AHPC 14: Pestigors in the Old World

Those who study forbidden tomes know that within the dark forests of the Old World brood the evil  Beastmen, but some are dedicated to specific chaos powers. Those that choose the God of Decay and Pestilence are known as Magic the Gathering players Pestigors.

Pestigors: Baptised in Pus!

Amongst my stash of figs were these models begging for attention. These are metal 6th edition figures from 2003 and it took awhile to amass enough for the units size I desired under the old rules. I suspect that under the new system, small units may be more flexible so I will instead build them as 2 x 10 figure units.

Quite happy with the overall effect of the verdigris and rust effects!

To stand out amongst my Beastmen horde of mostly green and brown figures, I departed from the usual Nurgly greens. Instead, lighter sickly shades make the festering yellow and pink pustules look even lovelier. You're welcome!

Modelling note: paint colours used were the same as my Nurgle Blood Bowl team here:

Papa Nurgle's "Dream Team" take the field!

Just a small submission from me this week; 10 figs @ 5 points = 50 points. This will take me to my target, representing 8,000 points across the 10 AHPC seasons I've participated in.

And happy Australia Day today to all my fellow Aussies!

May Hobby Wrap Up

No games this month - too busy travelling with work, but I did get some painting in between trips on some 40k projects.

First up is Bayard's Revenge, a special Emperor's Champion figure that Reilly kindly gave me for Christmas, depicting a scene from the Black Templar novel "Helsreach".  I played with this over a week and really enjoyed this project.

I tried a few NMM approaches with the sword (which were rubbish) and ended up going back to it being true to its name of "The Black Sword"...  I enjoyed lavishing attention on the armour to make it look beaten up and scarred without compromised.

And here's how I imagine the last stand of Brother Bayard is depicted in the Halls of Heroes aboard the Battlebarge Eternal Crusader (filters from the 'Snapseed' app)

I also did a Death Guard Kill team, using the lighter colours of the Weeping Legion so that the darker filth and yuck would contrast against it. I used a dark brown oil wash to darken down the bleach bone basecoat and overall it worked out well.

I wanted to go for a different look than the usual dark green. The white base gave me a chance to use all sorts of subtle colours that otherwise would have gotten lost.

I added rusty things from the bitz box to help the basing come to life
amongst the puddles of Nurgle's Rot.

Thats all for now - happy hobbying!

Beast of Nurgle

Last year I painted up a Nurgle Team for Blood Bowl that Reilly gifted to me for father's day: https://tasmancave.blogspot.com/2020/12/ahpc-xi-nurgle-blood-bowl-team.html

...thanks to my third but mercifully shorter period of quarantine for this year, I've finally gotten to painting a Beast of Nurgle (or Rotspawn, as the position is now called) for the team. I wasn't a fan of the GW model so using our new 3d resin printer we made our own. Its quite large and would probably be better printed at 90%, but this guy is super imposing on the pitch :-)

This model is "The Maw" by creator Dark Gods. Priced at only a few dollars, the pre-supported stl is really great and I highly recommend it.  It also comes with a bunch of options so you could build a whole Fantasy unit with none of them the same: https://www.myminifactory.com/object/3d-print-the-maw-dark-gods-166164

Painting wise this was a pretty quick and dirty project with lots of washes I started with a dark green base and added a white zenithal highlight. Flesh was as per my team using Celestra grey with Druchi Violet wash. Slaneshi Grey drybrush and then highlights with Ulthan Grey and Palid Wych Flesh. Mouth was a basecoated in Screamer Pink, highlighted in Emperor's Children, a patchy red wash and finally a gloss finish.

Concurrently, our DungeonBowl set has arrived and we are getting set for even greater mayhem underground. I've started churning out some thematic bases on the resin printer too.

Ahhh, that new game box smell!

AHPC XI: Nurgle Blood Bowl team

My new team: the Quarantine Breakers!!!

Presenting my new Nurgle Team! Actually the lad gave it to me for Father's Day..last year..but it just some attention for the new edition of Blood Bowl.  It was one of those WIP projects that didnt quite get finished before AHPC XI started (we were too busy playing!) so all that counts are the two 1 point balls :-)

For the Beast of Nurgle (now called a Rotspawn) I am using this guy which I already had: https://tasmancave.blogspot.com/2013/05/beast-of-nurgle.html

The only problem is that the team only comes with two of the four pestigors, which are key players as the only ones which reasonable agility for ball handling. Unfortunately, additional pestigor models aren't available for sale. The search continues...

I really like how the colour scheme, and was after something other than the usual pale green and yellow you usually associate with the Lord of Decay. I must admit to following the "Deep Sick Divers" recipe at the Tale of Painters: https://taleofpainters.com/2019/07/tutorial-nurgles-rotters-blood-bowl-team/

I did modify a few colours, namely:

- Flesh was a base of Celestra Grey, Druchii Violet wash, Ulthuan Grey highlight, and Pallid Wych Flesh ultra-highlight

- Metallics were old school GW Dwarven Bronze with an Agrax Earthshade wash and Runefang for scratches and dents.

- Pustules were either Pink Horror with Tentacle Pink highlight (yes my original 1990s era Tentacle Pink FINALLY put to use!), or Uriel Yellow, Baal Red wash and a Flash Gitz highlight

Modelling note:

The Pitch lines were done by painting the thin edge of a paddle-pop stick white and then pressing it to the turf (Reilly's idea)

With the Strength of a warm Mars bar...yet again!

This may indeed be reminiscent of an historical incident (see  http://tasmancave.blogspot.com/2009/10/with-strength-of-warm-mars-bar.html) but it has a good twist...

Reilly and I went into the local GW store recently, on the release day of the new edition of Bloody Bowl. We have played the old version a few times*. Just to take a look. You understand. The conversation went something like this:

Me: Cool, its the new Blood Bowl set. Lets check it out!

Me: Its got some good heft, must be a lot of goodies inside.

Me: Oh, it includes the full hardback new Rulebook ? (Alert: Interest level rising)

Me: And the new Black Orc and Noble Human teams too? Yes, they are very nice (Alert: Moral fortitude crumbling)

Me: Reilly hold this and feel the weight while I get the paint we need.

(and this is the best bit)

Reilly (to the GW shop assistant): We'll take this. I'll pay.

Shame minimised, happiness significant. We are now into building not one team each but two.

The first game of the new edition!

Reilly's new Underworld team taking shape

Most amusing moment thus far - Underworld star two-headed Goblin "Patches" O'Hooligan thrown for a match saving TD without any re-rolls by Troll team mate Bork Bulge-belly. The next day he tried it again, except Bork was feeling a bit Hungry and ate him. The very next next turn, Bork (fuelled by his Goblin nachos snack) casualtied one of my Nurgle Warriors!

"Patches" O'Hooligan in happier times, scoring a TD

WIP shot of my Nurgle Warriors (that were a Father's day present last year)

* about a hundred matches or so. Probably more actually.

Beast of Nurgle

I bought this great model a few months ago now, from the Carnevale range.

This one is 'The Abberation', which will double up both as a Cthulhuesque monster in Pulp gaming and also as a Beast of Nurgle in a Nurgle Blood Bowl team (which I must admit I don't own yet but its just a matter of time....).

In Strange Aeons, I intend to play this as a Blasphemous Construct lurker.

Its a wonderfully detailed model as you can see.  A little delicate maybe with all those fine tentacle ends and the tongue, but it came out just as I had hoped.
