2012 Philadelphia Phillies Photo Cards - 2nd Edition

Number of Cards:  46
Card Size:  4" x 6"
Description:  Full bleed photos are the focus of this card's minimalist design.  The player's name can be found at the bottom of each card, with his uniform number and position in one of the top corners on either side of a simple Phillies "P" logo.  The horizontal card backs feature biographical information and complete career statistics.

How Distributed:  I purchased the original 40-card second edition set at Citizens Bank Park on July 21, 2012.  I was impressed (and I'm still impressed) with the player selection and the actual thought that went into putting together a checklist for this second half set.  Here is my original post documenting the players added and subtracted from the 2012 first edition set.

Very late in the season, the Phillies released a second version of this set, adding the six cards featured in the Complete Update Checklist below and dropping the six cards for Joe Blanton, Mike Fontenot, Hunter Pence, Jason Pridie, Brian Sanches and Shane Victorino who had all left the team via trade or release.  This post discussed the discovery of these late season cards and this post documents the additions and subtractions to the set after I had acquired it in late October 2012.

Complete Standard Checklist (Unnumbered, presented here alphabetically with uniform number and position on the front of cards):

1. Antonio Bastardo (#37 - LHP)
2. Mick Billmeyer (#17 - CO)
3. Joe Blanton (#56 - RHP)
4. Jake Diekman (#63 - LHP)
5. Rich Dubee (#30 - CO)
6. Mike Fontenot (#18 - INF)
7. Freddy Galvis (#13 - INF)
8. Greg Gross (#21 - CO)
9. Roy Halladay (#34 - RHP)
10. Cole Hamels (#35 - LHP)
11. Jeremy Horst (#47 - LHP)
12. Ryan Howard (#6 - 1B)
13. Kyle Kendrick (#38 - RHP)
14. Erik Kratz (#31 - C)
15. Cliff Lee (#33 - LHP)
16. Hector Luna (#29 - INF)
17. Pete Mackanin (#5 - CO)
18. Charlie Manuel (#41 - MG)
19. John Mayberry Jr. (#15 - OF)
20. Laynce Nix (#19 - OF)
21. Jonathan Papelbon (#58 - RHP)
22. Hunter Pence (#3 - RF)
23. Sam Perlozzo (#2 - CO)
24. Juan Pierre (#10 - LF)
25. Placido Polanco (#27 - 3B)
26. Jason Pridie (#16 - OF)
27. Jimmy Rollins (#11 - SS)
28. Carlos Ruiz (#51 - C)
29. Juan Samuel (#12 - CO)
30. Brian Sanches (#48 - RHP)
31. Joe Savery (#55 - LHP)
32. Brian Schneider (#23 - C)
33. Michael Schwimer (#44 - RHP)
34. Chase Utley (#26 - 2B)
35. Raul Valdes (#46 - LHP)
36. Shane Victorino (#8 - CF)
37. Ty Wigginton (#24 - INF)
38. Vance Worley (#49 - RHP)
39. Phillie Phanatic
40. Phillies Broadcasters

Complete Update Checklist, 2nd Version:

1. Domonic Brown (#9 - OF)
2. Kevin Frandsen (#28 - INF)

3. Josh Lindblom (#43 - RHP)
4. Michael Martinez (#7 - INF)
5. B.J. Rosenberg (#53 - RHP)
6. Nate Schierholtz (#22 - OF)
One and Only Phillies Baseball Card (3):  Fontenot, Luna, Pridie
First Appearance in Phillies Team Issued Set (10):  Diekman, Frandsen, Horst, Kratz, Lindblom, Rosenberg, Sanches, Savery, Schierholtz, Valdes
Returning Players in Phillies Team Issued Set (24):  Bastardo, Blanton, Brown, Galvis, Halladay, Hamels, Howard, Kendrick, Lee, Martinez, Mayberry Jr., Nix, Papelbon, Pence, Pierre, Polanco, Rollins, Ruiz, Schneider, Schwimer, Utley, Victorino, Wigginton, Worley

It's extremely impressive (and surprising) that Pridie has a card in this set, as he appeared in just nine games with the Phillies in July.  Fontenot and Luna also receive their one and only Phillies baseball cards in this set.

Manager (1):  Manuel
Coaches (6):  Billmeyer, Dubee, Gross, Mackanin, Perlozzo, Samuel
Phillie Phanatic (1):  The Phanatic returns to the set after a one year absence.
Broadcasters (1):  After an absence in the first edition, the broadcasters get their own card in the second edition set.  Newcomer Gregg Murphy joins Tom McCarthy, Scott Franzke, Larry Andersen, Gary Matthews, Chris Wheeler and Jim Jackson.

Omissions:  Pete Orr is the only real omission here, as he appeared in 35 games and didn't make it into either the first or second release of this set.  Orr was on the opening day roster, was sent down to the minors on June 6th and returned to the club on September 4th.

Variations/Rarities:  Fellow collectors Steve and Rick have been invaluable in helping me checklist the variations and rarities from this set.  There are at least 10 versions of these photo cards available with a Phillies logo on the back, and these cards were used primarily for the players to sign at various public appearances.  The photos for these variations are the same used for the regularly issued cards.  The list below might not be complete and we learned of new variations available as late as December 2019 when Rick attended the annual Phillies holiday sale and completely bought out the team's inventory of autographed photo cards for sale.

Additionally, the Phillies used this design to feature new players and coaches who joined the team during the 2012-2013 offseason.  These cards were presumably produced for the sole purpose of public appearances during the team's various winter caravan stops, and again there's only the Phillies script logo on the backs.

Phillies Logo Back
1. Mick Billmeyer (#17 - CO)

2. Rich Dubee (#30 - CO)
3. Kevin Frandsen (#28 - INF)
4. Erik Kratz (#31 - C)
5. Charlie Manuel (#41 - MG)
6. John Mayberry, Jr. (#15 - OF)
7. Laynce Nix (#19 - OF)
8. Jonathan Papelbon (#58 - RHP)
9. Sam Perlozzo (#2 - CO)
10. Carlos Ruiz (#51 - C)

Offseason Additions
1. Mike Adams (#37 - RHP)
2. Steve Henderson (#5 - CO)

3. Wally Joyner (#21 - CO)
4. John Lannan (#27 - LHP)
5. Rod Nichols (#54 - CO)
6. Ben Revere (#2 - CF)

Interestingly enough, all these variations/rarities cards have a 2013 copyright date on the backs (see below) and they're listed here with the 2012 set only because these cards use that set's design.  Revere was acquired from the Twins on December 6, 2012 and Adams was signed as a free agent on December 20, 2012.

Resources:  14,000 PhilliesThe Trading Card Database (excludes the additional six late season cards).

This set was originally featured in a post back in January 2015, and I'm going to slowly go through some of these team issued set posts and update them with new information gleaned (if any) over the past five-plus years.

Series Preview - Phillies at Marlins: August 23rd to August 25th

2019 Chachi Fan Favorites #17
Friday 7:10, Saturday 6:10 and Sunday 1:10
Marlins Park - Miami, FL

Phillies 66-60, 4th place in the N.L. East, 9 1/2 games behind the Braves
Marlins 45-81, 5th place in the N.L. East, 30 1/2 games behind the Braves

Phillies Probables:  Vince Velasquez (5-7, 4.35), Zach Eflin (7-11, 4.57), Aaron Nola (12-3, 3.51)
Marlins Probables:  Hector Noesi (0-3, 9.39), Jordan Yamamoto (4-4, 4.31), Elieser Hernandez (2-5, 5.18)

At the Ballpark:  This is the third annual Players' Weekend and all teams will inexplicably be wearing either all white or all black monochrome uniforms, as decided by the home team for each series.  The Marlins opted to wear all white, meaning the Phillies will be wearing all black.  Players' weekend was an idea that was cool the first year, somewhat unneeded the second year and now ridiculous the third year.

On Saturday, the first 10,000 fans will receive a Billy the Marlin Belly Bobble and on Sunday the first 5,000 kids will receive a Marlins arm sleeve.

1971 Topps #728
1971 Topps Missing Links:  Technically, this doesn't meet my definition of a true Missing Links card as Wayne Redmond never played a game for the Phillies.  Signed by the Tigers as an amateur free agent prior to the 1965 season, he made his big league debut on September 7, 1965 and would appear in four games.  He wouldn't make it back to the Majors with the Tigers until 1969, appearing in five more games.  In went 0 for 7 with a walk and three strikeouts in the only action he'd see in parts of two seasons, four years apart.

On October 23, 1970, the Tigers sent Redmond to the Phillies as "part of a conditional deal," per Baseball Reference.  He'd go to spring training with the Phillies in 1971, appearing in the team photo that appeared in their 1971 Yearbook, but then on April 5th the Phillies returned him to the Tigers.  Topps most have been optimistic about his chances, as they included him on a multi-player 1971 Rookie Stars card along with Keith Lampard and Bernie Williams in their high series.  So while Redmond was never officially a Phillie, I still thought he deserved a standalone Phillies baseball card to mark his 5 1/2 months with the club.

Game 19 - 2012 Topps Heritage High Numbers #H614 Juan Pierre

Rockies 4, Phillies 3 (12)
Game 19 - Friday Night, April 19th in Denver
Record - 11-8, Tied for 1st place, 1 1/2 games ahead of the Braves and Nationals

One Sentence Summary:  Manager Gabe Kapler called it a "brutal" and "devastating loss," as Charlie Blackmon hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the 12th to lead the Rockies to a 4-3 win.

What It Means:  For a team that's supposed to be competitive, the Phillies sure have had a lot of these "worst loss" of the season moments so far this year.

What Happened:  The offense had 17 hits but went 1 for 16 with runners in scoring position, leaving 19 runners stranded.  Scott Kingery and Andrew McCutchen both exited the game with injuries.  The Phillies took the lead in the 12th when Phil Gosselin singled and Bryce Harper doubled him home.  With two outs in the bottom of the 12th, a runner on first and two strikes on Blackmon, reliever Juan Nicasio threw a cookie to Blackmon who launched the ball into center field for the win.

Featured Card:  As Matt Breen Tweeted, Bryce Harper collected his first career five-hit game, making him the first Phillies player to have five hits in a game since Juan Pierre did it in 2012.

2012 Phillies Team Issue - 2nd Edition

I updated this post here in September 2020 and this original post is now outdated.

How Distributed:  I purchased the original 40-card second edition set at Citizens Bank Park on July 21st.  I was impressed (and I'm still impressed) with the player selection and actual thought that went into putting together a checklist for this second half set.  Here is my original post documenting the players added and subtracted from the first edition set.

Very late in the season, the Phillies released a second version of this set, adding the six cards featured in the Complete Update Checklist below and dropping the cards for Joe Blanton, Mike Fontenot, Hunter Pence, Jason Pridie, Brian Sanches and Shane Victorino who had all left the team via trade or release.  This post discussed the discovery of these late season cards and this post documents the additions and subtractions to the set after I had acquired it in late October 2012.

Complete Standard Checklist (40):  The cards are unnumbered, but I've presented them below ordered by uniform number.
  • 30 - Rich Dubee CO
  • 31 - Erik Kratz
  • 33 - Cliff Lee
  • 34 - Roy Halladay
  • 35 - Cole Hamels
  • 37 - Antonio Bastardo
  • 38 - Kyle Kendrick
  • 41 - Charlie Manuel MG
  • 44 - Michael Schwimer
  • 46 - Raul Valdes
  • 47 - Jeremy Horst
  • 48 - Brian Sanches
  • 49 - Vance Worley
  • 51 - Carlos Ruiz
  • 55 - Joe Savery
  • 56 - Joe Blanton
  • 58 - Jonathan Papelbon
  • 63 - Jake Diekman
  • Phillie Phanatic
  • Phillies Broadcasters
Complete Update Checklist (6):
One and Done (3):  Fontenot, Luna, Pridie
First Appearances (10):  Diekman, Frandsen, Horst, Kratz, Lindblom, Rosenberg, Sanches, Savery, Schierholtz, Valdes
Returning Players (24):  Bastardo, Blanton, Brown, Galvis, Halladay, Hamels, Howard, Kendrick, Lee, Martinez, Mayberry Jr., Nix, Papelbon, Pence, Pierre, Polanco, Rollins, Ruiz, Schneider, Schwimer, Utley, Victorino, Wigginton, Worley

It's extremely impressive (and surprising) that Pridie has a card in this set, as he appeared in just nine games with the Phillies in July.  Fontenot and Luna also receive their one and only Phillies baseball cards in this set.

The First Appearance designation is for players who have never before appeared within a Phillies team issued set.  These players may have already appeared on other Phillies baseball cards.

Manager (1):  Manuel
Coaches (6):  Billmeyer, Dubee, Gross, Mackanin, Perlozzo, Samuel
Phillie Phanatic (1)
Broadcasters (1):  After an absence in the first edition, the broadcasters get their own card in the second edition set.  Newcomer Gregg Murphy joins Tom McCarthy, Scott Franzke, Larry Andersen, Gary Matthews, Chris Wheeler and Jim Jackson
Commemorative Cards (0)

Variations/Rarities:  Steve F. has noted the existence of blank backed cards for Billmeyer, Dubee, Frandsen, Kratz, Manuel, Nix, Papelbon and Perlozzo.  These cards have the same photos as the regularly issued cards and contain a script Phillies logo on the back.  I added a Ruiz card to my collection in December 2017 containing just the Phillies logo on the back.  (A card exists for Mayberry, Jr. as well - see December 2019 update below.)

Wally Joyner joined the coaching staff following the 2012 season, and there's a card for him available which was presumably created for Joyner to sign during that offseason's winter caravan.  (An eBay auction for this card can currently be found here.)

In December 2015, I came across eBay auctions for John Lannan and Rod Nichols autographed cards, which share the same design and background as the Joyner card.
  • 2 - Ben Revere
  • 5 - Steve Henderson CO
  • 21 - Wally Joyner CO
  • 27 - John Lannan
  • 37 - Mike Adams
  • 54 - Rod Nichols CO
Update (December 2016) - A posed card for Mike Adams is also available.
Update (August 2019) - I came across an eBay auction featuring a posed card for Steve Henderson, who joined the Phillies coaching staff before the 2013 season.
Update (December 2019) - Fellow collector Rick found a Ben Revere posed photo card and a logo-backed John Mayberry, Jr. card at the annual Phillies holiday sale.

Trivia:  The Beckett online database omits this set and the first edition set.

2012 Topps Phillies

2012 Topps #617, #117, #449 and #120
The timing of this post is fitting as my oldest son Doug recently brought home a complete 2012 Topps factory set.  The cards are currently strewn about our dining room table in various stacks as he's slowly sorting and putting the set in order.

2012 Topps #280 (Back)
I wasn't overly thrilled when this set was first released, and I had no real emotional ties to it.  But the cool thing is . . . my son will.  He loves this set.  He's learning the players and showing me the cards he finds cool and asking me questions.  This set to him is what the 1979 Topps set was to me . . . already an "old" set when I discovered it, and therefore slightly mysterious and definitely awesome.

The Set
Number of cards in the set:  There are 660 regular cards to be found in the first and second series, with card #661 of rookie Bryce Harper added as a short-print and included within the factory set.  Before researching for this post, I didn't realize there are actual four different variations of the Harper card.  The update series added 330 cards.
My very brief thoughts on the set:  I wrote about my initial thoughts on the 2012 Topps set upon opening my first packs in February 2012.  Given my son's new found love for this set means that it now also holds special meaning to me as well.

2012 Topps #658, #28, #280 and #98
2012 Phillies
Record and finish:  Cracks in the Phillies armor first started showing this season, and they'd finish at an even 81-81 and in third place in the N.L. East.  Their undoing was a miserable month of June in which they went 9-19.  The Phils would miss the playoffs for the first time since 2006, and they haven't been back since.

Key players:  Injuries cut the seasons of Ryan Howard, Chase Utley, Placido Polanco and Carlos Ruiz short and it speaks volumes that the most consistent hitter throughout the season was the veteran outfielder Juan Pierre.  The Phillies traded two-thirds of their starting outfield at the July non-waiver trade deadline, shipping Shane Victorino to the Dodgers and Hunter Pence to the Giants.  Domonic Brown and John Mayberry, Jr. assumed starting roles for the remainder of the season.  Jimmy Rollins led the team in home runs (23) and tied Ruiz for the team lead in RBIs (68).

2012 Topps #361, #392 and 2012 Topps Update #US206
On the mound, Cole Hamels was outstanding, winning 17 games and pitching to a 3.05 ERA.  Cliff Lee also turned in another fine season, owning a 3.16 ERA in 30 starts, but earning only six wins due to horrendous run support.  Roy Halladay's injuries starting taking their toll, and in his penultimate season the former ace went 11-8 with a 4.49 ERA in 25 starts.  Jonathan Papelbon joined the club in the offseason and saved 38 games.  Antonio Bastardo and Jeremy Horst were the team's other top relievers.

Key events:  Jim Thome returned to the Phillies in an offseason free agent signing, playing only four games in the field and being used mainly as a pinch-hitter and DH in American League ballparks.  He had his biggest hit of the season on June 23rd when his walk-off home run gave the Phils a 7-6 win over the Rays.  It was his 13th game-winning home run, the most in Major League history.

Thome joined Victorino, Pence and Joe Blanton in getting traded to contenders half-way through the season when the Phillies fell out of contention.  A week before the fire sale, the Phillies and Hamels reached an agreement on a six-year contract extension, which includes a vesting option for the 2019 season.  Howard hit his 300th career home run on September 22nd.

2012 Phillies in 2012 Topps
Who's in:  Phillies players appear on an impressive 17 cards in the first series and another 13 cards in the second series.  Add in the 9 Phillies cards from the update set, and that's a total of 39 cards for a complete Phillies team set.  That's the most since the 41 Phillies cards found within the 2009 offerings.  There's also a short-printed Howard variation card, which is probably the best Phillies card in the entire team set.
  • Cards of the eight starting position players - 8 cards
#117 Carlos Ruiz (c), #280 Ryan Howard (1b), #361 Chase Utley (2b), #617 Jimmy Rollins (ss), #28 Placido Polanco (3b), #658 Juan Pierre (lf), #449 Shane Victorino (cf), #120 Hunter Pence (rf)

#190 Cole Hamels, #392 Cliff Lee, #458 Kyle Kendrick, #150 Roy Halladay, #307 Vance Worley

#64 Michael Martinez, #98 Domonic Brown, #243 Justin De Fratus, #259 Michael Stutes, #287 Antonio Bastardo, #345 Jonathan Papelbon, #353 John Mayberry, Jr., #371 Jim Thome, #464 Joe Savery, #465 Michael Schwimer, #551 Joe Blanton, #634 Jose Contreras, #US82 Ty Wigginton, #US85 Jake Diekman, #US130 Laynce Nix, #US199 Nate Schierholtz, #US225 Josh Lindblom
  • Base cards of players who did not play with the Phillies in 2012 - 0 Cards
Topps did a really nice job with player selection for the Phillies, and for the first time since 2007 everyone who received a Phillies base card in 2012 actually played for the team in 2012.

2012 Topps #371, #353, 2012 Topps Update #US82 and 2012 Topps #345
  • 2011 National League Leaders cards - 3 cards
#156 Roy Halladay (Victory Leaders), #224 Ryan Howard (RBI Leaders), #297 Roy Halladay and Cliff Lee (ERA Leaders)
  • Active National League Leaders cards - 2 cards
#29 Roy Oswalt (Active Wins Leaders), #92 Roy Oswalt (Active ERA Leaders)

I kind of liked these cards when they came out, but I soured on them when it seemed as if every pack I opened had one of these cards in it.  The idea for this subset is unique, but I would have rather it been an insert set instead of taking up valuable room in the base set.
  • 2012 National League All-Star cards - 3 cards
#US91 Jonathan Papelbon, #US206 Cole Hamels, #US295 Carlos Ruiz
  • 2012 Record Breaker cards - 1 card, #US152 Jim Thome
Who's out:  As is the norm, the bench and the bullpen could have been shown more love.  Kevin Frandsen, Freddy Galvis and Erik Kratz were on the bench for most of the season, and a case could be made that relievers Chad Qualls and Horst deserved cards.

Phillies on other teams:  Thome has three cards in the first series featuring him with other teams.  He appears on two Active Leaders cards (#91 and #324) with the Indians and a Higlight/Checklist card (#97) with the Twins.  There are also cards of Schierholtz (#63 with the Giants) and Wigginton (#154 with the Rockies) in the first series.  Finally, if you want a 2012 Topps card of Mike Fontenot, who appeared in 47 games for the Phillies, he can be found within the Giants retail team set (#SF7).

2012 Topps #280b
What's he doing here:  I don't share the same venom towards Martinez as other Phillies fans, but I do find in a little strange that a utility infielder who struggled to sniff the Mendoza Line received Topps cards two years in a row.  Frandsen, a Phillies Room Favorite, got robbed.
Cards that never were candidates:  Frandsen, Galvis, Kratz, Horst and reliever Raul Valdes over Qualls.

Favorite Phillies card:  I love the short-printed Howard variation card, but since I'm not counting that as part of the regular team set, I'll go with Polanco's card featuring him at the bat rack.  The card definitely makes me think of Tony Taylor's 1970 Topps card.

Other Stuff
Variations:  After several years of quirky and interesting variations to be found in the Opening Day, Chrome or retail team sets, there were only two minor variations within the 2012 Topps family of products.  I'm not sure if this is a symptom of the Phillies becoming a mediocre team or if this was widespread for all teams.

In any event, the only variations to be found are the cards of Kendrick and Mayberry within the retail team set which feature the same photos as their flagship cards, but more tightly cropped.  Oswalt, who parted ways with the Phillies in October 2011, has a Phillies card in the Opening Day set.
Memory Lane:  I took a stab at drafting a working checklist for the set back in January 2012.  I'm still waiting to hear from Topps on this.

Opening a Pack of 2013 Phungo from @phungo2008

2013 Phungo #42, #64, #45 and #33
I probably haven't purchased a pack of baseball cards since mid-summer and I recently got the itch to head to Target and pick up something to "rip" as the kids say these days.  Fortunately for me, and my wallet, a nice package arrived from Phungo World Headquarters just in time to curtail my trip down the card aisle.

The 2013 Phungo set release is a bit late this year, but that's fine with me.  Opening a pack of Phungo cards is well worth the wait, as there's usually a good mix of original product and vintage Phillies cards in each of the packs I've received in the past.  This year's pack definitely did not disappoint.

Featured at the top of this post are four of the original Phungo cards from my pack.  (I featured the Tommy Joseph card in a previous post.)  I absolutely love the Terry Mulholland card, as the former lefty has decided to grow a fantastic mane of gray hair.  And kudos to the Phungo photographer who captured the shot of GM Ruben Amaro, Jr. as he appears to be smugly congratulating himself for a move that probably didn't pan out.  (And I appreciate that the set's designer assigned Amaro #33, which is the number he wore during his first stint with the Phillies in 1992 and 1993.)

1959 Topps #253, 1966 Topps #121, 2002 Fleer Focus Jersey Edition #59 and 2003 Fleer Patchworks #71
And then there's the non-Phungo card portion of each Phungo pack of cards.  What are the chances that my pack would contain two vintage Phillies cards that I actually need for my collection?  The Seth Morehead and Ray Herbert cards both fill team set needs.  The same can be said for the more recently released Marlon Byrd and Mike Lieberthal cards, both of which come from an era not widely represented in my collection.

So thanks again to Phungo, and I'm definitely looking forward to the sixth edition of the set to be released in 2014!

2013 Chachi Transactions #2 Juan Pierre

A week ago today, Juan Pierre officially became an ex-Phillie when he signed a one-year deal with the recently gutted Miami Marlins.  The deal makes sense for Pierre - he'll most likely lead-off and have an everyday job with the Fish.  I believe the Phillies would have brought him back, but he would have served as the team's fourth or fifth outfielder.

I had to choose an appropriate color combination for Pierre's Chachi Transaction card, as (obviously) the Marlins did not have any cards in the original 1973 Topps set.  I made an interesting discovery when I tallied the different color combinations used by Topps in the original set.  There are only 12 different combinations broken down as follows.  Note that a player's name in the original set appears only in black, blue or pink:

I can't explain why, but for some reason this type of stuff fascinates me.  How did the folks at Topps decide that the Phillies and Brewers were going to be represented by the colors pink and purple?  For the teams added post-1973, I've decided to go with the following combinations:

Can you tell I'm home for Thanksgiving, and I have a little extra time on my hands?  Isn't it glorious?

2012 Chachi #63 Stolen Base Leaders - Juan Pierre & Jimmy Rollins

This post is scheduled to publish on Tuesday morning.  I'm hoping we still have electricity by then as we're getting battered by Hurricane Sandy.  Stay safe everyone!

As expected, the Phillies exercised their option on catcher Carlos Ruiz' contract yesterday, locking him up for the 2013 season at $5 million.  It's expected that the Phils will decline their options on reliever Jose Contreras and third baseman Placido Polanco, who both missed significant time this past season due to injuries.  Ty Wigginton could also find himself without a home as the Phils could decline his option following a disappointing 2012 campaign.*

137 players became free agents immediately following the end of the craptastic 2012 World Series, with Juan Pierre and Brian Schneider both on that list of initial filings.  Pierre had a great season, and I would think the Phillies would want to bring him back to help round out the bench in 2013.  In 130 games, Pierre batted .307 and led the team with 37 stolen bases.

2012 Phillies Team
Issue 2 #23
To date, Pierre has received Phillies cards in the Allen & Ginter's set (both a base card and an insert in the What's in a Name set), the Topps Series 2 set and the two Phillies team issued postcard sets.  Per the checklist I saw for the soon to be shipped Topps Heritage High Numbers boxed set, he's the lone Phillie appearing in that set.

Schneider was limited to just 34 games in 2012 and he hit just .225.  Erik Kratz is his heir apparent to back-up Ruiz in 2013.  Despite his three seasons with the club, Schneider's sole standard size Phillies card is his relic card from the 2010 Topps 206 release.

*As soon as I had hit Publish on Monday afternoon, the announcement came that Wigginton's and Contreras' options were declined.  I'll give them a separate departure post.  Later in the evening, the Phillies announced they had also declined Polanco's option.

2012 Topps Allen & Ginter's #2 Juan Pierre

Phillies 5, Diamondbacks 4
Game 108 - Sunday Afternoon, August 5th in Philadelphia
Record - 49-59, 4th Place, 16 games behind the Nationals

One Sentence Summary:  The Phillies came back twice to tie the game and eventually won on Ryan Howard's RBI single in the bottom of the ninth, 5-4.

What It Means:  For the first time since June 27th, the Phillies aren't a last place team as they've now pulled a half game ahead of the Marlins.

What Went Right:  Chase Utley, Domonic Brown and Erik Kratz paced the offense with two hits a piece.  Utley hit his 7th home run of the year in the 5th, to tie the game up at 3-3.  The Diamondbacks retook the lead in the 6th, but the Phils came back to tie it up again in the 8th on three infield singles, two wild pitches and an error.

Pinch-hitter Juan Pierre singled to lead off the ninth and he'd come around to score on Howard's walk-off hit.

Featured Card:  Along with Carlos Ruiz' break-out year, one of the only other success stories of 2012 has to be the year put together by Pierre.  Signed as a minor league free-agent, Pierre has hustled his way to a .314 average and despite his reduced playing time, he's leading the team with 27 stolen bases. He's provided veteran leadership and at times he's appeared to be the only Phillie on the field with his heart in the game.  The assumption is that Pierre won't be back in 2013, but I've certainly enjoyed watching him play this year.
