Game 52 - Wheeler Dominates Again in Shutout Win

Cleveland Guardians  0
Philadelphia Phillies  3

2026 Philadelphia Phillies
Kids Club / Club 215
Saturday Night, May 23rd
Citizens Bank Park - Philadelphia, PA
26-26, 2nd Place, 9 1/2 games behind the Braves

One Sentence Summary:  Zack Wheeler and three relievers held the Guardians to three hits in this 3-0 shutout win.

What It Means:  Weather permitting (again), the Phillies will go for a series win this afternoon.  Saturday's game was delayed for nearly two hours due to rain.

What Happened:  Wheeler improved to 4-0 with his ERA dropping to 1.67 in his latest stellar outing.  Orion Kerkering and Brad Keller were perfect in the seventh and eighth innings, and Jhoan Duran allowed a ninth inning lead-off double before retiring the side and recording his ninth save.  Bryson Stott connected for a clutch two-out, two-run single in in the fourth to get the Phillies on the board.  Adolis Garcia walked with the bases loaded in the sixth for an insurance run.

Featured Card:  Here's Wheeler's card from the team-issued Kids Club set, which I completed on Friday night with the addition of the Aaron Nola card.  It's an 18-card set, for now, and one of the employees manning the Kids Club booth told me there are no plans for additional cards.  That could change of course, and the addition of a Don Mattingly card to the set would be a welcome addition.

Game 47 - Wheeler, Stott Lead Phils Over Bucs in Series Sweep

Philadelphia Phillies  6
Pittsburgh Pirates  0

2026 Choice Reading Fightin
Phils Mystery Promo Set
Sunday Afternoon, May 17th
PNC Park - Pittsburgh, PA
24-23, 2nd Place, 8 games behind the Braves

One Sentence Summary:  Zack Wheeler threw seven scoreless innings as the Phillies shut out the Pirates for the second day in a row, sealing the series sweep.

What It Means:  The Phillies are firing on all cylinders, and they'll look to continue their winning ways with a six-game home set against the Reds and Guardians.

What Happened:  Wheeler out dueled Paul Skenes, who was chased after five-plus innings and was charged with five runs on six hits.  Wheeler improved to 3-0, and lowered his ERA to 1.99 with his dominant performance, in which he allowed four hits, walked a batter, and struck out eight.  The game was scoreless until the fifth when the Phillies scored a pair on an RBI ground out from Justin Crawford and an RBI-single from Trea Turner.  Bryce Harper homered to lead off the top of the sixth against Skenes, with Alec Bohm then singling and Brandon Marsh doubling to end Skenes' day.  Bryson Stott doubled them both home to give the Phillies a 5-0 lead.  In the eighth, Stott hit a solo home run, his fourth of the season to cap the scoring for the weekend.

Featured Card:  Here's one of the more unique Wheeler cards I've added recently, as the Reading Fightin Phils included a Wheeler card as part of a mystery promo pack when you buy their Series 1 team set.  Wheeler made two rehab starts with Reading in April.

Game 42 - Wheeler, Schwarber Take Care of Sox in Opener

Philadelphia Phillies  2
Boston Red Sox  1

2026 Topps #261
Tuesday Night, May 12th
Fenway Park - Boston, MA
20-22, Tied for 2nd Place, 9 games behind the Braves

One Sentence Summary:  Zack Wheeler solidified the team's confidence that he is in fact back, pitching 7 1/3 strong innings in this 2-1 series opening win against the Red Sox.

What It Means:  The Phillies look to continue to win series, digging themselves out of the early hole they dug themselves in April.

What Happened:  Wheeler needed just 16 pitches through the first three innings, the fewest pitches thrown by a starting pitcher through the first three innings since at least 2000.  He departed having thrown 87 pitches (57 for strikes) and allowing six singles while striking out four.  Kyle Schwarber hit a solo home run in the top of the first, his 17th home run of the season.  It was the fifth consecutive game with a home run for Schwarber, tying a club record set by six other Phillies, most recently by Odubel Herrera in 2018.  Brandon Marsh singled to lead off the second and came home on a ground-rule double by Bryson Stott to complete the Phillies' scoring for the night.

Featured Card:  Here's Wheeler base card from this year's Topps flagship set.

Game 32 - Phils Hang on to Preserve Wheeler's First Win

Philadelphia Phillies  6
Miami Marlins  5

2025 Topps Allen & Ginter #142
Friday Night, May 1st
loanDepot park - Miami, FL
13-19, 4th Place, 9 1/2 games behind the Braves

One Sentence Summary:  The Phillies held on to win their fourth in a row behind a three-run home run from Bryson Stott and Zack Wheeler's solid outing.

What It Means:  Wheeler looked great and earned his first victory of 2026.

What Happened:  The Phillies took a 2-1 lead in the fourth on an Alec Bohm RBI single followed by a Justin Crawford RBI double.  They widened the lead to 6-1 in the seventh, capped by Stott's blast to right-center field, his first home run of the season.  Jonathan Bowlan was charged with three runs in his two-thirds of an inning of work in the eighth, and Brad Keller walked through a mine field of his own making in the ninth before earning his first save of the season.  Keller allowed a run on a hit and walk and moved the tying run to second base with a wild pitch before getting Xavier Edwards to line out to center for the final out of the game.

Featured Card:  The last game summary post to feature a Wheeler card came back in mid-August, when we learned he'd miss the duration of the season with a blood clot in his right shoulder.  It looks as if he's made a full recovery, and I have a backlog of cards from last season to post, including this card from the 2025 Topps Allen & Ginter set.  He allowed a run on three hits and two walks while striking out eight in his six inning, 94-pitch outing.

Postseason Appearances:  Philadelphia Phillies 2022-24

2025 Topps Now Red Foil #278
Zack Wheeler started the season with a few rough, early starts before settling into a rhythm in late spring/early summer.  In ten starts in May and June, including one bad start against the Braves on May 29th, Wheeler was 6-2 with a 1.43 ERA and 79 strikeouts over 63 innings pitched.  He was named to the All-Star team, but opted to skip the festivities in order to rest.  Wheeler made just six starts in the second half of the season before the team revealed on August 16th he had been diagnosed with a blood clot in his right shoulder.  That ended Wheeler's season, and while he's since had surgery to remove the clot, his status for the start of the 2026 is in doubt.

Game 123 - Depressing Day for the Phils

Philadelphia Phillies  0
Washington Nationals  2

2025 Bowman #45
Saturday Afternoon, August 16th
Nationals Park - Washington, DC
70-53, 1st Place, 5 games ahead of the Mets

One Sentence Summary:  Taijuan Walker continued to turn in quality starts and the offense continued to struggle mightily in this 2-0 loss to the Nationals.

What It Means:  The Phillies will go for the series split this morning in a nationally televised game on the Roku app.

What Happened:  Walker pitched 6 2/3 innings, allowing a pair of runs on six hits.  His only mistake on the day was a pitch thrown to James Wood for a two-run double in the fifth.  The Phillies offense had plenty of chances to score, but went 0 for 7 with runners in scoring position.  Trea Turner had a three-hit day, but was left stranded each time.  Nationals' rookie starting pitcher Cade Cavalli picked up his first big league win, throwing seven shutout innings.

Featured Card / Transaction:  Immediately following the loss, Dave Dombrowski announced Zack Wheeler (rhp) was placed on the injured list with a blood clot in his right shoulder.  This is scary news, and while the main concern is rightfully on Wheeler's health and his family, it throws the rest of the Phillies season (and postseason) into question.  With the ace of the staff now out indefinitely, the rotation for now will consist of Cristopher Sanchez, Ranger Suarez, Aaron Nola, Jesus Luzardo and Taijuan Walker.  Manager Rob Thomson also mentioned Andrew Painter's name as a possibility down the stretch.

We're hoping for all the best for Wheeler.

Game 110 - Tigers Outslug Phillies in Loss

Detroit Tigers  7
Philadelphia Phillies  5

2025 Topps Living #849
Saturday Afternoon, August 2nd
Citizens Bank Park - Philadelphia, PA
62-48, 2nd Place, 1/2 game behind the Mets

One Sentence Summary:  Tarik Skubal out dueled Zack Wheeler as the Tigers took the middle game of this weekend series, 7-5.

What It Means:  The Mets won, so the two teams again flip flopped in the standings.

What Happened:  The long ball hurt Wheeler, as he gave up three home runs in his six innings, departing with his team trailing, 4-0.  Colt Keith, Kerry Carpenter and Javier Baez all connected off Wheeler, with Gleyber Torres welcoming reliever Tanner Banks with another home run in the top of the seventh.  The Phillies finally got on the board in the bottom of the seventh when J.T. Realmuto doubled home Bryce Harper, and Nick Castellanos hit a two-run home run, his 15th of the season.  Matt Strahm gave two runs right back in the top of the eighth, and a two-run home run from Harper in the bottom of the eighth wouldn't be enough to overcome the deficit.

Featured Card / Field Report:  Jenna and I attended this game, and when we attend tonight, we will have attended all three games in a series for the first time since probably pre-kids.  The Phillies honored the late Dick Allen in a pregame ceremony, and his new Hall of Fame plaque was on display at the ballpark throughout the game.  This card from the Topps Living Set arrived in the mail as we were heading out to the game.  I also took a picture of Jimmy Rollins' new Wall of Fame plaque on our way out.

Schwarbombs x 3 Win All-Star Game, Slugger Named MVP

2025 Chachi #43
2025 Chachi #44
2025 Chachi #45

American League All-Stars  7
National League All-Stars  6
10 Innings

Tuesday Night, July 15th
Truist Park - Atlanta, GA

One Sentence Summary:  Kyle Schwarber made All-Star Game history, breaking a 6-6 tie with three straight home runs in a 10th inning, home run derby as the National League defeated the American League.

What It Means:  Pretty incredible stuff.  After the debacle of the 2002 All-Star Game, in which the game confusingly ended in a tie after 11 innings, Major League Baseball decided to go to a home run derby tournament should any All-Star Game thereafter end in a tie.  To decide the winner of the 2025 contest, three batters from each side were chosen, with Schwarber launching three home runs on three pitchers off Dodgers' third base coach Dino Ebel.  Schwarber was named the game's MVP, the first Phillies All-Star Game MVP since Johnny Callison won the award in 1964.

What Happened:  The players went back to wearing their normal uniforms!  That was by far the highlight for me, as the on-field, in-game player interviews don't really do it for me.  As I'm now so very, very old, I would love to just watch the game with some commentary on each of the All-Stars.  Schwarber entered the game in the bottom of the fifth, pinch-hitting for Shohei Ohtani.  He flew out to center off Rays' pitcher Dennis Rasmussen.  He walked against former Phillie Carlos Estevez in the seventh, and lined out as the potential winning run in the bottom of the ninth against Aroldis Chapman.

Full disclosure, I watched less of this All-Star Game than any prior All-Star Game over the past 30+ years.  Part of my lack of interest was due to there only being one Phillies player in the game, but I've also definitely reached the stage of my baseball fandom where I don't know who half these guys are.

Featured Cards:  I made All-Star cards for Zack Wheeler, who opted to stay home, and Schwarber.  I also wanted to create a Season Highlight card to commemorate Schwarber's MVP honors.

2025 Chachi Draft Pick #1

Transaction:
On Sunday night, the Phillies drafted Gage Wood (rhp) as their first pick and the 26th pick overall in the 2025 MLB Draft.  Wood is from the University of Arkansas and he's the first college pitcher selected in the first round by the Phillies since they drafted Aaron Nola in 2014.  Less than a month prior, Wood threw a no-hitter in the College World Series against Murray State, striking out 19 in the process.  There's a solid chance Wood is pitching in Philadelphia at some point this season.

Game 90 - Wheeler Dazzles Again in CG Win

Cincinnati Reds  1
Philadelphia Phillies  3

2025 Topps #392
Sunday Afternoon, July 6th
Citizens Bank Park - Philadelphia, PA
53-37, 1st Place, 1/2 game ahead of the Mets

One Sentence Summary:  Zack Wheeler allowed a solo home run to Austin Hays in this one-hit, 12 strikeout, complete game win over the Reds.

What It Means:  Wheeler is white hot right now.  In his last six starts, he's 3-1 with a 0.68 ERA and 54 strikeouts over 40 innings pitched.  This win sealed the series for the Phillies, and they headed west next for a three-game set with the Giants.

What Happened:  Wheeler improved to 9-3 and needed 108 pitches for his complete game.  The Phillies tied the game in the bottom of the fifth when Brandon Marsh walked and Kyle Schwarber doubled him home.  Bryson Stott hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth to give the Phillies the lead.  Wheeler set the Reds down in order in the top of the ninth to seal the win.

Featured Card:  This is the fourth card for Wheeler in this year's Topps Now set, by far the most among all the Phillies.  We "watched" the beginning of this game along the Giudecca Canal in Venice, while enjoying an amazing dinner at Trattoria Ai Cacciatori.  If you're ever there, I can personally recommend their linguini with clams.  Il cibo è delizioso, la vista è fantastica.

Game 85 - Wheeler's Masterful Gem Downs Padres

San Diego Padres  0
Philadelphia Phillies  4

2025 Topps Now #365
Monday Night, June 30th
Citizens Bank Park - Philadelphia, PA
50-35, 1st Place, 2 games ahead of the Mets

One Sentence Summary:  Zack Wheeler, on his way to being named Pitcher of the Month for June, continued to make his case for a Cy Young Award in this 4-0 win over the Padres.

What It Means:  Wheeler was named National League Pitcher of the Month on July 3rd, and he was added to the National League All-Star roster on July 6th.  He's got a chance to be the starting pitcher in the All-Star Game in Atlanta.

What Happened:  Wheeler improved to 8-3, allowing six hits, no walks, and striking out 10 in his eight-inning outing.  Tanner Banks tossed the final scoreless inning to clinch the combined shutout.  Wheeler was 2-1 with a 0.58 ERA in June, allowing two earned runs over five starts.  He walked seven while striking out 42.  The Phillies received RBIs from Bryson Stott, Brandon Marsh and Trea Turner to give the Phillies a 3-0 lead through four innings.  Nick Castellanos added a solo home run, his 10th of the season, in the fifth.

Bryce Harper returned to the line-up after missing 21 games with a wrist injury.  He was 0 for 2 with a walk and a hit by pitch.

Featured Card:  Here's the Topps Now card issued for Wheeler's latest gem.

Transaction:  Harper (1b) was activated from the injured list and Buddy Kennedy (inf) was designated for assignment.

Game 35 - Trio of Homers Backs Wheeler's Gem in Tampa

Philadelphia Phillies  8
Tampa Bay Rays  4

2025 Topps Now Road to
Opening Day Gold #OD-187
Tuesday Night, May 6th
George M. Steinbrenner Field - Tampa, FL
20-15, 2nd Place, 2 games behind the Mets

One Sentence Summary:  Zack Wheeler cruised to his third win of the season, backed by home runs from Kyle Schwarber, Alec Bohm and Nick Castellanos.

What It Means:  The Phillies have won seven of their last nine games.

What Happened:  Wheeler likely could have pitched more than seven innings, but with a comfortable lead and following a lengthy top of the eighth, he exited the game having allowed a two-run home run to Yandy Diaz and striking out nine.  Schwarber hit a solo home run to center to lead off the second, and Bohm gave the Phillies a 3-0 lead a few batters later with his two-run home run, his first of the season.  Castellanos piled on with his three-run home run in the eighth.  The right fielder was 3 for 5 on the night with four RBIs.

Featured Card:  I ordered a Topps Now Road to Opening Day Phillies team set a few months ago, and it arrived over the weekend.  The serial-numbered parallel included in my set was this Wheeler card, a gold version numbered to 50.

Game 20 - Harper, Schwarber Homer, Wheeler Ks 13 in Win

Miami Marlins  2
Philadelphia Phillies  7

2025 Topps Now #80
Friday Night, April 18th
Citizens Bank Park - Philadelphia, PA
12-8, 2nd Place, 1 game behind the Mets

One Sentence Summary:  The Phillies got to Sandy Alcantara early with six runs in the first two innings and Zack Wheeler struck out 13 in this 7-2 win over the Marlins.

What It Means:  In what I thought would be a quick pitcher's duel turned into a Phillies' slugfest against the usually tough Alcantara.

What Happened:  Bryce Harper launched a two-run home run in the first inning, while we were still making our way from the porch bar outside Pass and Stow (see below).  In the second, Max Kepler walked, J.T. Realmuto singled, Alec Bohm singled Kepler home and Johan Rojas singled Realmuto home to give the Phillies a 4-0 lead.  A Bryson Stott sacrifice fly and a wild pitch from Alcantara gave the Phillies two more runs, and all the run support Wheeler would need.  Wheeler improved to 2-1 with seven strong innings, allowing a pair of runs on a two-run home run to Eric Wagaman in the sixth inning.

Kyle Schwarber hit a solo home run, his seventh of the season, in the seventh.

Featured Card:  I've made it an unofficial rule of the blog to only feature cards in my collection in these posts.  I technically don't have this card in hand, but I ordered it already, so I'll feature it here.  The Phillies were one of the last teams in the majors to earn a Topps Now card this season, with Wheeler's 13 K performance breaking the slump.

Field Report:  I somewhat spontaneously took advantage of a Phillies flash sale before the start of the season, buying 30 tickets to this game for myself and my co-workers to enjoy.  It was a great night for baseball, and we sat in the less windy Section 203 for the duration of the game.  I didn't expect there to be such a huge crowd for a Good Friday game against the Marlins, but the paid attendance ended up being 44,949.

Game 5 - Wheeler Wins First of 2025

Colorado Rockies  1
Philadelphia Phillies  5

2025 Topps #218
Game 5
Wednesday Night, April 2nd
Citizens Bank Park - Philadelphia, PA
4-1, 1st Place, 1 game ahead of the Marlins

One Sentence Summary:  Zack Wheeler picked up his first win of the season and Edmundo Sosa stayed hot at the plate in this 5-1 win over the Rockies.

What It Means:  The Phillies will go for a series sweep on Thursday afternoon behind Taijuan Walker, before welcoming the Dodgers to town for a weekend set.

What Happened:  Wheeler allowed a solo home run to Hunter Goodman in the seventh inning, the only blemish during his otherwise spotless performance.  He had allowed two hits prior to that, and ended his outing with 10 strikeouts.

The Phillies scored first in the fourth inning when Kyle Schwarber doubled home Alec Bohm.  With a slim 2-1 lead in the bottom of the seventh, Trea Turner singled home Sosa.  Sosa made it 5-1 Phillies with a two-run double in the eighth.  Filling in for Bryson Stott in this game, Sosa went 3 for 4 to raise his season average to a gaudy .600 (9 for 15) with four doubles.

Featured Card:  Here's Wheeler's most recent Topps flagship card from Topps Series One.

Game 1 - Phils Win in Extras After Record-Setting K Day

Philadelphia Phillies  7
Washington Nationals  3
10 Innings

2024 Topps Throwback
Thursday #112
Game 1
Thursday Afternoon, March 27th
Nationals Park - Washington, DC
1-0, Tied for 1st Place, 1 game ahead of the Braves, Mets and Nationals

One Sentence Summary:  The Phillies struck out a record 19 times on opening day, but still got away with an extra-inning, 7-3 win.

What It Means:  It was an anti-climatic opening day for me, as I was 500 miles away in Myrtle Beach getting ready to watch my son and his high school team play a scrimmage at the Cal Ripken Experience.  Both the Phillies and his team came away with wins, and I'd be lying if I said I wasn't more excited about the high school scrimmage victory than the Phillies' opening day win.

What Happened:  Nationals' starter MacKenzie Gore and four relievers combined to strike out 19 Phillies, with Gore tallying 13 of those in six innings of work, tying an opening day record.  As soon as Gore exited, the Phillies took a 2-1 lead in the seventh with solo home runs from Bryce Harper and Kyle Schwarber.  It was Harper's sixth opening day home run.  Max Kepler made it 3-1 Phillies when he scored on a wild pitch in the eighth.  Jordan Romano had a rough Phillies debut, allowing the Nationals to tie the game in the bottom of the eighth.

In the the top of the 10th, Bryson Stott stole third with two outs after starting the inning at second as the zombie runner.  Harper drew a walk, and Alec Bohm doubled them both home, giving the Phillies a 5-3 lead.  J.T. Realmuto would bring home two more runs later in the inning with a triple.  Zack Wheeler got a no decision, but struck out eight and allowed just a solo home run in his six-inning 2025 debut.

Featured Card:  Bohm had the big hit, and there were times during the offseason it seemed he'd definitely be traded.  I recently added this card to my collection, paying tribute to a 1991 Topps Magazine card.

Transaction:  Prior to the game, opening day rosters were announced and Buddy Kennedy (inf) was officially designated for assignment.  Weston Wilson (inf) and Ranger Suarez (lhp) were placed on the injured list, retroactive to March 24th.

On Wednesday, the Phillies traded Tyler Phillips (rhp) to the Miami Marlins for cash considerations.  Phillips was out of minor league options and he made his debut with the Marlins on Friday, pitching three innings of scoreless relief.  With the Phillies, he was 4-1 in eight appearances, including seven starts.  He threw one memorable shutout on July 27th against the Guardians.

2025 Topps - The First Phillie!

I didn't hesitate earlier this year when the e-mail from Topps arrived in my inbox alerting me that boxes of 2025 Topps Series One were on sale from their website.  I've missed out in the past, having to go to the secondary market (eBay) and paying an upcharge when the need to open new baseball cards inevitably overpowered me in prior Februarys.  I didn't go crazy, adding just a hobby box and a blaster to my cart, and then waiting patiently for the February 12th release date.

The box was waiting for me when I arrived home on Wednesday, but sports practices required us to wait until Thursday to open the first packs of 2025 Topps as a family.  The first Phillie, this Alec Bohm card, came quickly within the first pack I opened.

Topps has been on a roll over the past several years, and with the exception of the misfire with 2020's design, the 2025 Topps design adds to four solid set designs in the past five years.  Updating my top ten gallery below, the 2025 set takes the place of the 2015 set in the #2 spot, with 2015 leaving the list after 10 years (!).  I've used this summary in the past to describe the new Topps flagship design, but this is what a baseball card in the year 2025 should look like - crisp, great photo, modern graphics, some non-intrusive glittery effects and a little bit of silver foil with the Topps logo.  I really like that we get the team's logo and name going up the side of a card, and the curved lines along the left border are a nice modern update to the 1982 Topps design.

We were particularly impressed with how Topps found a new way to display the player's position.  The diamond in the bottom right indicates where the player would stand on the field, and it's one of those things I can't believe we've not seen on a baseball card before.  The backs are nice and clean too, as has been the case in recent years, and kudos to Topps for once again making the card number easy to find and easy to read.  My only very minor complaint is that some of the teams have player's last names in black (not white) making those harder to read.  I would have preferred Topps go with all white for every last name for each team.

Revisiting my top ten ranking below, I might move 2022 and 2019 ahead of 2023.  I still don't like the bottom three, but 2021 may eventually take over the worst design spot in my mind.

The ace of the pitching staff, Zack Wheeler had another fantastic season, finishing second in the league's Cy Young Award voting.  Wheeler earned his second All-Star Game nod, and was 16-7 with a 2.57 ERA in 32 starts and exactly 200 innings pitched.  He led the Phillies' pitching staff in wins, ERA, innings pitched and strikeouts, with 224.  He won his 100th career game on August 31st against the Braves.  Wheeler did all he could to help the Phillies advance in the postseason, pitching seven scoreless innings against the Mets in NLDS Game 1.  But the bullpen blew it in the eighth inning, ending Wheeler's season prematurely.
