One Sentence Summary:  The bullpen couldn't keep the Nationals from scoring in extra innings as the Phillies fell in ugly fashion, losing 10-4.

What It Means:  The loss snapped a four-game win streak.  The Phillies still have a chance at a series win if they take tonight's series finale.  Alumni Weekend with the Blue Jays coming to town is on tap next.

What Happened:  Andrew Painter allowed a first inning run, then settled in to pitch three scoreless innings before departing with hamstring tightness.  Interim manager Don Mattingly then emptied his bullpen over the next seven innings with new acquisitions Brooks Raley and Caleb Kilian faring the worst.  The duo allowed a combined seven runs on four hits and two walks in 1 1/3 innings pitched.  Kilian's outing was the worse of the two as it came in the 11th and resulted in the Nationals winning the game.

Luis Arraez hit a solo home run in the second, his first as a Phillie.  Bryson Stott connected for an RBI single in the seventh to tie the score at 3-3.  Both teams traded runs in the 10th before Kilian entered in the 11th, giving up five runs (four earned) and retiring only one of the five batters he faced.  Derek Hill had to the leave the game in the 11th after running full force into the center field wall, trying to corral what would be a two-run triple by CJ Abrams, and ultimately the winning hit.

Featured Card:  Kilian's appearance had me thinking back to Heath Hembree, one of the worst deadline day bullpen acquisitions ever.  Hembree had a decent 11-year big league career, but had a 12.54 ERA in 9 1/3 innings pitched for the Phillies in 2020.  He never appeared on a Phillies baseball card, but here's a card he shared with another short-term Phillies pitcher, Kevin Siegrist.  Here's hoping things turn around for Kilian in the coming weeks.

One of my annual habits is to review the complete rosters of all 30 Major League teams, paying particular attention to see where former Phillies have ended up.  I'll review the 40-man rosters, the non-roster invitees and the coaches pages on each team's website.  Even though I do this every year, I don't always formalize my findings in a post, but it seemed like a good idea this year to give me an excuse to create a few custom cards.

Presented below, at least by my unofficial tally, are the former Phillies players in camp across the majors this spring.  I'm only tracking those players (or coaches/managers) who spent time with the Phillies.  So while Jesse Biddle is in camp with the Braves, he won't appear on the list below as he never played for the big club.  (And I think some of these players may have already moved on.)

Baltimore: Meeting the Second Best Mascot in Baseball

One Sentence Summary:  An impressive Phillies comeback effort fell short as the Marlins won, 10-9.

What It Means:  Pedro Florimon, who had been playing well the last few weeks, had to be carted off the field in the second when he suffered a gruesome ankle injury trying to reach first base.

What Happened:  The decisive blow in this game turned out to be a three-run, pinch-hit home run from Derek Dietrich in the seventh off Ricardo Pinto.  Giancarlo Stanton (52) and Marcell Ozuna (32) had homered earlier in the game for the Marlins.  For the Phillies, Rhys Hoskins (12) and Tommy Joseph (20) homered while Nick Williams added a three-run triple in a five-run eighth inning.

Transaction:  For the second time in three days, the Phillies claimed a relief pitcher off waivers.  This time it was Kevin Siegrist claimed from the Cardinals.  Jerad Eickhoff was moved to the 60-day disabled list to clear room on the 40-man roster, ending his season.

Featured Card/Field Report:  Meanwhile in Baltimore . . .

We missed this weekend of Phillies baseball as we took the boys to Baltimore for their first trip to Camden Yards.  The Blue Jays easily handled the Orioles in a soggy 7-2 win with Kevin Pillar, Josh Donaldson and Darwin Barney all homering for the Jays.  Marcus Stroman had to leave the game in the second after getting smoked with a Mark Trumbo line drive off his right elbow.

Earlier in the day, we toured Camden Yards where the boys met up with Oriole Bird.  Doug was unsuccessful in his pre-game autograph hunt, other than an autograph from the ubiquitous Bird.

Both boys came away with baseballs!  Doug was the lucky recipient of a ball thrown from the dugout from an anonymous Oriole and a ball thrown into the stands between innings from Chris Davis. Before the game began, from our seats in Section 22, Ben was called over to the Orioles dugout by coach (and former Phillies pitcher) Roger McDowell.  McDowell rolled Ben a ball, and the kid's night was made.
