Blood, Sweat + Vinyl: DIY in the 21st Century

Έχουν περάσει 3 χρόνια περίπου από το καταπληκτικό "Such Hawks, Such Hounds" που εξερευνούσε γνωστές και άγνωστες πτυχές από την doom/stoner σκηνή. Αυτή η προσπάθεια φαίνεται να αφύπνησε και τους δημιουργούς του "Blood, Sweat + Vinyl", το οποίο επεκτείνεται στο ατμοσφαιρικό sludge/post-metal/post-rock παρακλάδι.

Το BSV λοιπόν, είναι μια ειλικρινή προσπάθεια καταγραφής του DIY κινήματος, επικεντρώνοντας στις 3 μεγάλες, ανεξάρτητες εταιρείες του είδους: Τη Hydra Head, τη Neurot και την Constellation.
Το DVD χωρίζεται σε 2 μέρη, από 90 λεπτά περίπου το καθένα με το πρώτο να είναι το ντοκιμαντέρ και το δεύτερο να περιλαμβάνει ανέκδοτα συναυλιακά αποσπάσματα από τις μπάντες που εμφανίζονται στο ντοκιμαντέρ.

Όσον αφορά το πρώτο μέρος που είναι και το ζουμί της υπόθεσης, παρουσιάζονται συνεντεύξεις από μέλη των εκάστοτε γκρουπ, με τον περισσότερο χρόνο να παίρνουν οι Aaron Turner (Isis/Hydra Head), Steve Von Till (Neurosis/Neurot) και Efrim Manuel Menuck (Godspeed You Black Emperor/A Silver Mt. Zion/Constellation), καθώς επίσης και συνεντεύξεις από δημοσιογράφους, visual artists και πολλούς άλλους.

Μεταξύ άλλων από την οθόνη περνάνε πάνω από 20 μπάντες, όπως οι Isis, Neurosis, GY!BE, A Silver Mt. Zion, Cave In, Oxbow, Justin Broadrick (Godflesh, Jesu), Pelican, εκφράζοντας τον αμέριστο και αμοιβαίο σεβασμό και θαυμασμό που υπάρχει μεταξύ των καλλιτεχνών (αυτό είναι και το βασικό θέμα που πραγματεύεται η ταινία), παρουσιάζοντας ανεκτίμητα ιστορικά ντοκουμέντα.

Λόγω του ότι παρουσιάζονται τόσες μπάντες, αν βάλουμε την υποκειμενικότητα στην μέση, ίσως υπάρξουν κάποια σημεία βαρεμάρας, ανάλογα με το ποια μπάντα γουστάρει ο καθένας από εμάς. Εγω για παράδειγμα γούσταρα γενικά, αλλά προς το τέλος που παίρνουν αρκετό χρόνο κάποια γκρουπ όπως οι Evangelista και Do Make Say Think, ψιλοβαρέθηκα, αλλά και πάλι αυτά που λένε είναι μέσα στο πνεύμα του DIY, οπότε δεν γίνεται να περάσουν στο ντούκου.

Συμπερασματικά, πρόκειται για μια αξιολογότατη και άκρως ενδιαφέρουσα προσπάθεια που εμβαθύνει στο κίνημα του DIY και των ανεξάρτητων εταιρειών, με πολυ όμορφες μουσικές από ένα είδος που εδώ και χρόνια βρίσκεται σε ζενίθ έμπνευσης και δημοτικότητας. Μακάρι να δούμε και άλλες παρόμοιες προσπάθειες στο μέλλον.

Μετά το γαμάτο Such Hawks, Such Hounds ντοκιμαντέρ που κάθε σωστός ΑΝΤΡΑΣ επιβάλλεται να δει, παρουσιάζοντας γνωστές και άγνωστες πτυχές από την stoner 'o' doom σκηνή, έρχεται το σαφώς πιο φλώρικο αλλά εξίσου γαμηστερό και τρομερά αναμενόμενο Blood, Sweat and Vinyl που κάνει την ίδια δουλειά με το παραπάνω αλλά κινούμενο σε post (rock, metal, hardcore) μονοπάτια (Neurosis, Isis, Pelican, GY!BE και πολλοί άλλοι).

Μπορώ να σκεφτώ ήδη ένα τρολ που θα κάνει τούμπες.

ISIS has reached an end. It's hard to try to say it in any delicate way, and it is a truth that is best spoken plainly. This end isn't something that occurred over night and it hasn't been brought about by a single cataclysmic fracture in the band. Simply put, ISIS has done everything we wanted to do, said everything we wanted to say. In the interest of preserving the love we have of this band, for each other, for the music made and for all the people who have continually supported us, it is time to bring it to a close. We've seen too many bands push past the point of a dignified death and we all promised one another early on in the life of the band that we would do our best to ensure ISIS would never fall victim to that syndrome. We've had a much longer run than we ever expected we would and accomplished a great deal more than we ever imagined possible. We never set any specific goals when the band was founded other than to make the music we wanted to hear and to play (and to stay true to that ideal), so everything else that has come along the long and winding path has been an absolute gift. As with any momentous life-changing decision (which this certainly is for the 5 of us), we feel a very dynamic range of emotions about this and cannot express all of it within the space of a few sentences, and perhaps it's best to do what we've always done in and let our music speak for us. It is and has been the truest expression of who we are as a collective and in some ways who we are as individuals for the 13 years in which we've been together. The last and perhaps most important thing we might say in relation to all this is how grateful we are for the people that have supported us over the years. It is a lengthy list that would include those who put out our records, those that played on them and put them to tape, the many bands with whom we shared the stage, all of our family, friends and companions who supported us in our individual lives and thus made it possible for us to continue on in the band, and most importantly those who truly listened to our music whether in recorded form or by coming to out to our shows (or both). It is quite true that we would never have done what we have without those people, that is many of you who are reading this. Our words can never fully express what we feel, but we hope that our music and the efforts made to bring it into being can serve as a more proper expression of gratitude for this life and for everyone in it. Thank you.

In more immediate and practical terms the tour we are about to embark upon is indeed our last. We are hoping that these final live rituals can help us bring a close to the life of this band in a celebratory and reverent way, and also provide us with a chance to say goodbye to many of those that have supported us over the years. While there is a measure of sadness that comes with the passing of this band, we hope that the final days can be joyous ones during which any and all that wish to come and join us will do so. It seems fitting that the last show of the tour and of our active existence will take place in Montreal, the site of the very first ISIS show in 1997 (though that was an unintentional move when booking the show initially). After the tour we also plan to follow through with other projects set in motion some time ago - pursuing the completion of a final EP, compiling live audio and visual material for future releases, and generally doing whatever we can to make our music available for as long as there are people who wish to hear it.

Staring at the horizon....

Τι να πω τώρα....Τρείς μέρες τώρα ακούω το Red sea και αναρωτιέμαι: Πόσα ep έχεις ακούσει που σε έκταση να καλύπτουν μόνο μια πλεύρα δίσκου άλλα
να μήν τους λείπει τίποτα? θεματολογικά, μουσικά και εικαστικά?Δεν χρειάζεται να ακούσεις τίποτα παραπάνω απο την γυναικεία φωνή στην εισαγωγή του δεύτερου track για να 'νιώσεις'.
Mosquito Control: μια (ακόμα)εισαγωγή στην ενοιολογική θεματολογία που έκαναν συνηθειο οι Isis.Όχι άδικα έχουν συνδέθει σαν μπάντα με δυο εικόνες: με τα κύμματα και το κουνούπι. Θέματα με τα οποία πάντα έχουν ερωτικές σχέσεις , με ότι και να καταπιάνονται...
Λίγο πριν την προηγούμενη δεκαετία οι κυκλοφορίες αυτές.Απόλυτη χρονολογική συγκηρία . ¨Ολη η νέα δεκαετία τους βρίσκει κάτι παραπάνω απο ενεργους, και με την μουσική τους και το ύφος τους, να επηρεάζει μεγάλο αριθμό συγκροτημάτων σε μικρό χρονικό διάστημα.
Ηταν περίπου τα μέσα των 00's όπου χρησιμοποιούσαμε τον όρο 'Isis φάση' για να περιγράψουμε τι παίζει μια μπάντα. Δεν λέω πράγματα που δεν είναι γνωστά, αλλά αυτα που διαπιστώνω τις τελευταίες μέρες.Οπως και την διαπίστωση οτι η μπάντα απο το 98 ,δεν έχει βγάλει ep ,live,album,split,reinterpretation,dvd που να μην ειναι αρκετά καλό ή και ικανοποιητικό.Τα albums τους βασικά καθεαυτα είναι απο πολυ καλά εως άψογα(ίσως υπερβάλω λιγο)
Τα 10's μπήκαν και οτι και να μας κράταει ακόμα μυστικό αυτη η μπάντα, εγώ θα το δέχτω, καλό ή κακό.Ετσι κι αλλιώς κάθε φορά που κοιτάω τους δίσκους μου και σκέφτομαι πως δεν έχω τι να ακούσω, το μάτι μου θα πέφτει πάντα πάνω στο ίδιο album...
