Tracking the Ex-Phillies - Featuring Utley, Revere, Fasano, Schu and More!

One of my annual habits is to review the complete rosters of all 30 Major League teams, paying particular attention to see where former Phillies have ended up.  I'll review the 40-man rosters, the non-roster invitees and the coaches pages on each team's website.  Even though I do this every year, I don't always formalize my findings in a post, but it seemed like a good idea this year to give me an excuse to create a few custom cards.

Presented below, at least by my unofficial tally, are the former Phillies players in camp across the majors this spring.  I'm only tracking those players (or coaches/managers) who spent time with the Phillies.  So while Jesse Biddle is in camp with the Braves, he won't appear on the list below as he never played for the big club.  (And I think some of these players may have already moved on.)

Updated Roster Moves - Kelly, Blanco & Nava Find New Homes

2018 Chachi Departures #6
2018 Chachi Departures #7
2018 Chachi Departures #8
Three more members of the 2017 Phillies squad found new homes in recent weeks, and I wanted to update my offseason player tracker below before pitchers and catchers officially report to Clearwater on Wednesday.

Andres Blanco had been in the Phillies system since 2012.  A team leader in the clubhouse, Blanco played in 301 games for the Phils, appearing at every position except catcher, center field and right field.  He batted .257 and was one of the more reliable pinch-hitters over the past few seasons.  Appearing mainly in the team-issued sets, Blanco did receive Phillies baseball cards in a few Topps sets between 2015 and 2017.  Blanco signed a minor league deal with the Giants.

Ty Kelly became a quick Phillies Room favorite for his incredibly clutch hitting and for never failing to sign a pre-game autograph for my oldest son Doug.  In 69 games for the Phils, Kelly hit .193 and his Phillies cardboard legacy is limited to a card within the Topps Now set and the late season, team-issued photo card set.  Kelly is returning to the Mets as a non-roster invitee.

Finally, outfielder Daniel Nava signed a minor league deal with the Pirates.  Nava was limited to just 80 games with the Phillies last season due to lingering back issues.  His sole mainstream Phillies baseball card can be found within the 2017 Topps Heritage High Numbers set.

By my unofficial tally below, the only recent ex-Phillies still looking for new teams are Henderson Alvarez, Kevin Siegrist and Clay Buchholz.

Four Phillies Become Free Agents

2017 Topps #690
The day after the World Series, four Phillies joined the list of 149 total players becoming free agents.  None of the players - infielder Andres Blanco, pitcher Clay Buchholz, and outfielders Hyun-Soo Kim and Daniel Nava - are expected to return in 2018.

All but Blanco played just a single season with the Phillies.  Blanco, a clubhouse leader, first joined the Phillies organization in 2012 and made it up to the big club in 2014.  I tally nine unique Blanco Phillies baseball cards in my collection from the team issued photo card sets to appearances in the Topps flagship releases.  In 301 games over four seasons, Blanco hit .257 and played every position except right field, center field and catcher.

Buchholz started just two games for the Phils before a shoulder injury derailed his season.  His two starts earned him a half dozen Phillies cards, including a card in the recently released Topps Update set.

Nava made the team as a non-roster invitee out of spring training, and despite hamstring and back injuries, appeared in 80 games compiling an impressive .301 average.  His time with the Phillies is marked with baseball cards in the team issued photo card set as well as a card in the Topps Heritage High Numbers set.  Kim joined the club in late July as part of the deal that sent Jeremy Hellickson to the Orioles.  In 40 games, Kim hit .230 with 4 RBIs.  He appears in the late season team issued photo card update set, marking what is most likely his one and only Phillies baseball card appearance.

Finally, I wanted to add Pedro Beato to the list below as Beato recently became a minor league free agent.  Beato pitched 2/3 of an inning back on July 29th before blowing out his hamstring.  Beato has a card in the 2017 IronPigs' minor league team set.

Moving On - 2017-2018 Offseason
  • Henderson Alvarez - rhp (10/4/17) - Outrighted off 40-man roster and elected free agency.
  • Ty Kelly - 2b-of (10/4/17) - Outrighted off 40-man roster and elected free agency.
  • Kevin Siegrist - lhp (10/4/17) - Outrighted off 40-man roster and elected free agency.
  • Pedro Beato - rhp (10/13/17) - Elected free agency.
  • Andres Blanco - inf (11/2/17) - Elected free agency.

2017 Topps Allen & Ginter #29 Maikel Franco

Mets 7Phillies 4 (11)
Game 161 - Saturday Night, September 30th in Philadelphia
Record - 65-96, 5th place, 32 games behind the Nationals

One Sentence Summary:  Asdrubal Cabrera hit a three-run home run off Adam Morgan in the 11th, sending the Mets to a chilly 7-4 victory.

What It Means:  The two teams, both apparently with lame duck managers, will limp to the finish line with Sunday's season finale.

What Happened:  Rhys Hoskins tied the game at four in the seventh with an RBI single and came within inches of winning it with a walk-off home run in the 10th.  The wind blowing in stalled what should have been a home run and left fielder Brandon Nimmo caught the ball right in front of the wall.  Maikel Franco hit his second home run (23) in as many days.  Cabrera continues to crush the Phillies, going 4 for 6 in this game with four RBIs.  Morgan had been nearly unhittable in recent outings before Cabrera's game-winning home run.

Featured Card:  It's been a disappointing season for Franco, and with the infield logjam (Franco, Freddy Galvis, J.P. Crawford, Cesar Hernandez, Scott Kingery) some decisions will need to be made about the once promising prospect's future.

Field Report:  Barring a last minute decision to head to this afternoon's season finale matinee, this was my final game of the 2017 season.  As has become our pattern, Doug and I arrived early and Doug stationed himself at the corner of the Phillies dugout.

He received autographs from coaches Rick Kranitz, Mickey Morandini and Juan Samuel, with Sammy signing both his mini bat and a 1985 Topps card.  Samuel actually recognizes my son at this point and asked him if would be back for Sunday's game.  Henderson Alvarez was surprisingly signing before his start and he added his signature to one of Doug's baseballs.  Andres Blanco also stopped over and signed for Doug and a few dedicated fans.

After the game started, we made our way over to Bull's BBQ to get one last autograph (and picture) from Greg Luzinski.  It was cold, but we made all the way to the end of the game, watching the final pitches of the 11th inning from behind the left field foul pole.  There may have been less than a thousand fans remaining at that point and most of them seemed to be Mets fans.

I attended 18 games this season and finished with a personal record of 9-9.  I'll be working hard over the offseason to improve upon that record in 2018.

Phils Take Series; Photo Night Highlights! (Part Two)

2017 Chachi Photo Night #8
2017 Chachi Photo Night #32
Phillies 6, Brewers 3
Game 96 - Sunday Afternoon, July 22nd in Philadelphia
Record - 34-62, 5th place

One Sentence Summary:  Jerad Eickhoff pitched six solid inning and Nick Williams started the scoring with a two-run home run in the fourth as the Phillies defeated the Brewers, 6-3.

What It Means:  The Phillies have won back-to-back series for the first time since April.  The first place Astros roll into town to begin a three-game series on Monday night.

What Happened:  Along with allowing only two runs on three hits over six innings, Eickhoff also contributed two hits and scored a run.  Luis Garcia pitched a perfect ninth to record his first save of the season.  Howie Kendrick had a clutch two-run single in the fifth.

Featured Cards:  Here's the next gallery of extremely limited edition Chachi insert cards from Saturday's Photo Night.  Eickhoff and Williams highlight the post given their efforts in this win.

2017 Phillies Team Issue #4 Andres Blanco

Braves 14, Phillies 1
Game 57 - Wednesday Night, June 7th in Atlanta
Record - 21-36, 5th place, 15 1/2 games behind the Nationals

One Sentence Summary:  The May version of the Phillies returned as the Braves rolled to a 14-1 victory.

What It Means:  The modest four-game winning streak is over.

What Happened:  Jerad Eickhoff cruised through the first four innings before running into trouble in the fifth, made worse by a Maikel Franco error. Eickhoff allowed a three-run home run to Dansby Swanson and it was all downhill from there.  Relievers Adam Morgan and Luis Garcia combined to allow nine earned runs in their two innings pitched.

Featured Card:  With the Braves up 12-0 in the eighth and manager Pete Mackanin unwilling to sacrifice any additional bullpen arms, super utility-man Andres Blanco was called to the mound. Blanco allowed a two-run home run to Matt Adams before getting Tyler Flowers to pop up to end the inning.
