Game 89 - 2021 Choice Lehigh Valley IronPigs #14 Travis Jankowski

Phillies 5
, Marlins 2 (Game 1 - 7 Innings)
Game 89 - Friday Afternoon, July 16th in Philadelphia
Record - 45-44

One Sentence Summary:  Unlikely heroes Matt Moore, Travis Jankowski and Ronald Torreyes paced the Phillies to this 5-2 win to open the season's second half.

What It Means:  The win took the Phillies above .500 for the first time since June 13th when they were 32-31.  Unfortunately, the winning record would only survive a few hours given the outcome of game two.

What Happened:  Moore worked out of trouble to throw 4 1/3 effective innings while striking out nine batters.  Archie Bradley, who picked up the win, pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings and Ranger Suarez struck out the side in the seventh to record his third save.  Torreyes, starting at third base, made several dazzling defensive plays throughout the game.

Featured Card:  Jankowski came to bat with the bases loaded in the first and blooped a softly hit double down the right field line to clear the bases.  He added an RBI single in the third on the way to a three-hit, four-RBI game.  Jankowski hasn't appeared on any Phillies baseball cards yet, but he did make it into the recently released IronPigs team set.

Transactions:  Bailey Falter (lhp) was activated from the Covid injured list and Damon Jones (lhp) was optioned back to Lehigh Valley.  Jones has been active now for a pair of games but has yet to make his major league debut.  Matt Vierling (of) was added as the 27th man for the double header.

2021 Chachi #47

Travis Jankowski grew up rooting for the Phillies, and he got his chance to actually play for the club when he was recalled on May 30th after Roman Quinn suffered an injured Achilles.  He's appeared in four Topps flagship sets to date, and he's in the recently released 2021 Lehigh Valley IronPigs team set, which I'll soon add to my collection.

Game 56 - 2019 Topps #581 Travis Jankowski

Nationals 2
, Phillies 1
Game 56 - Friday Night, June 4th in Philadelphia
Record - 26-30, 3rd Place, 4 games behind the Mets

One Sentence Summary:  The Nationals ultimately prevailed, 2-1, in this pitcher's duel between Max Scherzer and Zack Wheeler.

What It Means:  This was an otherwise enjoyable game to watch up until the final inning.

What Happened:  Scherzer went 7 2/3 innings, allowing a fourth inning RBI single to J.T. Realmuto that scored Jean Segura who had singled to lead off the inning, and then stole second.  Wheeler allowed a fourth inning RBI-double to Josh Bell that dropped in between left fielder Andrew McCutchen and shortstop Ronald Torreyes.  Juan Soto hit a long solo home run in the sixth to give the Nationals the lead, and with the score at 2-1, the game entered the ninth inning.

Featured Card:  Rhys Hoskins doubled off Nationals' reliever Daniel Hudson to start the inning and was replaced at second base by pinch-runner Travis Jankowski.  With Realmuto at the plate as the potential winning run, Jankowski wondered too far off second and was inexplicably caught stealing when the Nationals' catcher, Alex Avila, simply ran towards him and tagged him out.  It was awful to watch and it's something that simply can't happen.  Realmuto struck out on the next pitch and suddenly the Phillies had no runners on and two outs.  Brad Hand relieved Hudson and Hand got Brad Miller to fly to center to end the game.

Look, no one feels worse about this than Jankowski, and hopefully the former Phillies fan gets a chance to redeem himself at some point.

Updated (and Final?) Non-Roster Invitees and Mini-Camp Invitees

Clearwater Threshers #19

The Phillies threw us a curveball on Tuesday afternoon, finalizing their list of 12 non-roster invitees and adding 19 more players as what they're calling mini-camp invitees.  A byproduct of our pandemic era is that the club needs to limit the number of players in camp, so we get this new wrinkle for who we'll see in Clearwater beginning tomorrow.  If you're keeping score at home, there's 40 players on the big league roster, 12 non-roster invitees and 19 mini-camp invitees, for a total of 71 players suiting up.  That's the same number of players the Phillies started with in Clearwater last February.  The mini campers will train with the big club but report to the minor league clubhouse.

New additions to non-roster invitee list since my last update are outfielder Travis Jankowski along with catchers Rodolfo Duran and Jeff Mathis.  Jankowski is a six-year big league veteran and he appeared in 16 games last year with the Reds.  He's a career .238 hitter and can play all three outfield positions.  Mathis is a 16-year veteran having spent the last two seasons with the Rangers.  A back-up for much of his career, Mathis has played with the Angels (2005-2011), Blue Jays (2012), Marlins (2013-2016), Diamondbacks (2017-2018) and Rangers (2019-2020).

Notable below is that David Paulino has been seemingly demoted from the non-roster invitee list to the mini-camp invitee list.  Pitchers Enyel De Los Santos and JD Hammer, along with outfielder Odubel Herrera, all of whom haven't played with the Phillies since 2019, are also on the mini-camp invitee list.  Play ball!
