June Hobby Round up

June saw my terrain painting focus continue, though we did play a variety of games along the way.

Really visually exciting was this great 40k Necrons v AdMech thowdown with my mate Patch and his 10 year old apprentice Commanders. This was the christening of the big urban battle terrain tiles and I was really pleased with how it all came out, with the colours in both lovely armies really popping on the light and desaturated tiles.

Also played a big game of General d'Armee at club buddy John's house, in which I commanded a wonderful looking French Division and marched it to its spectacular doom while assaulting an allied British and Spanish defensive line

Along the way Reilly did some work on our old Tyranid Army, adding a few more units to the Swarm and pitting them again a few of his University mates.

I also introduced two new gamers to our gaming group and have been playing soem games with them. Markus has a lovely Deathwatch Kill Team and we hav played 2 and 3 playr games of that recently which was fun.

This was the Necron that just wouldn't die - he soaked up 4 flesh wounds and kept repairing the damage! Reilly painted a honour mark on his after the battle

These are my Space Hulk terminators, most decades old. The Blood Angels on the left are from the original metal box release that I got in my University days

Comrade James and I unearthed our classic Terminators and threw down for a few Space Hulk missions. We tried to dial in Reilly (in Sydney COVID lockdown)  to command the Genestealers but we need to work on the tech to enable that better

I also help my mate Gavin start to base his Ancient. Now Gav never does anything by halves, so I'm talking about 500 Spartans, 500 Athenians plus some Cavalry and skirmishers. He is using 32 figure units on 2 bases, and all the figures are painted so we had to work out a way of basing that looks good, is storable, and is easily repeatable.  We potted about for a few hours and settled on this process:

This is the completed test unit on the table and looking the business, arrayed for battle. Gavin has now industrialised the process and I cant wait to see them all finished! He is now muttering about adding another few hundred Thebans to the mx...

And finally, I have been running some demo games of Blood Bowl so we can get a small League running in July. Cant wait!

First Games at the new Man Cave: Stalingrad, Kill Team and Space Hulk

Been a challenging few week on the hobby front, with the move and all.  So I decided to get on the front foot for the week leading up to CanCon and christen the new games room with some games.

First up was games night with Comrade James and some of the lads from the new club.  We tried out the "Academy of Street Fighting" supp for Bolt Action (a free pdf at the Warlords site), which takes the game down to a squad level where individuals are being activated. We played in the rubble of Stalingrad but with a few small tweaks it would be great for Arnhem with my Red Devils, or pitting US and German paras against one another in Carentan, Normandy.
As you would expect it was brutal fighting close up where SMGs and Grenades were king.  The variant rules for multi shot weapons gave great feeling of spraying bullets everywhere.

Later in the week Reilly arrived and we got some great Kill Team in - this time I took my Grey Knights and pulled off a rare (but close) win! I wont get used to that :-)  His AdMech army is really coming along and looking great!

Unpacking is not generally fun and enjoyable - but finding old treasures is, so we got a quick game of Space Hulk in using the classic Cleanse and Burn scenario. We played Coop, but clearly that wasn't sufficient for the Lad, who proceeded to flame the last room...while my Captain was still in it.  I should have seen that coming I guess!

CanCon starts today for the long weekend - always a blast. More to follow.

Addendum: The Fall of Kagul III

Dave (who posted the original pics) has told me that the following house rules were used for the extra models (to the best of his memory).  Hope this helps resurrect some old favourites to the table!

  • Hormagaunts were Stealers you could hit on a 4+, rolled two dice in combat (vice 3) and subtracted -1 from the highest.
  • Warriors you could only hit on the sustain, they had Parry and added +2 to the highest roll.
  • Carnifex was like Warrior but need two hits to kill . It also got to add the lowest die rolled to its combat score.
  • Chaplain was a Sergeant with +2 to his combat roll and a 4+ save. (But I've seen some more elegant options to this around the net)
  • Inquisitor was all that, plus a digi weapon that killed anything before it attacked on a 6.

Space Hulk: The Fall of Kagul III

Some nice footage of Space Hulk gaming at Adepticon 2015 over the weekend, with an interesting scenario for six players.  Not sure what rules were used or who manufactured the Hulk terrain.

Pics and narrative courtesy of Dave here: http://www.forum.specialist-arms.com/index.php?topic=7081.0

A huge game of Space Hulk played on a Creative Gamescape setup. Four marine players had to find an Inquisitor and get him off planet in twenty turns. Probably the closest game I ever played (see the last couple of captions) which made for a very cinematic game.
Ultramarines on the hunt for the Inquisitor
Deathwing looking for a way to open the landing bay door

The board - 4 marine and 2 stealer players
Blood Angels look for the Inquisitor on the other side of the landing bay

Hormagaunts get shot to pieces

The Chaplain was the luckiest model on the board. He waded through bug after bug and lost combat 5ish times but made his saves each time

Shoot the bugs Brothers, not the wall!
Racking up the kill count

Moving toward the second level

The Grey Knight Captain shot down an entire swarm guarding the bay door console

Almost!
This guy was fun to bring around the corner - the warrior won

The Inquisitor is found

Overwatch time!
The guy took out the warrior.  A hormagaunt finally got him
A stealer gets the first Grey Knight kill

With one turn left the Carnifex stands between the Inquisitor and his escape!
He boxcar-ed it! He and the pilot race toward the shuttle and...and 1AP short.  Bugs win!
