1976 Philadelphia Phillies Photo Cards

Number of Cards:  30
Card Size:  3 1/4" x 5 1/2"
Description:  As was the case with all Phillies photocards issued throughout the 1970s, these cards feature a black and white photo with the players' name below.  The cards are unnumbered.  In 1976, all photos feature hatless portraits of the players, coaches or manager, which makes them somewhat easy to identify.  The backs of the cards are blank and there's no indication on the cards themselves that they're from 1976.  Some of the cards contain blue facsimile autographs, as noted on the checklist below.

How Distributed:  The cards were handed out to fans individually and supplied to the players in order to reply to fan mail or honor autograph requests.  I could be wrong, but I don't believe the cards were ever available in complete set form.

Omissions:  I had originally listed Hutton within this set's checklist, but it always struck me as odd that his photo was the sole card in the set featuring a player wearing a hat.  I believe the listing at The Trading Card Database is incorrect and either Hutton wasn't included in the set or I haven't tracked down that card yet.  The Database uses Hutton's 1975 photo card for its listing.  Investigating the 1976 Phillies Photo Album, which includes contemporaneous photos as those used for the photo card set, Hutton is sporting a beard.  Since Hutton appeared in 95 games for the Phillies in 1976 and he was on their opening day roster, there's a possibility a bearded and hatless Hutton card exists.

Other than Hutton, the set does a great job of including all players from the N.L. East Championship winning team.  The Phillies featured only 32 different players in 1976 and this set includes 25 of them, with no notable omissions, again other than Hutton.  In descending order of games played, the set omits Rick Bosetti (13 games), Fred Andrews (4 games), John Vukovich (4 games), Tim Blackwell (4 games), Bill Nahorodny (3 games) and Randy Lerch (1 game).

Variations/Rarities:  I had originally listed a Jay Johnstone variation, featuring the outfielder kneeling, but I believe that's a 1975 variation so it will be listed with that set.

1970 Topps Appreciation:  Since this is the last time the Phillies will face the Reds in 2016, I'm cramming in a quartet of cards.  Each of these players (and manager) also have Phillies connections.

Alex Johnson started his 13-year career with the Phillies, appearing in 140 games primarily in left field in 1964 and 1965.  He'd enjoy his best season in 1970, but it wasn't with the Reds.  Johnson was traded to the Angels in November 1969 and he'd have an All-Star season in California, hitting a league leading .329 with 14 home runs and 86 RBIs.

This is Sparky Anderson's rookie card as a manager, as he took over the Reds in 1970 guiding them to a National League pennant.  His actual rookie card can be found within the 1959 Topps set from when he was the starting second baseman for the Phillies.

Pat Corrales and Johnson were teammates on the 1964-1965 Phillies teams.  Both were part of a big six-player trade in October 1965 with the Cardinals.  Corrales spent parts of five seasons with the Reds beginning in 1968, his longest stint with any team.  He'd come back to the Phillies as their manager in 1982.

Bobby Tolan was the starting center fielder for the Reds between 1969 and 1973, missing the entire 1971 season due to an Achilles injury.  He joined the Phillies for the 1976 and 1977 seasons, appearing in 125 games and hitting .253.

We're entering that part of the season when it's time to tie up a few loose ends here on the blog, and set our sights on the better and brighter days that lie ahead for the Phillies.  The 2013 Chachi set uses the design of the 1973 Topps set, and I've enjoyed featuring 1973 Topps cards with some connection to each series opponent in my series preview posts.

Almost a year ago to the day, I posted a comprehensive list of cards from the 1979 Topps set that somehow had a Phillies connection.  This post will serve to do the same with the 1973 Topps set, and it will give me an excuse to show off some cards from teams the Phillies did not face during the 2013 season.

There are 112 (out of 726) cards in the 1979 Topps set with Phillies connections* and I've determined the 1973 Topps set has 107 (out of 660) cards with Phillies connections.

*My original post tallied 111 cards in the 1979 Topps set with Phillies connections, but when the team named Steve Henderson its new hitting coach last October, the number jumped up one to 112.

1973 Topps #335, #52 and #28

1973 Topps Flashback:  This is the last meeting between these two teams this year, so I'm squeezing in three cards of players with ties to both the Phillies and the Reds.  When the Phils traveled to Cincinnati, I featured three cards of key members of the 1983 Wheeze Kids.

Bobby Tolan is the only player featured here who played for both the Reds and Phillies.  Hal McRae and Denis Menke both played for the Reds, but they were coaches during their time with the Phils.  Tolan enjoyed his best season with the Reds in 1970 when he hit .316 and led the National League in stolen bases with 57.  Following four seasons with the Reds, Tolan spent two years in San Diego before signing with the Phillies as a free agent prior to the 1976 season.

In two seasons with the Phils, Tolan hit .253 with just 10 stolen bases.  His one mainstream Phillies card can be found in the 1977 Topps set.

Menke (1972-1973 with the Reds) and McRae (1968, 1970-1972 with the Reds) were teammates during the 1972 season.  Menke was nearing the end of his 13-year career, while McRae was just getting started.  McRae was traded to the Royals in November 1972 and he'd spend the next 15 seasons playing in Kansas City.

Menke was named the Phillies hitting coach in 1989 when Nick Leyva took over as manager.  He'd outlast Leyva, serving as Jim Fregosi's hitting coach through the 1996 season.  In 1997, both Menke and Fregosi were out and Terry Francona began his four-year odyssey as the Phillies manager.  Francona's named McRae his hitting coach and they were both unceremoniously dumped following the woeful 2000 campaign.
