the portrayal of sisterhood and female relationships and you have a phenomenal piece of feminist horror.

This movie is now 24 years old, but I think it's just as good today as it was when I originally watched it in college. If you've never watched this horror gem, you should definitely check it out.

 Your Game
If you've seen the sequel then you know what to Brigitte. I'm going to ignore that for the moment and stat out B as she would be at the end of the first movie.

October Horror Challenge - Mr. Crocket (2024)

"For The Kiddos" is the prompt for Day 11. When I originally came up with the prompt I had kid friendly scares in mind. However after seeing the trailer for Mr. Crocket I decided it could be interpreted differently. Mr. Crocket does what he does for the kiddos (in his own twisted way), so it works.

Plot
When her son is taken by a supernatural children's show host, a recently widowed mother attempts to get him back.

Review
Like Piggy, this is based on a short. This one is getting mid reviews, but I thought it was fun. The idea of an evil Mr. Rogers is fantastic. The set designs and effects are creepy and the the retro animation segments add to it. The demonic versions of the PBS-style puppets are great.  Elvis Nolasco is fantastic as Crocket.

This one definitely shows the love of a parent. Summer, the protagonist, goes through Hell to get her son back, despite the fact he was a rude little shit. Now don't get me wrong, I get that Major didn't understand what's going on and his father has died, but he's a menace to this mom and she still fights to get him back.

 Your Game
Mr. Crocket is a lot like Freddy Krueger in a lot of ways so I decided to stat him for Cinematic Unisystem like I did for Freddy. Mr. Crocket's world is a hell dimension but acts like Freddy's dreamlands.

October Horror Challenge - Lisa Frankenstein (2024)

I watched this one Wednesday for the "Reanimated" prompt.

Plot
After the death of her mother, outcast teen Lisa finds herself adapting to things with her new stepmom and stepsister. She soon finds her life turned upside down by a reanimated Victorian corpse.

Review
Written by Diablo Cody, this flick is the directorial debut of Zelda Williams, daughter of the late Robin Williams. Honestly I didn't have strong feelings about this one. There were things I enjoyed and things I didn't. The film is stylish for sure. You can tell Cody wrote it, but it almost feels like a feminist Tim Burton movie. I feel the movie couldn't decide if it wanted to be a quirky romance or body horror. I also couldn't nail down when it was set and didn't care for the ending. Overall I don't think its a bad movie though. The cast did a good job, there were some good laughs, and like I said its a very stylish flick.

While this doesn't come into play at all, according to Cody this movie takes place in the same setting as Jennifer’s Body.
In Your Game
I won't spend the whole challenge making Cinematic Unisystem stats, but they seemed appropriate here. We don't know too much about the creature, though we know he played piano and loves poetry. Perhaps he's an Occult Poet (see Ghosts of Albion for more info).

October Horror Challenge - Here For Blood (2022)

It's October 1st which means its time to start the challenge. Today's prompt is pretty simple: first time watch. I'm already deviating from my plan. Tonight I watched Here For Blood on Tubi.

Plot
Tom is a wrestler trying to make a living. Despite his reluctance he agrees to babysit a 10 year old girl for his girlfriend. He soon finds himself defending the little girl from crazed cultists.

Review

I was happy to find this one Tubi. The premise is fun and the flick is a nice throwback to the 90's action movies I used to watch with my dad. Honestly while there are horror elements to this one, it's heavy on the action. There aren't any huge laughs, but definitely some chuckles. Checked this one out because of the wrestling related plot. Not familiar with the, but two of the cultists are played by indie Canadian wrestlers. The main character is played Shawn Roberts (who I recognized as Wesker from the Resident Evil flicks).

Blood is in the title and this flick is full of it. We're talking Evil Dead 2 levels. Honestly that's not a bad reference. The movie has Evil Dead/Army of Darkness vibes to me. Not necessarily in plot, but just the absurd comedy mixed with horror (and some action). The cult members has some interesting mask. I really liked Spinhead's.

This one isn't high art, but it was fun as Hell. Oh yeah and while it basically repeats the same lines, there's a decaying immortal head voiced by Dee Snider!

In Your Game
Because of the Evil Dead vibes I'm going to stat Tom out for Army of Darkness. The Eternal Ones could be the Dark Ones.

#RPGaDay 2024 - Day 30 and 31

"Person you'd like to game with"

Instead of going with celebrities or historical figures, I'm going to go with some publishing and gamer friends. My dream game would be an old school D&D game ran by Levi Combs of Planet X Games. My fellow players would be Tim Knight, Tim Brannan, Eric Bloat, and the Limitless Adventures cats (Mike and Andy)

"Game or gamer you miss"

Going to go with a game that used to be one of the main focuses of this blog. I'd love to see a generic Cinematic Unisystem core book released. I still have quite a few books in the line and I love them, but I'd love to see new content. This game, Beyond Human, was being written at one point, but never materialized. I don't know if it's ironic or sad that I miss a a game that never came out.

#RPGaDay2024 - Day 14

 "Compelling characters"

I think Cinematic Unisystem games encourage players to make compelling characters. Admittedly there is a mechanical aspect to this. You take Qualities that give you mechanical bonus but often also have roleplaying elements to them. On the flipside you can take Drawbacks to get more points for qualities. These are negative traits that sometimes have mechanical implications but can just influence roleplaying. Additionally it's Drama Point system encourages players to really get into characters (as this can earn them more drama points).

You could make make a similar argument that for original World of Darkness with it's Merits and Flaws.

#RPGaDAY2024 - Day 5

 "RPG with great writing"

While there are many rpg's with great writing, my favorite is probably that found in the cinematic unisystem games. Mechanically the games are well written and easy to pick up. That's not necessarily the main reason I enjoy them though. These books are written in character. The Buffy books are full of that early 2000's hip energy and banter. Army of Darkness is sarcastic and feels like it was written by Ash (if Ash was smart enough to write a rpg book that is).

Y is for Yog-Sothoth

Yog-Sothoth was first introduced in the Evil Dead/Army of Darkness continuity in 2005's Army of Darkness vs Re-Animator. In this series Ash is a special patient of Dr. Herbert West after being tried for the aftermath of his misadventures. West is working with Wilbur Whately to use the Necronomicon to unleash the Old Ones. Yog-Sothoth is named as one of them. The mythos gods would also return in Evil Dead 2: Dark Ones Rising. Giving stats to Yog-Sothoth doesn't make sense, given what it is, it should be noted that as a Dark One, the entity can be damaged by the Kandarian Dagger (known as the Back Stabber in the Army of Darkness core book). I would also rule that the Spear of Destiny, being created from the "flesh" of the Watcher, can also damage it.

If you really want to add Yog-Sothothery to your game, check out this netbook.

W is for the (Deadite) Wiseman

In the Ash and the Army of Darkness series the Wiseman was temporarily possessed by the Kandarian Demon. This happened after he made the mistake of reading the book allowed after helping Ash return to his time. He created a new army of the dead and managed to overpower the forces of Lord Arthur and Duke Henry the Red. After losing his copy of the Necronomicon, he summoned Ash and tried to force him to quest to retrieve the tome. Ash was saved by Sheila and a cult that worshipped him. Eventually they found the tome and forced the demon from his body. Unfortunately it then possessed Sheila...

These stats were created using the official Wiseman and Evil Sheila stats found in the corebook. That's why I am using Wiseman instead of Wise Man and why he is an Evil Human as opposed to a Deadite.

Name: Evil Wiseman
Motivation: Rule the world through use of the Necronomicon

V is for Vladimir Reinhard

Dr. Vladimir Reinhard is the antagonist of Resident Evil: Regeneration. He is a German psychiatrist and the lead doctor at Sunny Meadows Asylum for the Criminally Insane. In the alternate timeline of Regeneration, Ash never traveled to the past, was arrested, declared insane, and sent to Sunny Meadows. Reinhard became intrigued by his stories. He eventually obtained Knowby's diary and the Necronomicon. Using the dark knowledge contained within he summoned evil to the world and created the half-deadites. During the course of the game him becomes a  typical deadite and eventually a more power deadite.

U is for Unusual Weapons

There have been many unusual and improvised weapons used in the Evil Dead franchise. A pencil, a electric knife, a tattoo gun, and even a nail gun have been used. Evil Dead Rise might have the most wince inducing weapon though. In one scene (glimpsed in the red band trailer) a cheese grater is used. I wince cringe a little every time I think about it, which helped me come up with these game states:

A cheese grater does Strength slash/stab damage and requires any human without Mental Problems - Cruelty drawback witnessing it to make a horror check at a -4.

Though brief the scene was so memorable that it inspired BossLogic to create this amazing promo poster for SXSW.

T is for Taker of Souls

The Taker of Souls is an ancient entity known by many names in many cultures. It is essentially a super Deadite. It's only goal is to feed on souls and cause suffering. Once it's completed its ritual, it returns to its home and summons the Abomination.

S is for Savini's Ash

Legendary horror make-up and VFX artist Tom Savini has designed a super goth/emo/edgy version of Ash for Evil Dead: The Game. This is the second version of the skin. The original was a Kickstarter exclusive and can be seen here. This isn't the first time Tom Savini has designed a limited edition skin for an asymmetrical horror game. He previous did so for Friday the 13th. You can see that design and my Cinematic Unisystem stats for it here.

Savini has said the skin was inspired by Edward Scissorhands and the cenobites. I can see that.

I have statted Savini's Ash as a playable hero. Technically he's more powerful than cannon Army of Darkness Ash, but he's got a lot more trauma and social issues.

Instead of being transported to the middle ages by Necronomicon Ex-Mortis this version of Ash was transported to the dimension in which evil itself originated. Exposed to unfathomable horrors within, he became psychologically corrupted over the course of his stay, which also affected his physical body.

R is for Evil Dead Rise (2023)

Last night I watched Evil Dead Rise. I will mention one spoiler which isn't to the overall story that I loved. I'll edit the post so that you have to highlight to see it. Otherwise, this review will be spoiler free.

Plot

While visiting her older sister Ellie and her three children, Beth finds herself fighting for her life (and the lives of her family) as something evil possessed Beth and starts wreaking havoc in her apartment complex.

Review

Let me just start by saying I loved this one. Evil Dead Rise is a worthy addition to the franchise. Lee Cronin had a vision making this and you can see that in the final product. The pacing was great. The effects and gore were top notch. There were 6,500 liters of movie blood used in the movie. From what I saw online the average human body has 5 liters. That means there are probably at least 1300 people's worth of blood in the flick.

The cast are absolute phenomenal. Lily Sullivan is a fantastic lead protagonist. She's flawed, but the best protagonists are. Alyssa Sutherland was horrifying and heartbreaking as Ellie. She's such a sympathetic character, being a quirky single mom of three equally quirky children. Once she becomes possessed, she's a truly disturbing villain. Speaking of the children, Nell Fisher, Morgan Davies, and Gabrielle Echols all put in fantastic performances.

This movie had all the trappings of an Evil Dead movie. Evil Book? Check! Shotgun and chainsaw? Check! Recording of passages from evil book? Check! Weird POV shots of mysterious demonic forces? Check! There are several homages too. While there's no SA involved, there is a nice take on the tree scene. A few of Ash's lines are said by characters. Also, unlike 2013's Evil Dead, there are some darkly comedic moments in this film. While it's not presented in the slapstick manner of Evil Dead 2, you can tell it was definitely inspired by it. There is also a line that mentions three different versions of the Naturom Demonto in existence, which implies the films of Raimi, Alvarez, and Cronin might exist in the same universe.

I won't say anything about the climax of the movie other than it was unexpected and gave us something new. Also, shout out to Staffney.

In Your Game
Unlike previous Deadites, the ones in this movie don't seem to be affected by the sun. Don't worry, this isn't a spoiler as far as the main plot goes, and was shown in the marketing and trailer. There are a few reasons for this. The first is that the possessed folks aren't traditional deadites. The second (which is my headcannon because it's more fun) is that the Faceless Man has been resurrected and is active during the time of the movie.

Ash4President

Since I statted out Obama earlier, I thought it would be fun to share the Ash4President videos STARZ released to advertise the second season of Ash vs Evil Dead. During this time there was also an unrelated Army of Darkness: Ash For President one-shot released by Dynamite Comics.
