Phillies Continue to Shuffle Roster

2016 Chachi New Additions #6
2016 Chachi Departures #5
The Phillies Magical Mystery Rebuilding Tour continued yesterday and based on reports flying around last night, more changes are in the works.  The annual Rule 5 draft gets underway this morning at 10 a.m., with Rays outfielder Tyler Goeddel rumored to be heading to the Phillies.

As of press-time for this post*, closer Ken Giles was most likely on his way to the Astros for four players, including three pitching prospects.

The one definite addition as of last night is relief pitcher David Hernandez.  Hernandez, who returned from Tommy John surgery in 2015, has appeared in parts of six seasons with the Orioles and Diamondbacks.  He went 1-5 with a 4.28 ERA in Arizona last season over 33 2/3 innings.  Hernandez began appearing in Bowman products in 2008 and he's been baseball card-less since his 2013 appearance in the Topps set.

In other former Phillies news, outfielder Brian Bogusevic has signed with the Orix Buffaloes of the Japanese Pacific League.  Bogusevic appeared in 22 games in September for the Phillies and he appeared in both Lehigh Valley IronPigs team sets.  I haven't made an official count yet, but the 2015 Phillies team is bound to have a ton of players with no actual Phillies baseball cards.

2015 Choice Lehigh Valley IronPigs Update #4 Brian Bogusevic

Braves 7, Phillies 2
Game 138 - Monday Night, September 7th in Philadelphia
Record - 53-85, 5th Place, 23 1/2 games behind the Mets

One Sentence Summary:  The Phillies continued their slow and steady march to the end of the 2015 season with a lifeless 7-2 loss to the Braves.

What It Means:  The Braves had lost 12 in a row coming into this ballgame, and 19 of their last 20. Fortunately for them, Aaron Harang was starting this game for the Phils.

What Happened:  Ten pitches and a few minutes into this game and the Braves had a 2-0 lead courtesy of a Freddie Freeman two-run home run.  Aaron Altherr had a triple and a nice leaping catch in one of the few Phillies highlights on this Labor Day.

Featured Card:  In his first at-bat with the Phillies, Brian Bogusevic hit a pinch-hit solo home run to right center in the fifth inning.  Bogusevic had a nice season with the IronPigs, hitting .296 in 118 games with 12 home runs and 57 RBIs.  He led the team in homers and fell one RBI short of the team lead behind Tyler Henson.  This is one of Bogusevic's two baseball cards issued this year, both of which are available in the IronPigs' team sets.

2014 Topps #524 Brian Bogusevic

Phillies 5, Tigers 4
Spring Training Game 12 - Saturday Afternoon, March 14th in Lakeland
Record - 7-4-1

One Sentence Summary:  Brian Bogusevic hit two home runs for the Phillies, as the team won its fourth game in a row.

What It Means:  Bogusevic was a last minute line-up replacement for Jeff Francoeur who was scratched with a sore oblique.

What Happened:  The game was tied heading into the ninth, but Russ Canzler singled and eventually scored the winning run on a passed ball.  Paul Clemens allowed three runs on three hits in 2 1/3 innings.

Featured Card:  Bogusevic might be heading to Lehigh Valley to open the season, but if you hit two home runs in a spring training game there's a good chance you'll end up with the featured card in one of my game summary posts.  Bogusevic has appeared on baseball cards since 2011 with the Astros, Cubs and Marlins and his last major cardboard appearance came in last year's Topps set.
